ok as known as always a joyeuse has an effect of double attack, Very nice for rdms who wish to fight those big monsters or for soloing, overall Joyeuse+ RDM= good!. For paladins thats a different story, think about it. out of a paladins whole tmie of exp ptying at lvl 70+ in sorts of places fighting Very Tough and up- the damage is mainly around 2-7k in a total average ratio, depending on ur race, wars do over 40k, and drks/mnks do well over 60k, and also nins are 25k+ on the damage ratio from lvl 70+. so basically this means paladins are missing more then attacking, and they also are hitting monsters for less dmg then most of the other tanks. sooooo that means joyeuse would probably not work most of the time since double attack only works when you actually HIT the monster, the miss ratio on pld is well over 72% on IT monsters. Joyeuse works if you hit the monster with a 10-20% chance, so do you think its worth it for a pld to buy this?...i dont think so.

if your a paladin and if you dont want to be a gimp i suggest you get a Company Sword, might not look like much from face value. but it also has a hidden effect. if there is 1 person in
your party, that counts as 2 more dmg points, so a total party of 6 including you is 10 dmg points, and a full alliance is 34 dmg points. so regardless if you hit the monster or not it will still count, and everyone knows that damage gains hate. so overall PLD+ Joyeuse= Bad!.

You keep hate with your damage? Are you serious? While some of my hate does come from damage, I gain the majority of my hate by flashing/voking/shield bash/sentinel/rampart/warcry/Cure. (Did I miss anything?)

Pld/Nin work good in certain types of hi level exp parties? Did you know this? You can Dual-Wield Joyese to hit more often, and then spam WS from extra TP from hits. There are plenty who have pulled this off and found Joyuese very valuable.

Are you even a PLD?

If you are, then obviously you were dropped on your head too many times as a child.

So sad to see that ppl are so anxious to post their thoughts that they don't really think about what they are saying.

a: Joy-toy does not have "double attack" if ur thinking of the WAR trait. This sword "occasionally attacks twice". Not really a big difference but shows if you actually look at the item or not.

b: double attack or occationally attacks twice is not dependent on your ability to hit a mob. As anybody who actually plays WAR or even THF (triple attack), or has used any of the multi-hit weapons can tell you, the effect will go off regardless of if you hit or miss your target. Having played both WAR and THF and having used a multi-hit weapon myself, you can have double attack trigger after a miss and double attack itself can miss too.

c: as for the rest of your post I haven't used Company Sword so I cannot offer an opinion on its usefulness. And I'm not afraid to admit it instead of just posting what pops into my head at the time.

d: if your going to post something you don't know anything about atleast own up to it up front and start by saying "I haven't actually used this but here is what I think it does."

e: the fact that you think this sword could be bought just adds to the fact that you know nothing about it.

Thank you and please try again.

Hate to burst your bubble, but this sword is rare/ex. It can't be bought. Might want to rethink all that research.

can charby be slept? or bound?
sleep, bind, nuke, sleep is what i have in mind however i dont really know how good his resistance is... anyone have an idea on this strategy for a rdm to solo it. itd take hella long time if ya could and it prolly would go unclaimed, knowing how NICE people are in game, theyd prolyl steal it, but if its possible id like to try
RE: sleep bind nuke sleep
# Jan 18 2006 at 10:03 AM Rating: Decent
I'm not sure if it can be binded or slept but one thing im positive about is that it can be gravitize so like if your tank dies and it's after you, have someone gravitize it and start kiting it. NO JOBS COULD SOLO IT, I REPEAT, NO JOBS COULD SOLO IT. Definitely A Ninja and healers are needed, having a bard makes the fight much easier but is not necessary. Would like to thank my ls (HighCouncil) and some strangers by the name of Dekard (Nin) and some female rdm that was bossy :/ for helping me get the joyeuse.

My experience
# Jan 14 2006 at 2:49 PM Rating: Decent
He's really not too hard... You just really have to watch out for the water elemental behind the door...THAT'S your biggest problem.

Well the first day, three of us were camping it...competing against some RMT. Chary popped and RMT claimed, I started gathering some reinforcements. RMT wiped, but by the time all of my reinforcements got down to Chary, RMT had recovered and had like 50 back ups >.> I couldn't find a tank anyways... but at least I had ToD.

So let's see, I got up at 7 am the next day to camp chary...managed to find 3 people to help me: RDM (me), WHM, NIN, and a PLD/BRD hehe...yes, a PLD/BRD. We had other competetion, but about 15 minutes before Chary popped, they left. ^_~ yay us. We claimed it and we were doing really well...however, being the stupid RDM I am..I stood by the door and aggroed the water elemental...tried to keep it slept...but just wasn't working. We died. Luckily, no one had heard about Chary being up, and no one else came to camp it. We raised and rested up, and claimed him again. This time I stood at the end of the ramp and we took it down. Was a lil scary, our PLD died once but he raised and was unweakened before too long. NIN had bat earrings, and the PLD was singing mambo... DEAD!

{Chrissie obtains a Joyeuse.} Yay me! ^_^

<3 <3 <3 Like to shout out my thanks to Docj, Eman, and Burrfoot on Garuda! <3 <3 <3

Does anyone think that a 74rdm/37nin could solo this thing? or duo it with a bst 74? i can get my eva+ alot with the scorp harness, raven gear, spirit torque and all that jazz? any ideas on the matter, i really dont wanna have to bug all my friends to come down and help me so im thinking if its possible id definatley like to give it a go.

Absoloutly not, it will rip through your shadows very fast. Unbuffed he will probably kill you in one round of attacks, depending on how many double/triple/etc. attacks go off.

You can off-hand joyeuse and still strike twice, all though offhanding it does seem to make it proc less often. Generally 1/3 on mainhand (often 1/2 o.o; ) but offhand ive seen it go up to like 1/9 at times -_-;.

75Nin, 75Thf/Nin (taru), 75Sam, and 75Brd took Charybdis down last night in about 20-30minutes. It got kind of slim when the Nin got killed by Chary's aoe but our thief tanked it like a champ. I sang double Mambo for them while the samurai meditated then went in and out and slashed him up. Ninja became unweakened when Chary was about 35%hp left and we slowly brought him down. At about ~20% the thief went down because of the aoe attack and at that point I soul voice'd and sang double mambo. At 12%hp Samurai 2hr'd and finished him. [excitement]

New owner of a Joyeuse, now I can actually solo^^; Thank you Damascus, Manaboy, and Zangard.

Trio'd Chary with a Rdm and a Brd three times, with Nin debuffs, Elegy, and Mambo, Manta Blind + Bat Earrings, you might as well be in a Ballista against a lvl 2 Elvaan Drk.
Question

I realized this doesn't say "Additional Affect: Occasionally Attacks Twice". Does that mean this can be used in the Sub-weapon and still Attack Twice, or does it have to be in your Main for it to attack twice?

Finally, after 21 hours of camping and killing placeholders, following 5 pops for ToD's, one 14 man wipe, i got my Joyeuse!!! :D

We took it down with 7 people: 2 NINs 2DRG 3RDM (and a SAM that joined to help at around 40% HP)

I'd recommend smallest party possible though. 75nin thf brd rdm could do this easy.

As for pop times, i tracked 5 pops, deciding to come a few hours before opening of window (i went with 8-12 hour window) to start killing placeholders.
My experience shows a 8-10 hour window if you kill placeholders for a few hours.
Times: 8 - 8 - 9 - here i mustve missed a pop cause i came late at exactly 8 hours since last ToD, i ended up camping 9 hours together with a JP trio nin thf rdm that got the claim, it popped 17 hours after last confirmed ToD (so probably 2 x 8-9 hour pops) after this again i came 8 hours after last ToD, and it popped after 2 hours of killing placeholders at 10 hours since last ToD.

I'll say one thing nin's are essential, thf's are great as well, brd is a godsent. RDM/whm is good for healing cause of slightly higher survivability rate in case of pulling hate. DRG/whm is greatly underestimated for healing, they rock as extra healer on this.
As for other melee jobs, you'll have to have a lot of healing power to keep everyone out of yellows, unless all melee goes /nin. (and.. extra melee means more TP for charby >< )

As a 70RDM/nin i could kill the placeholders solo without too much effort, i simply DoT them with dual wield daggers & enspell so i could skillup at the same time. An RDM75 could simply fry them with thunderIII hehe.

Grats to Kebo, Kupo LS, Senoska and Marybell on getting their Joyeuse during the time i was following ToD. ^^

Thanks to Dragonslayer LS for the heroic 14 man attempt & inevitable wipe (we tried without nins & brds.. slaughter >< good thing RDM af is red so ppl wont notice the bloodstains from dead LS mates on my armour ;_;)

Thanks to Krista, Filth, Anthny, Aviance, Celebrindor and Gerkin for killing it with me :)
Special gratitude to Gerkin & Celebrindor (both RDM) for passing on Joyeuse for me. m(_ _ )m

And tx to Manix & Ahgevis for trying to come to help, allthough we killed it before you arrived. Still appreciated. ^^

Edit: i went to check on charby for a friend today, it again popped a little after 8 hours since last ToD. This was 2 hours before the update.
This also means that 6 possibly 7 pops in a row were all around 8/9 hour window, with one popping at 10 hours.

Edit: followed 2 more pops, both 8-8.30 spawns; it looks like SE has stabilized this spawn greatly, most pops ive seen now are all around 8 hour mark. (never less then 8 so far though)

Joyeuse

I always wanted this sword since I saw it on another RDM a long time ago. I always wondered if 2 RDM can kite it or a lvl 75 bst can solo it if you keep getting more pets. That's almost impossible with its large HP gauge defense and attack power. I happen to get lucky, my friend told me the time of death and I thought it was about 8 hours later, then he told me he didn't think so anymore. I was bored so I decided to travel there, maybe if I log there it will pop sometime. I must say the last two times I tried to get it, I only camped it for 2 hours tops.I'm not very patient. Well that day it just happend to be up when I got there, which is funny because I played ballista and messed around doing nothing before the idea of going there came along. I called for help right away and I got 2 nin 3 rdm a brd and a pld to help me out. There was already a nin inside there staring at Chard, but my friends got there faster so he joined us instead. Now I'm a happy RDM with Joyeuse and Guespiere. Some of the people there didn't lot because I helped them with Jelly Ring and because they didn't camp it or find it with me ^^;; which is a good thing cause I lotted a 244.
By the way, this sword is better than Enhancing, it's only too bad the damage is low, but the TP makes up for it, it eats away blinks and interrupts spells if you're in ballista. Enhancing Sword is good damage but slow, and that's all it's special for, a little more attack and accuracy makes it a good sword, other than that there's nothing too great about it. I'd rather hit twice to make up the damage at a fast rate (dmg 35 X 2 = 70 dmg ), and get TP to use Savage Blade, especially with dual wield, I interrupt the hell out of WHM & BLM in Ballista, followed by a defense down with Guespiere, I have bad accuracy as a RDM, but hey I hit 3 times each turn, I can afford to miss once or twice. Much fun.

A little bit of history on this sword-

The Joyeuse was the personal sword of Charlemagne, a King in the 700's. The legenday sword was supposedly forged from the Lance of Longinus; Longinus was the name of the soldier who stabbed Jesus's side after he was crucified, and apparently his Lance went down in history as quite an artifact.

Yeah its all myth and most likely false, but its still fun to see where SE pulls this kind of stuff from ^.^;

and yes... I am dying to get this sword >_<;

For some reason when I hit RDM72 I decided I wanted this sword more than anything else. I went down to SSG multiple times just to get a ToD on charby. After two 10 hour camping spans without so much as seeing the NM (yes I killed placeholders the whole time) I had all but given up. Then server maitenence came along and I figured "what the hell, his timer may have been reset." So I ran down to SSG and killed both the Devil Mantras in his room. After waiting 15 minutes the first Devil Mantra repopped and I had basically lost hope. As I was about to escape I take one last look at the room and there is Charybdis.

So right away I start yelling to my ls to come down and help out. Everyone begins to run down, but I realize we have one small problem, no brd. I end up asking random BRD75's to come help and I end up getting a BRD75 and his WHM and THF friends to all come help. Another BRD also ended up logging into the ls at the last minute and joined us. 9 people made it to the Charby room in about an hour.

We claimed Charby and took him on with....
NIN75
BRD75
BRD75
SAM75
WHM75
WHM75
RNG75
THF72
RDM72 (me)
BLM69

The fight wasnt very hard at all. The bards kept the melees Double Mamboed with the NIN as the main tank. I kept Charby paralyzed, blinded, slowed and bio'd. Paralyze was a must because it compleatly destroyed his multiple attacks. A devil mantra ended up popping and the SAM and I took it down while the rest remained on charby. It is very important nobody takes hate off the main tank because one round of attacks is easily enough to kill almost anyone. The rng ended up getting killed because they got aggro and the 6-hit thing got them but other than that nobody went below yellow the whole fight. Joyeuse obviously dropped and I got it.

I'd like to thank the members of DSD for coming down so fast to help out and the BRD, WHM and THF who came to help. I also wanna wish anyone else who attempts this the best of luck.

Camped this guy for 5 days straight, doing nothing other than getting ToD, getting people down to SSG and praying to get the claim. After 4 days of not being able to get people down to SSG, I was finally able to get a group.
While we were down there, we killed place Holders for the Shoreleaper NM (Don't know his full name)and got it and Siren's Hair eventually. Right after that, another allaince with a PLD tank out pulled us when Charybdis popped... but died @50% because they tried to kite it. My PT pulled Chary then, BRD and BLM died (got too much hate; we had a THF/NIN tank - takes time to build hate) but after that it was smooth sailing.

You can use a WAR/NIN on this thing, as I'm very glad to see a poster stated below. Some other melee with /NIN works too, as long as they can keep hate.

I just made this post on the Warrior board:

EDIT: (in accordance to my statement about another melee with /NIN) I strongly recommend someone with a grade of C in evasion or higher, if you're going to go this route.

Second EDIT: Bah, I'm sorry, I meant to post this on the Charybdis board. >.<

I had heard rumors about Rapiers being considered piercing damage, which would make sense as they're rather pointy. But when I just soloed the A Timely Visit quest with my Joyeuse, I hit the skeleton NM for about 72% of what I was doing to the shadow NM...which is closer to the 75% damage that slashing weapons do to bones than the 50% that piercing weapons do. So I think it is slashing, not piercing.

With /WAR sub the double attack procs just a bit under 100%. I love it.

Can the double attack effect go off during a weaponskill? A quadruple-double attacked Vorpal Blade would just be ridiculous damage for a red mage.

I hit 70 and realize I'm finally able to use this sword I've been hoping to use now for about 10 levels. So my LS says, "Go camp it, clear the placeholders, and if it pops, we'll be there."

So I get there around 6pm, and I found out from someone in the vacinity that Charybdis popped about an hour ago. Well I decided to stay and clear placeholders so I'd be the person who sees the pop. I was worried about clearing mobs that check DC to a 70, but I found a stategy that make them a piece of cake. In the process I was getting about 68-73 xp per kill. I did this from 6pm until midnight, and about 12:05am Chrybdis pops.

I make the call on the LS and within 10 mins I have over 15 people there to support me. Needless to say the fight was cake as well, and I love my sword. I have never as a RDM started meleeing and pulled hate, but if I have haste + Joyeue on me... it happens.

Camp it, own it, love it.
