In my experience it does not PREVENT sleep but merely reduces the time you are suffering from the status ailment.
Sleep is a black/red/drk spell.

What determines if barsleep or barsleepra will acctually prevent you being slept? Its a resistance to black magic roll or? I'm posting this here because I was looking at the sleep spell to see what kind of spell it was. (Red or Blm)

There are only int based spells, and mnd based spells. Making them in either the white or black magic schools, there is no red magic per se. But to answer your question, your current mnd level would determine whether or not you evade or resist. Mostly what these spells do is lower the time spent impaired by the status effect. Meaning a 20 second sleep will only last 15 seconds, maybe less.
