Lu Shang's Rod Logistics
# Feb 11 2010 at 9:11 AM Rating: Good
One fatefull day, I decided that I would try to get Lu Shang's. Well I was bored at work yesterday so I developed this plan and thought it was pretty interesting info.

I looked at 3 different scenarios. (Note: the prices used are specific to Sylph.)

1) Starting with 0 dollars, and trading in moat carp for the quest.

FYI to do this you dont only have to catch 10,000 MC. You have to catch the MC to pay for your bait as well. After solving a system of equations I ended up with something that looked like this

Total Gil = (10000*(4/3)*40) + (F*(4/3)*40) - (F *(331.333)) - (10000*10)

The first term gives the cost of bait for the 10000 fish you need for the quest. The 4/3 is is my "bait/fish" ratio. In other words I catch on average 3 MC for every 4 insect pastes. The 40 is the cost of insect pastes at the vendor in Kazham. The second term gives the cost of bait for the additional fish used to pay for all the bait. F = total fish - 10,000. The third term gives the profit you make for all the fish you sell. The 331 and a 1/3 is assuming that you sell them for 4K a stack at sandy with 24g tax. The last term gives the profit from trading in your 10K fish. setting Total Gil to 0 and solving for F gave 1559 fish. This means a total of 11559 fish to get the rod.

Figuring about 20 minutes per stack of MC this boils down to about 321 hours worth of fishing.

2) Next I looked at fishing MC and selling them until I had enough money to buy the rod which goes for about 3mil on Sylph.

Using the same constants and a new set of equations I ended up with this

Total Gil = (331.333*F) - ((4/3)*40*F)

Basicly, just the profit from the fish - the cost of bait for the fish. Using excel solver and solving F for a Total Gil = 3mil gave 10791 fish, which is about 64 less stacks that you would need to catch from scenario 1.

This gave me an estimated time of 300 hours of fishing MC. That will save you almost an entire day of your life!

3) The last scenario I looked at was to just buy all the MC and trade them in. (This is not an option for me since im broke, but just in case your thinking about makeing this investment.)

Remember that the rod costs 3mil even to buy at AH. Well, if you buy all the MC at 4K a stack and trade them in it will costing you an extra 233,333g just to get a neat new title (probably worth it to some).

So, if your planning on fishing to get the rod, just sell your fish on the AH and buy it. If your going to buy the rod, just buy it at the AH. I hope this will help you decide how you plan to obtain Lu Shang's.

My new plan... quit fishing and try my luck farming!

Moat Carp Fishing Bump

Just a bump on Moat Carps:

I've found the best place to get moat carps is the Knightwell pond in west ronfaure.

I've tried the pond in Yhoator, Bastok, and Windurst, and my best results have been Knightwell.

90/96 of my bites were moat carp. I used Halcyon Rod + Insect Paste. The others generally returned 75% Carp. Still good, but nothing for me beat Knightwell.

Not a huge number to test on, but it's steady and good.

Edit: The past few times fishing at knightwell pond in west ronfaure I've gotten lower returns on carp. My 90/96 was probably a moon phase. What were the returns? About 80% Carp. Closer to the 75% you'll usually get.

Anyway, all up to whoever reads this to go where they want :) If you're hunting forest carp along with moats in Yhoator ponds you can also continue to skill up your fishing (at lower levels). Carp skill routes usually mention this as a place to skill while grabbing fish for your lu shang's.

Knightwell FTW! One thing to look out for (especially at popular holes such as this one), is what can be known as "fishing dry" a body of water. Thanks to other posters and some research of my own, I started this in regards to "Spot Fatigue", but you have to read down, the first part is my /panic.

Got "Carp Diem" 5-12-09, and as of right now, I was hoping it would make catching trout easier...
amount of fame?
# Feb 21 2008 at 5:37 PM Rating: Decent
does anyone have an idea how much fame obtaining lu Shang's will get you?

like if you had 0 fame in sandy, and then torned in all 10k carp, etc. I'm trying to gague how worthwhile the quest would be in regard to fame alone.

Trading in 1 Moat Carp gives you the same amount of fame has handing in 8x12 Moat Carp. To maximize the fame gained from this quest (as well as San d'Orian) fame, simply trade 1 Moat Carp at a time.

My fishing spot
# Mar 15 2007 at 2:47 PM Rating: Decent
Well, hello... I just started fishing for carp and such to begin me quest to Lu shangs, My fishing is at 68 and I would like to recommend if you are a high level, go to Yhoater Jungle and fish at (I-9). It is underground pond/waterfall thing, and you can pull up Moat and forest carp here ONLY with insect paste. I have caught about 30 non stop with only one "You did not catch..." and no Monster bites. So if you have tele-yhoat and a high level (prefferable 66+) come out here its great. Well thats all happy fishing ^^!

Peace,
Drohk

that Kennethnoisewater at the top knows nothing I have the rod and the best place to fish is the Knigtswell pond in west Ronfaure... in Bastok Markets you catch alot of rusty stuf.... Knightwell you get moat Carp back to back... yo also catch other fish besides moats in bastol which makes u mad... the only fish in Knightswell are Moat Carps.... which makes IT the best place to fish on the game for moat carps.

Moat carp are not the only fish you catch in knightwell. Catfish are another.

Akasephiroth you are WRONG, you can catch Crayfish if you are fishing with Little worms and also… Rusty Buckets. So, it makes not the BEST place to fish after all. So maybe you're the one who knows nothing. Also get some spelling lessons.
G'day.

Yes, you catch quite a few things with worms. Solution? Don't use worms. Insect paste by the barrel. Dirt cheap, and the only thing you can get from Knightswell with Insect paste is moat carp and the rare monster.

actually, opinions may vary on that. i fish in yhoator jungle catching moat and forest carp (which can be traded in for the carp quest as well). forest carp net you a few extra bucks, not much to really make it noticable, but a carp caught for this quest is a carp caught nonetheless.

fish in the underground tunnels in the pools there, cancel anything with !!! after it, it's a monster, anything that starts with the rod stand straight and has it's satmina go down, cancel that. no need to break your rod an arrowwood logs.
to sell or not to sell
# May 12 2006 at 1:00 AM Rating: Default
ok, when fishing you get bored and your mind starts to wander (at least mine does). i decided i wanted to know some silly things other might be interested in. like how long could that crazy amount of fish take to obtain:
there is 1440 mins in a day,
it takes 17 game mins for a fast catch,
that leaves you able to get a max of 85 moat carps in one earth hour (if you caught one every single catch. 10k divided by 85 will take you roughly 118 earth hours /gasp. so is it really worth it for the pole? on pandemonium moat carp sell for 8-10k per stack giving you 80,000,000+ gil for just one person to buy enough fish. hmmm do i want a fishing rod i may never be able repair? or do i want 80,000,000+ gil. not a hard question to answer.
to sell or not to sell
# Nov 04 2007 at 1:36 PM Rating: Decent
Well i agree. i found that although moats are 3k a stack on Sylph atm, and the rod is 1mil, you can sell your 10k moats 10,000/12 = 833 Approx, So thats 833 stacks of fish. 833x3k = 2,499,000 there for and aproximate saving of 1 alot of time, 2 1milish gil! please correct me if my maths is wrong however, wouldn't it be easier to sell the fish buy the rod make the gil??

Or even better! Forget this rod and get the Ebisu one, i am still to see somebody with it after 1year playing FF o.O
RE: to sell or not to sell
# May 23 2006 at 8:18 AM Rating: Good
actually your maths are wrong...

10,000 fish needed for the quest

8-10k per STACK of moat carp, 12 fish per stack

Therefore: 834 stacks required

834 x 8-10k = 6,672,000-8,340,000 gil

so ask yourself, do you feel lucky... punk

as for the repairing just find yourself a nice woodworker to do it.

Note: Took off from game, cancelled the original Zaub, and lost inter alia my first Lu. Starting all over, and now fishing 21.9, 2350 carp turned in. Current market price for moaties on Cerberus: 3500 per stack, tending down to 3k from time to time. Fishing from the Sandy docks, and getting the occasional skillup from tri's and golds. Major advantage to bring a stack of little worms, distilled water, millioncorn and earth crystals to make 12 stacks of insect paste as needed. Only have about an hour a day to play now; getting in around 4-5 stacks a night now and buying another 5-6 stacks a day as crafted items sell on the AH. Going to head out tonight to the ferry to start on nebs for skillups and profits for a while to take a break (6k profit per neb stack these days, sell all overnight). Have noticed lots of alphabet players (names like "Ghijk") who fish moaties on the docks for 2 hours, and then are replaced by somebody else (named like "Lmnop") for two hours... gee, I wonder who they are and what they are doing??? How about gobbie wardens in the cities, only attacking level 1-10 fisherfolk with Lu'Shang rods?

1) LuShang's Rod quest in Port Sandy is repeatable, but getting a second rod is not (so you can fish for your second 10k moats and get your 10 gil each... grin).

2) Repairing broken rod is level 80 woodworking, so the absolute minimum level to be able to repair it would be WW65, using light crystal. Unlikely to have any success until you get to around to WW 72-73 though. Unless you are repairing the rod when you come into port on the ferry, you cannot lose the rod during synth for repair.

3) Probable best place to fish for moats is Lake Tepokalipuka in East Saruta. Use little worms, and moats are the only fish you will catch. If you can find it, an absolutely excellent guide by Scotthmarshall somewhere on the moat carp/LuShang threads. This is his recommendation, and I second it. Worth it to invest in a Little Worm Belt if you can find one, saves inventory slots for bait.

4) The brothers' messages about the number of fish they have is based on their own catches, your contributions and a certain bending of the truth. Only way to know your count is the gal on the dock after you speak with her a couple of times.

5) LuShang's is worth the effort IF you want to skill up fishing beyond the 50s, since it is one of two rods that can catch almost all fish without breaking (I think there are only 6 fish that can break it; Ebisu is unbreakable, but have never seen one). Btw, the fish that can break LuShangs rod: Sea Zombie; Cave Cherax; Giant Chirai; Ryugo Titan; Lik; and Gugrusaurus (last two are the final catches for the Ebisu in quest Indominable Spirit).

6) If you combine LuShang's, waders, fishing gear (and of course ultimately if you can, the Big Boy furnishing, mooching ability, etc.), you can make major gil quite easily. And the nice thing compared to other crafts is that you do not have the serious possiblity of a high-level break, costing you or your customer 3-5 million gil.

7) Cooking and wood are relatively cheap to skill up to high levels; having wood73, cooking83 is a nice combo for the serious fisherman. If you are Nin 57 (or over), you can raise that cooking 83 to an effective level of 92, and be a sushi king... even though it would cost you about the same for the Hocho as it would for the LuShang's!! All that aside, cooking 29 is a very nice level to have if you are going for the LuShang, since you can do your own insect paste (note: buy your millioncorn from regional vendor (@ 36 gil?), little worms from the guild (4 gil), water from the bars (11 gil). Assume you can get a stack of earth crystals for 800 gil. This calculates out to a cost for stack of paste of 117.6 gil. Major savings over AH prices of 500+, when you are talking about the paste needed for 10k moaties.

8) If you are a high enough level, the 90+ bonecrafters can be your steady customer for gavrail fish, armored pisces and titanictus, used in bone 100 recipes. Make a deal for some armor if you can use it...

6300 carps left
As of 100905.
Kinda losing track on why I am catching these fish.
getting nightmares about carp. TT
I had a dream that I fell in the pond in Rabao and all the carps turned into "Hume-eating" carps. /sigh
that 1k carps a week seemed pretty easy but when you have everything else going on with your life it's pretty tough.
Almost tempted to buy it, but I feel like i would be cheating so I'm sticking it out.
I was lvl 48 when I started in Rabao then got to 51 and left for windy. now Im 54.
so for all who want to fish for da 'Shang', fish in Rabao till 51 (sandfish caps @ 51) then go to windy (gold carps cap @ 56)
Tips for catching carps for da Shang:
Watch TV while fishing: I never watch TV but since i started this quest it helps the time go by.
Play other video games: I play texas hold em on my xbox to kill time also.

Good luck to all

9715 left to go.
Started Monday 091305.
Make a reasonable goal if you want to get this rod.
I make 12 stacks of paste a night and fish all them up.
Im 45 and i can pull em up quite quickly, so 12 stacks go by pretty quick.
1k stacks of carp is a decent goal for me to attain a week.
For all who are serious in this give me a /tell and I will tell you a great place to fish em up.
Good luck!

Handed in my Ten-Thousandth Moat Carp to Gallijaux on Friday and he handed me my Lu Shang!!

I bought the last 5k fish. Had my mules logged at the AH in each city. Took me about 3-4 weeks considering the lack of moats for sale.

I fished early in the game, probably could have had two Lu Shangs by now but Moats are how I made my money (and "got rich") early in the game.

Now I have the two things I was in total awe of when I saw them as an utter-and-100%-knowledgeless n00b... my pimp hat and my Lu Shang. ^^

If your going for Lu Sheng's you shouldn't sell it. It only breaks on a ferry and there is a quest where you give an npc the broken rod and she fixes it for you. It is totally worth the 10,000 carps because its the best rod in the game. You'll catch a fish every cast unlike comp rod youll see that too small message. Fishing is not "done for" in making money wise. I use a hume fishing rod and a minnow on the ferry and catch noble ladys and make a lot of gil that way. There are also shall shells and a whole bunch of other fish you can catch to make money. Moat carp isn't that great a way to make gil....there are a lot of ppl fishing them. I would suggest catching them for lu sheng's and raising your skill to eventually be able to catch giant squid. which is really good profit. my lv100 fishing friend on kujata makes 900k a day fishing giant squid W/ lu shengs because you cant catch them with any other rod. *Dont't sell the rod....its not worth it

whats the rods average break rate? what does it tend to break most on? is there a higher chance of breakage the lower your fishing skill or vice versa?

That's not how it works. You obtain one by giving 10,000 moat carp to an NPC in Port San d'Oria. If you see someone who synthesized on, it was them repairing a broken Lu Shangs.

Well, there'll be no more argument about whether or not to turn in carp or sell them at AH if you're shooting for Lu Shang's...

After the update, you only get 10 GIL for each carp you turn in ><; That's not even enough to cover the cost of bait.
Update
# Nov 24 2006 at 7:15 PM Rating: Decent
sure it is, If you have a fair bit in fishing skill (20+) you can use little worms in most places, and rarely catch crayfish.
is lu still worth geting?
# Feb 23 2005 at 5:51 PM Rating: Decent
I mean every 20 moat stacks u turn in u could have had 100k. Instead u essentially break even because of the cost of bait which is like 400-500 a stack of insect balls on my server. So ur 4 mil instead of 3.3 mil therory i dunno where u guys are geting that from cause 2 stacks of insect balls cost 1k. Also since the new update it is almost lik eu can catch the same fish with any rod if u fight it enough. So my question is should i finish lu rod quest or just turn in carps before the price falls on the craps cause its easier to catch them faster? Is Lu really worth it after update is my main question. And people who went through all the trouble in geting it dont say yes just because u already have it, and dont want to be kicking yourself. Whats an honest answer.
