Does any rod/bait work for fishing that up? What approximate skill lvl is needed to fish that up? I'm interested in using GS for when I start my dark knight and warrior jobs.

Like others have said stick to a claymore, or just upgrade the chaosbringer to deathbringer once you ge tthe dark knight quest finished. The deathbringer is definatly worth the effort. You won't find a better great sword for your DRK until after lvl 10-13.

I would assume that it's like any other rusty item -- use a "sinker" lure/bait of some sort (lugworm, for instance), plus a nice heavy-duty rod used for catching large fish (mithran fish pole). However, fishing in Batallia means a willingness to deal with (solo) the monsters which you might encounter wandering near your fishing spot, as well as the ability to kill (solo) the level 38-40 kraken which you might fish up if you're unlucky.

Mithran can break trying to pull it up, the only two rods you should try with are composite or lu shang's.
Its good to start early!

you would be best to just pass up the rusty greatsword, its hard to find and really expensive at the AH. Id stick with cheaper weapons until level 10 then use a claymore if you wanna use greatswords.

I managed to score one at the Bastok AH in the Titan server. Last time I looked, there were like 6 still in there unsold.

You get them(as well as other "rusty" items) from the gullets of fish. I'm not a fisher, but I assume you talk to somebody in your guild to gut fish you catch.

yeah i haven't been able to find one either, and on the Quezicotle world in Sandoria i've seen them go for 7000 gil in auction. but no luck in finding one. and i always do my shopping at AH, much cheaper then shop...though that's argueble

Just as a heads up, I'm researching on where to find one and have had no luck either. I did see one on the AH which sold for 10,000 gil.
so if your looking for one, be careful. They are spendy.

Not one has ever showed at the Wind Auction house on Pandemonium so maybe no one ever got one...

Ok see I'm starting as a tarutaru warrior and also starting in windie, and windie doesn't have a good veriety of melee weapons, and I don't want to get good with short sword I want to go Great sword(and you start out with onion short sword), thus I need a great sword from the get go. Will the store have it? Or the auction house?

I do beleive the rusty greatsword can be fished up in Korroloka. I was watching the fish bots there to see what they caught. Coral, Rusty Pickaxes, and other rusty weapons and armor.
