Synthing rods from broken using light crystals gives skill ups until skill 25. After that, I've synthed a dozen and received nothing (but the fixed rod).
I fix these rods with very low failure rate: lv 20 alch + adv imaging, on any day except dark. Isn't a bad way to get your skill up cheap: fish until it breaks, sell the carp, buy light crystals, fix, rinse repeat ;-)
Crafting it from glass fibers seems to be a bit more difficult. I'm at 66% (4 for 6) success with 21 alch and adv imaging.
On my server (Asura) both these recipes make a small amount of money, accounting for all costs, with 100% success rate. With any sort of failure rate, it's probably a loss, but well worth it for the skill-ups as hardly anything else at lv 20-25 seems fiscally sound.
