At lvl 73, i would rather go for balins than balmung firstly as Balin has a higher Dmg, and also because as previously mentioned Spinning slash is boosted by +str and +int.

At this lvl most DRK also use O-hat and the thick-set also gives a lot of accuracy. The +5acc on Balmung is therefore not needed as such anymore.

Absorb-DEX can also save you if you end up missing a fair bit in exp parties. Howver i just tend to macro in Mermans gorget, Life Belt, and Woodsmans rings for building TP, then warwolf belt, Spike Necklace and Ruby rings for the actual WS. Sure adds a bit of DMG..

Correct me if I'm wrong ^_~

Lakshmi server, this now goes for roughly 10-15k. That's down from 1.8 million less than six months ago.

How's that for deflation?

Eye of the Strom has 4 wyvrns, but The Scarlet King has only 1 manticore....

Sure I don't have to worry about needing this sword for a long while yet <56DRK/28WAR>, but I'd like to know for future reference

# Nov 14 2005 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
Yeah i dunno wich is harder, 4 wyverns or a manticore that can one-shot w a single tech..

I think it's neat how it seems to have a Dark Tower reference, too. Atropos and Lachesis were 2 of the "bald doctors" in Insomnia. I haven't finished reading it, but it seems Atropos is working for the Crimson King. Kinda funny. Not that King came up with those names anyway. Atropos, Lachesis, and Clotho were the Fates in Greek mythology. I love this game. ^^

Actually, you are all wrong. Tolkien was, among other things, and expert in Teutonic mythology and a student of the Icelandic language which is the language the original Teutonic myths were written in. These myths were compiled in a tome known as Snorra-Edda, written by a man named Snorri Sturluson in the late 13th century. In one part of this compilation, the names of the dwarves in the Teutonic mythology are recited. Among these names are, Throin, Thorarinn, Bifur, Bombur, Gimli, Gloinn, Oinn, Gandalfr (not a misprint, the r is there), Balin, and in fact, ALL of the dwarves mentioned in the Hobbit and LotR, along with other names.
So in fact, the origin of the name Balin is from Teutonic mythology, and very likely it migrated into the Arthurian legends, seeing as Teutonic mythology predates Arthurian legends my a number of centuries.
Note that, although the compilation is dated in the 13th century, the actual mythology is many centuries older.

Balin and Balan. Brothers, appearing first in the Suite du Merlin and later in Malory, who aid Arthur in his early struggles to gain and consolidate his power. The violent Balin beheads the Lady of the Lake in an act of family vengeance. He later kills a knight named Garlon, brother to Pellam, at Pellam's castle. Pellam is wounded by Balin with a lance in an attempt to avenge Garlon. The lance is the Dolorous Stroke or lance of Longinus (see: Bleeding Lance) that pierced the side of Christ. Pellam lies wounded for many years with his lands becoming waste, to be healed only by by the achiever of the Grail, the knight Galahad.

For his sacreligious use of the Holy Lance, Balin is doomed. He and Balan kill each other over a misunderstanding and are buried together. Merlin implants the sword of Balin in a block of marble where it stays until withdrawn by Galahad, proving his vocation as Grail-achiever.

This story is told by Mallory in Book II and an altered version appears in Tennyson's Idylls of the King.

Seem's pretty strange and interesting, can't wait until I can use this sword =D.

Thanks, nice research there, I love mythology and it's great to know where the names Balin and Balan came from.

The only balin that came to my mind was the Tolkien Balin ><;;

I submitted a picture of my Balin's to Allakazham, along with stats, when I couldnt find it in the Great Sword section.

It drops in both the Lachesis and Atropos orb BCNM Kindreds Seal battles for Chamber of Oracles.

Is a Rare type item, and the blade is black, with a dark red handle. Blade is the curvy type, just like Flamberge, the PLD only Great Sword.

some call it Balmung, with a red handle. But in actuality, Balmung's blade is not jet black, rather it is dark blue. (very dark blue)

I'll see if i can get a pic up for you guys

I'd go with Balin of Arthurian fame. Gwain's axe is an item and so is Excalibur...
Tolkiens work

Yes, you are right, it is more likely that Tolkien used the same reference since he was a professor of English literature at Cambridge University. He often made references to names in old English stories such as Beouwulf etc. In fact, he was one of the spearheads for bringing ancient English text to the forefront of our English literature classes. He translated a lot of stuff, and he was an expert on the subject, which is why he makes analogies to so many different ancient lore/mythos. I never knew about Balin, cousin of King Aurther, thats a new one for me, and I just got done doing a little bit of research about Aurther.

More than likely, this is Balin from the Arthurian legend.

For those who don't know, Balin is the cousin of King Arthur. His mother was killed by the Lady of the Lake, so he killed the Lady in turn. He went on to have a lot of nutty adventures, and was eventually killed by his brother, Balan. They were entombed together, and Merlin took Balin's sword and declared that no one but the greatest knight in all the world would ever wield it again. Lancelot took the sword, and wound up using it to kill Gawaine.

That's what I think of when I see this. But the whole Arthurian legend deal is probably more correct. I don't think Tolken's lore is very involved in the game.

I wouldn't say that. Tolkien is what made orcs, dwarves, elves and the like popular. The whole of FFXI was created because of Tolkien. I guarantee that if Tolkien didn't write The Lord of the Rings we wouldn't have a FFXI at all. I doubt this sword refers to Tolkien's Balin, though.

i would say that it is more than likely that Tolkein had used the refrence from teh legend of king arthur, just as nerf-enix is now. Eit her way, i am very impressed withthe research!
good

If i'm not mistaken Spinning Slash modifers are Str and Int (30%Str, 30%Int), which would make this a slightly better weapon for exp ptys then even balmung.
