I know this may seem like a dumb question, but what is a latent effect and what does it do? I have items with Latent Effect and i have no idea how it works. Please someone help the special taru that rides the short bus! ;-)

I got this in Jeuno when it was only 25K on Fenrir. I was recently looking at what other equipment to get and decided to check the price on it now, it's jumped up to 110K+ Methinks I'm gonna sell this bad boy right away. LOL. I'd rather go with +INT gear even though sometimes I spam nukes and end up in yellow HP *whistles innocently* But selling it for 4 times its original value can't be passed up, so I think I'm gonna do that.

Latent effect is triggered by yellow HP, and I assume TP under 100, but not certain on that.

In Xarcabard I played around with this, raised fire 1 dmg on a lost soul from 104 to 113. I then tried an Eye, raised fire 1 dmg from 77 to 83, and when i swapped it for my +3 INT ring, fire 1 did 78 dmg. So magic attack, especially 10 attack, is pretty nice when you consider all the total extra damage you'd do over a period of time. You would have to keep hp in yellow to use this in a pt, but at least then you'd have something to keep you on your toes. Not recommended if you're taking on mobs with AoE.

I tried on a ghost type also with high spells, did fire 3 a few times, was doing 469 dmg, then in yellow hp i was doing 506 dmg, a more significant amount. I think i'm going to attempt to use this in a pt just for kicks and the impressive MBs that will inevitably follow. It's all about the eliteness of being able to stay alive with yellow hp.... >:P

Had to share this. I bought this sucker about two months ago, when it first started showing up on the AH. only one in, nabbed it for 15k. really havent found a good way to put it to use with the latent affect, i hardly ever draw hate, and with auto-regen and my Static PLD and SMM/WHM, they wont let me stay in the yellow, just seemed like to much to get it to work.
so last night i check the AH, and the last one sold for,/gulp..150k gil. i immediatly put mine up for 200k, and it sells within the hour, and made a 1350% proffit! woot!!

OMG! I got this ring about a year ago for only 5k, sold it for like 2k since nobody wanted it. Why is this thing up to 200k now?? Its useless for blms since we rarely get into yellow and if we do go in yellow, why would you want to do more damage to get more hate? It would just mean the mob hates you more and your more likely to just get killed. I tested this thing out and sold it, especially when I was trying to tell other mages not ot heal me but nobody listened.

Not exactly.

"Latent Effect" means "triggered under certain circumstances." That's all.

The annoying thing is that these circumstances vary from item to item. In some cases the effect is triggered by equipping a specific sub-job. In others, it's by dropping below 50% health.

I don't know what triggers the effect on this ring... but I believe it's low health.

This pretty much sums it up...
Latent effect for THIS ring is when you're life is in the yellow and you don't have to sub whm for this...
At level 53 I was subbing SMN in Kuftal and my magic bursts on Thunder II Fragmentation SC were 388-399 without the ring. When my hp hit the yellow and a MB was about to come up i used my macro to switch from my INT ring to the Sorcerer's Ring and my MB dmg would hit 418-433. Whenever I get the chance i would just stay in the yellow...its very doable if you can control your hate and you have a great tank. I just let the whm know that if my HP drops below 250 for them to cure me. Other than that I would just sit at 395/526 HP and just watch my hate.

I find this ring nice for Solo Fighting TW/EP/DC prey, I end up getting in yellow HP and low MP so I aspir at that point and I hit a high of 80+ which is not my usual. then a Drain for 180+ hp. every otehr time its 30-50mp 70-120hp. just to my opiion I like this ring, and yea, I melee too. using Lilith Rod (MP Drain) and Moonlight lol, its nice not being routine. anyway theres my 2 gil what not.

If this is true ... then it would always work.

When, as a BLM, is you TP ever over 100? Never!

BLM's don't melee and rest often ... so TP is always around zero -- only goes up when hit by the mob. So if this is the requirements for the Latent effect to work ... than this rings kicks much ***** Coupled with an INT ring.

Lol. I melee all the time bro, for skillups. I've solo'd my staff to 200 soloing DC/EP mobs. Black Mages do melee, just not in parties. -_-

Thank you have a nice day~

If this works anything like my Medicine Ring, the latent effect kicks in when you hit yellow HP.

There's a problem though - if you're already at yellow HP the last thing you want to do is start nuking again and maybe drawing aggro.

It activates when you are in yellow HP AND less than 100% TP. Not OR. AND.

These level 50 LE rings are pretty useful. Bards commonly wear Minstril's Ring (Spellcasting Time -25%) and just keep their HP in yellow perminatly. Its sorta hard when you're subbing whm because it your Auto Regen keeps popping you back into white. L A M E. hehe.

But ya, just gotta put on a bunch of HP- Gear, then take it off. Maybe drink a poison potion or two. For Taru, Astral rings + Gold Hairpin, would probably do the trick.

Problem with Blms is we rest, and we have Auto-Regen on. You'd gotta get some aggro or something. hehe. I'd just have a macro that switches to this ring if I ever do happen to have yellow HP due to aggro, gob bomb, AOE etc.

How about instead of subbing WHM, sub RDM like i do with my BLM. You won't have to worry about the auto-regen from the WHM sub that way and you have a little more INT to play with(i'm not saying it's 10 more than subbing whm). Only downside to subbing RDM is no Divine Seal + (insert healing spell here). And BTW, this ring sells for 600-800k on Unicorn but i got mine soloing the BCNM.

I'm going to buy this ring if it's not too expensive and see if i get the dmg bonus when i wear it (rdm still 7, i'll level it soon once blm is 60). I SHOULD be able to see the difference as i did with my bastokan circlet. My Blizzaga in CN while in my late 30s were breaking 400dmg on mb compared to the normal 350ish i got when wearing the circlet (+3 MAB). Will have results tomorrow. ^_^

I am almost certain the trigger for this, and all the 50 job-specific latent rings, is :

-Under 100 tp
-Health in Yellow

Ive never seen a BLM use it in a pt.
dmg?

Does the "Magic attack bonus" only work on a MB, or in all magic attack spells? I asked this qustion on a post about the Moldavite earring, but it pertains to this Ring as well.
BLM/WHM?
# Aug 30 2004 at 3:44 AM Rating: Decent
I've been told by a Japanese BLM that this Latent Effect activates when you sub WHM.

I'm not sure. But "it activates when HP is yellow" isn't convincing... So.. I'll have to try it.

Difference in opinion
# Jun 30 2004 at 1:53 AM Rating: Decent
Some people bring "Latent Effect" equipment with them and change equipment in long battles if it's better than the normal equipment at yellow health. Some battles take quite a bit of time, and sometimes that Latent effect can make all the difference. Gobbiebags help, but it's really just up to the person to use them. One has to be very quick about switching equipment too.

Most people think it's not worth the hassle. For a BLM, magic attack bonus is awesome, but BLMs shouldn't be in yellow health >.<

Barely anyone walks around wearing these things...Jeuno AH on Leviathan, you can see where someone bought one, then 3 names down in the price history, sold it right back to someone else, who in turn sells it back. The only only thing I have heard about it is what was mentioned earlier, HP has to drop into the yellow for this to do you any good. I doubt anyone actually plans on fighting half dead to get the benefits.

Aye i saw this for 10k on the AH and i was tempted to buy it...would this be better for my 53 blm than the +2 / +3 int rings available now?

Keep your int rings. This ring is about stupid... very pointless... seriously.

What exactly does Latent Effect mean?
RE: Latent Effect
# Feb 17 2004 at 5:49 PM Rating: Decent
I have always heard that "Latent Effect" means the effect is only in place when your HP are in the yellow or orange, accounts vary as to which is required.

I do not know for certain that this is the case.

Can anyone confirm this?

Latent effects are effects you physically can't see (like a number on a stat screen) but are used none the less. They usually include effects like Steal up or Magic Attack/Defense up, but may include things like Blaze Spikes or Ice Spikes. This ring boosts your Magic Attack that in turn increses the damage you do with spells.
