actually, you can use any food with a drink effect, because the drink effects don't have the food effect symbol, they usually show mp+ like refresh.

Juice or Butter?

Depending on why you craft, Doing Apple Juice or butter can make a huge differance in your crafting. I would suggest doing butter, but that's just me. I prefer butter for a few key reasons, including the fact that it stacks and is used a lot in upcoming recipes. While butter sells for near to nothing, a conservative crafter will stock-pile these for later use. While Apple Juice is much better for the field crafter, I'd much rather craft with imagery around 10 to increase success, seeing as these and butter are very hard below 15 without. All-in-all, you're not gonna touch those Apple Juices after you cap out, but those butters are gonna keep coming over and over in later recipes.

Selbina Butter:
+ Stacks and crafts 4 a synth.
+ Very useful to stock-pile.
+ Doesn't use many ingredients, which can be picked up cheap in a few key places.
-----
- Sell for jack-crap, huge loss if sold.
- Uses expensive Ice Crystals, which are hard to farm at lower levels.
- Uses multiple ingredients, which can mean multiple trips to pick items up.

Apple Juice:
+ Good for field crafters, actually have a use.
+ Sell for a profit.
+ Use much cheaper and easier to farm Water Crystals.
+ Only uses one type of ingedients.
-----
- Don't stack, and can constantly clog inventory.
- Not worth as much as later juices, which sell for much more, and more often.
- Unless you're a mage, you'll never even touch these.
- Takes 4 ingredients for synths.

Even though you will fail alot at level 11, can you make these and still get skill ups? I dont really care if I craft them succesfully, I just want skill ups.

you should be able to with paid support. I was doing Selbina Butter(20) around there and pretty good success rate too. Maybe it was just a streak of good luck, but who knows?

I made these starting at lvl10 and had probably a 90% success rate. I made sure that I only crafted on Watersday or Lightsday and always had advanced synthesis support though.

I would recommend making Bug Broth until it caps at 15, then consider making juice. Bug Broth will be easier and generally has a nicer profit rate.

Of course, if you are a mage, you might find the Apple Juice more useful

This is not stackable so it's not a very good "hardcore crafting session" item. I failed ALOT at L14 even with advanced synth support but now at L17 I was 100% successful with about 10 of them.

Unless you mule them or know someone who will buy them and hang out with you while you craft, you will find yourself ditching these for a loss. I resorted to just selling them to the guild. I switched over to selbina butter which is the same skill cap but it's stackable (and equally worthless).

I also recommend roast mushrooms in the early teens to get you to L16 to make the L20 cap stuff a little easier. They are actually in demand so they won't sit in the AH or your bazaar for ages.

Alternately, if you have a mid-level mage job, take a stack of water crystals and a few stacks of apples and solo for a while. You'll appreciate not having to sit. :)

This is what I am doing now... working up all my mage jobs while drinking the juice I craft in the field. Right now I am still working on orange juice, and am 8whm 6blm 4rdm. I am trying to keep them balanced to avoid repeat buying equipment :p

definitely not a good idea, whil i could slice sardines at level 5 (6 levels below cap), i could hardly make a single bottle till about level 15 (5 levels below cap) so don't try this till at least level 15, it's a waist before then

Hm, I don't know. Maybe I got lucky, but I'm only lv 14 cooking and I've been making bottles of this juice off and on since about lv 12. Had a few failures, but seemed like it worked pretty well. ^^

I wouldn't recommend level 9. I tried about a dozen times at level 9 with my Hume SMN/RDM and didn't get a single skill advance or successful crafting attempt.
