I bought Liz tails 10 gil from windy or farmed em. Sage 192 Gil from NPC in bastok when they controlled certain region, farmed water clusters from la'theane and distilled water 12 gil from npc. = 212 gil roughly , re-sell to npc 192 minium loss, Started doing this from 30-40 easy skilling. Also from 34 i made Vitriol. bought bulbs for 10 gil each or farmed and farmed water crystals , npc for profit. have fun and may the force be with you
I just got done with my first huge batch of these. I started on Iceday, New Moon (10%), facing NW, at 31.9, with advanced support.
After about three water clusters worth, it changed to Lightningsday, and I was at 34.2 already, so I decided to keep going, same stats as before.
Total for the run: 31.9 > 36.1, 58 synths, 11 botches.
I botched a few times, but I was lucky to lose only mostly the water and the tails - it didn't bother me, because water is cheap, and all my crystals and tails were farmed while camping stuff. :D
I sold them back to the guild, too. For me, they took 15 potions per day, at 146g (this may or may not change based on demand). So I recouped almost 7k of the 10k in sage (my Windy fame sucks, so they were 177 per unit.) Even with buying everything, it would've only been about 20k (at most), which if you have the patience to actually bazaar or AH the potions, is easily made back with profit. I was just impatient, and needed my inventory space badly.
All-in-all, the loss wasn't too bad. Next session I'll probably only do about 3 stacks worth of synths, to hopefully cap out - or close to it- and then move on to Vitriol. ^^ Hope this helps~

Stack of Lizard Tails 300g (Leviathan) Water Cluster 700-900g Sage 155g
I skilled up Alchemy from 32-37 making 48 of these for 12k.
They sell quick in Sandy at 500g each. I made back double my money in 2 nights.
To be safe you can make them at lvl 34 and not lose many. The people who say that you should start making them at 30 don't know what they are talking about. Stop at 37, its a waste to go all the way to 40.

great for skill ups materials are dirt cheap spent less then 20k on 7stacks of materials and that got me from 29.2 to 37.4. and selling the potions to the guild or npcs you get most of your money back. only expensice ingredent is the sage. 155 for me and i could sell the potions for 141 so it's not to bad.

I started making this potion at lvl 29 not 36. It's harder to make at this lvl but the materials needed are cheap. If you synthesis on waters day the potion is more likely to be achieved.
Same here. Since the 20's are an expensive living nightmare to make it through, the moment I hit 28 I went, got synth support, and tried my first set of ingredients (only had enough for one after the 4 stacks of bees wax:(). And low and behold, not only did I succeed, but I got .4 for my attempt:). So I went out and scrounged up as much gil as I could in an hour and had enough to buy a stacks worth. Got my synth support and started crafting away. From one stack, I got 6 potions, and I am now lvl 29 alch. Which is funny, cause my main is still only 24:).
I am so happy, I can now solo in the dunes, and if I can find a good spot to buy sage (It was late last night, so I bought it from the AH) I will simply stay in the dunes, with my 2 stacks of Potions (hehehe, they can stack... if you can craft it:). And keep 5 potions and 2 stacks of selbina milk on me. I figure killing lizards and gobs will keep a constant supply of money coming in... while getting my alch to lvl 40. Now if I can just hit lvl 25 I will be a happy camper:).
If all goes well, and I get my cooking up, I will soon be able to go to zones and kill mobs while waiting for parties... but I am not holding my breath.
>>> Lol, well, it's been a year, and well, I am now lvl 85 alchemy, and haven't made a potion in nearly 6 months:).
They do come in handy, and are very useful, but they are no Bloody bolt:P
I would recommend if you are a tank, have 2 of these and 2 high potions and maybe even a hyper potion on you, if things go south, you can just pop one of them, and let the whm heal a bit.
As for soloing, when I tried, I ended up going through these like water. Works ok if you are fighting worms, but seriously, if you have the gil, it's better to just have 4-5 Pamama or persikos au laits... Potions are just not that great... Don't get me wrong, they are not bad, just no be all end all that I expected when I started (Can you say Noob:P)
Where you had a stack of potions left over at the end because you never needed them?
Ah, those were the days.

You need to remember that you can level multiple classes. Anyone who can craft this can level their sub or lower level char much quicker. This is not a newbie item, but more of a perk for established players who want to level another class, or an advanced job.
Yes the level to make potions is a major problem in my book. By the time you get A: level to make it or B: money to buy it, there is really no point because it doesn't heal enough.
Also (and this is me adding to my post) this is what makes it impossible to party without a healer...I feel the healer has way to much responsibility in this game.
#Anonymous,

A potion heals 50 health.. as in it's an item for more noobish characters. Now.. level 36 to make it? WHAT?! Isn't that a bit much? Seriously, by the time someone hits 36 alchemy, they will be beyond the point of needing a potion. Very, very stupid i think on Square's part.
its not a "noobish item" as you put it just like another person said "you can level other classes" plus anyone can use a potion its not just a certain class i mean seriously, but i do agree that for an item so simple it should be a level 1 alchemy 36 is rediculous
I'm currently at 1.4 or 1.6 or something... how much gil would it cost to get to lvl 36? And does any one know the best recipe(s) that cost the least, have the best success rate, and level one's crafting skill quicker?
There is no cheap way to lvl20+ >< I started with Tsurara and Beeswax, then Deodorizer, Poison Dust, Mercury, Poison Potions till lvl16, Echo Drops and Glass Fibers, Silent Oils, Glass Fiber Fishing rods, Artificial Lenses, Potions, Vitriol and then Ether and Holy Water.
Lvl 15-28 cost me about 250k and i got about 270k back. I made 100+ glass fiber rods from 22-28 ^^; and there are still some left to sell.

Yes there is. I went from 0 to 42.5 in a few days with tsurara, poison powder, echo drops, silent oils, eye drops, potions to 37, then vitirol to 43. this only took about 15k capital and i've got about 100k after all this.
you can buy the mats for all of these cheap from npc or on the ah. tears go for about 15k on my server. but i needed to get to 30 for potions and i didn't have smithing leveled.
farming the beeswax is a must if you don't want to lose money on the silent oils. silent oils sell fast and for a nice chunk of change.
the key to making this craft work is farming what ever you can. make things that sell fast and you can get the materials cheap. with alchemy alot of stuff uses water crystals so pashhow marshlands is your friend.
