Ancient Xiphos lost in sea?
# Jun 24 2008 at 1:00 AM Rating: Default
Rumor has it that this Xiphos was lost long ago and now carries a curse
not

Extensive testing!
# Jun 14 2005 at 9:21 AM Rating: Excellent
Ok, I'm a 64Rdm/32Whm Tarutaru on the Cerberus server, and I just completed some rather extensive testing with this sword.

Here's what I did: I went out to Rolanberry Fields, and started cutting away at Death Wasps. I started on Firesday, at midnight, and just kept kutting for 1 entire game-day. Not only did I figure out how often it Curses, but I also figured out how effective the Curse is.

The setup: It was Firesday, with a Waxing Crescent (38%) moon. I have 52 Dex, Atk:232 (with the sword equipped), Str: 47-5, and Sword skill of 203. I split my results by section of day, in order to find out if the Curse effect was affected by time of day.

For the first section (0:00-04:00), I had the following results: (bear in mind, I recorded number of hits, but didn't think to record how many kills)

3 separate Curse instances, the first after 34 hits, the second after 22 hits, and the third after 36 hits. If you do the math, that means that for this section, there proved to be about a 3% chance of Curse (a little less than, since there were only 92 hits total).

For the second section, the day section, I recorded the following:

4 separate instances, the first after 26 hits, the second after a whopping 74 hits, the third after 23 hits, and the fourth after 56 hits. By the same math, that means that by day you stand a 2.2% chance.

For the third section, the last night section, I recorded the following results:

3 separate instances, the first after 11 hits, the second after 28 hits, and the third after 27 hits. For this section, there was a 4.5% chance.

If you want to compile the stats for the entire day, there was a total of 10 instances, in 337 hits, or a roughly 3% chance.

It might be well-noted that the odds were noticeably better during night-time.

However, during my testing, I discovered a deeper, more fascinating phenomenon. I had a ton of Critical hits! And we're not just talking about a lucky day, I mean, a *TON* of critical hits!

During the night-time, the critical hits were at about average, but as soon as day came, I was getting a steady 1 in 4 hits as Critical! Hidden stat maybe? I don't know, but I'll go back for more testing later.

Now, on to the section you really care about: How effective is the Curse? Well, this required a little investigative work. After my day of killing was done, I went back and tried to record about how much Dmg it took to kill a Death Wasp. For this, I could only record the natural kills, whereby I did not Curse them, nor did they use Final Sting. My math here is imprecise, since obviously I can't see how much hp they really have, but near as I can figure, they have on average about 620hp. Now, I hadn't really planned on being able to give you a stat of what that's reduced to with Curse, since the effect is, after all, random, but I got lucky! During 2 fights, the Curse effect happened with the very first hit! That meant I got to record how much hp it took to kill them! Yay me! Lol, at any rate, for those 2, it took far less to kill them; It only took about 530 Dmg to kill them. This might not be a huge difference when they're Too Weak anyways, but think of it this way: This means that were you to pull off this same ratio and effect on a PT-worthy IT, you would be reducing its HP by about 15%. Quite worth the 30k I paid for mine, in my opinion.

I have every intention of continuing testing, for different days, moon phases, and mob levels. Give me a little feedback; would you want to see the rest of the data?

Dragonli, Cerberus Server. I like to help, just send a /tell!

If you want to find out a mobs exact hp, use windower to calculate how much percentage hp they lose from a hit. With that hint I'm sure you can work out what to do next ^^

I'm an old-fashioned geek, and prefer to follow the rules <snicker>, so I figured it all out the hard way. I did some more testing, and it has all remained fairly steady, more or less true to the stats I mentioned in my previous post. Yes, the moon phase has a noticeable effect on the success rate and potency of the Curse, as does Darksday/Lightsday. If you want some fun, grab one of these things on Darksday at night! I gave one of these to a Nin friend of mine, and he uses it on HNM's and the like. Trust me, you will appreciate this thing on an HNM! It may take a while to Curse, but you'll be glad when it does. Also, note that although the Curse usually fades rather quickly, the mob does not regain that hp unless it has magic or abilities to do so. In other words, if you fight a mob with 1000 hp, and the first hit induces Curse, the mob's max hp will drop to 850. Even after Curse lifts, it will still only have that 850 hp. Granted, this is fairly uncommon, and shouldn't be expected, but under the exact ideal conditions, it can be helpful. Not so great during mid-fight, since lowering the max hp won't do squat, so put it away after you take off 25% or so of the mob's hp, since aside from the Curse effect and the incredible increase in Critical hits, this sword actually kinda sucks. Right now, I'm thinking that the only other use for this thing might be when facing a really tough mob that tends to heal itself. Induce Curse, and when it tries to heal, it won't be able to go over that lowered hp, saving unnecessary hits. This would be the perfect time for Blm's and Drk's to focus on Aspir, if the mob is a mage-type. After the mp is sucked dry, put the sword away. Sound useless? Maybe. But consider, while the mob tries to cure itself, your melee won't have to chip away at that extra 15%, saving time/energy, if the mob spams their healing move. I wouldn't drag this sword to an exp pt, but I'd definitely consider starting BCNM's and HNM's with it.
It works

According to my friend, the sword does not curse at all, as was said before. He said it was a waste of gil, and was tempted to call a GM. Personally, I wanted to see a little curse action, but I guess that won't be happening anytime soon. =( Tip to those who aren't completely rich: Don't buy it unless you just want to mess around with it.

(PS: Just posting from what a friend said, if it's not true, as said by many before:
Wasn't me!)

Tempted to call a GM because the item didn't work? If it didn't work then why was the description "Additional Effect: Curse" on it?
effect rate?

What's the chancce of this item activating the effect? With a great effect like curse, I think the chance of curse working is a 1% chance. I might be wrong though, being 500k on my server.
waist of gil
# Nov 27 2004 at 10:46 PM Rating: Default
On my server, Fenrir this sword is 250K and it DOES NOT induce curse all it does is adds slow dia bio and gravity it is a COMPLETE waist of gil i am telling you all dont buy it
RE: waist of gil
# Dec 04 2004 at 3:51 PM Rating: Decent
What makes you think that? Also, dia and bio do not stack. They overwrite eachother in the order Bio2>Dia2>Bio>Dia check the rdm forums. Curse effect lowers max hp and mp and lowers movement speed, like gravity.
chr, mnd?

like i said, there is a CHANCE of cursing your target with every swing, not that it would happen...

btw, i have Misery Staff and its quite fun to farm with it ^^ ... i wouldnt use it in a party tho, due to never really getting a chance to swing on the mob in a good party (im a 40BRD these days)
pricy

Is this sword used as a component for another recipe? It doesn't seem very great of a sword for the lengths you have to go through to catch it.

Has any one tried using a light crystal or lightning crystal on it?

You recieve this sword as a reward from Zaldon in Selbina by giving him a Titanicus fish. The sword is a random reward, so it should take many to give to him. To get Zaldon to open up his bounties, you'll have to complete all 3 of Oswald's quests.
