I've recently started using this katana and I've found out that the light damage additional effect doesn't go off during the day. It seems it can only go off at night, between 18:00-6:00 game time, same as the latent conditions of some pieces of NIN AF.
According to the definition in wikipedia.org, the word 'shiranui' means 'phosphorescent light'. That means it absorbs light during the day and releases it during the night?

To further expand upon this time thing from the previous post, I've been playing around with my Shiranui for about four in-game days now; as near as I can tell, its window for the light proc is not quite the same as AF effects. I'm only seeing it go off between 20:00-4:00.
Given that the name Shiranui is tied to such supernatural phenomenons as the Will-o'-the-Wisp, it wouldn't be too crazy to say SE's devs were going for a whole "spiritual weapon against undead" quirk. They've done stranger things, after all.
Or maybe it's supposed to go off from 18:00-6:00 and mine's just broken.

This has never dropped EVER in all the time I've done sky runs which is well over a year now.
the light proc rate is low
maybe there is some hidden effect or conditions to boost the rate,
otherwise this is only useful for the +3 eva and the fact that it's a katanna with ok dps vs other weapons with +eva.

Wow, nice one,.. what grade are you in, 5th 6th?
Its name means marine bioluminescence, it describes true a sight of much beauty. I see it seems to have similar Light properties.

Actually it translates into "phosphorescent light" (unless my translating is rusty) but pretty much the same meaning.

This katana is not something to go crazy for. The KS 30 drop, Shinjinriko, is a MUCH better katana to use off hand (After you remove the latent of course ^^ Dmg 38 Critical Hits +6) More dmg equals more hate and at higher lvls, those critical hits make the mob focus more on you than that little Taru casting ThunderIV :)

ok got this guy today, must have been lucky too since it was my first time to kill MG and I got the drop, but so far from using it I have yet to see the added effect go off even once during 2 hours of xp -.-, the extra 3 eva is nice but to tell the truth I prefer the Shinjinriko(sp) to this guy for an off hand weapon.

it is very rare drop 1/8 on this one, hardly notice the eva+ and ligh dmg tho =.=;
with Suzaku boots MND+15.. ligh dmg is the same...

Does the mother globe give a 100% drop on this item?
No, my ls has killed it many, many times and haven't even got a single drop yet. About the same rate of drop as the other rare/ex weapons from the trigger mobs. Maybe even a lower chance.

Level 0 just means that it's level is unknown. Given that this mob is found in the Ru'Avitau Shrine, I'd say it's probably 70+, seeing as everything else there is. :P

Probably the best katana in the game, leaving out the fully finished Relic katana. All any NIN wants is more evasion ^^.

Nah... Unji and Unsho are WAY better than this.
I'm sorry, I am way below this lvl, but looking at the stats, I don't understand how the Unji or Unsho are better katanas. Both are alittle less dmg, though they're delay compensates for that alittle. One decreases your vit, while the other agi. Both increase dex and str alittle... not too much in the stat modifications for a 70+ either way.
If you are mithra you're dex is already obnxious... and you can take a 1 point hit in agility... And, well, 6 str is fairly nominal depending on your character setup.
While the same may be true for just 3 evasion, I personally promote evasion... But who knows, maybe at that level increasing evasion is no longer important.
I am just curious. It would seem that the other two katanas might be fashionable, and even the best to own at 71, this katana does seem like a valid and likely replacement to one of the two when you reach 73... And if you lvl at my rate, that could be 3-6 months at that lvl:P

At 75 you won't be using an eva set, so the +3 evasion skill isn't that great. Also, the Unji and Unsho are great because a lot of nin use NIN AF body (enchances dual wield) at 75 for TP gain, and Unsho and Unji make nin have near 100 fists.
