These things seem to be ridiculously hard to catch for me, much harder than gold carp. I'm at base skill of 44, +4 from fishing gear, and I'm lucky to reel in 1 in 6. The rod jerks way to fast for me, and I end up giving the fish back too much stamina before I can get off the button. This is with Lu Shang's and insect paste. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

Either we're both missing something, or these are just hopped up on goofballs. I'm fishing at the small pond (F-11) of Yuhtunga Jungle trying to land these for GP, almost identical setup to yours (you have a couple levels on me), and these things are fighting like freaking Bluetail! They might even be worse, but I also noticed the regular Moat Carp seem to be more fiesty. Damn Sahagins are putting junk in the water!

After reaching 20, I spent some 4 cumulative hours trying to get that last level to 21 before moving on, and never saw a single skillup. Unless someone can show pics of catching a forest carp and seeing "skill level 21", I'm pretty sure that information is a bit off.
These are awesome to skillup on at ~level 9. You'll gain lots of Moat Carps in Yuhtunga and the occasional Forest Carp will give you skillups. Make sure you've passed the guild test (turn a Moat Carp in at the guild) since these will skill you up very fast.
It can be found in both Yuhtunga and Yhoator Jungles in the little underground pools and also in the pond in Yuhtunga Jungle. I catch these with a composite fishing rod and insect balls, and I think you can also use little worms.
