Got 2 spawns in a row, once for my 69PLD friend and once for me (75RDM). We had a WHM with us too for extra healing. Very, very easy fight if you take it to the zone and nuke it down (or if you have extra BLM or RDM just blast it to hell where it stands). I can confirm it does sometimes take longer than 4 hours to respawn, took about 4hr20min for us.

Just wanted to add a few notes about doing this.

Last night a Paladin friend asked me to help him out with this. It was my first time doing this nm. They had already popped nm and lost evidently. I flew in from jeuno to help. Only 6 members and several of those in the mid 50's range. Party was Pld lvl 70, War 67, myself RDM 63, another RDM 60-61 not quite sure didnt ask but that is about what hp and mp would indicate a low 50's MNK and a mid 50's SMN/WHM. We went down, nm still there. Cleared the hallway of bat and slimes. rested up. Pulled NM into the now cleared hallway. I was primarily hasting and refreshing while other rdm nuked. space was tight. tried to stand back but got hit with aoe a few times. had ss up for the most part so it didnt get me but particularly the SMN and MNK really took damage. I healled them up, havent converted yet. Bat respawns, i sleep it, fight seems to be taking forever. MNK wakes bat up, it comes after me, I sleep it he wakes it up. Finally he disengaged. I cast ss and convert. heal up. slime in hallway respawns and now i really have my hands full. someone runs toward the room where the nm had been and a haunt aggroes. battle over more or less.

Round 2. We know that the primary problem was DD. The SMN is feeling like it was her fault quits. It wasnt. The MNK also drops. We pick up a 75 lvl BLM and a 60 lvl DRK. Feeling confitant we head back. Get down there and clear the bat. Slime seems far enough away that we dont worry with it. Mistake. We pull the nm. This fight seems to be going much better until one of the haunts aggroes from the nm room. Sleep seems to fail. BLM puts such a hurting on NM that it aggroes him and PLD has a heck of a time getting it off. I can see fight is going bad now, but I dont escape because it seems we are so close on killing nm. Next that slime from the hallway decides this is the time to aggro. Bad. I go down and rest of party isnt far behind.

Round 3: Feeling much wiser this time we come up with the strategy to beat this thing. I would highly reccomend it. Here is what we did and it worked to perfection. First we cleared hallway space of bat and slimes. Easy enough. Then we pulled the haunts out of the large room where nm is one by one and kill them. Take a short 2-3 minute rest for mp. Paladin runs into room and provokes NM. Us mages rush in to other side of the room and stand on a ledge while mellee engages NM slime on other side of the room. After that it was a pretty routine kill. BLM did pull hate a couple of times but other that that it was not too bad. We killed NM with about 1 and a half minutes to spare for haunt pop by my watch. None of the mages took any aoe damage. I was relaxed enough that my refreshes and hastes were on time and healing wasnt all that heavy. I did convert but still had about 170 mp when it went down. PLD quickly lotted and BLM escaped us, much to our relief.

Wow all you guys sound like you had a hard time...
Me (lvl 62 Pld) and my two brothers Enjou (lvl 75 Rdm/Blm) and Raiu (lvl 73 War/Nin) Found it and killed it in like 5 minutes with no trouble or deaths. They just had me sub WHM so I could toss in a good heal or two. And I looked great wearing my Jelly Ring at lvl 63.

Got my ring tonight!

So tonight I got my jelly ring! I just thought I'd come tell you guys, it was easier than it sounded when I read up on it!

Thank you to Kerianne 74 rdm, Ryanana 63 rdm, Clutgh 64 whm, and Asialle my trusty 64 Dragoon! (hahahahha). I'm 63 pld, almost 64.

So we went in there and it was fairly easy to get to the camp. I couldn't realy see the floor due to the darkness of teh screen so I followed Asialle but we all made it there just fine. We camped in the corner at H-11 as the walkthrough I read suggested. It was a fabulous camp. We didn't get aggro from any haunts. We killed a few bats and the two Mousses that spawn near the camp.

Asialle saw the Sewer Syrup from our camp, and Kerianne pulled it.

The Syrup took about 8 years to chew through Kerianne's blink, stoneskin and phallanx. By the time Kerianne's mp ran out, the syrup was 1/2 dead. I did everything I could to get hate back while Kerianne and Ryanana converted, and then they went at it again and flattened him good.

There was no time when I was afraid for our lives, except maybe during the converts I worried a bit. We didn't take any really big damage. It took some cure iii and iv's but it wasn't as frightening as I imagined. When the syrup died all the mages were out of MP again. Right on time! So I lotted on my ring, and we all escaped out of there!

I estimate the killing of the syrup to have taken about.. 6 minutes (I didn't time it) and the syrup popped after we had killed 5 Mousses. The whole thing took about an hour from the time we set up camp.

Fun fun fun and now I have a jelly ring! yay!!

64RDM (me), 71PLD, 70THF, 70*RNG, 63RNG, 62*RDM, 62*DRK, 58*SAM, 58*DRK.

We killed the 3 closest Mousse 3 times. On the start of the 4th cycle, we'd almost decided to hang it up due to the difficulty our group was having killing the Mousse. Well, needless to say, it popped. We took it on, and took it out!! The 70THF was the last one standing. He pulled the Haunts that had popped about to the exit to W. Ron, but died anyhow. I HP'd to N. Sandy, ran in, passed on the ring, and everyone but the PLD HP'd. It dropped to the PLD just before I chainspell / raise / escaped the 2 of us.

So, PLD took home the ring, rest of us took home a bit of xp debt, and a great deal of pride!

Thanks to: Dammenion, Phobia, Tauri, Elnene, Karinya, Josy, Hetaut, and Kishimo. Good times!!

About this Guide

I had planned on picking up the Jelly Ring since level 50 or so, but when it came time to begin the actual preparations, I found that some important pieces of information were either missing or scattered among several different posts. Since I just obtained the Jelly Ring, I decided to write a complete walkthrough that will hopefully tell you everything you need to know in order to get one for yourself.

I. Why Get a Jelly Ring?
==================
Jelly Ring {link}
Level 63 (Physical Damage Taken -5%, Magic Damage Taken +5%)
Chances are by the time you hit level 63 and are able to equip the Jelly Ring you will have been wearing +Vit rings for quite some time. From level 14 on the ring slot is the bread and butter +Vit slot for Paladins, which is important considering Vit is the primary Paladin stat for the majority of the game. There have been several posts on the Paladin forums from those who wonder if it is actually worth it to remove a +Vit ring and replace it with the Jelly Ring. However, the whole reason Paladins focus on Vit in the first place is because doing so reduces how much damage we recieve, and post-60 the Jelly Ring will more directly reduce damage recieved than Vit rings in the same way that a +Accuracy ring will more directly improve your accuracy than a +Dex ring, or just as a +Evasion earring will more directly increase your evasion than a +Agi earring.

The reason for this is that the mobs you fight in exp parties from the early 60s onward will hit harder than most mobs you have fought previously, and for harder hitting mobs -5% Physical Damage will do more to reduce damage received than +4 or even +5 Vit (the most you can get out of the ring slot). To use the example of getting hit for 100 by an Incredibly Tough mob, a Jelly Ring will reduce that damage to 95, while a +3 or +4 Vit ring will only bring that damage down to around 98 or 97, if that. So the Jelly Ring will shave a few points off every standard mob attack, and though this doesn't seem like much it will definately add up.

However, where the Jelly Ring really shines is on mob critical hits and specials. Post-60 it is not uncommon for mob crits and specials to hit for 200-300+, which means the Jelly Ring will save you 10-15 points of damage on each non-regular attack. Again, this is not a huge difference, but over the course of an entire exp session it could end up saving you thousands of points of damage and the healer thousands of MP.

==================
II. Jelly Ring Walkthrough
==================
Getting the Jelly Ring can seem intimidating since it requires you to recruit help, travel to a dangerous area, spawn a notorious monster, and defeat it, but it is very doable, even for mid level Paladins provided you have the right kind of help. Just like the Paladin AF quests, it is a definate challenge, but it is also definately worth the effort.

a. Getting to the Spawn Point for the Sewer Syrup

Your ultimate goal is to reach the small room located at I-11 in Bostaunieux Oubliette, the dungeon/sewer located beneath Chateau d'Oraguille in San d'Oria.

First you will need to enter Chateau d'Oraguille by crossing the Drawbridge located at I/J-6/7 in Northern San d'Oria.

Once inside the Chateau pass through the doorway on the right guarded by Ferdechiond and take a left towards Alado at the far end of the hall. Proceed down the spiral staircase and zone into Bostaunieux Oubliette.

Once inside the dungeon head straight and take the first passage on your right. Halfway down the hall you will see Novalmauge who you will remember from the Scroll of Drain Quest. Continue to the end of the hall and through the Wooden Door that will lead you down another flight of stairs. Here you will see a Sewer Lid. Take note of its shape and color because there are dozens of trap doors located throughout the sewer below, and you will want to avoid falling through them. Speak to Couchatorage to enter the sewer. It is a good idea to apply Sneak before dropping through the sewer lid since the Dark Aspics directly below detect by sound. Do not bother with Invisible, you cannot enter the sewer if the spell is active.

When you drop down the sewer you land in the little room at I-6 on the following map:

http://www.speakeasy.org/~sticks/ffxi/named/img/ff11/drinnen/Bostaunieux_Oubliette_02.gif

You can see the little room at I-11 where the Sewer Syrup spawns. To reach it head south until you reach a deadend, then turn right/west at the wall and take your first left heading south. Take a quick left heading east, then follow this passage until it turns south. Take your first right heading west. Note the trap door that lies just ahead if you continue south, as well as those in the little room at I-8. Navigate your way accross the little bridge in the room while avoiding the trap doors and make a left heading south. Continue south until you reach a large room with a hole in the floor with several water passages branching out. Take the passage heading south and continue until it turns left/east and ends in the little room at I-11. If you made it this far congratulate yourself and take note of the two Haunts in the room at I-11 which you will want to avoid. The Sewer Syrup spawns directly in the center of this room.

b. Spawning the Sewer Syrup

The Sewer Syrup is a lottery pop of three Mouse located near the room at I-11. Chances are you passed two of these Mouse in the hallway leading to the little room with the two Haunts. The third Mouse is located a short distance from this hallway, but you will most likely be better off leaving it alone.

In case you don't have much experience with Notorious Monsters, since Mouse are the placeholders you will need to kill the two Mouse located in the hallway at H-10 and H-11 several times, and there is a small random chance that when it comes time for a Mouse to respawn in the hallway the Notorious Monster Sewer Syrup will spawn in the center of the little room at I-11 instead.

The best campsite is probably the corner at H-11 just outside the little room with the two Haunts. From here you will be able to see whenever the Mouse in the hallway respawn, and you will also be able to see far enough into the room at I-11 to tell if the Sewer Syrup popped instead. While you will likely be out of the aggro range of the two Haunts, there are several Werebats in the hallway with the Mouse that will con Easy Prey to a level 70+ and aggro a level 75 when resting.

The best strategy is to pull the Mouse into this corner at H-11 and kill them here while checking for the Sewer Syrup spawn and being careful not to aggro the Werebats or Haunts.

I have heard the average spawn time for the Sewer Syrup is 1.5 hours, but I have also heard horror stories of 3.5 hour camps with no pop. When I went the Sewer Syrup popped after we had only killed 3 Mouse, so there is a great deal of luck involved.

c. Fighting the Sewer Syrup

When you spawn the Sewer Syrup pull it to the same corner where you killed the placeholders. It may be necessary to wait a few minutes in order to allow it to move far enough away from the Haunts in the room so that they don't aggro the puller.

The Sewer Syrup is Slime type mob which means melee attacks will do very little damage. You are looking at a nearly impossible fight if you do not bring relatively high level Blm or Rdm along. This Notorious Monster is Water based and weak to Fire, so have your mages nuke accordingly and be sure to let your Rdm know Enfire will result in a shorter fight. It does have a fairly damaging AOE attack and uses Fluid Toss, both of which are TP based. This is another reason why too many melee and not enough mages can make this fight far more difficult than it has to be.

The Jelly Ring is a 100% (guaranteed) drop. The exact level of the Sewer Syrup is unknown, I would estime 70ish, possibly lower.

The first time I went in as a 62Pld/31War with a Taru level 75Rdm/37Blm (thanks Cueball). I tried to fight the Sewer Syrup as if it was a regular exp mob, which was a big mistake. I would tank and Cueball would Refresh, cure, and nuke when possible. After about 5 minutes the Sewer Syrup had 4/5 of its health left since the only respectable damage that had been done was two Fire IIIs for 500+ each. The problem was that I was sucking up too much of the Redmages MP, which we really needed for damage. Things were not going too terribly though until a Werebat aggrod us, which resulted in a full wipe. Cueball had a great attitude though, even though he had to Homepoint and probably lost 4000+ experience points.

We regrouped in Jeuno and recruited another Taru, this time a 74Rdm/36Whm (thanks Unknow). We made it back to I-11 and to our relief the Sewer Syrup was still sitting there, so don't get too discouraged if you lose the first battle. As long as you regroup fairly quickly you should have time to give it another shot. This time Unknow and Cueball decided to tank by alternating Blink and Stoneskin and trade hate by nuking. I sat there whacking away for about 15 points of damage a hit, though I did get off a 600 damage Spirits Within and managed to cast Holy twice for 192 damage each despite my smallish Elvaan MP.

This second fight took much less time, Cueball and Unknow didn't even hit yellow. It was quite impressive actually, they were both nuking away while I waited patiently for them to need a Cure II or III, but the Sewer Syrup kept either hitting shadows or for 0 damage. In the end they dropped the this Notorious Monster before they even needed to Convert.

Basically, as a Paladin be prepared to take a backseat on this fight unless you have several people helping you out or a dedicated non-nuking healer. Chances are your party member's MP would be better spent casting offensive spells than healing you. I have heard of both level 75 Ninjas and Redmages soloing this Notorious Monster, but you might as well bring along one or two more people just to make sure.

As soon as the Sewer Syrup dies lot your Jelly Ring, prepare for Escape, and be glad you will most likely never see this zone again, unless of course you decide to help someone else get this ring.

Goodluck.

Our LS tackled this for one of our high level Plds. Our alliance was levels 54-73 (Thf, Pldx2, Whmx2, Drkx3, Rdmx4, Blmx1, Samx1, Drgx1, Rngx1) and we owned him. We only had one Blm, but a number of level 3 SCs.

Getting to Sewer Syrup was a challenge. We fell down once and even with a few links, were able to handle any mob in the Sewer.

I never thought I'd find a zone I disliked more than Toriamal Canal, but I did.

Got this with a 63 pld (me), 60 rdm, 63, rdm, 63 whm, 63 blm, after 2 hrs camping the wrong spot, and 1 hr camping the other spots.

Never any danger, (except when maybe the rdm pulled 1231121 bats/haunts when we were bored waiting for spawn)

Thank you Barfo, Your strat worked for us, and He didn't even do any AOE's

Just got this ring after hour and a half of camping. 73PLD, 73WHM, 66 and 73 BLM, 69 RNG and BRD. Was fighting mousse when it poped. BLM thought he could sleep and cast it before I could tell him no. Jumped on NM quickly going through my usual tanking except and let RNG take care of mousse (RNG do make damage on jelly for those who wish to argue that's bad idea) asked blms to nuke it lightly until half way down. Did keep NM on me pertty good with normal nuking from Blms. When HP was half way down told blms to nuke with all they have. (note* PLD 2 hour does not hold hate over BLM's best nuke so don't even think you could hold it for 30 sec with PLD 2 hour.) took 15 sec to take rest of HP and get my ring =D Thanks to all the good people who joined me and helped if you read this -Gilgamesh-

EPIC BATTLE
# Nov 22 2004 at 4:55 AM Rating: Decent
All right! Well, it started out with me and a couple friends just hanging outside of Kuftal when we decided to go get me a Jelly ring.

The party setup was:

75WHM, 75PLD/NIN, and me a 70PLD

It took about an hour for the little guy to spawn. Just killing the other bastards in the room... anyway, we bring it over to the corner of the room.
Everything is going ok, PLD/NIN tanking just fine, not getting hit when both of the Haunts spawn... they aggro us and all hell breaks loose. PLD/NIN can't keep Utsusemi up so he starts getting rocked... at this time Sewer Syrup was around 40% HP, soon the WHM gets hate from both the Haunts, I try to flash the Syrup and get hate from the Haunts but also keep Spiriting the Syrup at the same time, it was going back and forth, we all were in orange HP. WHM sleeps the mobs and get some MP to nail some cures, Haunts wake up, WHM casts Benediction, one starts raping her the other decides to cast Quake, and my shield bash is already used because one started casting Flood earlier, and I only have around 70% TP... BAM, WHM down. Just me and the PLD/NIN, things are getting pretty rough, Syrup is at 10%, the PLD/NIN gets off a Spirits before he eats it, we both had 0 MP left, Syrup is around 1% HP and I have 170 HP with 3 mobs attacking me, I go to Spirits and hit wrong macro, I do 46 damage with a Swift Blade, luckily I manage to just get 100% to do a Spirits and murder the thing... WHM disbands, PLD/NIN home points to Jeuno, I hit a lot on the Ring and BAM, Haunts kill me... it was so epic, and I got the ring. What a battle, thought I should share that :P

Things to note: Don't let the Haunts aggro you, things were way too easy without them there.

Hehe, yeah it takes forever to spawn. Pops on first map at I-11. Went there with a rdm, brd, 2drks, whm, blm, and a thf I think. By the time it popped I think we were down to whm, brd, rdm, drk, blm, thf and me. It takes forever for it to pop, and spawn time and the two bogys and the single jelly that pop in that room is long. Finally It popped and took out the blm twice with its AoE I think. Didn't seem to do to much damage, then again I waited forever to get the ring in the first place.

I took this guy out easily with a party of:

66PLD (me), 66RDM, 66BRD, 63BLM, 61RDM, 60WHM.

Basically i tanked him using an earth staff but without engaging him. Also had soul voiced minne (+def) and ballad songs up, we gave double ballads to the mages (+9 MP/tick counting refresh) so they had plenty of stuff. He was doing maybe 30-75 damage per hit to me, fluid toss did about 200 or something. all the mages just slowly threw low fire spells, and i mostly managed to keep the hate, though my WHM was healing me so fast it was hard to get self-heals off based on how little actual damage i was taking. Also a bunch of people (BRD, RDM, me) with 1HS skills saved up to 300% TP on the other mobs and unloaded a spirits on him right at the start before disengaging. The whoel fight lasted about 2-3 minutes and he only used TP skills twice, and neither was the AE (used the Toss once and the Drain one once) one so maybe we were lucky there. That shows to me quite clearly that not engaging him is a very good strategy for avoiding the deadly skills, one of the placeholder slimes (that we were all 6 of us hitting for weaponskillups) usually would use skills at least 2-4 times in the 1 minute fights we had for those. It goes without saying that you pull him to the corridor with the bats and fight him out of range of the HP aggro from the ghost mobs in the room where he pops.

Just camped it tonight; not that difficult with a full party of ~60s. The -5% is definitely better than a VIT ring; but coupled with a VIT+3 or VIT+4 ring it's awesome.

Hey Poo.

Did you ever consider that zoning in and out was possibly part of the Bst's plan on killing this mob? I'm sure he felt like you stole his NM. A lot of Bst's make a solo attempt at this, and until the Bst is dead I would leave his NM alone. Making enemy's with a lvl 74 Bst is usually not a good idea.

The NM is easy if you have a 75 RDM. :P

My 75 RDM friend pretty much soloed it while I half-heartedly attacked it (she kept aggro through whole fight) and my 66 BLM friend nuked occasionally.

I camped Sewer Syrup and got this ring..... I have personally tried it out...and my results were that...the -5% psych. dmg tkn is big enough to be worthwhile over using 2 chrysoberl ring which i see alot of PLD's do... I get hit for like 56 hp less per hit (80% of the time) and the rest is about the same... HOWEVER the =%5 mgc dmg tkn.. is reason enough to have a backup ring of your choice for those heavy casting fiends and NM's and such...... thx for reading
