This is also used to break the level 20 cap, so be sure to save one when levelling off of it, as they can be hard to find in AH when you need one :)

Use it to level smithing from 15-18 (or you can stop at 17) and move to Iron ingots ...

edit: I made an Aspis + 1 while level 17 smithing with advanced image support and light day! yippie!

Actually, the advanced smithing guy gives you this formula at ~lvl8, that's when I started making them, sure I broke a few crystals, but got good skillups and still made a profit.

I switched to Iron ingots at lvl 11 or so. Harder to make, but ingots stack, Aspis (or is that Aspii?) do not.
