I just ran through Inner Horutoto Ruins killing Goblins left and right and not a single one dropped this item. Just 2 scrolls of Barsleep, a scroll of Protectra, and a Horutoto Chest Key... Oh, and several Wild Onions.. >.>;

Man these things are annoying, i either fail or get Hqs. Out of 8 tried de-synths at level 23 clothcraft, waterday, facing north-west, i failed 6/8, HQed twice getting 4 each time. I suggest a better way of trying to get cotton other than this.
The last time even with advanced synth help on i still failed :(
Just wanted to come here and say that I had desynthed using the lightening crystal and Goblin Armour where my clothcraft is at level 8. On two occasions since being level 8 I have received skill ups, 2 x 0.2's. So I am presuming the cap is higher than that stated of 8?
I also mainly seem to get 4 or more Cotton Threads especially when I craft on Iceday or Lightnings day.
I'm sorry, but I had to rate down your post stouter. You're completely and utterly wrong. You WILL get a skill-up on De-synth. I've been desynthing Flax Flowers x2 and I've been getting great skill ups. Desynth uses Thunder Crystals only. The only reason you might not be getting skill ups for the item is because it's just not a good item to get skill ups on.

The Flax Flower x2 recipe is a Synthesis. You may note that Lightning icon Furnishings can give you either a Desynthesis Moghancement or a Lightning Moghancement: they are not the same thing, and it follows that there are recipes for each category: Desynthesis, and standard Lightning Crystal Synthesis.
my clothcraft now is lvl 4. i go get the advanced synth, and i keep getting HQ synth, ie. to say, 4 to 8 cotton threads. it is a water day and moon at 33%.
but the problem is, i get no skill ups. is it really cap at 8, or i should get a normal synth support? then it will even out and i get skill ups??

This is not a synth recipe, but a desynth. You will not get a skill raise on desynth, there is a much higher rate of failure and HQ at any level. They way to tell the difference when using a recipe is: Synth: <me> synthesized ____ Desynth: <me> obtained ____
I have a clothcraft skill of 7 and have tried to synthasize cotton thread using goblin armor and a lightning crystal 9 times now and have lost 6 suits of goblin armor along with several crystals and my skill hasn't raised any. I tried it on lightning day when the moon was at 88% Waxing. Isn't that supposed to be the best time to do it? I could make capes which are listed as a skill of 7 when I had a skill of 5, but lossing all these goblin armors at 500 gil a pop is killing me.... Are the skill levels listed here wrong or am I missing something here?
You're never guaranteed HQ synthesis. I sometimes get normal results at 56, and other times I get a lot. It's partially based on skill level, moon phase, day of the week, synthesis imagery (and its strength), and then luck.
try using fire gobs always drop fire so it would make sense that fire or earth would split the item into its component parts, earth=decay and all try it and see

When i was level 14: Goblin Armor (NOT MAIL!) +1 Lightning Crystal = 6 cotton thread with a +1 effect.
Also when i was level 14:
Goblin Armor + 1 Lightning Crystal = 8 Cotton thread with a +1 effect.
Level 15: Goblin Armor + 1 Lightning Crystal =
2 Cotton Thread
Level 16: Goblin Armor + 1 Lightning Crystal =
Large Purple explosion with lots of crystal shards all over everything and no thread.
This makes NO sense to me whatsoever, so if anyone can help explain it, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Wind and Lightning Work on most goblin drops
I am currently Leathercraft 0,
Lightning + gob armour = fail, lots of times ^^
wind + gob armour = unable to synth due to low level
please be aware that this is different from goblin mail !
