Goldsmithers can choose from a selection of colored rocks and on their top tier make really expensive gems. Bonecrafters only get Shall Shells. And if they aren't coming out pebbles NQ, they are coming out as Pearls HQ2. SE is just plain evil for putting our money maker gem on the first tier and crap on the second tier.
I have 12 stx of these and I love them to death I use them when im F***ing around. Throw one at a orc across the room and he brings his whole GANG to try and F*** you up! LMAO
RDM, PLD and SAM can't use pebbles... kinda weird, as it would implicate we are guilty of sins..
Okay, I guess I can imagine RDM being guilty of pimpness, but the Defender of Justice and the Epitome of Honour?

these are higher than lvl 18 crafting. i am lvl 18 Bonecraft now and am still getting skill ups. not sure on exact lvl only had a few Shall Shells to use but i am 18.4 on them.
This is one of the simplest crafts you can up your skill with....but its just not profitable. Especially when I've seen stacks of shells go for 10k. Maybe i should stick to bone masks.....but then where will the world get its supply of tiny round rocks? You can't just use any rock on the ground....no. You have to carve the rock out of an oyster...

My main character is a monk, and I decided to start leveling up throwing since it seems to be my only ranged option. As a war, I love to get a cheap shot in first instead of provoke -- which saves the provoke for later.
I bought a stack, used my lower level thief -- and threw them at rabbits. A stack of 12 killed maybe 2 rabbits, with a success rate of about 25 percent -- and raised my skill .2
Before spending money and time throwing hundreds of rocks at rabbits (like some 11 year old future psycho killer) -- is it even worth it for a higher level to throw these?
I guess there are some more powerful things to throw at higher levels, but I'm not there yet. Should I bother leveling this skill?
If you are totally serious about leveling up your throwing skill, buy a boomerang and just mow down some mobs with it as War/Thf/Rng @ lvl 14.
Personally, however, I wouldn't worry too much about your throwing skill, since you want to be a monk. Just wait it out until you get Chi Blast @ lvl 41. ^^
Pebbles are merely pebbles and it may make sense for every job to have the ability to throw them at a monster but it is strange that some jobs have been left out and other jobs were put in. Almost every job can use their hands and weapons to combat an enemy but some are more proficient than others. I think that strict melee main jobs should have the ability and others, like mages, should be removed. This is not to say that mages can not melee if they wanted to, but why place whm and blm there but not RDM, the true melee combat mage. It just doesn't make sense.

Maybe whm and blm have spare time on their hands in battle and wnat to throw things. just because a whm is in the party doesn't mean he/she has to heal all the time.

I don't stalk...I follow and observe...The way of the true Hunter.
For us poor monks with no range attack (well until Chi Blast, very high level) this is our only way to pull. If you can't see them, donate them to a monk friend. I'm happy to send a few crystals in exchange for 6 stacks of pebbles.
This is just not true, we have other ways to pull, and I shall prove it.
pulling with aggro is IMO the best way to pull sight aggro mobs, not sound aggro...heh example: pulling helm beetles in the nest, they link like all hell but if you can aggro pull, no link, and no link = no death (hopefully)
Ok... I'm sorry... but this crafting recipe is retarded... who in their right mind would use a shall shell which sells for 1k easy to make a SINGLE PEBBLE that sells for like... 10 gil... >_>
I can understand people who are mining being frustrated that they get pebbles and they don't seem to sell at AH, but i might suggest, offer them to a monk.
My boyfriend has been sending me the stacks he's accumulated when mining. Trust me, they are wonderful for pulling a monster for you. I hit 1/2 the time and even with no damage, it does pull. I can't thank him enough because at Windhurst they are 500gil a stack!!!

I am a level 40 White mage with level 50 throwing skill.
I do pretty decent damage, like 25-50 damage with each pebble on Orcs in Yughott Grotto.

I left FFXI. 300 days of playtime. Tired of it, partly. Sometimes all it takes is one person to ruin something for you. Basically, Hellich is a bastard. If you see him on Leviathan, stay away. If you MUST deal with him, then don't believe a word of the poison that spills from his mouth. It's all deceit.
As a monk, I wish there were other ammo I could use :(
Sorry for the newbie question, but I see on the recipe "Bonecraft (18)". Does it mean I have to reach level 18 in bone crafting, to be able to craft pebbles ?
Oh man, how long can it take to advance 18 levels in bone crafting ? Have any tricks to lvl up this ability ?
Please, if you see Juggleknot on your server, ask if they want to buy your Pebbles. They will pay 300/stack, unless someone else has the name Juggleknot or if i don't have enough gil. Offer only good until Easter.
They are going 200 a dozen at my AH in SD. At that price, I wish I could pick them up after the battle! I only bought and tried them because it's the only ranged weapon my black mage could use. First toss- 6 damage and my throwing skill went up .1!
also got one while mining, in the Grotto by Ghselba outpost(not sure on the spelling) they seem to be semi uncommon though, i have only gotten one so far
Its been awhile since I played beta, but if you have a theif with "Steal" ability you can get these easily off rock or stone eaters(forgot which one it is) I was able to get 30 without missing a single time.
After throwing 12 pebbles only 2 have actually hit something. at windurst they are 500 or so for 12. Which really suck since its the only ranged weap a monk can use. poor job choice IMO. And through harvesting with pickaxe ive only gotten one pebble after 5 axes (not what I wanted either)
There is a trick for monks, but it has nothing to do with the pebbles themselves...
The job ability "Boost" of monks is stackable and it affects the first attack whether it's melee, ranged,or chi blast. So stack up boost a few times, then throw that pebble. The more you boost, the more you'll notice the difference.

BTW, I wonder how much damage a monk can do to a monster, with a 30-40 throwing lvl ?

but they still get the monsters attention, and theres nothing quite like bonking the monster on the head with a rock.
the point of it isn't to do damage but to attack the monster without having to chase it down.
