drop rates
# Sep 30 2004 at 8:15 AM Rating: Decent
I recently bought this desk on Leviation for 250K. I leveled my thief to 15, subbed it and headed to test it out on Tabor Beaks as did the last poster. I too had the same drop rate 1/6.
I then zoned and tried it out on the wasps and noticed I was getting quite a few double drops.
It's way too early to determine if this desk works or not. I also bought it for the Synthesis Success Rate Up potential. The way I look at it is its a Level 96 Goldsmithing Item one would think it would have to do something!

Well it gives Moghancement: Conquest if it's the only item in your mog house. So even if it doesn't give TH +2 or Synthesis Success up, it still does something
And the testing begins.

Rhodes, I notice in your signature that you don't have a thief job listed. Did you "test" it with a thief sub or a thief main?

I just bought this item last night for 400k (6th one ever sold on Fairy), and took out my 65 Rng/32 Thf for a farming trip. Terrible drop rate on Tabar beaks in Sauromugue, even for TH1. Out of 6 kills, only one beak dropped anything. I then went to level my Thf in Garlaige, and noticed that every mob dropped everything they could possibly drop every kill for like 10 straight kills. *shrug*. Party didn't last long cuz it was late. Maybe you have to be thief main to get the TH+ effect.

Anyway, I've got one more test to do. My Mog house is cluttered with furniture, and my dominant moghancement is fire (because I make lots of bullets). I'm going to clean out my mog house and go farming with just the desk and see if I notice a difference as a thf main or sub. Probably parser it out. TH is one of those things thats hard to measure. Even with TH2, some times drop rates seem like crap for things.

"Even with TH2, some times drop rates seem like crap for things."

Well... duh! For each monster, every item it drops has it's own drop rate. Well maybe SE didn't go to THAT much trouble, but yes some items have horrible drop rates period, farming for Tabar beaks is never fun, the drop rate sucks. If you have TH (one or two) guess what, the drop rate will still be terrible, just not quite as terrible. So I'm really sick of hearing THFs who camp Lizzy *once* with TH2 and complain they didn't get the drop as if TH2 is supposed to garentee them the boots.

On another note, why is there a debate about TH1 vs. TH2 wrt Rare vs. normal drops?? I read an interview with someone from SE. Someone asked "Does treasure hunter 1 help with rare drops also, or does only treasure hunter 2 help?" and the answer was "Well, what do you think?" (sort of *implying* it does). Ok so that isn't solid proof at all, but it only makes sense. Apperently nobody has ever noticed that there is no correlation between an item being marked as "Rare" and it's drop rate actaully being low. Some things hardly ever drop, some not often, some quite a bit, some all the time, and some are literally garenteed. If an item has a crappy drop rate, TH1 isn't going to feel like it's helping, TH2 may or may not even feel like it's doing much either for that matter, but it's hard to measure. Drop rates are also affected by things like moon phase, making it even harder to test.

All that aside, I highly doubt this desk has any hidden stats. It's not a new recipe, it's actaully been around forever. So how did NOBODY ever know about it till just recnetly??? Becuase it done'st really do anything that great, beside mogenhacement conquest, which it isn't even the only item that gives that. Woudln't it make more sense if some high level crafter just claimed it had all these hidden stats?? He (or anyone else for that matter) could have submitted the info to
allakhazam, and nobody would have actaully checked if it was true or not b/c you can't (well it's relaly hard.) There are plenty of items that haev well known easily observed hidden stats taht aren't listed on allakhazam, like the elemental staves. So why are these hidden stats listed?? I really do believe taht some high level crafter just made all this stuff up to make more money.
lol

I was was the "anon" that shouted the sell of this desk. I bought this piece a long time ago from a friend. the transaction is listed in the AH. i have always had good luck in farming. I was online and i had got a tell from someone asking about the desk. (i guess they saw my name was last on the list.) They told me about the great things of the desk. and said they had the only other one on the server. and was asking me did i notice this. Well i have always had good luck with NM's and farming. so i took it to be true. Im thinking IF IT IS NOT TRUE THEN WHY WOULD HE TELL ME THIS!.. he did not atempt to sell me his! .. so after knowing this i did some research on other items that had a "Treasure Hunter" effect. I found the "Thief's Knife" and it sells for an amazing 5,000,000 gil! so i though, the hell with this farming, i was going to go for the sell of this item, that i had gotten by the luck.

Katsuhiku if you wonder why I would not give you a straight anwswer, it is because i was thinking, I cant sell this item if i tell people "Yeah, I made money with it farming for the decade. but i think it would be better to go for a lump some and save me some time and effort. Ya know??

People did become questionable about the stats on the desk. and i defended it.

So i finally did some testing.. (i felt dumb for unequiping the desk to go farm, but what the hell. it was the only way to know for sure.) At first it did appear as if my dropes were down. but though the run of a normal day of Farming i saw i was still in the same ballpark as i was with it. This went on for 4 days. So i sold the item.

Just for your info. I had an offer of 600k for the desk and turned it down. I thought sence the "thief's knife" sold for 5,000,000, i would be a fool to let this go for 600k.

As i said it belongs to someone else now and it sold for 300k at AH.

I dont know if the other desk owner was trying to get me to sell mine for big and make me look like the initial @$$ and be his little puppet, and then slide his in for a big sell. I will never know. But all i do know is 4 days of testing did not prove it worth the big gil the item's projected cost would appear.

But who knows... it still could be so. but im doing fine without it. But there you have it. thats the truth of the desk.

One last thing. I did not post this info here, could be someone who heard my shouts or the other desk owner. I dont know... One of the things that happened to me to add fuel to the fire and made me think the story of the desk was true, was when i was going for my "Carbuncle Ruby" i got it on my first leech! i have heard accounts where people has farmed for days and not had a drop. (funny side note : I won the Ruby from a 63 point lot.. LOL!) Thinking of that made me think, hell sounds like it might have not been luck at all. (besides the lot.)

and in referance to the "Half now, half later" ask Tomoshi and Kaazki (not real sure of the spelling, sorry guys) Two blm's i have partyied with. I gave them my Ice staff to level with... maybe im just too trusting. (they did give it back. good guys!) One thing that was left out of the story by Katsuhiku was i told him if the Desk did not live up to the story i would give him his gil back. and if it did live up to it he owed me the other half. People on the server know me. and i try to keep a good name.

*edit*
ps. Katsuhiku, I appreicate you not useing my name. but i dont mind to lay it all out on the table. =)

Someone was shouting about selling this on my server. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. In any case, he said those above effects...+TH, etc etc. Of course I was interested. So I /tell'ed the person selling and he told me that it was a great item. He said it made him all of his money and he wouldn't be where he was without it. So I asked the price...he said the cost of a Vermillion Cloak...So then I told him I don't have that much...Then he said for whatever I have on me...(1 million at the time). Then I said I don't want to pay that much up front, so he said he'd take half now, and half later... A few times I would ask him why would you sell an item that's so great and he could never really give a straight answer. All he told me was that he needed it to buy the cloak to level with his friends. Oh, also, I asked why he didn't give it to a close friend...no straight answer there either. All-in-all I'd have to say it's fake. No one would be so desperate to get rid of something that made them so much. Don't be a sucker. :D
uhhh

lol this is probably true but lol in my opinion, its all a scam....someone who has this item says hey ill tell allakhazam that it gives steal +10 or TH+2 or somthing BS and then people will buy it from me for outrageous prices..... lol it probably has TH+2 but lol thats just what i think lol

I'm not sure why I don't trust this info, it just doesn't seem right.

Oh well, I bought one anyway for 300k. Currently running some experiments on drop rates.

I just bought one today. I'll post a screenshot if someone wants to see it. It gives Moghancement: Conquest. No comment about the hidden effects, I'm 24RNG and I went out and killed 10 simple mobs (first thing I saw when I stepped out of San d'Oria) and I noticed a particularly low drop rate. So no idea about TH +2, but I'm going to check later when fighting higher level mobs.

So far still not sure about the effects. I activated the Moghancement: Conquest with my 24RNG and went to Yuhtunga. The drops were very poor. That leads me to believe that either a) TH +2 is not true, or b) TH +2 doesn't have any effect unless you already have TH (i.e. you are a THF main or THF sub with THF >= Lv. 15) Not sure when I'll get a chance to test this out, but I do know that I've NEVER seen a rabbit drop two rabbit hides even with TH1 until I took my THF36 into East Ronfaure with this thing in my mog house.

As for the Moghancement: Conquest. Not exactly sure what this does, I was in Yuhtunga with a friend and we were in the same party, exactly the same level. We were getting approximately 30 conquest points per mob, give or take a few. I was NOT getting double the conquest points. In fact on some fights I'd get less than he did, and he had Moghancement: Experience. However, this could have been due to the fact that the region was under Beastman control at the time. Wont' get a chance to better test this until Elshimo goes into some other region's control (preferably San d'Oria, sine that's where I'm from)

EDIT: I went to Ronfaure and killed everything in sight. Overall I slew about 30 mobs. The drop rate was unbelievable. About 80% dropped something, and of the ones that dropped, about half would drop multiple items. As mentioned above, I got two rabbit hides from a single forest hare, soemthing I've never done with just Treasure Hunter 1

As you suggested, you must have Treasure Hunter before you can add +2. So a THF main or THF sub is required for this desk to be effective.
