First off. I went as a bst 58 after getting the key item as brd. I summoned Tros no problem. Battle took 3 mins. Used a Fungar Jug pet and just wasted the NM. I took less than 100 damage from aoe, and pet was not even a down a quater of its life. I am sure any Job could solo this 55+ and with the brd to help I am sure you could go 50.
Thats my 2 cents worth! Take it or leave it!

Ok, Paper knife does a fair amount of Damage as far as daggers go but nothing special. It also has +2 AGI and CHR. Agi gives < 1 Evasion so no biggie there, and CHR+2 Isnt the best in the world. It is very rare to see a Resist at levels below 55. So this knife is not that fantastic. KillingIfrit.com states that this knife has another purpose, "sing effectve rises". I just got this knife and have done one test sofar. Tried a minne with then w/o the knife equipped. I also had Harp +1 equipped. There was no difference in the results. I am wondering where this information came from or if it is true. If anyone has more info on this stat, please post here. Thanks
PS: Choosing a Weapon varies on what you are doing in a party, at lvl 40, If you are meleeing, use a sword/dagger with Elegent shield (or another lvl 30 one.) If you are having problems with resists, which i really doubt you have at that level, Use a Monster Signa or a Chanters Staff. I reccommed Chanter's because of the Singing Skill + that boosts songs potency. Using a Staff also allows you to focus your other equip on other things besides CHR. Also consider using macros to swich your weapon. (^o^)_b
I got this knife the other day. I thought it would look really gay with the picture of it on all of the websites. This is the real pic and it looks awesome. Too bad its not the greatest. :(
Just soloed this as a 67 thf/nin. Was a pretty quick fight, he only actually hit me twice, and most of his damage came from his special attacks rather than waterga 2. I had +15 resistance to water and -2% magic damage taken and was only getting hit for like 33 by waterga 2, but for like 150 by whirlwind and tentacle. Couldn't keep shadows up so nin stub was kind of pointless, he spams aoe but high evasion helps massivly. I spammed bloody bolts and was able to drain 30-60 per hit then ws which was better than hitting him for 20 per hit. Ended the fight w/ about half hp, but was overall an easy fight. As a mithra brd i have to say ill stick w/ signa b/c even with +21 chr and capped skills i get resists when im the lowest one in the pt, and id rather have the +40 mp off mp rings and use signa then have +chr rings and use a dagger. *tosses the dagger in storage*
Yes. I soloed it as a 54 BST. That means, no one inside or outside my party (Wasn't in one, and was only one in the zone) helped me at all.
It took an hour of kiting and some trial and error (Tros has some nifty little suprises for the cocky person looking to solo him).
I had to deal with the fact CourierCarrie took full damage on Waterga 2 and enwater (Enwater did like 20+100-250 to both me and CourierCarrie) and I didn't bring and pet food (I had 40 stacks of pet food zeta I synthed for profits in my MH, and shoulda brought some).
I had to kite Tros w/o losing hate and allowing him to go back to his spawn position and regen to 100%. The first few CC's (First three) all died relatively fast, but each took about 1/3 his hp away.
I eventually was able to find some "eyes" and higher level scorpions that I could throw at Tros (The ooze I tossed at him one time was one-shotted) while wiating on Call Beast recast. Anyway, I finally did it with 3 more CC and a total of an hour's time...
Looking at some of the posts above, I'm the lowest lvl of any job to solo him? I feel sooo much better about my skills as a BST after soloing Tros...
k if u want to just barely scrape by this quest by the scruff of the neck.... this is what i did
lv 45bard (deleveld after first fight = / and killed him as lv 44) and a 50ranger and 49 whm.
we lost the first fight (by a sliver) from a waterga and won the second one easier (we prepared better, i thauight it would be easy fight, stupid me = /) water carol and Paeon 3 or 4 if u have it ^^ and we had 3 dancing wepons on us (poped halfway thru fight) so horde lullybye worked fairly well too ^^
All af quests are repeatable, there's an npc in Jeuno I believe that'll erase your memory of completing af quests... mainly for those who may have thrown away AF before the npcs that store sets of AF armour came along.
My friend, a level 50 Bard, and me, a level 40 Bard, both needed this knife.
So, we got set to go there, and we realized "Hey... we're Bards. We'll suck alone."
So.... we got a level 75 Black Mage who was very generous and bored to come and almost completely solo Tros. Thunder IV -> Thunder III, it died.
I didn't care about how cheap it was, I had to log off soon and I wanted m'damn knife.
Oh, and for those that are curious, this may or may not seem obvious, but if you have two Bards, only one needs to click the Waters of Oblivion at the start and you only have to fight Tros once.

Took only 3 of us and 5 minutes of my time, aside from the short trip there.
57 WAR/MNK 60 WHM/BLM 40 BRD/WHM
Cleared weapons then buffed/rested. Clicked the "Waters of Oblivion", NM spawned but didn't have any time to attack me before WAR voked it. Only dmg I took was because of the AOE which wasn't all too potent due to Barwatera and Water Carol up. Sung a few songs and threw out a heal or two, but that was it. GL everyone in obtaining your Paper Knife.
I am the 57War that tanked this NM, in case you're wondering how the fight worked out from my end. I used my solo set up, basically I put on a nomad's mantle two dodge earrings and weild the long boomerang. Anything from taking any damage at all. If it can't hit me, it can't hurt me right. I had forgotten to take the Emp.Hairpin with me though. I asked for an agility song and ate a Bream Sushi (a cheap way to greaten accuracy and increase vitality too). The second I saw it in the waters of oblivion (nice name), I provoked it. Not going to let it hit Enixsoft. ;)
AoE were the only complications during this fight, he uses it quite frequently. Enixsoft had low HP about the same time the weapons (which I had cleared out before he and Drizzdourden got here) appeared back. By that time Drizzt was resting and took care of the aggro while I finished off the NM.
I enjoyed the battle, but and I greatly suggest a healer. I went in the orange roughly 5 times and saw damage inflicted on me for over 100 (when he hit). Hope this gives you a taste of what the NM fight is like.
i am a lvl 40 bard and going to get this immediately. i very rarely get resisted as is also but the CHR bonus will still help the duration and strength of the songs. jus because songs arent resisted doesnt mean that they are as strong as they could be. that is my opinion at least. everyone plays diff and i am not flaming anyone.
well as a lvl 58 Bard i have to say i still use this dagger like 90 % of the time and sometimes if the party is good i can use Shellbuster (club)
*i dont have the light staff but dont tell anyone*
as for CHR+ stuff for bard/ i dont think its needed that much and if something resists than switch either equiment or set your macro to cast "Enchanting Etude" before song cast
I've found that leveling bard for 41 levels that (as much as the mob resists my debuffs, I hardly ever have time to due to the kick butt factor of my parties) you don't really need all that CHR, and being a taru the -VIT isn't very good, I've used dagger since level 10, and have it capped, but as far as I was concerned... at level 48 you get shellbuster (a few -attacking stats and +4CHR) you only switched it out for your light/dark staves for regeneration / healing, and that once you were ready to fight maat, you just skilled up sword for Spirits within and yor dagger skill because BRD has a B+ in dagger... so my conclusion to this run on paragraph, is that the paper knife seems to be useful for the 8 levels you use it...just my 2 cents
I just reached lvl 40 for my BRD yesterday and ive already started the AF1 quest, but i cant seejm to see why this weapon is so great. Like many have said, I also have yet to get a resist...another downside to the paper knife for me is that my dagger skill is 9 ~___~; I've been using Whale staff since lvl 32, building my skill for that Apollo's staff I've saved up for. Anyway, I'm probably gonna have to get it, seing that i need it to get all the other useless BRD AF stuff...
Yeah, just hit 37 last night and am exctited to go after this. Have a 65 NIN and 65 RDM already there to help me out :)
I really think that Paper Knife + Elegant Shield is going to be better for my soft little taru body than Monster Signa. I may get it eventually, but I would really hate to have to skill up staff to a useful level, and besides, I have yet to see anything I see get resisted.

Seeing as how i've leveled Bard 41 levels without the Signa and got exactly zero resists the whole way, I'd say this knife is pretty slick. IMHO, Monster Signa is somewhat over-rated, mostly because of the 200k+ pricetag it carries. Mabye at later levels where you're always fighting IT++ mobs it comes in handy, but so far I've felt no need for it.
Very easy fight with our setup! By the time I sang Water Carol (for its Waterga II AoE) and Barwatera and sang Minuet II, it had a sliver of life left. ^^
Once you hit 40, there are SO many items you can get for CHR and easily afford, you don't need Signa. Need, bards really never NEEDed signa, it was more of a status symbol. I was happy with my Dolphin Staff for extra MP, and i still dont get resists.

I guess it's ok for poor and/or lazy bards like me who can't buy a monster signa or camp for one. I tried camping and it sucked, there were jp everywhere. Kind of sad, since chances are they're just going to sell it. Anyway, I'll be using that knife, unless I somehow get about 400-500k :/

Ok, so it's not fantastic. I don't think any of the AF1's are really fantastic anyhow. But TopIdler was pretty correct when he said it's the best knife of its level. It really is.
Broom-wielders trump this in terms of CHA bonus, but this knife is pretty nice overall. I ran through Giddeus for many an hour holding nothing but this knife in my quest for norg fame. It served me well. :)
For the bard on a budget, hold onto this until you can equip a shellbuster.
just faught this guy and he was one hard mother. had drg 56/war23---> me =) war49/somethin and brd40/whm20 no whm was a mistake. the war died in like 5sec cause of a hit that did 500 damage (ouch!!) i super jumped after penta thrust and gave hate to my wyvern who tanked till his end. managed to kill him off with the brd healing me, was VERY close though. so a peice of advice, dont be cocky about your skills, bring a whm

This is the bard AF1 item. It is 2 uber. The best knife I see possible at this lvl and it's all ours! Hhahaah! Well corrsive baselard looks nice 2 but this gives +2 agi and +2 CHR! HAHAHAH!
