I'm now 1/33 on this after 2 weeks of doing nothing but... It's probably worth noting that I killed the NM rather slowly most of the time.

0/2 on him after tonight. Gonna keep on truckin', at least til my NIN gets beyond the point of me wanting this. It's 56 now.

Really, the NM itself is no problem - I've been duoing it with a 75BLM friend, with myself as 70DRG/WHM. It's getting the new pop item that's annoying.

Hope it's not like my Leaping Lizzy pattern...0/26, with at least TH every time. My husband ended up claiming her and getting me the boots while I was at work a while back...and he is now 1/1 because of it.

Good luck to anyone who attempts this...I hope your luck is better than mine. Because it can't be much worse. :P

I know melody earrings and orphic egg activate when you have bard songs on, and were later updated so that COR rolls work too. Does the same idea apply to this?

Ok, so i dont know what ya'll are talking about. Myself as a 63Nin/Thf wit a 74Pld/Wardestroyed this thing. We cleared room and i popped it. I did die in the fight cuz i hit it with a Blade: Jin and got aggro when shadows were down. He was at 20% and used Throat Stab, then 2hrs to kill me. The PLD the switched from DD setup to full VIT/DEF+. He finished it in about 45secs.

Drop however, i did get lucky one. 1/1 Im just lucky like that i guess, cuz my NM record is...

Hoping this trend keeps up in my dyna runs with me getting high lots and god drops.

Went this morning to get the NM it was: my sister (75Whm), My mom (75 Bst), and me (75 RDM). He did MG and got my sister down to 35 HP but rest of us only took 200 dmg or so. We killed and i'm not 1/1 on Hototogisu. I didn't think I was going to get it because the bst camped it before and is 0/8 on it. I got lucky :]

I have taken Mijin Gakure to 17% of life of the NM, I have killed it with much facility.
How active the Latent effect?

This guy is frusterating and almost not worth the effort. To date, I'm 0/20 on him. I fight him every waking moment I have, camping the Rattle spawn every two hours I can.

I'm beginning to think it'll never drop. I wish they wouldn't nerf the drop rates. I really don't understand why SE has to be so stingy with Rare/Ex items. Its not like you can sell them and you still have to work to get them.

Here's to hoping that each "next time" that rolls around I'll see "You find a Hotogisu on the Meryl-footed Molberry."

When I got to level 50 with my ninja I thought it would be good to get the gear required 50-60, it makes the leveling much simpler. I saw this katana on cannotlinkto and decided to try to get it. I ended up reading about it here and started to loose confident in getting it, especially when I read the "I'm 0/44 on this" post ;_: I thought to myself it will just be another frustating drop to get like the Vilma's Ring (wich I havn't got yet, but I helped my friend getting it "¤#¤%"¤%"#).

Well yesterday I started to get all NIN AF pieces. I needed 4 coffer keys for that (bohyada tree, sea serpent grotto, ifrit's cauldron and kuftal tunnel). I thought to myself; 'Ok, I guess this whole day is booked hunting keys and coffers'. But guess what.. I killed totally 12 mobs for the four keys. So I thought, heck, I'll get the Hototogisu today too.

I went to the temple as RDM75/NIN37 and brought two friends (WHM75/BLM37 and THF70/NIN35). I found the ??? for the rattle and we headed to the "paintbrush room" got tp and popped the NM thinking 'atleast it's fun to kill NM's', not hoping too much on the katana.

We killed him and I got the drop, simple as that :) My THF friend who's a taru got killed by Mijin Gakure.. but hey.. he's a taru ;)

So that makes me 1/1 on it.

I was determined to get this and camped it every day after coming home from work. I can attest to the rest of the claims here, that he is indeed stingy. My record is 1/9 and I used the posts here as a guide. Indeed, the Rattle "???" is a 2 hour pop and the NM "???" is 15 minutes. As a matter of record. I did infact get the katana during his Mijin Gakure. I went solo as 75RDM/37BLM and decided @ around 15% health I'd chainspell and Thunder III what was left of his life bar. Well he still managed to get MG off, however, funny thing was he died as he was on the floor(before he gets back up) lol. Dropped the katana /joy

I'm 0/7 on this bastard... He makes me sh*t.

Got it first kill. Killed as BST75/WHM37 with the help of my lady on her BLM75/RDM37. Just a note: it will get back up after Mijin Gakure and keep attacking you. We found it hilarious.

I got this on new years, call it a New years present.

I was bored and went to look for the coffer in temple for my map. When i pass by i see the ??? for the rattle is up but i couldnt take it cause its rare/ex. rattle was in storage but you cant fool SE.

I went as RDM/NIN just to work on my dagger trials and i found a THF competing for the THF knife NM with gil sellers. (The yukine gang)

He came along to help we picked up a rattle from the ??? and when clearing the room i got a Ugalephi key (I was sure the damn coffer was in the locked door)and i got it there.

We killed the mob easily i finshed him with a savage blade and no drop.

I warped back home to get my rattle and this time when he was 5% i just turned to let the thf kill it with his THF knife. He did a dancing edge with THF knife to kill him and i got my katana.

Needless to say the mob was facing me the whole fight. (Its funny seeing melee trying to get hate from a mage)

Martial anelance + Joyeuse + Haste + barfire + Enthunder + Utsusemi + Stoneskin + Phalanx +Ice spikes = {Imposible to gauge} RDM/NIN

I was full HP all the time except on Mijin Gakure which he took about 20% on my HP only.

Im not sure how good this katana is now that my NIN is 61 and i use the dmg:30 katanas. GUess ill try it out

This is a stingy NM. I finally gone mine. I'm 1/22 now. Actually 1/20 cause I died twice. Both deaths from links (my own fault for not clearing room). I solo'd every time as bst/whm. CC does great job. 85% of the times I killed it, it only took 1 jug pet. I had stopped leveling nin at 54 cause I was so frustrated about not getting drop. Anyways....2k til 55. Can't wait to equip it. I'll be using Sai and this katana for time being.

I had a bad Dynamis Sandy day.. saw 3 Koga Hakamas drop... Couldn't get a lot over 100 on any of them. Pissed off, I thought I'd take my chance with a tonberry rattle I had sitting in my MH.

75NIN/32WHM soro with some MP gear. Had 216 MP as Hume with 1 MP merit. Cleared half the room rested to full. Then I popped this guy and pulled him to a corner. I kept him debuffed at all times and Diaga'd his Utsusemi. Easy battle just like killing a normal Ninja Tonberry except with more HP and *Mijin Gakure*. I kept barfira up and at about 10% he Mijin Gakured for 119 Dmg.

Got the drop and I'm very pleased as I just picked up an Unji. Unji+Hototogisu is pretty fast and I'd like to parse it some day againts the usual Fudo+Senji combo. It's not quite Unji+Unsho but maybe one day :p

Well, as stated before,
this indeed is a very difficult drop.
Luck? You can have this...

After 3 solo kills as rdm/nin and no drop,
I read some posts here claiming that you have a much bigger chance on drop
if you kill it so fast that the Beryl-footed Molberry doesn't get the opportunity to mijin gakure.
I tested this on 4 other runs, in my last group we killed it in about 20 seconds
and even when it was actually supposed to be dead, he STILL forced a mijin gakure upon us.
We even had Thief in our party, but even then it didn't drop.

I finally got the the drop on my 9th run
(which was a solo-run), and this time he seemed a lot harder and faster than he usually had been.
Like the 8 runs before he mijin gakured when he had around 15 percent health left.

The hard part seems to get the ???,
since lots of people down there in the temple seem to click everything in sight just for kicks
when they're just passing through for ZM4, cleansing tonberry hate or killing wespes for the larvae.
Because there is a 2-hour timer on the repop of the ???, it's most likely that some person clicked it,
the stingy part is that you won't know if he clicked it 119 or 2 minutes ago.

So my best advice to you is to camp the ??? *^_^*, start the timer when you clicked it and
you know that from that moment on the ??? will reappear in one of the 8 rooms exaclty 2 hours later.
Meanwhile you can go and kill the Beryl-footed Molberry,
you will even have plenty of time to get some of your friends down there.
Just remember that the toberry rattle is rare/ex, so each person can only wear one rattle in his inventory.

Just got this 2-3 days ago. I love it, I can easily tell the difference in speed.

I was out camping the ??? in the 8 rooms as usual. Then, finally I found it, I couldn't believe it. It was in one of the hidden rooms not seen on the map. I had been camping for the full two hours, so, I assume I logged on right after someone had just found it or something.

So, I've heard about the low drop rate on this thing, and wanted to take a THF with me. None of my THF friends were online at the time, so, that sucked. I then just did some random /sea for a THF 70-75. I found a JP THF named Raidenex (74THF). I asked if he'd help, using strictly auto-translator. He was in Jeuno, and he agreed. Then, I got my usual crew from my LS Sparky (75BLM), Bubbz (60WHM), Demitel (66NIN), and myself (75RDM). I know we had way more power than needed, but, meh.

Well, we get there, and the plan was to spawn it, then run into the hallway after opening the door with the paintbrush. That's what one of our members had said they did on the fight previously. So, I was like, okay. Well, we open the door, then I spawn it. When I run into the hallway, THE DOOR CLOSED, ><. I was the only one in the hallway. Man, I was so pissed. I wanted to fight bad as hell. Then, they keep fighting, trying to open the door at the same time, by the time I got out, the NM was down to about 10% hp, >< >< ><. I was so upset. Then, the thf died and dlvled shortly afterwards, grrrrrrr ><. Demitel was the only other person with a paintbrush to get me out. So, he couldn't just stand there and tank (doing the good job he always does). I was going to play the TA partner, but, anyway, none of that happened, ><. Luckily my friend Bubbz could R2 him, and he got his lvl back. Also, because of him (I'm assuming TH2 was the factor and kicked in) the Hototogisu dropped for me (I'm 1/1 now). I thanked, bowed, saluted, kneeled, etc., to everyone, more so Raidenex for coming and helping someone he doesn't even know. Plus, I felt really bad for his death. I'm hoping to repay the favor whenever I get a chance to him. My LS peeps I help whenever I get a chance.

Hototogisu translates as Cuckoo, as in the bird. Since this is a song bird it makes sense that the latent effect is triggered by songs.

Yes any brd song on you will trigger latent.. and with low delay you should be using this for a while in your sub hand.. along with a +1 weapon in the main hand to bring your delay down... It's actually a great weapon and you'll see your dual wield after 65 will fly... add any haste gear/spell/double atk... you shouldn't stop swinging barely!!!

Mis matched information can be very confusing. I'm a 75nin on Midgardsomr and I've took it as a challenge to camp and solo this NM. As far as information goes, this is 100% accurate. Yes, there are 8 rooms on the first map. The 6 rooms are seen on the map of the greater hallway area. Each room holds a tonberry inside and a sort of ruin within. However, there is also 2 rooms hidden off the map. When you zone into the first map, open the door to your left and follow the path off the map towards the back. The 2 rooms are previous to the zone line of where you go camp the maledictors for lanterns for zm4. The actual "Tonberry Lantern" [Rare Ex] is a 2hr pop once the ??? has been selected. It can pop in any of the 8 rooms and has "no" connection the ??? for the Offering of Uggalepih, or the ??? for the Uggalepih Whistle. So selecting the other two ??? not even on the ma won't help the spawn rate of the ??? Tonberry Rattle. That said, and rattle in hand, head over the 2nd map and to the room where you enter the Den of Rancor via paintbrush, also known as a the ZM4 entrance of the Levithan Prime entrance. Just before the room is a Doll Guard, which I soloed, even with him preformign Melt down on me for 200dmg. Once the guard is down, the door behind opens, and hang a left to the paitning room. 4 Tonberry inside, 2 ninja, 2 smns. At 75, soloing was fairly simple, but you must be quick about it. If you go with a group, you should be fine, minus the area of effect dmg of Mjijin Gakure. I went 5/1 on this NM. Do not underestimate Everyone's Grudge or Mijin Gakure. I had to pay 2500gil to reset my hate, which means I had a total of x20 Everyone's Grudeg against me, so it hurt. At 75, prior to reseting hate, the Beryl-footed Mogberry [popped NM] did Everyone's grudge, then throat stab, and then 2hred, thus killing me. Once I reseted hate, and came back restocked, I owned him. He's a lv 60 version of the Maat fight, for those of you ninja who are lv 70-75 and have completed Genki 5. I suggest using Hojo: Ni, Dokumuri: Ichi, and Jubaku: Ichi [as far as ninja tools]. For food and meds, I brought hi-potions, antidotes, and x3 persikos au leit [hp recovery drink for a good 600-700 hp. I used the persikos drink to cut my down time in half after kiling the 4 easy prey tonberry in the room. A substitute for this would be the lv 70 war shinobi gi. The Hototogisu is a nice ninja wpn despite it's lvl and dmg. It has a small delay, and the acc+3 doesn't hurt. Paired with a bard song [unsure which atm] the latent parry skill becomes active. This added parrying skill is useful against God HNM's [whom, imo, should not be fought w/o a brd in the alliance]. The NM is worth camping for, and is a nice show and tell to other lazy ninja. Hope the information can help you out.

I'm sorry I don't know the pos.. but I'll try my best. in the first map of the temple, there is 8 rooms. ??? will spawn in one of the rooms, click on it and you'll get a Tonberry Rattle (rare/ex). now find your way to a second map (which you'll first exit to yuhu. jungle but on the second floor of the temple and enter it there) in a room with a picture on the wall (you can target the picure) and trade the rattle to it. NM will pop~ and becareful... this NM use Mijin gakure! good luck.. hope this info will help a little
