Ok I just went and did this quest. Fishing skill I started with was at lvl 13. I got my halcyon rod and my minnow lure went to go fish I did a total of 34 cast and this is what I got. (numbers are cast in a row)
By this time I was getting pissy so I went to npc bought a stack of lugworms and went back to fishing useing Halcyon rod and Lugworms.(numbers are cast in a row)
Okay, i was doing the quest that involves the "Fat Greedie" i read ffxiclopedia and they said use Halycon Rod and Sardine Balls. So i tried that 2 stacks and nothing but Greedies. Decided to try another setup.
Came to Selbina to fish up cobalt jellies for farming. Pulled up a fat greedie on my first cast standing over in the corner near the subjob quest. Fishing level 12, composite rod, worm lure, Angler's tunica.

Ok, so im waiting for a pt in Selbina, and start fishing for the hell of it.... Just using Tarutaru fishing rod and Lugworms, and i catch this thing. I ask a fisher near me what it is, and they tell me it's for a quest, and that they're looking for it to. A while later, i catch another (obviously having to let it go) and the guy next to me is getting more and more annoyed, so i ask if they wanna trade rods. We do a swap, they catch a Fat Greedie on the first try XD So it's official, crapness is the key to catching this fish :P And Deathangel, you owe me one!
my skill was not even lvl one and i caught it i almost did not cuz it said i have a bad feeling about this one but i took it anyway and freaked when it was a greedie but question whats the point of catching them if u cannot sell them cannot cut em open and cannot do the quest over..........
fishing for a while no fat greedies ( quest was done long time ago) at once FAT greedie was like lol funny couldn't eat it since i'm not a mithra anyone knows the stats on it ? then greedie oke ... FAT GREEDIE O>O + 0.2 skillup ( was lvl 11 at that point.) FAT greedie wtf ? FAT greedie OMFG lol? FAT greedie + 0.1 skillup FAT greedie from there on random other stuff but it was a REALLY weird day.
I experienced the same thing last night while leveling in Selbina / Valkurm. I had to let go over half a dozen of the darn things! Meanwhile, my husband is looking over my shoulder sputtering and cursing my luck. Hehe <(^.^)>
My stats: Level 10-11 Halcyon Rod Lugworms Far SW corner in Selbina (near the subjob NPC) Darksday / Firesday

I used a Tarutaru fishing rod. Paid 100 gil to sit on the pier. Used a minnow for bait. (It was nighttime, if you feel that makes a difference) First cast, Fat Greedie. Fishing skill level 1. :D

Funny thing. I was waiting for the ferry in Selbina and fished with Halcyon rod + Minnow. Caught only Fat Greedies. 10 casts -> 10 Fat Greedies.. Fishing skill 52
I got the Fat Greedie in one shot with Fishing skill 9.1, 2 pieces of Fishing gear, at dusk on lightsday on the pier to the boat to Mhaura. Obviously, it's of benefit to simply pay the 100 gil to get to the pier, fish, and then leave. Not sure the reward is worth it, but it's your best bet to complete the quest.
I took someones advice from here and paid a ticket for the boat and fished off the pier. Got the Fat Greedie in 5 tries.
Before that, I fished in Selbina forever and didn't get it. So I think being at the pier helps. Especially since in part of the quest they say he lost it by the pier
Was fishing in Selbina. Skill @ 14. Caught one... "You caught a fat greedie, however your inventory is full. Regretfully you release the fat greedie again."
I read through these posts, and someone said that near the Subjob guy was where they caught it. Used Minnow Lure with Comp Rod. After 3 hours (real time) of fishing, got lots of Greedies, but no Fat ones. Decided to try right off the dock, paid for my ticket to the boat, and sure enough...FIRST CAST: Greedie. SECOND CAST: Nothing. THIRD CAST: Fat Greedie. Just letting everyone know it is easy to catch him when you know where to go.

I have heard if you fish off the pier it can make a difference but I think the day has a big influence too. I caught mine with a fishing skill of level 2, a taru rod, a minnow lure, and it was on Lightening Day at night. I don't remember the moon phase but I was not on the pier.

I was solo leveling WHM(13) in Konschtat(sp.) Highlads, and died. Since San d'Oria controls the Zulkeim Region i had HP set in Selbina. When I died I decided to fish for this, since I have had the quest for ages. Caught it on the 3rd cast with a Lugworm and Carbon Rod, fishing skill about 7.5, +4 from full gear. Windsday, 17:54 Waxing Gibbous (64%)
Edit: o yea and i wasn't on "The Pier" where you board the ship. I was over by the Sub Job quest guy.
omg...i think i'm goin crazy! i have the quest open, and have tried for hours to catch one of these jerks. i have gone through 20 stacks of lugworms, have used comp rod, broke 2 taru rods and 1 fastwater....nothing i do can catch it. i dun know if it makes a dif, but i'm much higher in skill lvl. i'm going on 27 and have all gear. why can't i get it?!?! all i can catch is normal greedies, bastore sardines, and quus (and occasionally some bass)...any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
Edit : i swear...five minutes after i posted this, i caught it. i really think it has to do with the pier. after i posted, i entered area for ferry, and caught it on my second cast. seconds after buying some crayfish paste from a bazaar (i was willing to try anything!)
i got a fat greedie w/ lvl 0 fishing skill on my 4th cast. here's how it went- 1st cast...nothing caught 2nd cast...Quus caught 3rd cast...nothing caught 4th cast...Fat Greedie caught i also got another fattie on my 7th cast. it was Lightsday around 7:00 game time. Wanning Crescent 43%. i used a taru taru fishingpole and lugworms. i felt pretty lucky on these results. good luck to you fishers!
I don't know how long it took me, but I also used a Taru fishing pole with lugworms at 0 fishing skill. In fact, I have about .6 fishing skill after today. But, yeah, much easier to catch than I thought it would have been.
How i got it was: Fishing skill lvl: 8 (had done first fishing test). Rod used: Glass fiber rod. Pait used: Lugworms. fishing gear: Angler's glowes, angler's hose, angler's tunica and angler's boots. catch point:left side of subjob guest guy.
1.) Talk to Oswald (Quest Start) 2.) Talk to a person in the Mayor's Office. (I can't remember the name.) 3.) Talk to the Galka in the back of the Fisherman's Shop. 4.) Get the fish. (See Fishing) 5.) Trade the Fat Greedie to the Galka in step 3. 6.) Talk to Oswald back in the "Shepard's Muster" to recieve an Amber Earring.
Fishing:(This is from MY point of view, and how I did the quest.)
Took me about 10 minutes to get a Fat Greedie. I also got 1 Greedie, 2 Cobalt Jellyfish, and 1 Quus, which I sold to the guild. I hope this helps you guys out.
Actually, after catching the Fat Greedie you speak to the Galka in the back room of the Fishing Guild. He'll cut it open for you then you get Key Item: Etched Ring. (I just did this quest yesterday, but I don't remember the Galka's name) Then, you speak to Oswald and he gives you an amber earring in gratitude for finding his sweetheart's ring. ^^
...Course, you know how many greedies I wasted cause I didn't realize I had to trade the Galka a Rare/Ex one? ^^;;
I was actually level 4 fishing at the time (close to level 5 cause I levelled up not long after that), and I caught it with a Glass Fiber rod and Lugworms near the Subjobs Dude in Selbina =^.^=

does the rod really matter much? as long you use one for big fish i mean? i see everyone catchin it wit carbon rods, could i use the clothespole and still get it?
Fat greedie is a LARGE fish? No wonder i've had like 5 fast water fish rods broken I've been using small water fish. stupid elvaan tricked me ;.; *swtiches back to single hook rod*
I spent about half an hour fishing in selbina using the minnow lure and carbon rod. I caught 2 greedies and 4 fat greedies. I think minnow lure is the way to go.
Use lugworms as bait (sold by NPC in the area) and a rod designed for large fish (Mithran rod works REALLY well, but they're expensive).
I don't think there's a minimum skill level required, but having close to 10 seems to help. The closer my fishing skill got to 10 the more Greedies I caught. The bright side is that you get a lot of bites, so your fishing skill will raise faster than some other places.
Give the fish to someone around Selbina, he'll cute the fish open and pull the ring out so you can give it to Oswald. After you've done it once, these are worthless.
You can fish this fish right out from Selbina's waters (I think ONLY in Selbina can you get this fish). After, get this fish to Oswald in Selbina to get your ring.
