To The Great Fisherman Out There From An Amateur Fisherman:
My fishing information is only up to date to the end of the main game for some reason. The information I have been looking for is vague, even for the Rise of the Zilart Pack, and I have all of the expansion Packs. I am currently ranked 18 at fishing. I used fisherman's tunic, fishing hose, and fishing gloves when I fish, with my trusty composite rod, which does through back the occasional small fish, but at least it doesn't break. Anyway, I have caught Gaint Catfish after Giant Catfish, and I have even caught about half a dozen Gugru Tuna, way about my skill level. Not one of these catches brought my a single skill-up. I am thinking that the best way to skill-up in fishing is like in other crafting jobs, by accomplishing something within 7-10 of you current skill cap. I caught several quus the other day, just 1 point over my cap, and 2 of them raised my fishing cap. That is where I am drawing my conclusion, though I dont know how I caught such hard fish in the first place, and since I did, why I would get a little better at fishing.
Anyway, here are my 3 questions:
1) With the dozens and dozens of new fish added, the fishing guided I found listed half of them, and then most of those they didnt list the cap at all. My question is, does anybody know any fish besides the cheval salmon, quus, and the Tricolored Carp that have a fishing cap below 30 and above 18, except for forest carp?
2) I think the forst carp has a cap of 21 which would probably be great fishing for me, but I only know of them being fished in the Yhoator and Yhutunga Jungles. Know anywhere safe a Level 30RDM/15THF or 30RDM/(20)15SMN would be safe fishing it.
3) Does where fishing gear that increases your fishing skill slow the rate at which you level up fishing?

Well, oddly, I am basically the same as you: Lvl 14.0 fishing with +4 for fishing gear. I just came to East Ronfaure from Selbina to fish for Salmon with my Halcyon rod and a Sinking minnow lure (the fly lure was sold out). I cast twice, got a salmon on the first cast and a trout on the second...also got a .1 skill-up on the trout (w00t!) Guess you just were having a stretch of bad luck :(
Rods:(X denotes possible break) X Carbon Fishing Rod X Clothespole Composite Fishing Rod X Fastwater Fishing Rod X Glass Fiber Fishing Rod Lu Shang's Fishing Rod Mithran Fishing Rod X Single Hook Fishing Rod X Tarutaru Fishing Rod
The skill people are getting is based somewhat off the durability of the rod they're using.
Composite Rod is highly durable, so there's much less of a difficulty rating. Carbon Rod is a bit less durable, so while catching fish higher than your current skill level, there's more risk involved with the chance of your rod breaking. Think of it like using crystals on certain days for crafting...if you use a Water Crystal on Lightningsday there's a good chance you'll fail, but also a good chance you'll get a skillup. ^^
Now a while back I heard it went Composite Rod > Carbon Rod > Hume Rod. Because of this I decided to use the Hume Rod and just rick it a bit for skillups. I Am getting a lot of bites unless it's like 50% moon or Lightningsday and skillups isn't too bad, fairly random though. I got maybe 0.4 the 1st hour i did it but then 1.6 the 2nd hour (no zoning btw).
I have been fishing with halcyon rod and fly lure (wearing full suit of fishing gear), plenty of fish .. both cheval salmon and shining trout, but after an hour and a bit of fishing and a stack of each fish, no skill up at all. I am level 14.2ish fishing. Trying to decide where to go next cause I mainly want to skill up at this point. Discourageing!!
i just got 18 "You didn't catch anything." using a Halycon Rod and trout balls/fly lure in a ROW
it didn't matter if i switched bait i would still get the message...and it was weird cause i've been fishing out in east ron for a little less than an hour and BAM out of nowhere i can't catch anything at all now.
i don't know where this massive fish shortage came from....its 31% wanning crescent earth day 4:10
i zoned back to sandy and then come out again and i'm still recieving these messages >.<
edit: i did some info on fishing...and it turns out i'm fatigued...it explains why i can't catch anything anymore, earlier today i was pulling moats in windy (161 to be exact) so with these fish its around 180ish fish i've caught all day)
sucks i can't fish all day...but its good cause bots can't either!
ive been sitting here fishin with carbon rod and fly lure from lvl 11 got up to 13 np but now i cant get any exp from these except wen i catch shining trout probly just a quincedence but gar its making me mad haha

I've noticed that I've caught more fish with a carbon rod than a composite rod. They both catch fish, but carbon seems better. Fishing skill 9, fly lure.
Finaly got my skill to level 12!! But is this fish supposed to level me? I sat at Chevel for 4 hours and barely got .2 off of fishing these things and I got a good fat stack of the salmon and shining trout... Are you guys sure this is the one to be fishing?
The only place i think you can break your cpmp rod is on the ferry I could be wrong but im pretty sure about this. And at lvl 12 with Waning Gibbous at 64% im getting like .8 skill ups an hour with a carbon rod and a fly lure.
Using a carbon rod is better if you have more money because it allows you to get more skill ups! I believe these bad boys can take ya to around 20 b4 its time to find some new prey!

well i was using a mythrian rod and fly lure trying to catch these fish, was taking alot longer than if i used a carbon. You would think that the mythrian rod wouldnt break in the cheval river, But NO! busted on some item i guess. after making gil and buying carbon. Skill ups like mad, went from 11 to 14 in 1 or 2 hours, which is good for me

arrowwood logs i think are the only thing that will break your rod.. theres not much you can do, i think they will break any rod.. at least its very rare for you to catch one (maybe one in a thousand casts)
tried fly clure / composite for hours no, went up .04 skill and havent cought very much either. moved up and down the river, no change. anyone else have this issue? level 10 fishing, did the exam so no cap.
You are not going to land a cheval salmon or shining trout with a composite rod at level 10 fishing. I fished here, in Cheval River in E Ronfaure, with a carbon rod + fly lure. I was catching both the salmon and the trout at level 8 fishing skill. During a new moon, I was getting more than a full skill level an hour here. (I got 1.4 skill per hour personally) You can expect to get good bumps here even during a crappy moon phase. I fished here until level 21 and I only broke my carbon rod once. That's 13 fishing skill points. My friend did the samething but he went from 11 to 19 and broke two carbon rods.
Composite Rod wont break on salmon because its for Large fish. I Fish there with Carbon / fly lure and I guarantee Im getting more bites/catches/skill than I (or anyone else) would get with a Composite rod.

I just caught 3 cheval salmon in a row with my comp rod + fly lure. My skill is 10.
Comp rod is the only one that won't break here in E Ron as well.
Incidentally, the moon is 33% waning, so the conditions are less than ideal.
You WILL skill up here with your comp rod at skill 10, and quickly.
