Currently @ level 30 Blacksmithing, and most of the synths at this level range involve using a steel ingot or sheet. Considering I've only ever had one HQ synth for steel ingot from Iron Ores this is proving to be an expensive area of levelling Smithing as I have to buy from AH. Stack of Steel Ingots currently going for 40 - 43k a stack on Remora.
Don't buy them from NPC's in Mhaura, the rip-off merchants are selling ONE ingot for over 19k!
This can also be obtained as an HQ2 of a Goblin's Helm. I was able to desynth 2 Steel Ingots, 5 Iron, and 6 Bronze from something like 25 Helms. Smithing is 14.4, facing south, 90% moon on Watersday.
Well I´ve seen that this happens to a lot of people so I´m not crazy. Crafted this while I was leveling my Smithing.
19 Smithing, Fireday, Northwest direction, not sure about moon though but it was NOT full moon.

My first thought was that it was a HQ of Iron Ingot and I was really exited about it (my first HQ) but when I checked here... well, since it is not in the recipes list... and I have never seen a HQ animation, didnt noticed anything different that time when I made it (no special or different animation).

If u guys hadnt relized but steel is iron just a more refined form origanally iron would wear away quickly it was a softer metal, so they found a way to heat the steel super hot so as to get all the oxygen out of iron thus creating a srtonger iron in turn called steel and thats why you dont see many cast iron pans or iron framed buildings its all steel cuz it stronger

I've made hundreds of iron ingots. I craft em up as I mine. I'm level 24 smithing. The other day, 12% waxing crecent, on lightsday, I crafted a steel ingot out of 4 iron ores and a Fire crystal.
Could this possibly be a HQ version of Iron ingot? A 98 Goldsmith, 60 Smithing, guy in my LS seems to think it was a mistake, a glitch.
What do you guys think?

I obtain my first Steel Ingot with 4 Iron Ore and a Fire Crystal, and when i do the synthesis, appears the HQ1 animation.

i was about lvl 19~20 and i HQed 4 iron ores into a steel ingot on somepage it lists as being a HQ1 to get a steel from this recipe http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/itemdb/3094
I agree, except i got HQ animation when it happened to me. I was mining (smithing lv 49) and trying to clear some space. I used 4 iron ores and a fire, HQ animation, and ding....steel ingot. I was like wtf and the other smithies in my ls were kinda baffled. I can confirm though....

This has happened to me and in my old smithing guides I have collected it does list the HQ is a Steel Ingot. However It might be higher then a HQ maybe a +2. As I've gotten HQ animation and no steel ingot also.

The recipe x4 iron sands + x4 bomb ashes isnt lvl 54, its lvl 50, i repeat ITS LVL 50, I couldve saved a lot of money on darksteel ores if I knew this since the beginning.
i made a steel ingot from goblin mail or armor (cant remeber) its nothing new. but i did it at smithing 25. just wanted to say its possible. this was on earth day^^
Although LemMminG's explanation was not very good, his is the most correct out of these posts. Although Shinoyuma does make a fair point that other metals are used to alloy steel, that does not make the steel. Steel is still to an overwhelming percentage iron, with a slight amount of carbon.
Steel is produced by manipulating the phases of iron in the product; this is mainly accomplished via control of temperature and amount of time spent at said temperature. Different types of phases present will yield a different type of steel.
Thus, one can logically conclude that as one becomes better with crystal synthesis, they can better control the process - and yield steel from iron.
not really.. steel aint a compund, steel is just iron, but without the impurities such as sillica or phosphorus, which is what makes iron weak.. it always has a different conecentration of carbon than iron to make it stronger..
Steel = iron.. there no zinc in it..

Actually, he is kind of right. There are literally thousands of variations of steel. Although it doesn't have to be made with zinc. It is true that steel is not a compound, but an alloy. It is a mixture of iron and carbon, zinc is sometimes added to help prevent rust.
Can anyone confirm that the recipe using 4xbomb ash and 4xIron Sand caps at 54 and not 50? 13 synths after dinging 50 with not even a .1 skillup. Thanks

I'm a 47 smith and i get these things all the time from gob armor, i think in the 300 some helms and mails i've deseynthed successfully i've gotten maybe 45% Steel ingots, so for those of you trying this at lower levels, don't fret, at 40+ this is a great way to make gil

try and click on the Mhaura. it takes you to an area map and lists the quests,mobs and items you can find in Mhaura. now go to items found. then steel ingot. it says "crafted & Fishing"
this receiphe is lightning crystal not light a light crystal is diferent and you cand desinth from a light crystal just from lighting crystals i am lvl 80 smithing and 50 leather with the helms and mails i get more gil than a whole week farming i also go farm the quadavs backplates i lose lots of the items all the time the desinth is not 100% secure i started when my smith was 10 and i have the same chances of lose an item at 80 than with 10 the thing that changes is the factor you get more and better items at higher levels for example i get 2 iron ingots and above almost all the time but sometimes i get 1 bronze ingot or sometimes 3 now you know all this i hope you dont come here and say bah this desinth doesnt work cause i lost the items or is not 100 secure i will tell you again NO is not 100% secure i lose 40% of the times i make them
While mining I craft my iron ore all the time to make ingots so I can stay and mine alot longer for the better items. Yes on occassion you will get a Steel ingot from the Iron Recipe. I just have to figure out the days that I make the steel ingots more. I tripped out the first time it happened cause I wasn't expecting it.
I just made a steel ingot from the iron ingot recipe and I'm a lvl 21 smither with lvl 25 goldsmithing. It was lightsday at 2:32 in Jeuno MH. Moon phase: Wanning Gibbous (62%). Anything else? Just ask.
I am curious.. Where do you find this is Mhaura? It says you can find it there.

I am 25 Blacksmith, and usually get Iron Ingot, but I must have gotten a +1 synth because I got Steel Ingot once by using the usual Iron Ingot recipe of: Fire + Iron Ore(x4). This has only happened once.
A Light Crystal and Goblin Helm do not Combine. A lighting crystal may be used with a Goblin Helm at a higher level, but when I try to use a Light Crystal on a Goblin Helm I get the message: Syntheses canceled. That combination of materials cannot be synthesized.
I saw a high lvl jap player making steel ingot. they all use lightning crystal. Here what I see. Lightning + quadav backplate Lightning + goblin helm Lightning + goblin mail
I think all those can make steel ingot. I should have take a screen shot for telling the true.
That isnt making, its desynthin! rippin it apart! Look.. LIGHTNING crystals are usuall desynth method.. especially for Smithing, and yes Steel Ingot as materials in Gob Helm & Mail is HQ, but desynth is very different, you can HQ them even below cap to make it.. like that 21 Smith above who made a Steel, Iron Ings only cap at 20 and he HQ them, it happens just not often. I did one on Windsay, 60% Gibb Last 1/4 moon facing West. So ill be doin that sum mur! Go bust some junk up in desynth check Mysterytour for good recipe/desynth lists.. this place dont cut it for that. Peace.

Whenever you craft a item. once in awhile you will craft an exceptional one. This is indicated by a +1 on weapons, armor, rings, earrings and some others like Potions. When you get an Exceptional Item while crafting Iron Ingot, it is a Steel Ingot. That is what was told to me by a Japanese Player.

Lightning crystal + Goblin Mail = 3x bronze ingots, or 2x iron ingots, or 1 steel ingot.
Lightning crystal + Goblin Helm = 1 bronze ingot, or 1 iron ingot, or 1 steel ingot
You'll get high fail rates on goblin mail/helm even if you have super high smithing. On the flipside, you'll get high HQ rates.
Steel ingot is also a HQ combine off an iron ingot craft.
