I just completed the quest for this sword yesterday and the sword looks really cool!!!! I would though probably use a wand for spells but the attack isnt horridble. It parrys alot more offten then the centorions sword so its a good deal for all rdms (only for rdms lol).

Combat Skill vs. weapon type
# Dec 06 2004 at 1:07 AM Rating: Decent
Ok... I think i understand what the confusion is about. While there are many different sword types that fall under the sword class of weapon, the certain types of swords are organized in relatively reliable groups of which jobs can equip certain types of swords that fall under the weapon class of sword. Now this is an AF weapon and that doesn't apply because obviously only rdm can equip it. but think about how their are long swords, rapiers, short swords, scimitars etc... Some jobs can equip certain types of sword class weapons while they cannot equip others.

For parties i really find more useful a wand, even most of u say rdmages fight, well
i dont do as much damage fighting, and think im more useful debuffing the mob, refreshing , back up healing and elemental magic casting on it
just my opinion though
RE: Wand
# Dec 07 2004 at 5:25 PM Rating: Decent
I'd rather have a rdm doing his magic job (Enfeebling), refreshing, and backup healing/nuking. Notice they are redMAGES and should be using magic. This isn't the dunes anymore guys, time to start doing your intended job. You shouldn't argue now that blm's have scythe's you don't see them in the action? Think of that before you say you should be melee.

redMAGES

So what you are saying is that Redmages
are a magic class only ?
Yeah I guess you are right...
Summoners don't have the word mage in it
so they shouldn't summon and just melee(LMAO <.<)...
I'm a RDM42 currently don't know much about
the job but just because we have mage in our
name doesn't mean that is all we can
do there is much more into our job.
I think its better to have a sword and do
some decent damage than have a club and have an INT+4 MND+4 wand that allows me to Cure 2HP more
or do 10-20~ more damage with my nukes...
Altough I do swap sword and wand...there are things called macros that allow you to use the 2 in each ocasion.
My macro changes my weapon to wand I cast the spell and change to sword again...You can't imagine...IT ACTUALLY WORKS ! -.-" That way I don't have to choose over one weapon, altough if I had to I would choose sword.

-Sorry about any grammar errors.

If a player is incapable of doing all those things while being in melee, then yes they should not be in melee.

I am fully capable of doing all these things in melee (or at least the people who compliment me must think so). It's not like being in melee needs any kind of attention. If the mob moves, you move. Otherwise you just stand there. Since you're switching to wand to cast spells you're not building TP anyway, so no need to worry about WS/SC (except for MB, of course).

And actually, I have seen a BLM use a Scythe soloing. But the fact is in parties they should (ideally) have no down time between spells, meaning that they would never get a chance to hit anyway. But there's only so much you can debuff and refresh, and honestly you should be able to do it all just as well while standing there hitting the mob as standing somewhere else and not hitting the mob.

um... you don't play blm do you? One of the first things you learn when pt'ing with blm is how bad back to back casting is (except for DoT spells like frost, burn, choke, ect..). It'll steal hate from the tank everytime. Hell, sometimes i can't even B2B enfeebles like paralyze, slow, blind, gravity (when rdm) without getting hate. That said, it's all about knowing how much hate you are drawing from the mob.

There is a difference between RDM and BLM
as a RDM I can take a few hits ( I don't even get that much aggro even when I nuke ) so I ALWAYS FIGHT EVEN THOUGH I'M A TARUTARU AND PEOPLE SAY THAT I'M JUST A BACK LINE RDM cause ... I don't even get that much aggro and I have decent HP and VIT (I repeat DECENT) to take some hits.
But yeah as a BLM I always stay behind the melee (2-3 hits can kill me)

I have to agree that no delay casting is problematic, Qufim was always fun Rasp + Thunder real quick got me hit right at the start of each fight. But please notice that it says "ideally" which is true, but never works in practice.

I see a lot of people saying that they switch out equipment/roles a lot, I do too even as blm. I have a scythe with me all the time, and will even use it in a pt if it's reasonable. If we have a rdm, it's probably reasonable; bard, probably not; both, heck yeah. When it's scythe time on goes STR+ and DEX+ stuff along with a life belt (kinda embarassing to see drks and such that don't have one when I do), casting gets all the INT+ stuff (including a wand), and resting gets dark staff and seer's tunic. Always entertaining when things get rough (usually when an AoE silence hits) for a blm to fire off Nightmare Scythe for 135 damage then shortly thereafter a drg does Penta Thrust for 6...that actually happened, both the first and second time I got to see penta it did less than 10 damage.

If anyone reads that and wants to try meleeing with a scthye, I find a good pattern is swing, swing, nuke with a ninja or warrior tank; swing, nuke, swing, swing, nuke or just swing, nuke with a pld is ok; of course not waiting at all to cast/recast enfeebles. I judge it a good pattern because I don't pull aggro away from the tank, but still can if needed...if the tank goes down I'm next anyway and we're all probably going with him, if I die we can still kinda fight (slowly yeah, but better than not at all).

Agreed. Some people don't realize that to be a good RDM, you must do a lot of all the above. An RDM is a specialist in enfeebling magic, so if present it is their job to '***** with' the mob first thing. But they also have pretty decent damage when correctly set up (solid wand and +int or +mnd rings for casting, buzzard tuck with +str and +dex rings when melee). The RDM is similar to the Bard in that they are around to help the PT fight faster and get better chains than otherwise. They accomplish this by enfeebling the mob, buffing the PT, attacking, doing Refresh, etc. As a good RDM, you should have a lot of spare equip on you so that you can adapt to the role your PT needs you in.

Sometimes I'll start out in the PT as the enfeebler and backup healer, then later we'll need more damage dealing,e tc - so I'll switch equip for str, dex, vit, etc instead of int and mnd. Then later maybe they need a enfeeb / light nuker, so again an equip change. RDM can fill in many roles if the player is good.

My typical things in a fight when the mob is pulled: (I'm RDM40 currently)

(when meleeing, make sure that Phalanx or Stoneskin is up to save a lot of headaches)

1. Paralyze, Slow, Gravity, Choke mob (or variant depending on mobs elemental weakness)

2. Regen tank or anybody else that needs it that the WHM didn't cast on immediately (while WHMs counter is ticking or while they are castin on their first target)

3. Possibly throw a few nukes

4. Depending on mob HP and my own MP - either:
- enelement myself and melee for a bit to help reduce mob HP
- rest to fill MP for chain

5. If resting, try to stay resting as long as possible - but obviously stand and throw a few Cures if needed.

6. Dispel whenever needed.

At 41, of course it will change with the addition of the refresh cycle.

So I just got this sword and I'm lvl 42, I was wondering how long should i equip it before upgrading for a new one?
RE: How long?
# Oct 03 2005 at 2:25 PM Rating: Decent
honestly you should prolly replace it right now. buzzard tuck is 1 lvl lower and just a better sword. if your worried about loseing the int or mnd then your prolly better off setting up a bunch of macros to swap in a wand and a bunch of other int/mnd gear, then the spell. get used to gear swaps, i'm rdm66 and my inventorys like 53/60,mostly gear :(

my recommendation is stick with your AF1 until level 47, then buy a Knight's Sword or a Knight's Sword +1.

The Crimson Blade at lvl 45 is overall pretty good too, it has better base damage and while you lose the +1 mnd and +10 to mp you gain +4 to int. I dunno, the degen looks really cool tho even tho on the tarutaru it looks like a really long toothpick.

Don't listen to any redmage that tells you to just buy a wand for parties. Have a wand in your inventory and use macros to switch between sword and wand when casting spells. If your not casting you should have your sword out using en-spells and taking damage as any damage is good damage. RDM's are built and designed by nature to be a hyrbid melee/magic character. Our en-spells and AF armor should help one see that. Its your call on the sowrd though. If the damage isn't enough then use another sowrd. I personally have several rings a wand and a sword when going into battle and use different combinations as I see fit. Your call...good luck!

For farming/soloing, just keep it until you're noticing that your damage... sucks.

For partying, buy a Solid Wand and keep it until 48 when you'll get a Rose Wand.

Think of it this way: A rapier is type a sword. A crossbow is not a conventional bow, you shoot it similar to a rifle. There. Everyone happy?
SOOOOOO:
Rapier, just like Long Sword, Scimatar, Epee, etc., falls under Sword.

Bow (non-crossbow) is Archery.

You shoot a Crossbow and Gun nearly the same way so they are both Marksmanship.
This thread makes Jesus sad.

Sword class weapons:
Saber, Rapier, Scimitar, Falchion, Long Sword, Xiphos, etc.

All of those are swords, but they generally have reflects of that class. Rapier's generally being weaker and faster swords. Scimitar's being the best balance of speed and power.

If you'd pay attention you'll also notice all the daggers and such do this.

Dagger: Knife, Baselard, Kukri.
Club: Hammer, Mace, Wand.

And yes, ONLY bows are for Archery skill. Crossbows and guns fall under marksmanship.
