NIN use
# Jul 10 2006 at 12:17 PM Rating: Decent
Just got this for my NIN. I've been accumulating DD gear recently, not to say that NIN is a DD role, but higher damage output means better hate control. With merited evasion and relatively high parrying ability, I can leave DD gear equipped for quite a while without taking a beating. Moreover, in my typical meriting PTs, mobs are dead (or aggroing a DD) before shadows are gone anyway, so I keep DD gear on full time, and get relatively good feedback (as opposed to NIN's with say, O-hat and S-harness - I use Hauby). Granted, this cursed item cost me almost 3.5 mil on Leviathan, but worth it in the long run.
got it

all i gotta say about this helm is its greater for monks, rather then ninja or samurai, samurai can wea r the Wyvren helm and most cases can just use teh O-hat for acc, and macro in wyvren helm for the Str, but this helm is still wonderful for the mix of both worlds of acc and str i give it a A+
shura helm
# Nov 03 2005 at 11:15 PM Rating: Decent
me and my shura helm. It's part of the "divine" set for Dryadic abjurations. I like the extra STR and ACC. It's like it combines the qualities of a snipers ring and a flame ring into one piece of equipment (sans elemental stuff). I also like how it has defense on it whereas optical does not. I also dislike the "look" of optical hat a lot - optical hat looks like something that a spooky girl witch on halloween would wear. As a SAM, I would rather wear a helmet that looks more manly kind of like a pseudo hockey helmet or NFL helmet. Oh yeah I play as gulka so HP-25 is nothing to me haha.
Recipie?

I randomly got a lucky lot on this Abjuration (979 ^^ free lot too, no points). Can't wait to get a divine log so I can throw this puppy on.

Edited because I'm a dumbass.

imo if you're a sam use this full time or not at all, if you have ohat then macro this in, just get a wyvern helm, same str added and you're not onloading tons and tons of cash for it.
:(

/cry. If only it looked cool.
Equip Macro Maybe?
# May 31 2005 at 8:30 AM Rating: Decent
For a SAM i would say the best would be O. Hat for TP build and macro in this with your STR macro which any SAM 60+ should have. I would just go with wyvren helm anyhow same STR and easier to get, the ACC dont matter if your SATAing anyhow

Last night the woodworker from my linkshell named Martinius HQ'd the cursed kabuto for our monk named Greffex.

I don't know if any NA monk has the shura zunari kabuto +1, but there can't be many.

So if you're on Alexander Server check out Greffex!
Losses.

As a monk i wouldnt care if this thing had -100 HP it is still awesome. And for some reason people think the 5 str doesnt out weigh the 5 accuracy lost from optical hat...well if you need that extra 5 accuracy at 73+ i would say you suck. :(

Uhh... +5 Str is more valuable to a Mnk. At the expense of 5 Acc trade off from not using Optical hat, I'd say its worth it.

*sigh* ....there's a reason the Samurai artifact set gives +7 enmity...right under the Paladin's artifact bonus of a whopping 8. It's so you can tank. And trust me, when you get to the levels where you can understand these things, you'll know that it works far better than you think right now. On Ifrit server, I can name several 67+ Samurai that can hold their own against Steelshells and Darters in the Boyhada Tree, which isn't hard with AF gloves, a Tonosama rice ball, and a warrior sub (which a Samurai better have anyway).

+Enmity sticks more hate on whoever you trick onto. Also, most of SAM's WS are single hit, thus SE's intention was probably for SAM's to sub thief and close skillchains being a SAM/THF.

SAM/WAR is still a great way to go depending on your party setup, but based on the WS and AF choice, that's what I can get out of it.

All I can say is I have 2 Lv75 character's and have been playing this game for year's, and so far I have yet to see a Sam tank anything outside of Dunes/Qufim/Kazham. Today during Kirin I watched a Sam go from full HP to nothing befor he could even move.

Sam's can tank, for 1 hit only, unless there Nin sub in which case I'd be like "Wtf!?!?" DD:O Tank:X

I have a buddy on my server that has special equip just for tanking. Hes only tanks in a ton BCNMs and NMs, not hnms lol. Besides do you think a pld would be that good at tanking if he had all attacking equip on?

THANK YOU. It really is sad how poor most NA have of a understanding of this game, PLD, WAR, MNK, and SAM where ALL ment to be tanks while NIN was ment to be a DD only. This has since changed in terms of NIN and SE is finally understanding that fact by giving NIN actual tank gear, but SE continues to put out tanking gear for SAM and MNK for a reason, it WANTS people to still use them as tanks.

Just because most people cant think outside of the box doenst mean you cant still use the job in other ways. I still tank all the time at 60 as a mnk. Its not hard as long as you take the right mobs and have the right equips and our AF was MADE to tank.

Keep in mind, too, that the best tank depends on the situation. For slow, hard-hitting mobs, a Nin can be the best, since Utsusemi will nullify most of what they do. Against a Mnk, however... Nins die fast, but Monks do fantastic. With the countering (more hits taken means more hits dealt), and the high damage, it takes some work to steal the hate. (Not to be tried without a good healer, because they'll be doing the same back at you.) Against a magic user, you'll definitely want a Pld, because of the higher defense, and the ability to self-cure. (And the fact that neither shadows or countering will do much.)

Ideally, you'll choose your tank to counter the strengths of what you're fighting.

Ok 1 i am a 75 sam, so this is coming from experience not what i happen to see around. SAM is not a tank, NIN was never supposed to be a damage dealer they where ment to be a debuff job thats why they have debuff ability's, there dmg sucks. i have many 75 nin friends that tank with DD gear on and his Dmg still sucks. and as far as sam being a tank its not a tank, I have lower def then a whm and blm my lvl and i am elvaan with great gear. and to compare tanking ability i always /war in exp as any good sam would. good being the key word. i only /thf on gods and HNM, when any good sam should sub thf. If anyone has a dispute on lakshmi hit me up we will compare overall dmg. OK and to the point again SAMs ARE NOT TANKS... golem hit me for around 300-350 a hit with /war and defender up, i know i have tried to pull them it doesn't work too well. If you see a sam tank slap him he is playing job wrong. Also for people that want to use that AF has enimity on it. my AF helm has mnd on it does that mean i am a healer and for the person that posted that the enimity is for SATA hate, Sam came out in zilart which also raised the lvl cap from 50-75 SATA wasn't used DD yet. Every part of AF has a purpose and until SE release in there own words why they put that on there do not make up your own conclusion and post it like its fact, and oh yea if i forgot to mention SAMs ARE NOT TANKS. And as far as this peace of gear posted on it's really nice, get one and MACRO it in to WS. for people that fight over O-hat and this helm. Yours <Too Weak> acc/atk between WS ,macro in STR to WS. and for anyone that wants to say well i suck, beat 7816 dmg off a 2hr and i will seriously consider what your doing.

Just because you personally cannot tank doesn't mean that others can't. Tanking requires certain skills and mindsets as well as a thorough understanding of the defensive stats in the game and what your personal job excels in, whatever job that may be. A SAM tank should rely on VIT, AGI, def, HP, and parrying as well as having quick reflexes for skilled use of 3rd eye to stop single target mob TP attacks (I saw a JP SAM tank that used 3rd eye everytime that "mobx readies SingletargetTPattackx" and he blocked a lot of them. I would imagine this requires an excellent ping time). The SAM will likely take more damage than a PLD or NIN but they will be setting up more SC's than either of those jobs, meaning that you should make sure to load some BLMs into the PT.

I've seen good SAM tanks.
I've seen good DRK tanks.
I've seen good MNK tanks.

But in all cases those were skilled players who understood the game mechanics (had fully levelled tanking jobs as well) and stats, and how to make best use of their jobs strengths and weaknesses. You can't just invite some casual SAM, MNK, or DRK and ask them to tank, it just won't work like that. (Btw DRK tank was pretty neat because they have access to most of the same armor that PLD can wear, and drain and the absorb spells they were doing generated quite a bit of hate. With defender up he still did great damage but took surprisingly little, which was good since the only healer in the pt was a SMN)

Sure, SAM can't tank with a normal melee/DD gear setup. -However-, with the proper defensive gear macro'd in and very specific party setups and mob choices, SAM can tank to a limited extent. At 67-68, I tanked in Bibiki Bay with a SAM, SAM, WHM, RDM, BLM, BLM party. Wasn't the best party I've ever had, but we pulled a consistent 4.5-5k an hour.

I'd recommend you take a better look at what is out there before you jump to conclusions. Arhat's body and headpiece give you -10% damage reduction (15% if you go for the +1 versions). Toss in AF legs, feet, and hands, and items like Parrying Torque/Parrying Earring, and you'll notice that SAM isn't as weak as you think it is. I was never in grave danger of dying, I even started swapping in more and more of my DD gear since our WHM was always fine with MP.

Any stupid melee job with /war can provoke and tank the quality of the tank is what matters. If you would have taken the extra time to find a nin or pld. which is a job that is tank. Let me know when you hit 75 and try to pull a golem let me know if you make it to camp. Sams are not tanks again.
RE: DD gear
# Jan 06 2006 at 1:37 AM Rating: Decent
First off, get off the "OMG you dun have a 75 job so you dun know" bus, it's full of kids that ate way too many paint chips growing up. Your lvl has little to do with how well you know your job, and the same goes for rank.

Back on the subject, SE even released that they intended for sam to be a tanking class, on the basis that you can sub war and SC alot to maintain hate. Learn equipment and how it works in all aspects before you start bashing someone else. A sam can gear to tank in a xp party very easily.

While I'm at it, the best job for maintaing hate is a war/mnk, hands down. Somewhere between the dmg, abilities on tap nearly all the time, counter, and ungodly VIT, they do a damn good job. The tank staying alive is the whm's job, not the tanks, just because pld and nin can help the whm out doesn't mean they are the only two tanking classes. Infact nin was never meant to be a tank, seeing as they can't hold hate off of any of the big hitters w/o a thf, or a /thf post 60.

So you couldn't take a hit in DD gear, seems par for the course if you ask me.

Think outside the box? How do you think ninjas became tanks? Holy crap, you know what? If you ninjas sub warrior, the whm can save a ton of mp and we don't have to sit around all day every 2-3 fights waiting on mp to refresh.... And I don't care what people say a ninja can do for DD with things like +int gear and blm sub or +str and +attk gear and whatever else, mnk or sam DD > ninja DD anyday (unless you just suck). The day you see me DDing while the Mnk or Sam tanks is the day that someone has just bought my account on ebay.

MNK was designed to be tank, huh? I see, so that's why our AF2 has >>MINUS<< enmity, right? ~.~ The only way for MNK to tank is with Counterstance, and even that's risky if you don't have Counter+ gear.

OK, so this is why SE keeps ******** us with crap gear that gives VIT. When are they going to understand that no matter how they intended it, MNK is a DD. Maybe when they finally realize this, they'll give us something useful, like some -enmity gear (lord knows i need it).

Not knockin you for how you want to play, if you have fun tanking, by all means go for it man. I just see it IMO as a waste of a MNK's abilties.

so -25 HP for +5 acc and +5 str is not "almost acceptable" its MORE THAN acceptable...
