This staff is wonderful for HNM / Dynamis tanking. Ok, let's say you're tanking a god. You get hit for 500 normally. Now equip an earth staff. Now you're getting hit for around 400 normally. Throw in a Jelly Ring and that brings your damage down to 375ish. That's minus 125 damage each hit. That's quite a bit to save your MP and your life. Mainly used for HNM / Dynamis, but it can be used for tanking hard hitting mobs.

-In exp
-Great for taking less damage
-You lose some enmity from sword/shield
-Must have capped Staff to use
-63+ You have access to Spirit Taker

Personally, I prefer using Joyeuse/Koenig Shield for a lot of hate compared to EStaff or Kinkobo. That's just my opinion on it. Hope it helps.

Earth Staff vs gluttony
# Oct 23 2005 at 10:24 PM Rating: Decent
Me personally as a pld 73 with maxxed staff, staff is much nicer in exp parties. I take low damage and have spirit taker which I can usually get about 150 mp(In exp parties). Mind i dont have maxxed shield skill so i cant judge 100% fairly, but i can say that earth staff is VERY nice in parties.

ok i may start usin this staff for all melee based mobs really, i was tankin spiders in boyahda tree and they were doin like 80 dmg often with sword n shield [yes i have pretty much top end gear and was using food only thing im missin at the mo is merc earring] and sickle slash was doin over 300 often. anyway so i equiped earth staff and suddenly it wasnt hittin for anymore than 60 dmg on normal attacks and sickle slash was doin under 200 a fair bit, even went down to 96 once! so yeah for mellee mobs earth staff way to go, magic mobs sword n shield.

hmm after a bit of experimentation i found the dmg reduction in a regular xp party wasnt worth the amount of hate i lose while using this staff i will stick to regular sword/shielf for xp in future - im learning allot in the 50s lol

I should hope a 56 PLD doesn't attempt to use Shield Bash to stun mobs. Shield Bash was made for accruing hate, not for stunning mobs. As a tip... take everything you learned in the Dunes, and throw it out the window. The rest of the world works much differently.

Okay Heres my input i see a whole bunch of higher lvl PLD's use this for gods and Aura Statues that hit for alot. I also just bought this for SMN for the Minus perpetuation and for when i play WHM and *sometimes* get hate i quickly switch it in But back to the point hate is also effected by the ability to take less hate (Proven check ffxi-garuda.com)but sword generates a bit more Im SMN so IMHO thats my 2cents

Tarutaru pld with this? {Yes, Please.} Great for some, just not needed for others, like those damn galka's... ^^ but it works great, I've partied with awesome tanks, alot from my LS when doing missions or just out doing whatever. I as a blm, when I try to farm, I use this (or wind staff for the evasion), since my defense is absolutely horrible, it helps me take some abuse from mobs I fight, just gotta get it skilled up. =\

Keeping hate
# Jan 29 2005 at 1:20 PM Rating: Decent
You all say how the pld needs the shield to keep hate and that is just not true. Yes he gets hit more but that only means more healing. When you heal yourself you more than make up for the loss of hate when you get hit. Also when you get hit you also get tp so its really not that big of a deal and you can generally get about 100% tp in an average fight. Maybe its just because im galka but I also switch weapons when resting to a dark staff. So I lose my TP anyway. As long as you keep the pld rythem of (flash provoke cure III) until you run out of mp then switch to flash Cure II alternating you will be more than fine.

PS. you say that the 20% isnt that big of a deal i consider 80 points out of every 100 a very big deal.

Hey, been reading the arguments going on in this forum, and i just want to put my 2 cents in.
right now, i'm L61 Paladin, and have both the Gluttony Sword and Earth Staff (yea, i know, expensive, right?). IMO, for normal xp parties, you should be using sword/shield. For mobs that hit significantly harder than normal, for instance Pugils, Perytons, Dhalmels, etc. i would go with the staff, but only if i'm comfortable with the hate control in the party.
a few really important factors:
1. Swords do much more damage than staves, especially if you don't have time to skillup staff before you go xp. an underleveled staff will almost never hit, and if you do, it will be for 0-5 damage a pop. for hate control, obviously that sucks.
2. The Earth Staff does significantly reduce damage taken from powerful mobs. Switching from sword/shield to staff on tougher Pugils and Perytons, my damage taken drops from 90-120 to 60-85. (yes, i know, the math isn't right, but you can see the difference)
3. a shield, for normal xp, is a much better idea. for one, the extra chance to avoid attacks in addition to parry/evade is very useful. also, shield bash is pretty important when **** hits the fan and Sentinel doesn't give you your hate back.

so yea, there's my argument. Good Luck

My friend uses earth staff against pugils, but he uses gluttony and a shield against most other mobs. Also, this staff is really good for kiting HNMs.

It's a nice staff for def, in the end... I suppose one could use it in exp if they really wanted too, but I prefer Sword and Shield for exp parties. I'm too attached to my shield to give it up.

However, as someone else said; this Staff would-be/is real great for HNM's and I've seen multiple PLD's using it during the evil fights from hell...

Final input? Seems like something a PLD would need, but you don't need to use it all the time.
My 2 cents.

Ok now something not about how great work this staff whit PLD:).
Im BLM and i was read about genkai 5. Someone say about "u need to get all staves to make BIG BOOM on Maat". hmmm i was not belive but ..."i go outside to check".
4 luck i got Dark, Ice and Earth Staff. i was checking many times and ... if u use Earth Staff and cast Earth spell this make 8% dmg more ... if u dont belive check self ... all time results r same.
Ps. i was comparing results to Ice Staff... 4 example i cast 3 x Stone /all time 53 dmg/on same mob using Ice Staff, and 3 x Stone using Earth Staff.../all time 58/ ... same mob/ Death Wasp/ same caster just other dmg ...
..

i was in a pt w/ pld using this and as blm w/ full af i never got hate on me and i didnt cast any less tan i usually would. pld did have haste on tho if that matters.
Earth Staff
# Oct 04 2004 at 6:40 PM Rating: Decent
ok...im not exactly a high lvl pld but...imo this staff doesnt seem to do much in an exp pt...sword will hit faster thus allowin for more hate and im pretty sure Spirits Within is used as a hate tool later on anyway. Sure the -20% dmg is nice but u will also miss out on shield blocks. From what ive read its awesome for HNM fights though since most pld stack on the VIt,-% dmg and hp. I plan to get this staff just not necessarily for exp use unless im about to die or something..
Noobs
# Sep 09 2004 at 9:45 AM Rating: Decent
Ok guys, I dont mean to be rude but you all are noobs :D. Earth Staff works preatty nicly as a PLD in EXP pt's. As you all may know PLD are the best with Staffs, and therefeore get Spirit Taker @ lv 63 (job lv). for all of those that are wondering what spitrit taker is, it preatty mutch converts DMG into MP. Spirit Taker is VERY effective in EEXP pt's b/c it preatty mutch dosnt make us Depend on RDM or BRD. I am currently lv 60, but when I hit 63 I will use Staff, /equip Sub "Ryl.Grd. Shield" | /wait 1| /ja "Shield Bash". that you can use to satrt battle and then make a macro to Equip Terra or Earht Staff, in my opinion if used in EXP a Terra would come handy b/c you are loosing quite the VIT from a Gluttony. anyways thats what I think and its correct, PLD should use Staff when they get Spirit Taker and rule even more :D Now witht the update ti will make us even better :D

omg...
It seems to me that a lot of people value their sword and shield too much. Yes, shield is nice, it occasionally blocks some hits, and therefore u happen to not lose hate that round. But the next round u will probably be hit, and lose some hate. Big deal, voke/cure III/flash/sentinel/shield bash to get way more hate back than what the enemy did.
Notice how only one of those options required a shield ^^
With the Earth staff yes, there is no chance to reduce the dmg taken with a shield. But, the dmg taken is (around my lvl) usually changed from 60-100 down to 40-60. I know this isnt 20%, and the reason why should be obvious... VIT+4=-(7-8) more dmg imo.
As for TP... yes, Spirits Within is nice, and I always miss it, but it just doesn't outweight the benefits of the staff imo. Earth Staff means the WHM doesn't have to cure as much, simple as that.
On a similar point... why do paladins 51+ always wear the Iron Musketeers Cuirass? Def:40 VIT+1
What about Gaia Doublet? DEF:35 VIT+4
VIT+3 > DEF:5 easily, def 5 does nothing, vit+3 noticably reduces dmg (of this i'm certain, i've changed equip during fight)

Anyway, that's my 2 cents (more like 5 bucks but what the hey, i had a lot to say =))
#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 01 2004 at 10:12 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I find it funny how you call people noobs.
RE: Noobs
# Sep 22 2004 at 10:44 AM Rating: Decent
Wouldn't equiping your shield remove your staff and therefor your TP? And if you say that pld doesn't need TP and hardly ever gets any like most people then why say use it for Spirit Taker? And you can't rely on such a slow weapon to get you enough TP to use any weapon skills anyways. If you say use Earth Staff in xp pt's it's solely for the damage reduction. But you should keep sword and shield for the mobs that don't hit you that hard.

I think it should be mentioned that all weapons are effectively equal in the TP gaining department, since the amount of TP gained per hit is directly proportional to the Delay of the weapon. Higher Delay = More TP per hit.

Hiya^^

This staff is most effective when used against HNM's (High/Hard Notorious Monsters) which are usually around level 80+. PLD's should never use a staff to exp IMO.

Not that shield bash is phenomenal, but it is good for a small dose of hate (especially with a Guardian's Ring). Further once your shield level is that high you will block (and parry) a good number of attacks which I have been told add some hate.

This staff, a Jelly Ring, a Defending Ring, and some HQ Defense food, plus as many other VIT boosters as you can get are ideal for moderate to quick hitting HNM's. CHR (and Emnity) boosters would be beneficial also as that greatly improves Provoke strength.

Hope this helps ya^^

~NIka.

btw, yes this is a very expensive setup, but it tuff for poor folks to battle HNM's.
Purpose...
# Jul 20 2006 at 5:23 AM Rating: Decent
Hate to tell you but CHR doesnt effect provoke and as for the people who say it does, why has Square stated many times that it doesnt.
Shield is overrated
# Aug 25 2004 at 8:57 PM Rating: Decent
I'd like to make a point here, how many times have you pld's out there been able to get shield bash to ACTUALLY work? Me, I've gotten it to work about MAYBE 10x's total in my whole pld carrier. I mean seriously, you can time it just right everytime, and you still get nothin'. Cause 9x's outta 10 it still doesn't stun the mob. The only thing I use shield bash for now is to gain a minor bit of hate. But every little bit helps. But, not saying I'd use the staff either. It would just be too weird not having a shield equipped, LOL. Plus, I love my Gluttony sword. It's just too cool.

Maybe if you're a PLD buy this and have a sword/shield ready. Use this staff normally, but have your macro for shield bash switch to sword/shield.

Also have a macro to switch to sword/shield, if a big elemental attack is comming.
