My friend and i both HQ Pickaxes for a higher yield, so for us its more effective to synth stack by stack as needed holding materials to make itmore effective. i have HQed these and my friend has too and Somepage knows the HQ rates also *< http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/itemdb/3574 >* HQ 1: Pickaxe x2 HQ 2: Pickaxe x3 HQ 3: Pickaxe x4 so potentially, assuming HQ3 from all 12 synths, one could have 48 pickaxes from 3 slots of inventory VS. 36, thats an extra stack for 1 inventory slot, and 96 pickaxes from 6 slots VS 72, and thats alot bigger of a difference for the ppl who like to run out and stay mining until their pickaxes are gone GL

Run around the grotto pressing tab until you get a green printed mining point. CHeck if it is free and start mining.
Macro: Line1 /targetnpc Line2 /item "Pickaxe" <t>
This also works with "Hatchet"
Keep in mind the closest NPC must be the mining point, not a mob.
To prevent flooding your inventory with pickaxes, sell your other two stacks in your bazaar for 1k each. Noone will buy em and if they do, you have no reason to complain.
Remarks: Make sure u are 30+ here or you will get agro from EP mobs. Carry armor until 35+ where u wont get agro. If u see Ashmaker Gotblut KILL HIM he drops an item worth 2k or 40k which is pretty decent. U also might wanna farm on the orcs here, they drop scale and leather equip.
Things must be cheap on your world Ashmaker Gotblut drops a Hermits wand worth 7k in Jeuno atm and preist rode is 50k in every AH in Cerberus just a little not on the side and go mine in Gusgen if your high enough level or Pal.. mines you can get better stuff there plus if you got sne... and inv... go mine in Ifrits Caldrun if thats how its spelled you can get adamin ores there after a week a buddy of mine made 11 million gil give or take a 100k. If you little boy/girl miners want advice go to any mines where you can get ores worth 5k+ and mine till your bag is full with your mining gear and only 5k+ ores my millionar buddy did this in Ifrits Caldrun he came out with half a bag of adamin ores and something else after 2 trips he got 11mil like I said oh and the mining gear+1 gives double the mining skill boost so you mine better ores more often and it also helps to have all the 4 pieces of gear even if it doesnt say + mining it helps me and my buddy like to fool around alot our goul in Final Fantasy XI is to get the cap gil Cerberus Rocks! I wage >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Holywar<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Uhm not to be annoying but my post was on mining in Yughott... not Ifrit's. And yes it might be true that Cauldron gives better ores, but when i go mining I usually do because I need the ores for crafting. Since my hometown is san'doria Yughott in nicely close by. Though I am 70 rdm now, I still dont like going into Ifrit's just because that place gives me the heebiejeebies.
I like mining in yughott or gusgen because I like the area. Not everything is profit related.
1) O.o a stack of pickaxes for 1k? Jesus, if I saw a miner w/ that on Fairy, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Set it for 99,999,999. Better deal.
2) I know from experience that the line
/targetnpc
is entirely unnecessary for mining. The Brady Guide says to use it, but the line is utterly useless unless you haven't already targeted a Mining Point. I found this out because there's a particular spot in Zeruhn that I can only rarely run right up onto (it's normally a couple "feet" away), and there are mobs near it. The "/targetnpc" line has a tendency to target the closest NPC (go figure), so I killed the line, leaving me with simply
/item "Pickaxe" <t>
Voila! Works like a charm, and no pesky trying-to-mine-leeches effect.
To answer an earlier question, no, there is no real "leveling up" of your mining skill. Gear helps undoubtedly, and there is some skill to knowing when/where to mine, but that's in the player's head, not the characters. On the other hand, a lot of it is based on chance. Some days I'll make 20k off a stack of axes and some days I'll make 7k. Given the fact that a stack generally costs 2.5k in Bastok AH on Fairy, it's a hefty profit no matter how you see it. Forty-five minutes of mining per day can quickly make you rich.
(A note regarding gear: buy it as quickly as possible. I.e., if you can only afford gloves, buy the gloves NOW. It will improve your mining and make you more gil-efficient, so you'll be able to buy more gear more quickly. I know it hurts to part with 4k for a pair of DEF 1 gloves, but you owe it to yourself.)
DO, by the way, make another character. Name it something interesting, and put all your ores on it (use the delivery system available in most cities). Leave your computer on selling ores all night, and wake up to gil. It's a good, efficient way to make money w/o taking up your playing time farming and whatnot.
Also, if you're into it, use the crappy ores you get (tin and even copper) to up your various crafting skills. You can get 1-10 easily using these.
Now, a question:
Does anyone know whether Smithing is specifically needed to synth pickaxes, or is it simply recommended in order to make bronze ingots? I'm going RNG soon, so it's time to get my woodworking up anyway, and I'd like to start leveling it with pickaxes.
----------------------------
Back on Fairy after a year off. Leveling everything but my main until I remember WTF I'm doing.
Ursula K. LeGuin wrote:

You do not need to actually level smithing to make the pickaxes. But I would not suggest using them to start on woodworking. It gets too expensive buying all the maple lumber for them. Start woodworking by making Arrowood lumber. It's cheaper and it'll take you just as high as the Pickaxes.
I'm sure he is saying 1000 for each axe since you can't sell a stack in Bazaar, and if someone buys one for 1000 there is nothing to complain about, thats a pretty good profit.
~Intro to Mining~ A lot of people ask when they want to start mining, Will it be beneficial for me to buy the Field Gear? It is very much worth it, and if you are going to be serious about mining, it is a must-have. Like everything else, it takes a little bit of money to make make money. It will most likely cost you around 30-40k to buy a full set of field equipment and i would reccomend that you buy the workers gloves (part of the lvl 15 mining set), which will only cost about 2k.
After you have properly equipped yourself, clear out your inventory as much as possible, at this point you should only have your 4 pieces of mining gear, your linkshell, and mabey a piece of head armor and a weapon to get you by in case you get aggro.
Next, your going to need to pick up some pickaxes which are sold by various NPCs in town. They generally sell around 200 gil, more or less depending on your fame.Pick up 2 or 3 stacks of them to avoid constand trips back to town.
Bastok Mines- Boytz (H-7) Bastok Port- Numa (E-7) Upper Jeuno- Champalpieu (G-6) South San d'Oria- Ostalie (F-9) Windurst Waters- Upih Khachla (H-9)
At this point you should have 10 items in your inventory max, leaving you 20 spaces for nothin but ores. Nextly and most importantly, chosing your location. Theres alot of places to mine, but depending on your level, you should be in different places. The most important thing is not to mine in places where you're going to pick up aggro. Theres more places than these, but heres some of the popular spots.
Zeruhn Mines- Pretty much for low lvls, almost anyone over level 5 can come here and mine with no problem. Common ores here are Copper, tin, zinc, iron, and silver. The less common are silver and darksteel, which are defenately keepers, they sell decently, between 5k-10k.
Palborough Mines- Good for around level 20-30. Common ores are Copper, tin, zinc, and silver. Rare ores are Iron, mythril, platinum, and silver. The problem with palborough is that you cant get gold or darksteel ores, so theres really not much thats going to make this trip worthwile, the most expensive ore you'll get here is still less than 1k. Not the best place to mine, but its there.
Yughott Grotto- An all around great place to mine around level 35. Common ores here are Copper, tin, zinc, iron, and silver. Rare ores are iron, flint stones, and most importantly, your main money makers, Gold and Darksteel. You should keep mining here until around 40.
Gusgen Mines- This is a very confusing area, so it is a good idea to do the quest to get the map before you go and in case you get lost, its a good idea to pick up a scroll of instant warp for 750 conquest points at the gate guard.
When you get to be around 40, you can come here and mine the upper level, and around 45 you can mine the lower levels. Here, you can get copper, tin, zinc, and iron easily. The harder drops to get are Silver, Gold, Darksteel, and you can also get colored stones. You can get a different colored stone depending on the day of the week.
Firesday- Red stone Iceday- Translucent stone Windsday- Green Stone Earthsday- Yellow stone Lightningday- Purple stone Watersday- Blue stone Lightsday- White stone Darksday- Black stone
You can pretty much just mine in Gusgen as long as you want, but if you decide you want something more exciting, you could always try Ifrit's Cauldron. Load up on silent oils and Prism powders when you go and try to avoid anything that moves. Note that a whm cant just go in and sneak/invisible themself, there are bombs there that will aggro by magic. It's a pretty dangerous, but if you get an Adaman ore, it will be worth it. They sell for 80k-100k.
~Mining Strategy~ you should always buy or quest for the map of an area you are going to mine in. When you find a mining point, mark it down in your markers on the map, this will help you to memorize all of the points in the area. When you start to memorize all of the points, plan a route to travel. Try to plan it so that you pass as many mining points as possible in the shortest ammount of time. Travel around your route and pick up as much ore as possible. When you fill up your inventory, filter out things like pebbles, flint stones, or copper ores in order to make room for more expensive ores. I would just repeat this until you are out of pickaxes and have a full inventory. At this point, just return to town and put your ores up at the AH. It will also be helpful to have 1 or 2 extra characters to send items to so you can have a maximum of 21 items selling at the AH at once, this will greatly speed up the process. That's pretty much all you need to know to start mining, I hope this helped you. Good luck everyone!
NOTICE As a side note to all you miners, when you sell ores, check the price history and please dont undercut prices in order to make your items sell faster. This will just hurt you in the long run. As a result of people undercutting, i have seen the price of darksteel ore drop from 8k-5k. So everyone please...dont undercut.
Does anyone have a good map showing spawn points of the mining points, im mainly looking for Gusgen, but other places will help too. If you could post one, that would be great, thanks =D
All you get from mythril seam is that gravel. You have to mine from mining points. There is some machine that you put the gravel in to make sand for a quest, but other than that the gravel is useless.
The Mythril seam is also used in the quest Rock Rackateer. After selling the rock that Mihgo gives you, you talk to her again, then to a guy named Varun or something. After talking to him, you go to Palborough and mine the seams to get a sharpstone. Hope this might help for that question about other uses for the mythril seams.
I moseyed down to Zerhun for shoots and giggles, the first logging point I found I mined Darksteel ore. Broke my axe with the first swing. But it was worth it.
Alright, my friend asked me to make a stack of pickaxes for him. So im like hey i never thought about crafting these... (Ignorant Miner by the way). Heres what I came up with.. Stack of fire = 2000 Maple Lumber stack= 1000 Stack of Bronze Ingots= 4000
All together it costs me 7K to make a 1 stack of pickaxes. Thats ridiculous I think square made a boo boo and instead of this synth giving one I think the synth should yield 12. So dont bother crafting this.
im gona try and ask Qustions other ppl and i wana know and i know some of thos Qs were asked but its a good thing to find them all in 1 place thanx if u helped try to keep giving and helping (my area names suck and my english is worse)
1)how much and wher can i get pickaxes? 2) how many should i cary? 3)can somone just start mining? it doesnt have to be levled (ex:fishing - cooking..etc) 4)wher should i mine ? parmines? and should i look for mithryial and zinc?

I'd recommend Gusgen. To go in the deepest part of the mines. I'd recommend you be at least lv50 in order to not get aggro. I've gotten everything from Gold Ore to Copper ore there. Every now and then you can dig up a colored stone as well.
I have seen a chart that shows what items can be gained from Harvesting, Logging, and Mining, and where. Now, of course, Ican't seem to find it. anyone know wher eit is or a good place to look?
Quick question, I read in one of these posts below that monstors pop out... out of minning points? So if I use a pickaxe I have the chance of running for my little Taru life? And is one pickaxe=one use?
What is a decent macro to use for mining? I can't figure it out and I can't use the pickaxe without going through the stupid drop doen list command system.
I have found mining points, but when I try to use my pickaxe on them it always says the target is out of range. Once I detect a target...how do I tell exactly where it is?
You missed Darksteel Ore. It's really rare (I only get one every 15 hours of mining or so with full mining field gear), but it's a nice bonus as it sells for 7k at the Bastok AH on my server (phoenix). Or I hear that you can make stuff with it... =P
U can buy pickaxes in Bastok Port at Galvins Gear.(it's marked on the map) And i'm sure in the Bastok Mine District at Boytz's Knickknacks. (also marked on map) Hope this helps.
There are certain areas called "Mining Point"s that pop like monsters. They are always located on the wall, and in different areas. In order to find them you just have to either camp one of the spawn points or just wander through the mines systematically until you find one. However, since the points only lasts about 3-4 uses per spawn and other players will be mining too, there are times when it can be a pain just to find one. Generally the busier the area is, the less likely you'll find a Mining Point.
HQ 2: Pickaxe x3 HQ 3: Pickaxe x4 so potentially, assuming HQ3 from all 12 synths, one could have 48 pickaxes from 3 slots of inventory VS. 36, thats an extra stack for 1 inventory slot, and 96 pickaxes from 6 slots VS 72, and thats alot bigger of a difference for the ppl who like to run out and stay mining until their pickaxes are gone GL
