Okay, so I leveled THF from 1 to 15 tonight for farming purposes, and I decided I'd bring in my Aspir Knife I got a loooong time ago to try it out. Well, I wish I didn't, because it's HORRIBLE. Crappy DMG, longer delay than Brass Knife, and the MP Absorption hardly works anyway. I dropped it because it's was completely useless to me.
I don't recommend this knife to anyone really, but you're welcome to give it a shot yourself.

Yeah, I've had bad luck with this weapon, too. I've been using it as a 12THF/WHM to help keep HP up and give me a bit more MP, but with my luck, it keeps activating on mobs that don't have MP, and doesn't do anything to mobs that actually do have MP, and on the off-chance it actually does activate on an enemy with MP... I have full MP anyway. Arrgh!
It might be useful if you have this as well as, say, the blind dagger. At least that way you can still blind enemies that don't have MP anyway.

The Aspir effect rarely goes off. It's just not worth it. It's a mission item and should be left as one -- don't waste your time. I imagine the Lilith's Rod effect goes off so often because it's a LV50 club. If the Aspir Knife's effect happened more than once in a blue moon, it would be well worth the slot it takes up...

As explained previously, Aspir Knife does in fact drain MP from mobs but the mob has to ~have~ MP to drain it. Kinda like how you can cast the actual spell, Aspir, on a mob that has no mp. The spell can still be casted, just you don't get MP for it. Here's an awesome piccie I took (c'mon, I think I did a good job) capturing how the actual Aspir drain effect looks. people keep saying it would be great for a low level rdm, i agree, but IT CAN'T BE EQUIPED BY A RDM, unless rdm is the subjob to something else.
I could see this being useful for a BRD/WHM fighting crabs in Valkurm. Short of that, I can't see any real use.

I can confirm that this knife does give the weilder the mp that it drains from mobs that have mp. I was harvesting in Giddeus as a 23rd Dragoon/Red Mage, and saw Mr Ironbreaker. Killed him, then used up all but 20 of my MP. Went around killing worms and caster yagudo until the effect went off: Villanova drains 7 MP from the Earth Eater! and my MP wen from 20 to 27.
So to all of you that say it doesn't work, you're either wrong, or it was bugged when you tried it and they fixed it.

It isn't that great of a weapon (seeing as how the mage classes can't use it). It is an automatic drop, and is part of the Bastok Mission 2-3 (if you go to Windy first, and then Sandy) .

just an idea... DRK/NIN might have some fun with aspir knives.

You can ONLY drain MP from mobs that have it in the first place e.g Crabs, Beetles, Elementals and Beastmen Paladin/Red Mage/White Mage/Summoner/Dark Knight.

I have 2 of the knoves and I can say that it does not drop EVERY time, but it is a really common drop. After reading the posts I'll prob dump mine, cuz I was under the belief that 1.) was for a quest in Bastok, and 2.) thought the MP drained was given to you.... How disappointing. Sooo, seeing as I"m from Sandy and Rank 4, I really have no use for it. Sux, cuz it could have lower lvl potential...

i was leveling my thf in giddeous when i found this pseudo NM completely alone, so i decided to chain to my main rdm and come to kill it, after feeling completely frustrated of spini spipi being overcamped, when i get back, its still there (or already respawned) so i kill it quick and get the knife on first trial! ^_^U i am wondering, do any of u know how much does it sell for?

I used this knife last night. It did the MP drain effect only four times in three hours; once when I did a weapon skill, the rest of the time at random. I think 8 MP was the maximum drained; it drained 0 one time too.
Does anyone know what, if anything, triggers the Aspir effect?
And it's a total crime that RDMs can't use this weapon, but they can use other knives and daggers. S-E should change this.

My only use for this thing would be draining MP from BLack Mage mobs that cast Ancient magic or something like in BCNM when you have to Aspir the monster lots so he has no mp to cast sleepga and so on.
I have had this Dagger for about two weeks. I love it and use it every chance I get as I solo both my thief and warrior jobs.
It may not do as much damage as my sapara right off the bat but it is great for my soloing. (Note: it may not be great for yours but I don't play reckless).
The only thing I did notice (because I sub WHM when I solo) is that when it does take the MP I dont get it. Where does it go? Time for more research I think.

That seems a bit odd, all weapons with the HP Drain effect give you hp.... if it didn't drain it, then it would probably say that it damages the mp... I wouldn't really know though, the only time I used this for was with my brd in the dunes and there's not a whole lot of fighting time for brds and everytime the effect went off, I somehow managed to ahve full mp or the mob didn't have any...

They are used for a mission, not a quest. If you are from Bastok or San d'Oria and are doing mission 2-3, you have to visit both of the other two main cities and prove your mettle there. Whichever city you decide to visit second, you fight the dragon of that area. If you decide to visit Windurst first, then you have to go to Giddeus and defeat the named monsters who drop the aspir knife and parana shield.
If you are from Windurst to begin with, or visit Windurst second while on this mission from Bastok or San d'Oria, the items are utterly useless, except for regular weapon/armor use.

Ex items can be sold to NPCs, which is what I believe he was talking about. It doesn't sell for enough to make it worth camping, though.

{Excuse me...} but RDM can't use this weapon... And even with RDM as support job to enhance the knife will not be worthwhile... Think about it... 32???/16RDM with a level 12 weapon of 5 DMG in hand to do damage... {I'm sorry.} to disappoint you...
And it "might" be good for people with mage as support job but still... I don't think anyone will sacrife damage for the effect except PLD/???, BRD/mage and RNG/mage (I don't see the last one too often...) for *example.

I was using it as THF/WHM ok. I wasn't even trying to get it. I was just dinking around killing things that are easy, and so rested and this mob pops and aggroes me. I killed it and it droped this thing. At first I was excited to sell it, but then I found out I can't. ;-; Anywho, the main draw-back is that it can only drain from mobs that are magic users. ><

lol just unlucky i'm 4 for 4 on this and only reason i found it is because i was lost LOL.
well i got it like 5 times in a row i camped this thing for like 30 mins yes thats all it took well it drops every time off of i think his name is Zuu buxu the iron breaker and the pihrana sheilds come off of Zuu buxu the silent well they finaly took me down but it took like 10 of those birds well im lvl 22 RDM so i cant use the knife ;_; oh well and good luck

you guys keep saying that it'sa common drop and all, and i've yet to officially test this theory out, but when i was getting my kazham key in giddeus, a level 75 jap monk was helping me out and he told me that the NM's here drop the Parana Shield/Aspir Knife everytime. Either way, i've only killed the NM once so i'm not positive on this. On a side note, this item is pretty stupid, probably only useful for brd/whm or nin/rdm.

Its damage is low (compared to regular knives) and the aspir rate rare for main weapon.
Not to mention that the classes who can equip this could probly carry more effective weapons.
(unless your ninja sub mage, and this is your second knife)

I would have to say this knife has to be the easiest to obtain off an NM b/c of the following reasons:
1. The NM involves a Mission.
2. The NM spawns very shortly after the first kill.
3. I just might have been really lucky.
Well anyway I must say this knife is great with a thief subbing a mage such as White Mage, Black Mage (Great for pulling if you don't like paying for arrows.), or Red Mage. Though you can't sell it on AH, you can sell it to a merchant.

I was walking through Gidddeus the other day looking for the way back to the Yaugdo that drop the key for the kazham pass. I ran across 2 ninja Yaugdo. The first one dropped a shield. Hmm can't remember the name of it exactly(will look it up when I get home) but it is def 2 +4 ice def lvl 9 wearable by most shield wearing classes. The second yaugdo dropped this dagger. Seems like each ninja drops a exclusive item and it seems they have a fairly high drop rate as i got both items first kill.

This knife MAY be used in Mission Six. If you are from Bastok or San d'Oria and you travel to Windurst first, you will need to get this knife to complete your mission.

You didn't listen to what he said. If you go to Windurst first, then it may be part of the quest. You only fight the dragon in the 2nd city you go to. Moron.
Just got this knife lastnite...
I was a lv 17RDM/WAR with a lv19 BLM/WHM. The mob is quite easy to kill (though the first 3 hits are 0 dmg), we manage to kill it with 2 other Yagudo (1 piper and 1 med) together. The drop rate is high (statictistally 100%). IT spwans about 15 min and we kill it twice and got 1 each.
I will try to use it later...

Just wonder if this knife does actual dmg then converts the dmg to MP for the player, or it just drains the MP form the MOB to the player (and no dmg to MOB's HP)?
I does normal damage, and then sometimes, as a side effect, drains a little MP, too. It's just like any other additional effect on a weapon. The amount of MP drained does not depend on the amount of normal damage dealt; it's two seperate factors completely.

See the little EX in the picture? That means Exclusive. In other words, it cannot be traded, sent to anyone, or bought/sold/auctioned (to other players). It CAN be sold to NPCs, such as the item-seller guy at your country's outposts.
As stated below, because its for bastok mission (6?), so it's to prevent people from just having another char hand them the item to complete the mission.

This knife is used for the Bastok Mission for rank 3. If you go to Windurst for part 1 of the mission, you need to get this knife and give it to the Yagudo who stands in front of the doors nearby.

Yes, you're both right. Whether you want to refer to it as the Bastok "Rank 3 mission" or Bastok "Mission 2-3" it's the same thing. It's the mission out of Bastok titled The Emissary which grants you Rank 3 status.

Shame it can't be used for RDMs. Guess it might be OK for BRD/WHM or BRD/RDM I guess.

it's too bad this weapon is useless if you're a mage as your main. Would love to see it opened up to BLMs, WHMs, SUMs, and RDMs
Since it's not already noted, the Aspir Knife drains MP from the enemy and gives it to you. Also, it's dropped from Eyy Mon the Ironbreaker, the Yagudo Ninja in Geddius. (Windurst)
I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.
