fencer's ring
# Aug 03 2008 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
Just bought this ring for my 50rdm. I was quite amazed at how cheap it was. Only cost me 3k. Of course, things are much cheaper on Kujata server since the economy crash but still 3k for any ring is hard to beat. I usually play rdm/drk for solo bc of the str bonus and I can wear my viking shield but I am considering going back to /nin bc of the increased damage I can do with this ring. However, the idea of having to keep my hp in yellow kinda decreases it's usefulness in my mind. Perhaps I should just put my assailant's ring back on.

With capped enhancing, an en- spell, Beestinger and Hornetneedle, this ring is the perfect accessory for your average RDM/NIN elemental farmer. (:P) Blow an elemental WS every time you get 100TP, and don't heal yourself above 75% HP.

If you're 60 RDM/30NIN with the right -en spell for the elemental you're killing, your en- spell can hit for around 17 damage. (Guess, I really forget. It's at least that.) With Dual Wield 2, Haste, and the naturally low delay of Beestinger and Hornetneedle you attack twice every 2.2 seconds. Now, assuming you hit for only 1 damage, that's 36 damage every 2.2 seconds. With this ring active the damage jumps up to 46 damage per 2.2 seconds. That's a lot of damage against an elemental, and that doesn't factor in criticals, weapon skills (Which hit for 200+ if right element), how much more than what I guessed your en- spell will damage the elemental, or just hitting above 1 damage.

Conclusion:
Beestinger + Hornetneedle + Haste + Fencer's Ring + >25NIN sub = Helluva dead elementals

As a Tarutaru, if I want to kill more than one elemental per weather, I have to get all the damage I can in. lol (-_-)

I looked around some more and found out some more information.

Here's the deal.
The formula for en-spell damage listed in the RDM FAQ after 150 enhancing is Skill Level/20 +5 = damage. I don't know if it's rounded down or up. I'm assuming down.

As a naked level 75 you have 256 enhancing magic, and an easily acquireable +37 more for macroing in. This would give you 19 or 20 damage per swing. The max enhancing magic boost would be +48, which would make it a solid 20 damage. This ring brings it up to 25 damage per swing.

Assuming the 1 damage per swing every 2.2 seconds again, this would be 52 damage per 2.2 seconds and 10TP gain. If you boosted accuracy as much as possible you could use a weaponskill every 22 seconds for about 200.

If it takes 4 seconds for a weaponskill and every swing connects, that makes 720 damage per 26 seconds, or 1440 damage per 52 seconds. It would average out to about 1600 damage per minute, or about 27.7 dps with WS included.
The en-spells alone are 23 dps. Also, on the correct day, and maybe with the right Obi, it's +10% more. That would be 25 dps from en-spells, and about 30 dps with WS and attacks. Not too shabby.
It should be noted that the only time a RDM ever attacks for a straight minute while soloing/duoing is when they've got a ninja tank friend or someone holding hate, and they don't happen to be casting haste or refresh. I know that when I actually solo as RDM I end up buffing for about as much time as I attack.

Though this is just a pipe dream right now, I'm collecting gear and intend to test it out some day. I currently have Enhancing Torque(+7), Warlock's Tights(+15), and a Fencer's Ring. I have the pop item for Hornetneedle, and I have access to try to get Glamor Jupon (+3). I'm watching the AH for an Augmenting Earring(+3), but my odds on getting a Merciful Cape(+5) aren't that hot. The AF2 boots(+15) will come with time. Currently my Enhancing magic is capped at 199, and I'll probably keep it capped all the way to 75 (61 now). Well, I'll keep posting as I get stronger.

I just did a little bit of testing on this. Although it's been said the Latent effect activates in yellow HP and TP less than 100%, I wanted to add that the exact amount of HP for the latent is 75% HP or less. Your HP is yellow when it is below 75% so you can still have the latent effect activated with "white" HP.

I noticed that it kicks in when I'm in yellow hp and below. I normally do 17-18 dmg with enchantment, it then jumps up to around 22-23 when i have the ring on with yellow hp and under.

I then noticed that it totally stopped working. Had no idea why, but it was mentioned above that it stops working if your above 100TP

which is probalby why, good to know why now.

hey All. Davidge here ( RDM53) sylph server. I recently was able to get ahold if this ring and I would like to thank everyones input on this piece. I was hunting lizards in teh Nest and found that the enspells do increase after you hit the yellow.. Best thing an RDM can do from what I have seen is keep stoneskin up, try and keep your MP maxed and your HP in the yellow for this to start kicking in....No mob stand a chance now !!!

Ok it's Strangeone's turn to help the comunity

I just discovered something about this ring. There are actualy 2 conditions for activating the latent effect:

1) you must be in the yellow or lower
2) you must have less than 100% TP

That 2nd one caused me not end of greif thinking that there was a bug. Recent elemental hunting has however revealed it's existance. Repeatable and testable. Have fun with this one

incidentaly since this ring is little understood it's prety cheap at 30k for a bcnm drop when I bought it.
#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 09 2004 at 10:56 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Thanks for the information, but this is common knowledge already. There's a nice guide somewhere that has an collection of most latent effect items and when they trigger.

Yup this is HP based. I sub NIN and dual wield and the damage just racks up like crazy with an En spell and this ring are equipped.

I can confirm that latent effect for this item kicks in when HP is in the yellow. Normally of late my En-spells add 11-12 damage. My HP slipped into yellow and my Enstone started doing 16-17 additional damage.

Latent Effect only take effect if you are in RED HP.

If you convert into RED HP the effect doesn't occur unless you take damage, more than 0 dmg, or change weapons

I find it not a good ring to use.

It works with any weapon, adding +5 to the En-spell damage. Not just swords.

if you have MNK or THF sub both HTH attacks will get the bonus.

I heard latent was yellow or worse, I could be wrong though, as I have no experience with Latent Effects whatsoever.
