After trying Davoi, West Sarurb., Knightswell and catching nothing, finally tried S. Bastok Markets and got 12 fairly quickly with Mithran Rod and Sinking Minnow.

I skilled off these and the other catch, dark bass, at the first pond in davoi. Went from 26-29 rapidly using halcy rod and either minnow or sinking minnow (don't recall which). I'm sure I could've reached 31-33 easily as the bass cap at 33.
I was fishing in Zeruhn Mines (The bridge over the waterway leading to korroloka) I used a selection of rods but used one bait and I was catching these with ease at lvl 8 fishing. Rods used : Halcyon Rod, Mithran Fishing Pole and composite rod. Bait used: Sinking Minnow

Yeah, I was lv 10 fishing in West Ronfaure and I was catching these easily. Unfortunately, it seems like they're pretty worthless as far as cooking is concerned and they don't sell very well. At least, this is my experience on the Bismarck server.
they're selling for 1k each on Ifrit Server at the moment... Any1 who needs them, contact Esperanta(me). I'm in Port Sandy, but logged for the night.

Strange, being level 26 with multiple rods and lures (prefered frog lure tho) i am not able to catch these >.< I've been trying several location but time keeps running out with mithran, composite and halcyon rods
I don't understand it, because i wanted to skill on these to 31.
I got 27 last night on nebs, so now i realy need to Catch these. Just read here about the '8' on numeric pad while the rod is in 'neutral', I hope that helps me out
On Clan Wind Database, it sai you can catch these with sliced sardines outside of port wind, in a pond, in the west side of the noob lvl area. Well thats a lie all im catching are crab mobs and buckets. fyi, i was useing a comp. rod.
I did also, With composite and minnow. Skill was 10 I was on the ferry that runs through carpenter's Landing trying to fish up mobs for the garhada teak lumber. It was a very tough catch even with all the fishing gear + guild support.
the LVL cap is 31 (which means you wont get skill points once you reach lvl 31 skill) This doesnt mean you cant catch on with a 0 skill lvl I have caught them throught my lvling from 0 through 10 it doesnt matter especially now with the new fishing I have caught things that peeps around me stop what there doing to ask me what lvl I am and when I tell them the get quite. You can catch anything now as long as you have right equip. For example if you are good enough even when its hard to bring it in all you have to do is watch closely to character and always use number pad (PC) every time it pulls mid hold 8 and the fish wont regan strength then you struggle again when you feel you cant keep up press 8 it will hold and fish wont regan strength
I started to catch and raise my skills on those at level 20 with Mithran rod Frog lure eastern (tiny) Pond of la theine plateau Friend level 18 fishing gets them too with the same equipment. I sold them to the merchant for about 200 gils. I have no clue what the measurement is about.
Anyone know what these oddball measurements are all about? Do you need to have a certain sized catfish for a certain quest?

"Big" fish and "small" fish differ. If its a big fish it doesn't stack and it gives you a size/weight measurement. If it's a small fish, its normally stackable and doesn't give a measurement. If you go to the fishing guild in Selbina you can see which fish they are asking for on the Fish Ranking and find that fish. If you get in the top 20 they give you a ring that boosts the rate at which skill ups are gained! You also don't have to catch the fish yourself. Hope it helps. :)
I was wondering the same thing. I caught one in NW Pashhow Marshlands. In the area where the signature on a crafted item would go it says: <90[lm]/463[Pz]>
Think its just something you can claim status on. Found one JP page that looks like a "biggest fish" listing, where people would have the measurements posted.
Im catching a lot ot those catfishes in bastok markets, with my fishing skill 10, mithran fishing rod and some deep fish lure. My biggest so far is: <102(Im) 502(Pz>
this was the 2nd fish i caught at knightswell in west ronfaure. i have 0 fishingskill. i was using a mithra pole and a sinking minnow bait. took about 20 casts though.

This is the first fish I ever caught, so yeah you can catch it with no fishing experience. I was using Worm Lure, and Clothpole, or whatever it's called, hope this helps.
I could say the same thing to you, he was saying the cap was lvl 31, not that you start fishing them at lvl 31. So... dont say things if you don't know what your talking about.
hey i've been reading up a lot of things about fishin and it sez i can catch a giant catfish in a river in west Sarutabaruta not east but west... i seee the ocean but WHERE's the river?... please someone help me and give me the pos of the river

I'm wondering the same thing... maybe it indicates the length and weight of the fish? It makes me wonder if you can mount them on your mog house wall or something ^^
Also, giant catfish is considered a large fish - maybe all large fish have this designation?
I've caught a few at Port San using a Composite and Frog lure starting at skill 17 no fishing clothes. You can skill up to 31 using this fish with no rod breaks.
ok, from my experience in fishing in general, you have a chance of catching any fish at any level, but you will not necisarily skill up on it. i think how it works is that if you are trying to catch a giant catfish, and want to skill up on it, you have to be within 10 levels of the cap. so you can catch them and skill up on them from lvl 21 fishing and onwards. just the way it seems to be working in my experience...
im lv 20 fishing and i have the 4 articles of clothing to help wityh skill ai was catching them in la thein plateau when i was fishing lv 15 with a composite rod and frog lure. they dont stack >< but they do sell for some good gil if your inventory is not full of other junk you were collecting you could make alot of gill with about 10-15 of these.
