I just want to mention I think this weapon is really worth having ^^ With my austere armor the Blood Pact wait +3 means nothing, and the 63 MP is really worth it.

And also, if the +3 wait time really bothers you, just take the staff off. You won't have full MP through your whole party/mission/whatever, so when you're like 100-200 away from being full, just take the staff off and the +3 wait is gone. Easy, ya? ^^

Auster gear, isn't that the stuff that costs from 500k to over a 1 mil?

Yeah, it kicks ***, lot's of ***. But for those of us that don't buy gil or like farming for months on end, the AF is still an option.

Actually, I've used my AFv1 pants and boots since I got them. The AF hands are comperable to the Austere Gloves, and the Austere Hat really pales in comparison to the Evoker's Horn. As far as I'm concerned, the only piece of Austere worth buying is the robe, for obvious reasons.

Secondly, no, Himmel Stock does not suck. Quite the contrary, in fact. +3 on your blood pact timer isn't going to kill you, especially when the trade-off is +63 mp. I'd much rather take the 63 mp that I can use for avatar perpetuation, MP for another blood pact, cures, or whatever you can use it for, than be able to tag Aerial Armor 3 seconds faster. Obviously, however, you should Mog House this at 51 and pick up elemental staves. I wouldn't suggest selling it though, as I know mine's been insanely valuable to me throughout my 40 and 50 capped CoP missions.

Anyway, sir, I think you may want to know your stats before you "think" you know what you're talking about. And while you're at it, learn how to spell and type.
Why some people might want it...
# Dec 14 2004 at 10:02 AM Rating: Decent
I have been thinking about getting this item. Some reasons why i think this is better than the AF staff are as follows:

1) You can use this one level earlier.
2) You can use this stf in BCNM 40.
3) You can use this in the upcoming update for Chains of Promathia. From what I heard, there will be a 40 cap.
4) You can have this equipped, use a Blood pact while you're waiting on a pull, and just rest a little bit for your mp to be refilled.
5) ....Well i can't think of one off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone else can add one.

First of all i want to say kudos to those who don't knock equipment b4 trying it. Next, please take the following into consideration; equip it cast a high mp cost BP then swap out = Free Blood pact and you don't need to worry bout the +3 to BPT. (makes aerial armor nearly free)

Well, lastnight, while partying in Cape Terrigan, I noticed a neat little effect.. The Himmel Stock, which I had recently bought, had made my summons only cost 5mp instead of the normal 8 per tick at my level (57 at the time). Well, this means I found a nice little effect, no? But the problem is what is it? Avatar Perpetuation -3? Or just making all the upper summons cost 5 per tick? Just a nice little effect I saw, so I felt I had to share. :)

This seems quite nice ... as a hume summoner, I'm leaning toward the mp bonus, but the blood pact delay is a drawback. Doesn't seem THAT bad though, but if it ever becomes a problem when I pt I'll probably use the AF staff and equip this just to feel pretty. As for Austere vs. AF, I'm only 31 so I don't have to worry about that QUITE yet. Plus I'll never be able to afford them @_@ Anyway I think I'll be keeping my RSE hotpants for a while. They're pretty good for smn/whm.

Now, granted, SMN isn't my main, so I don't follow the ins and outs of it, I do use it as a subjob though. +63mp is pretty huge in all its entirety, but probably for a SMN I'm sure you eat that up like breakfast.

Don't get me wrong +MP values are good for BLM, RDM, WHM, and SMN, but you're forgetting slightly that +MP Regen is what really counts. I mean, 1000mp doesn't do you very good if you can't regenerate a good portion of it quickly to reuse it. =)

As the levels progress, for those of you who have a lower level, +MP Regen becomes significantly more important as you'll see with Refresh, Ballad I and Ballad II.
RE: Point of interest
# Apr 20 2005 at 5:31 AM Rating: Decent
>.> isn't that what Refresh and Mage's Ballad are for? If you mean MP + while healing that's covered by The Dark/ Pluto Staff and Seer's Tunica (neither of which are usually equipped during battle)

Also as a SMN you can choose to have Ginger Cookie (+5 mp regen while healing; last 3 mins; sells for 2k a stack (99) on fenrir ) as ur food, which I must say is quite nice. The Ginger Cookie decreases down time, leading to faster chains.

I find it odd that this is named after the 2nd man in charge of the third riech and leader of the **** SS "H.Himmel" and the staff he had in his latter years of his life. Odd but yet intriguing. Still nice staff sells for about 150k+ on fairy

Well no i am NOT wrong yes it was his name YES he did use a staff!! now if SE wanted to name sky staff then wtf?! why not name it sky staff then?! why not make some hand itmes and name it hitler bangles if hitler name means glorius (being sarcastic, though i dont know if his name means anything) and bangles are bracelts for an another item? all im saying is that they should be careful on what they name items. Because someone might take offense to it is all.

I hate Politically correct thugs. I mean u do know this is final fantasy right? A fantasy roleplaying game in a kind of pre-industrial magical world. I mean do you freak out when u see the swastica on the JP macros too?

I mean how dumb and warped is it that given the name Himmel stock, you naturally assume it was named after a **** by the same name 0_0. Himmel its not like a super duper rare german name.

Now when they release a weapon called the N______r beating club, then i will back you totally in desire for a name change.

Actually, youre both wrong. Its possibly worth some debate as to *who* exactly was Hitlers second in command - power and position are not always synonymous. I would say the three main contenders were probably Goring, Hess and Himmler. It sounds to me like youre mixing up some Hess (deputy Fuhrer until 1941) with Himmler (leader of the SS). Certainly, it could be understandable to mistake Himmlers name, but Hess (1894 - 1987) was the only one of the three to grow old enough to warrant using a staff ^^;

The only Himmel i can think of it being named after would be the German word for sky, or failing that, Friedrich Heinrich Himmel (1765 - 1814), the classical composer.

I hear a lot of ppl say Regen like it is its own word (Ree-gen) but it short for "Regeneration"
It is a throw back to old school FF when they could only fit a few letters of the spell (Fir2 anyone? ;P) as such I believe it is pronounced Ree-jen and is not all that German

I'm 58SMN and I can say with all honesty Austere gear has it's uses, and then again those uses are very limited.

The only thing I miss about some of the pieces are the Skill boosts to summoning magic. You will not find those boosts in anything else except the summoner's horn, which greatly outperforms the austere hat. However, I had the full austere set, and here's my opinion on that.

I would use it until you get your AF to replace it, because you really won't miss anything the austere gives you. Not even the pact reduction time. I also used to carry all 8 staves, I don't anymore. I sold 6 of them and put them to better use to pad money for more useful things, like vermllion cloak and a serket ring. I don't miss the lowered avatar cost, since I don't really keep any avatars out to melee other than Fenrir (for his highest melee damage). A refresh more than makes up for all of it, and most of the time I static party with a bard and rdm at the same time. I keep a light staff for when I need to be the backup healer, of course, or just to tote carbie around.
Yeah!
# Jul 11 2004 at 11:34 PM Rating: Default
And by the time you're level 40 to use this staff, you would only get 43 MP more than AF, like you said. At level 40, 43 MP isn't all that much for a smn. RDM refresh would keep that up and with the naturally high smn MP anyway, you won't miss it. The AF staff doesn't have any drawbacks either. Freezer=Owned

umm...
# Jul 11 2004 at 10:03 PM Rating: Good
First off, he didn't say the staff sucks. He said Blood Pact delay +3 sucks, which is pretty much beyond argument, as the single biggest drawback to the SMN job is the blood pact timer.

2nd, he clearly said "up to you if the 63 mp is worth it." That pretty much nullifies your entire argument agaisnt him, as he already stated what you did.

Lastly, I don't believe I have EVER heard a single person anywhere say "Austere Armor sucks."

Austere doesn't rival SMN AF, it makes SMN AF look like a rediculously bad joke.

I disagree about Austere Vs AF - i was curious about this recently so i actually compared a full set of both to one another. These are the stats:

Auster Armor Set (level 50)
================

Def: 76
MP: +33
VIT: -1
AGI: 0
INT: +2
MND: +2
CHR: -6
Summoning: +10
Blood Pact: 54
Perpetuation: -1
Enmity: -3
Evasion: 0
Avatar Elemental Resistance: 0

AF Armor (levels 52, 54, 56, 58, 60)
========

Def: 96
MP: +80
VIT: +4
AGI: +5
INT: +3
MND: +3
CHR: 0
Summoning: +5
Blood Pact: 60
Perpetuation: 0
Enmity: -11
Evasion: +10
Avatar Elemental Resistance: 20
Enhances Avatar Evasion
Occasionally converts damage taken to avatar to MP
Enhances Avatar accuracy

And these are the differences (comparing AF to Austere):

Def: +20
MP: +47
VIT: +5
AGI: +5
INT: +1
MND: +1
CHR: +6
Summoning: -5
Blood Pact: +6 seconds
Perpetuation: +1mp
Enmity: -8
Evasion: +10
Avatar Elemental Resistance: +20
+Enhances Avatar Evasion
+Occasionally converts damage taken to avatar to MP
+Enhances Avatar accuracy

In all these stat differences, AF comes out clearly on top except in 4 areas. Now, I realise that not all areas are of equal importance, but bear with me on this one:

Summoning Skill: Austere gets 5 extra points on the whole set. This is a clear advantage, although exactly *how* worthwhile it is is debatable. Considering that no one has yet been able to put forth an argument that is very convincing on what exactly the summoning skill actually *does*, its hard to say how good this is. Surely if it had a big impact on something like avatar HP or damage, it would be quite easy to work out what it does. And i know that SE have said that it only affects summoning speed and interruption rate, and i have difficulty believing that too. My guess is that it affects all the stats a little bit. 5 points is not a big deal, in my opinion.

Blood Pact: In full AF, the blood pact timer is 6 seconds higher than full Austere. This is quite clearly a big advantage. It means you get blood pacts 10% faster, and therefore, 10% more of them per battle. In theory. Either way, its a really nice boost, but I wont lose sleep over it when i have AF.

Avatar Perpetuation Cost: To me, this one is the biggie. Ok, its not quite an elemental staff, but nonetheless, anything that brings down the cost of keeping avatars out is the business where im concerned. I have a hard time letting this go - the only defence the AF has against this is that in full AF you have 47MP more than full Austere. That means that the -1 perpetuation will not become wortwhile until your avatar has been out for 47 ticks. This is really quite a long time, but nonetheless - it cant be denied that this is a *nice* stat.

Charisma: This one is similar to Summoning Skill in terms of debate on what it actually *does*. Specifically, what it does to your enmity. Ive read a lot about it in relation to PLDs, and the general concensus seems to be that there is no conclusive evidence either way. In which case, at best, it cant affect enmity *that* much, or it would have been noticed. In any case, in terms of the *actual* enmity stat, with full AF, it goes down by 8 points more than full Austere. So, why is there so much CHR decreases on Austere gear? Its my guess that it does little or nothing to your enmity, but... well, have you *SEEN* the stuff? It makes you look like a tramp! Not very charismatic :) I reckon SE put the CHR deficit in to be in keeping with the look of the outfit.

Ok, these points aside, AF comes out on top in every area. Overall the extra 20 DEF, the 47 more MP, INT and MND +1 each, 10 extra evasion, 8 less enmity and avatar elemental resistence +20 defnitely push it for me. On top of that, you also get 'enhanced' avatar accuracy and evasion (doesnt say by how much!), and 'Occasionally converts damage taken to avatar to MP' - doesnt say how often or how much, but it certainly cant be *bad* :)

Anyway, to finish my argument, Id like to point out a couple of things: first of all, i did not take into account the AF weapons, because there is no Austere equivalent. Although it does seem odd to say that, considering im posting on the Himmel Stock thread, and this has nothing to do with it :) Maybe i should post in the SMN forum too...

Secondly, the Austere gear is all level 50, and so is certainly the best option for SMN, even if it is only for a few levels.

Finally, it might look a little strange, but there *is* of course another option - mixing and matching. Not entirely sure what Ill do about this when the time comes (about 10 levels), but this is clear to me: while the AF *overall* is better than Austere gear (imo), I would much prefer to have the Austere Robe over the Evokers Doublet, if just for the Avatar Perpetuation Cost -1... what I lose on that deal is 15 MP, 6 DEF, 3 MND and -2 enmity. In my opinion worth it just for the perpetuation -1, although the Blood Pact Delay -3 is always nice too ^^

In conclusion, I would certainly never venture that Austere Gear sucks - but I wouldnt personally choose it over SMN AF. Sorry about the long post.

Outstanding review of the two sets of gear. Thank you so very much!

As a SMN at 39, going on 75 ;) ... I see Auster Armor set clearly helping me get my AF gear set. It is a major improvement from not having any Avatar assistance gear (at least not up to lvl 39).

As for mixing the gear, yeah, sounds good and reasonable to try as your getting your AF gear to consider.

Lmao... that's 3 seconds, yes 63 seconds instead of 60 seconds between casts of Bloodpacts for +63 mp YOU(Psoleus) are obviosuly not a 'very bright' Summoner, because this is a good staff ( and my oppinion THEE staff to use) to use from lv 40 till 51 when you get elemental staffs

(though i never used it since i am now past level 51 summoner and have the Elemental Staffs for hidden stat -Avatar Perpetuation and the +10 mp while healing Dark Staff which would gimp the +63mp from the staff or i would be using it myself^^)

compared to the AF1 staff +20mp this has 63mp 43 more then the AF1 which you get at lv41 thru the AF1 quest, if you have the gil, this is the staff to get, which you should since you probably have another high level job for farming/HNM hunting ETC. that most Summoner's have

you are just one of the petty people you go saying that things suck, like Austere Armor (which rivals AF armor for usefullness) only because you don't have the gil to get it

Sorry all --flame over ^^
