Finaly got it after over 2 years. I killed BB once with it then tried to trade when i first got the knife and got nothing. I tried on every other BB fight but never had any luck.
The time I got it I killed BB again with the same knife. Then fumbled around to get the knife into my inventory to trade (took me some time to do that while running to the ???, maybe 6-8 seconds till trade) and got it.
A Brd was also trying right after BB was killed and didn't get it.
Maybe it's really only luck but I think you might have to kill BB with it once to be able to get the knife. For the trading it doesn't seem to have to be right after BB was killed.
Maybe it works like the Kirin teleport and you got to trade it at the right time?
EDIT: btw Dnc can use this knife too ^^

I got my knife today. SAM/THF stole the knife and gave it to one of our NINs. NIN made the kill, and gave me it (a SMN, but I have several jobs at 75 that can use it so before anyone frets... it's going to use). This was probably my 7th attempt -- that is, 7th knife -- trying to transform it, and it finally worked. So I guess it doesn't really matter who makes the kill or anything, just that it either transforms on the first trade or won't transform, period.
...or perhaps, it's the luck of the guy with the glowing blue rat.

we went in to kill BB and the drk and i had curtana's, he traded his and spawned BB. i was there as RDM/NIN (other job is THF75) and he was DRK/THF. i came with a bucc. knife from a previous kill.
anyways during the fight the drk/thf stole a new bucc knife from BB and got the kill, as soon as it died i spammed the ??? with my old bucc knife from a previous kill and it did nothing, then the drk walked up and tried his knife and got the barty knife on his first try ~.~;;
so.. either 1. the person who stole the knife must trade to the ???
or 2. the person who made the kill must trade to the ???
or 3. i am just incredibly unlucky
hope this helps any barty knife hopefuls (im still working on mine)
and btw it was within ~1 min of the kill, definately MORE than 15 seconds before he tried trading his knife

Well the whole you have to trade with in 15 seconds is wrong or I got lucky. I traded the knife to the ??? around 1 minute after we killed BB on my 1st try and got knife. Also I have never failed a steal and I only have Brt knife with + steal. Well that is how I got it the knife.
After 2 LS's and about 15 kills of BB we finally got the damn knife. Our THF about crapped himself. Steal+2, yay.

Ok, I got my bart knife today after at least 10 trys. thought I'd come here and confirm a few things.
First, I got my knife with an old Buccaneer's knife, that I had already killed BB with one run before.
I tried trading it before the fight and nothing, after the fight (I made final blow) I tried again and got the messege I cannot obtain the bart knife, sort your inventory.
Dropped a crystal and traded again and it worked.
Note I did trade within 15 seconds and I did not read the text by checking the ??? before the trade.

ok, i just got this knife like 2 hours ago, and i figured i'd clear up and misconceptions about it. first off, the way u get it is by trading the buccaneer's knife to a ??? on the opposite side of the room that u pop the weapon. u obtain the bucaneers knife by stealing it from the weapon, and this weapon can only be killed with this knife. during the fight, the add. effect of buccaneers knife is 100%, sadly, the bart.'s knife isnt =( after u kill the weapon, u have to trade the knife to the ??? in less then 15 seconds, it has NOTHING to do with luck, merely timing.
the fight for my HNMLS was fun, i stole knife and died from AoE, raised, died again from damn AoE (he SPAMS AoE), melee got him to 1%, raised me, i sneak attacked to finish him. fled back to ??? hit macro to unequip dagger and traded it about 6 seconds after death and obtained knife.
while the knife's add. affect isnt as often as the buccaneers, is a LOT more powerful, after the fight i went to go fight sum flamingos and add. effect was hitting for 30-40 dmg, it was pretty friggin sweet. imma try it in EXP pt tomorrow.

this is actually untrue. i fought BB right next to the other ??? so we didnt have to clear the room. i have a macro that basically equips a different dagger and trades the buccaneer with <st> i tab over, hit enter, nothing. about 2 seconds after death... sorry =\
also sat there n spammed trade on it for 10 minutes or so while the other weapons were respawning, still nothing

So do you have to kill BB before you can trade it to the ???. I was in an HNMLS and never got the chance to be the one to deliver the final blow, but I have the Bucc. Knife. This would suck royally if I had to find another HNMLS just to kill it and get the Bart. Knife.

Here's how I go mine:
Went 1/6 on him. On the try I got it, I did not pop BB. I failed steal, a DRK stole it, gave me the knife, I killed BB. Afterwards, I ran over, traded the knife, first trade I got "The Buccannear's knife begins to change shape. Obtained: Bartholomew's Knife." It was 62% earthsday around 17:00 or so game time, if anyone is wondering. It seems to me and other THFs I talked to, it's just chance. Steal the knife, trade, and hope you get the knife. If not, well, try again next time.

I'm 0/16 on this with 16 different bucc knives. I think it is all luck when trading it. I've heard chances are better if you trade the curtana, successfully steal the bucc knife, and kill BB with sata but I was 0/3 last night with that strategy. Chances of stealing the knife are usually good, I have failed about 5-7 times.

I've killed BB at least 15 times with my LS and I've never failed the steal; also never seen any thf not get the knife on the first try. Is it possible that you're taking longer than the time limit?

Okay, here's a question. Since this knife is an upgrade to the Buccaneer's Knife, can it be used to kill BB as well, or is the Buccaneer's Knife the only weapon that can?

I got Bartholomew's knife under the impression it would kill BB just like buc knife. I'd been told ppl from my LS a while ago had used bartholomew knife to kill it... anyhow...
Long story short, it didnt work.
Had to have our nin sit there and tank BB for 25 minutes while someone else warped back to get a buc knife from mog safe.
The water damage was proc'ing for 0's. Maybe there's a trick. Maybe hafta be thief, I dont know. I was using it on ranger. Either way, it didnt kill BB.

I simply planned ahead by making 2 macros.
One macro to unequip the Buccaneer Knife:
/equip main "Hoplites Harpe"
One macro to trade the Buccaneer's Knife to the ??? after I killed BB:

After killing BB I simply hit my unequip macro, targetted the ??? and spammed my trade macro. Somewhere amid my spam error messages I got the message:
The Buccaneer's Knife begins to change shape.
Obtained: Bartholomew's Knife.

i dont understand, is the steal very difficult that you need to try multiple times ?
also does the ??? fade away so quickly that you need a macro ?

Steal is very easy for a drk or thf with full AF
the reason everyone hauls ass to the ??? is because if u do not trade it after 15 seconds from the death of BB, u dont get knife XD

First you have to be able to Equip the Buccaneer's Knife and Kill Brandishing Blade with it.
After the fighe Go tto the ??? at the front of the room and examine it with the Buccaneer's Knife still equiped.
Read the story.
Unequip the Buccaneer's Knife and trade it to the same ???.
Works every Time.

didnt work for me
I got this the first time I ever killed BB. I didn not pop him, I did not get the kill on him. I did steal the knife from him; traded it to a rng (I was only level 70 at the time) Rng killed him, I got the knife back from the rng, ran the the ??? and traded it. Got my knife.

On every other "additional effect" weapon I've seen "additional effect" actually means "once in a blue moon" It's other stats are below average save for the +2 Steal and that's only good for farming. Unless the additional effect goes off a lot (as in "more often than not") I can't imagine using this for anything except farming coins.

Additional affect on Acid/bloody/sleep bolts goes off almost every time unless the mob is resistant to the status affect. Most rare weps with additional effects that i have seen go off a lot more often then regular ones, like nadrs for example poisons the mob usually within a few hits.
It procs a hell of a lot.

I got the knife yesterday, I killed 3 BB's with the same knife. I waited about 20-25 seconds after a BB kill to trade my knife the time I got it, so duration between the kill and the trade is not extremely important. I think it may require X amount of BB's killed, traded within X time, and other randomy factors. The only way to realy get it is to trade each time after you kill BB, seems the best way.
The reason this knife is good, is the extra water effect does 60-69 regardless of mobs str. So if bartholomews does 80 dmg on a sauromogue skink, but 2 dmg on Aura statues, the water will still do 60-69. Pretty nice, the other stats are decent as well.

Ok well the deal with getting this knife is that you have to fight right beside where the ??? spawns, then directly after you hit the mob the last time use an unequip macro and run over and pop open the trade menu and trade the bucaneers knife to the ???. It is actually possible to do this trade within 2 seconds if you have skill, but even if you do it within its' 'time limit' there is still a random chance of not recieving it. I myself tried 5 unsuccessful times, two of which i traded within 2 seconds.

It is actually possible to do this trade within 2 seconds if you have skill, but even if you do it within its' 'time limit' there is still a random chance of not recieving it. I myself tried 5 unsuccessful times, two of which i traded within 2 seconds.

How exactally do you trigger this? I have stole the Buccaneer's Knife from BB but when I went to trade it back to the ??? nothing happened. I've read the pirate's story first and then tried trading it as well and got the same result. Is the same person who spawned BB with the curtana the only one who can trade the knife?

I saw the stats for this knife before, but it never had +2 steal! That makes it even better!
On another note, it seems a bit impractical for it to be for anyone but thieves. You got to get to 71, fight a high notorious monster, successfully steal from it, then trade the first knife for this one. Having both thief, And another job at 71 seems like a big time sink to me. But if you do have all that time, more power to ya!

I think its pretty this STEAL +2 item is for lv71s. The time you need Steal more then ever is lv 70 when your raising your lv cap against Maat. Kinda cruel.

Bartholomew was not a pirate. Rather he was a Catholic Saint. In a picture called the last judgement he is shown holding a knife. now how this relates to the +2 steal effect idk. but this was the only info i could fint on Bart's knife. You know i like the fact that some weapons in the ame have some history behind thier names. Ex: Siroco Kirki. well this ends my 1st thread ever on this mofo
i guess today was me lucky day beacause my ls went to get gem from BB mnk poped nm and i stole with no AF gear on, just my tp gear. after fight i took my time walking to ??? i was clumsy and messed up on trade but i traded it and then i got bar.knife 1/1 ^_^
