I'm trying to lvl woodworking and the two NPC's mentioned above don't sell this. Where can I buy this cheap so that I can make a profit off Shihei? I'm on Odin and Black Ink goes for 14000gil at AH, while Shihei go for only 10000gil. At that rate Shihei are not profitable to make!
You don't level up on it. You wait until your 80+ when you can HQ2 it.

Are you saying a stack of black ink is going for 14k and a stack of shihei is going for 10k? If that is the case, depending on how much crystals and bast parchment is on your server, you would probably make a nice little profit because 1 stack of ink will yield 4 stacks of shihei with no breaks.
Thats 40k from the shihei minus 1 stack of ink, 2 stacks of bast parchment, and a stack of wind crystals.
Well consider that the average cost of parchment from the NPC in Norg is 1000-1200 gil thats 24000 to 28800 (and thats with me being at hero level fame) then add the 14000 gil for ink and the 2-3k for crystals lets add this up Hrm at his level he's shelling out 57k according to your formula so no, he's not making a nice little profit. The only way to make any profit with shihei is to farm everything. I suggest not worrying about the shihei until you have 45+ woodworking then you can farm elm logs and get x12 parchment from one log. Then as long as you have 20+ fishing you can fish up the nebi's and make the black ink as well. The other minor ingrdnts are purchased in Windurst at a very very small fee. Even if you can manage to purchase an Elm Log before they are sold out you are paying 10k-11k @ hero level fame as well.
The Cone Calamary recipe is definately NOT lvl 55 cap. I posted this recipe, and I think the folks at Alla misread my post when I said that I had 55 Alchemy when attempting it. At that level, I was HQing most of the synths, so it is probably <10 cap.
Also, the recipe posted does NOT produce 2 Black Ink. The willow log recipe gives 1 Ink. I tried substituting Tea Leaves for the log and didn't get a result, but ffxi.cannotlinkto says that there is a recipe using the leaves. Maybe they added it in an update? I'll try it out for myself.
contrary to other peoples post, the cone calimary DOES give you two ink a synth. I did it tonight with my hual of the day and made 2 every synth and 4 on a HQ1.
Either they have changed it since, or the person who said it only did one never actually did the synth.

that is actually the original recipe for the black ink. i remember almost synthing this for skill-ups so long ago, but i went with the Tsura(sp?) till 10. all others have been added in slowly. i think mainly for all the ninjas out there that synth their own shihei.
Sorry... I was referring to the recipe using Cone Calamary. ffxi.cannotlinkto lists a recipe using two cone calamary, distilled water and two tea leave bunches. When I originally tried out this recipe, I could only get a result if I used a willow log instead of tea leaves, and recieved an NQ result of 1 ink. This may have changed in an update, though unfortunately I have yet to test it out myself. Can someone please verify?

I've been trying to do the lvl 55 cap synthesis for black ink~ cone calamaryx2, distilled waterx1, willow logx1~ and after a few stacks of synthesizing...maybe 3 stacks of materials. I've gotten many HQs...and 0 skill ups. So either i'm having some terrible luck or the cap is wrong! HMMMMMM!!!! Time to look for a new recipe...(>.<)
I've ran into the same thing as you, the 55 cap on that synthesis recipe is wrong. Also, the yield is wrong, a normal yield is 2, and HQ1 is 4. maybe the synth level is actually 5, but poster accidentaly hit 5 twice

All HQ returns were personally confirmed. As I am 65 Alchemy, I cannot comment on the level cap, though my HQ rate was comparable to other Black Ink recipes. I would guess the recipe caps at 10 or below.
Cone Calamary stacks have only been sold 5 times on Valefor's Jeuno AH. If you want to try this recipe, you'll probly hafta fish for them yourself at this point. Batallia Downs with a Hume Fishing Rod and Minnow for bait pulled in a ton.
*EDIT* I have tried replacing the willow log with 2x Windurstian Tea Leaves, which did not produce a result. After tinkering with different proportions of Calamary and Tea Leaves, it looks like the only recipe involves thw Willow Log. Unfortunately, it looks like the 1,2,3,4 Ink result scheme is all we're going to get from Cone Calamary.
Hi. Just wanted to start making Shihei. so i made the trip to bastok to find that neither NPC listed as selling black ink actually had if for sale. Is this item only sold when bastok has control of certain areas, or did the NPC change, or what happened.
Titus in the alchemy guild gave me two different recipes for Black Ink when I asked him twice for synthesis materials. The first was the normal one: Crystal: Dark 2 x Windurstian Tea Leaves 1 x Nebimonite 1 x Flask of distilled Water
The second, though, was this: Crystal: Dark 2 x Windurstian Tea Leaves 1 x Grimmonite 1 x Flask of distilled water

Shihei requires woodworking to make. Lvl 39ish is the cap for shihei. I think yiou were thinking of Bast Parchment, which you need lvl 45 ish woodworking and lvl 29 alchemy as a cap.
no. the lvl 29 cap on shihei is for woodworking. it doesnt require any other skills to make. if it did, I would be seeing something else increase cause my alchemy is only at lvl 4.

The way to profit off these is to HQ synth them. Without HQ it costs me 18k to make them (13.5k for fish, 1k for 2 stacks of windurst tea leaves, 3k for dark crystal, and 500 for distilled water) This would give me 2 stacks of black ink at 7k each for 14k income and 3k loss.
HQ1= 4 black ink HQ2= 6 black ink
at lvl 20 alchemy i make 6 extra black ink so after 2 stacks of ingreidents i am up 1k. At higher lvls profits go up.
go to zvahl castle to farm drak crystals and go to vendor to buy distill water for 10~12 each, and windurst waters for the windurst leaf for around 20 something or less each, it will save u a lot more. minus the dark crystal it should save u about around 1k, with dark crystal it should save u around 4k
Even with level 70 Alchemy it's not worth synthing. With 12 synths it cost me 17.2k, I made three stacks of ink and sold them for a total of 19.5. That's 2.3k profit. Ouch >.< I have better things to synth for the three slots of AH space.
He did. And "Ninjitsu" is a common misspelling of "Ninjutsu." The "-jutsu" ending is something like "the special art of," and as often as it's used, should be properly spelled. =P
