My reason is this, i am currently trying to skill from 26-31 Mithran Rod Frog Lure La Thiene etc...
The Bite rate is awful (was i just using the wrong ponds??) but when the fish did bite, i had so little time to reel them in, compared to the other rods i've used, this just seems to say "You don't know how much longer you can keep this on the line" almost a few seconds after i cast, i can't catch anything with it.
I originally tried using this to catch Nebimonites, and had the same, but figured as it's a rod for big fish and i was catching small fish, that this was my mistake. Now trying for bigger fishies, i find that this rod just absolutely bites hard and badly.

You can buy these at the Fishing Guild in Port Windurst (for about 25k when I bought mine on Shiva). Shop's open from 3:00-18:00, closed for holiday on Lightningday.
Yeah, I also need to break this rod for the Opo-opo crown quest. can't seem to do so... Let me know if you have any info about breaking it, and I'll post if I find anything.

Hmmm... The new patch was just released, and it seems that this is now the best wooden fishing rod designed to catch large fish. Before the patch, it wasn't worth fishing with much else besides Composite, Mithran, or Lu Shang's.
With the new patch, I wonder if it be more advantageous to use a rod like the Carbon Fishing Rod or Tarutaru Fishing Rod that isn't designed to catch large fish (such as Composite) while targetting small fish such as Moat Carp?
it's definitely better to use the smaller rods if you are targeting smaller fish. when you catch a small fish with a big rod, you will lose your catch because the fish is too small for the rod.
for anyone who's not familiar with matching up the fish to the rod, check out the fishing database at http://www.clanwind.com/ffxi/fishing/ . look up the fishies that you are trying to catch, and see whether they count as large or small.
when selecting which rod to use, read the rod's item description. if it says "designed for catching big fish," then don't use it if you're mainly trying to get the small ones. (sometimes i use a large rod anyway if a particular zone is breaking my small rods too often.)
p.s. in my opinion the best rod for moat carp is the carbon fiber rod.

I have level 47 fishing, and have used both the Composite and Mithran rods (although not the Lu Shang's, which I really wish I had). What I have found is that, as people have said before, The Composite Rod is more durable, but there are some subtle differences when it comes to fishing. The Composite Rod seems to have a higher hook rate, i.e. more fish seem to bite the line. However, the Mithran rod tend to be ever so slightly easier to actually reel in fish with, i.e. less lost catches. Over the course of hundreds of stacks of fish, I have found this to be true, although the difference is not much. However, a much bigger difference is that, while using the Mithran rod, the fish is "too small" much less. Much less. Overall, if you're aiming for mainly small fish, the Mithran will do just as well as, if not better than, a small fishing rod such as the Tarutaru rod. For large fish or a combination of small and large, the Composite rod is the way to go.
Under some views, mithran is the best rod out there. Some may argue that composite's is, but it merely breaks less, while mithran in general has a higher catch rate. Lu shang's, is, obviously the best, but is not included since it is acquired by the 10k moat carp.
On Phoniex Server it sell for more broken than it does non-broken. I really like this rod i have not had trouble with it and it is a good rod to start out with if you have the money. And you dont have to worry about money saved for buying a new one when your current one breaks b/c you make money by getting a new one. Really a Sweet Deal
Funny how it's described as the best large fishing rod considering that Mithran breaks if you catch lumber while Composite doesn't.
I guess wether it's best or not depends on what you're going to use it for.
If you're talking about strength Composite is the best. Any other way of comparing rods (like catch rate) requires so much statistics that I'm a bit lazy to do it, but maybe someone else has.
Not to mention the Lu Shang's rod... That's a pretty good rod for big fish too I hear ;)
wat is the best fish to catch and wat rod and/or lure/bair wil i need to catch him and whom do i sell it to make the best amount of profit? a NPC or at AH if a NPC which one? and were may i find him? and which rod is the best rod that will rarely break and best lure? overall. this is important to me
lol the listing actually says eveything you wanted to know and i asked one of the questions! lol it's lvl 83 X.X i am not going to be able to repair anything for a long time

So I'm on the boat on my way to Selbina, when all of a sudden (just before the boat leaves) 3 40+ redmages step on the boat. Cool I thought as I can look as some awesome stuff and drool. So then this one mage sits down and ends up CRAFTING these rods! whoa! Too bad I don't speak jap because maybe they would release their secret. Maybe someone can do some research on that one. I would assume that it is a carpentry skill.

I havent tried this yet but if that takes too long I suggest the ferry, seems most my rods get broken there (although I use fast-water rods mainly)
