just got it :D

I was camping Dune boots with my HNM ls and the PHs are spelunking sabotenders, so, naturally we killed them and just about everyone got a star necklace, except the people that didn't want it/need it.

This is a really good item for 59-65 until you get the wind and string skill + torques. Even if you don't get the overpriced Wind Torque it's really good till 75. :)

Hmmm whats better for a BRD/WHM

This or Toruqe +1? Im leaning twoards this.... but Im not sure.

The preferred neckpieces for a brd at higher levels are the Wind and String torques, but this item is probably up there with them as well.
gonna start it

I would go with the Star Necklace for the BRD/WHM combo. +1 more CHR than a Torque +1, and because even TaruBRD/WHM have little natural MP to begin with, the added INT and MND would do no good if you don't have enough MP to even cast the spells. This comming from a lvl 58 Taru BRD/WHM who believes in CHR armor more than MP armor, thus having only 154 natural MP and 160 MP with an Elegant Shield o.0

Got this last night, after trying for almost three weeks to find someone high level to help me kill Sabotenders I got sick of waiting and grabbed a random friend to help me through the doors. I charmed and 2 houred a VT Girtab and sent it after Sabotenders against whom it did amazingly well. Got my Star Spinel on the second Sabotender.

For those that don't know, the cactuars that drop the item needed for this necklace has an attack called 1000 needles. This attack is divided up by the amount of players you have fighting it, including pets. So if you have 6 players with 4 types(smn, drg, bst) of pets, each individual will only take 100 DMG. I've had 3 people in my LS under the impression that this attack will hit everyone for 1000 DMG each; not true guys, you know who you are.

Yes. 1,000 Needles is used by all cactaur monsters.
NM Cactaurs use 10,000 Needles, which is probably what
your LS was thinking when they said everybody takes 1,000
damage. Cactrot Rapido and Sabotender Bailerina are a
few who use this 10,000 Needles ability. I was told
there is a HNM that uses 100,000 Needles, but I don't
believe there is one. I could be wrong though.

Anybody with Stoneskin spell will want it up at most times.
The 1,000 needles ignores defense entirely, and it only takes
3 needles to wipe out shadows, so Blink spells won't work.
Stoneskin is pretty much required if you are soloing this.

for those who don't know, ALL the cactuar type mobs use 1000 needles. it is a guaranteed 1000 damage altogether. so if you plan on soloing cactuars i hope you have atleast 1200+ hp :)
How?

Anyone know if there's any other way to get the Star Spinel than from the Spelunking Sabotenders in Quicksand Caves? I looked on the AH, but it wasn't there. Is it Rare/Ex?

It is indeed. The ONLY way is to get it from the Sabotenders. PLD testimony also drops from the anticans around the 'tenders, so you might be able to get your PLD friend to help because of that, and many mages want this necklace, not just BRD and BST. It's easy to organize a strong party around 60 to camp these.
