vitriol:

Any of various sulfates of metals, such as ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, or copper sulfate.

n 1: (H2SO4) a highly corrosive acid made from sulfur dioxide; widely used in the chemical industry [syn: oil of vitriol, sulfuric acid, sulphuric acid]

Well it seems to make sense considering this is used to make the "acid" weapon range... but the vitriol itself is not made from metal???.. Even though we have zinc, copper and sulfur in FFXI.

um... rather than play games all day, you might want to do some studying...

A basic highschool chemistry course would tell you that there are more (metals) than just transition metals. ergo sodium a soft solid is known as an alkide earth metal, as opposed to the typical tansition metals like copper and tin etc. also i'm assuming you used an online dictionary for this fyi: Ferrous is Iron

Also i'm afraid SE's discrption is incorect to sulferic acids, nor acids of any nature do not melt things... melting is the reaction of heat and particle movment on elements. What happens is the metal is used as an electron donor for the acid this forms a bond between the substance strong enough to break weak metallic bonds.

And rather than studying all day, you might want to loosen up...

This is a "game" it doesn't have to follow reality to the letter. Next you'll be saying "SE got it wrong, we can't cast Firaga or even Thundaga!!"

Take this **** somewhere it's wanted.

Well, it IS alchemy, so they don't exactly have to follow the rules of science.

I was waiting for a group last night and figured I would wait for one of the rams or Mary to pop in the Highlands, so I start pulling as many sapplings as I could find to pass the time. I had about 30 of them on me, and I cast Banishga II and one Aeroga and half die, and then I do the same to the others. I end up having 17 Bulbs, which was amazing considering I didn't sub THF. Since I was already a 31 Alchmiest I figured I would try this recipe out.

So I went to the guild in Bastok and used Advance Image support. On waters day I was getting half success. But 50% of that time I was gaining Alchmey lvls. I went through all the bulbs I had and found this to be one of the cheapest ways to lvl Alchmey at my lvl. I gained 1.7 points off the 17 Bulbs I had, then I called it quites for the night. Only ran me 1040 gil for to do this because I already had the bulbs.

Am going to keep doing this until I hit the cap. I strongly recommend doing this regardless of high chance of failing.

I have been able to succeed 13 lvls above my current (at 22 I am creating Artifical lenses due to the large gap in disposible crafts).
However, for lvling I would recommend staying between 2-7 above your lvl. That seems to provide the most consistant increases in skill. And I don't know if this is a change (I heard many rumors about de-synth not providing exp), but De-Synth seems to be the fastest way to gain lvls. Using the Mercury recipe, I averaged .3-.4 every 2 crafts. And almost never (between 2-7 lvls) did I not get at least .1. I failed often, but I didn't care, I had never lvled so fast in my life (cost me <10k to get 5 lvls in under 2 hours... they only hard part was, I didn't farm the Cobalt Jellyfish:). Who knows, maybe I got lucky, and the cool part about it was, since I had already made over 5 stacks of Poison Powder, my next craft (someone in my ls had water clusters they didn't want, and they gave them to me) of making Poison Potion was free (another 2 lvls at no cost:)
I then jumped to Glass Fiber, and am now (at lvl 22) doing the Artifical lenses (have only gained 1 lvl, but I have 7 lenses:). I fail ALOT though.. and don't get that much exp.

Well, that is my rant. Just giving you some background on why I said 13.
Basically I would recommend:
Something you want: within 5 lvls
Something you need: Above the lvl (preferable not desynth)
Something to lvl you: Within 2-7 lvls
If you have no choice: <10 lvls

And for the obvious, stay away from Non-Disposable Items, items that require Lightning crystals (unless you can eat the cost), and items that have more the 4 ingredients (again, unless you can eat the cost).

So, with that said. Vitriol is something I will probably start on when I complete the lvl 30 Craft quest:). I am a thf and can get the ingredients easily, and I have no probs with buying htem (on Carbunle I can get treant bulbs for about 300 gil a stack, and Water clusters I can either farm, or get for 500 gil a stack). So to get 12 attempts it will only cost me 1100 gil. That is the cheapest craft short of Holy water (which if you know the tricks to getting light crystals... it is only 12 gil per.

Man....I'd like to know that light crystal trick to up my alchemy...

Alright, the trick to light crystals is easy. Takes about 3 days for 1 stack (I get anywhere between 10-18).
10 Brass Pots
10 Grain Seeds
10 Dark Crystals
Plant on Earth/Windday
Feed on Light day (between 8:00 and 20:00)
Harvest doesn't appear to matter, but I would stick to lightday, preferably near a full moon, but again, doesn't appear to matter that much.
You will get 1-4 (ussually 2) light crystals from each plant. Averaging 5 plants giving a return. Ussually you will get Coral Fungus and Tarutaru rice on the remaining pots. The Coral fungus sells for some gil (I would recommend selling it to a merchant just to get rid of it), and then you make a stack of holy water (I ussually just sell it to the chocobo merchant cause it doesn't sell that often in the ah... unless I am going to the gusgen mines, I try and keep a couple on hand).
If you use this to up your crafting, you should find that selling to a vendor makes it break pretty close to even. If you have the time to farm for your dark crystals and your grain seeds you get a pretty profit... but just like anything, farming your ingredients is always the most desirable, if you have the time.

Anyways, I just have that going on my mule, I ussually try and grow a couple Black rocks to re-coop the costs of gardening, and grow the light crystals to do my crafting. I now can make a stack of Prism Powders for the cost of 2 fire crystals (200 gil). If I have the time, I grow the light crystals, farm the lightning clusters and goby masks... which reminds me, need to post an update to that:)
