I think a LOT of people forget that almost all gear is SITUATIONAL, meaning that you dont pick one piece of gear per slot, and then never change it based on varying situations. As PLD, in certain levels, you will find yourself without a refresher in a good number of situations. This can create a LOT of downtime, BUT by loading up on dmg reduction gear and food, you will really help reduce that downtime since a lot less MP is being wasted. Now I"ll agree, +7 Vit doesnt do as much as it SOUNDS like it does, but it's still fantastic to get enmity +1 AND Vit +7 from one low delay, decent dmg sword. Also, if you STACK the Vit with other good dmg reduction gear, it REALLY does make a difference! Of course, you will have to be using DEFENDER in a situation like this, and will probably hit for 0 often.

Now, when holding hate comes to be an issue (with geniuses who have no concept of BALANCE in a pt), when you have a SAM thats trying to show off by using a ws in the first 5 seconds of the fight, or a war thats voke pulling, or some other ridiculous nonsense, then you MAY have to hold hate with damage over time (on top of all your other spells/abilities). In THIS instance, Joyeuse DEFINITELY trumps the Durandal, BUT you will take a lot more dmg this way, but hopefully the mobs will be dying faster (if your DD's are pulling enough hate to warrant this method, they BETTER be dying fast!). Firstly, you need a lot of ACC gear if you are fighting VT or higher mobs. Secondly, you CANNOT use DEFENDER with this method! You WILL hit for 0, VERY often! ANyone who claims to still be doing very good dmg as PLD and is still using defender is LYING! Anyway, long story short, if you're using JOyeuse, dont bother using defender, because you're getting VERY minimal hate, and feeding the mob tons of TP.

In HNM events that you're tanking, EVERY little bit of Enmity+ that you can get is the best possible choice. IN this instance, Macahuitl+1(enmity +4) is the ideal choice. As well as a Koenig Shield(+3) HB Mantle (+5), Adaman Gear, Warwolf Belt (+3) Hercules RIng (+3) etc... ALL of which are actually VERY reasonably priced on most servers, so theres no excuse for a high lvl PLD not having this stuff. The reason why this is so important is, once you establish enough hate with so much enmity +, almost nothing can pull it off you, and the BLM's are free to nuke the **** out of the HNM you're fighting (or DD's, but this is less apllicable, since most melee DD's shouldnt be feeding an HNM tp).

Don't buy it.

VIT/Def has severely diminishing returns 71+, and Enmity+1 is outclassed by Macahuitl+1 (Enmity+4) on HNMs.

Pick up a Company Sword or find some help and get a Joyeuse at 70, and don't look back.

Ok, I read most of this post, and I have to say that half of it is people asking and/or telling where you can get this sword outside AH. Is it really that exspensive or your server? On Garuda server currently it is 5k, 5,000gil so Id like to know why everyone is complaining^^ Thank you.

This will definitely be my weapon of choice once I reach 71... It's like the Gluttony Sword +1 or something.

The DPS is nearly as good as Espadon+1 (10.00 vs 10.27 according to cannotlinkto) and I'd take an extra +4 vit and +1 enmity over +3 mnd and +7 attack almost anyday. Might get both anyway for farming or ballista, but we'll see. Plus, this is cheaper!

I googled the name and here is what i got...

DURANDAL

The sword of Roland, fabled to have once belonged to Hector, and which, like the horn, Roland won from the giant Jutmundus. It had in its hilt a thread from the cloak of the Virgin Mary, a tooth of St. Peter, a hair of St. Denys, and a drop of St. Basil's blood. Legend has it that Roland, mortally wounded at Roncesvalles, strove to break Durandal on a rock to prevent it falling in the hands of the Saracens. The sword, however, was unbreakable so he hurled it into a poisoned stream, where it remains for ever.

As told in the Matter of France, Durendal or Durandal (Italian: Durindana) is the sword of Charlemagne's paladin Roland (Orlando in Italian). According to Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso it once belonged to Hector of Troy, and was given to Roland by Malagigi (Maugris).

In The Song of Roland, the sword is said to contain within the hilt a tooth of Saint Peter, blood of Saint Basil, hair of Saint Denis, and a piece of the raiment of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the poem, Count Roland attempts to destroy the sword to prevent it from being captured by the invading Saracens and creates La Brèche de Roland in the Pyrenees in the process. But Durendal proves indestructible, so he hurls it into a poisoned stream instead. Local folklore claims Durendal still exists, preserved in Rocamadour, France. An inscription on Edward the Confessor's sword Curtana read My name is Cortana, of the same steel and temper as Joyeuse and Durendal.

The weapons manufacturing company Matra has revived the name Durandal with its Durandal Anti-Installation, parachute delayed missile system.

Unlike many legends many historians believe this is true, although most of them do not think it is the sword in question many believe that a fragment of an old sword rests there be it durendal or not.

Nice find and interesting story. Is that Norse legend or something else.

I know most of the weapon names are based on some sort of myth but it was just funny to see another SE game referencem, since Front Mission Online is getting ready in Japan.

Actually, as RamzaBeovulve has said towards the top of this page, Durandal is mentioned in a "chanson de geste" (the French equivalent of epic poetry). Specifically this tale is known as "La Chanson de Roland" and, like the vast majority of other similar works, has a historical base but is meant primarily to entertain. For example, true historical characters (such as Charlemagne, known and revered by all) are employed, but the stories were set during a time when this king would have been at least 200 years old.

Ummm, even if you think you don't hold hate by damage, you do. Try tanking for a few hours without engaging and see the difference. Because of the Enmity+ on our AF and other items, along with the fact that we don't hit for 0 and with a lifebelt tend not to miss ALOT, sword hits garner a repectable amount of hate, simply by hitting. If you hit, you get hate, it's that simple. The damage you do is less of a factor, the hitting for more than 0 is the major part. Ofcourse Provoke, Flash, and Cures help to keep a higher hate threshold, meleeing adds to that even more. The low delay on this help hit alot more, and the enmity+ and VIT+ obviously help that, too.

while I do agree that dmg does help hold hate... I don't think it should be considered above vit, or enmity. Paladin has so many hate mechanisms like shield bash, flash, sentinel, cover, rampart, holy circle (if out of everything else)... defender and whatnot from subbing war... that a +1 enmity to each action is a ridiculous amount of hate... not to mention vitality leads to less hate degeneration. While I do think a lifebelt is a great idea, especially once you get spirits within... I dunno... +7 vit is almost too much to turn down.

true on both accounts , this sword is like a good wet dream post 71+ when you snag a Warwolf belt, seeing you wontbe using this for Endgame stuff like HNM seeing you should be rocking a Earthstaff for stuff like Faust and byakko, etc, this no doubt is a Uber sword pretty much, therei s another Blue sword same lvl i think it is but it isnt even that great Vs this one, waste of gil because the +7 Vit and enimty+1 over rules it by a longshot, in closing this sword is best choice to my word, if you have a objection i will GLADLY discuss it with you
#Fujicoro, Posted: May 06 2005 at 3:56 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I am a PLD lv65 and i have to tell you now PLDs do not keep hate by DMG... I have no idea why people keep spreading stuff like that. Another thing is if your losing hate through MBs and SCs it means that you dont have enough hate built up by vokes and flash. I can usually keep hate from am ancient magic burst easily if the PT members give me time to voke and flash atleast 2 times before the MB.. i mean WARs keep hate by DD not PLDs. . .crabs for insance even if i do hit them (i miss alot more than a war. .. no ACC + gear...) i usually do 0-50 DMG and that certainly isnt going to give me any hate. . . especially if you have a good RNG spamming RAs non-stop. PLDs keep hate by Flash, Provoke, Holy Circle (yes this does give minor amouts of hate..i have tested it), Rampart, and Warcy..period.

Hehe, okay, it's simple... there's 2 types of hate, long-term, and short-term. Voke, shield bash, rampart, holy circle, sentinel, defender, berserker, and cover all grant this type of hate... i.e. all job abilities. Long-term hate is generated by damage and spells. You lose hate from taking damage. Therefore, as long as you can either a) cure enough to hold enough hate or b) do enough damage to hold hate, you're good. However, both mp spent on cure, and long fights effect your ability to gain exp, or live through a tougher fight. So it's simple: use a sword that's good enough so you don't hit for 0, berserk for any phsycial dmg WS and kick right after (like fast blade, vorpal blade). Make sure you get a good amount of cures in, voke & flash everytime it's up. However, there's not one set way to play PLD, and remeber that attitude > skill > EQ > race. It's most important to have a few different EQ pieces to change out as the situation requires. I personally have both the gluttony sword and a TM Espadon +1 at lvl 61 (TM Espandon kind of out-dated now, though), as well as a TK and RK Shield +1. I have 4 different rings, 3 different earrings, 2 belts, and two back pieces. I try to pick gear based on the mob's defense, evasion, accuracy, and attack. Being dynamic is key ^^. What personally works the best in my static is the strategy: take as little dmg as possible. It keeps our downtime next to nothing, I have no problems holding hate. However, I do have alternatives if I find that I'm not hitting.

edit: also don't forget the importance of the party working together, debuffs on mob and the strengths/weaknesses of the party set-up also effect strategy.

If you're level 65 and still doing AM bursts something is wrong. Also, PLDs have the second highest tier of str, under drk and war. The only reason we don't do damage is because we don't equip the DD gear we *could* equip, but don't have much use for tanking. If you're hitting for 30-50 a swing with a sword, that's a decent amount. It's missing and hitting for 0 that reduces your hate, or at least doesn't increase it.

I am a 64 PLD and yes, I have tested this just tp prove a point to my team members. I have Turned my back on the Mob, Voked and flashed, waited a while then Healed myself, I was able to keep good amounts of hate, once it went away, flash would bring them back. I tanked an entire battle when I was around 55-60 without hitting the mob once.

But when I can hit, **** yes it does help, especially when you have the MNK and a DRK bringing the pain the entire fight. Matter of fact last night I actually had to work at keeping hate (Most of my parties I can keep hate with my eyes closed) but this one was just unloading **** on the mobs in bibiki bay(PLD/WAR(Me)DRK/NIN, MNK/WAR, BLM/NIN(Yes, Ninja, worked out very nice) BRD/somthing and a WHM/BLM. But on occasion they would take hate right off me, they were just doing intirely to **** much damage. Racked up about 15K in about 2 hours, just getting 150+ Xp off mobs. Then I D/ced, BRD and MNK had to go do Ls **** and so on.

I was able to hold Hate after MNK did 800 with WS/ DRK did SATA+Guillotine onto MNK 1100+ then BLM used Flare for 1100+, after that I still had hate^^ good times ^^

Ok I haven't gone into the intense nuclear physics of this or anything...lol. From my experiences as a paladin, CHR is helpful in battles after you have obtained hate and helping hold hate, and enmity seems to be useful in obtaining hate. When I switch from adaman to koenig equipment, I can sense the huge difference in holding hate. Also during Dynamis, when 2 plds happen to provoke the same mob, the one wearing all adaman will have the hate, opposed to me wearing my koenig pieces. Not trying to say anyone is wrong, but figure I would throw that up to you guys to think about.

From my experience, enmity adds to your hate - so a provoker with a higher enmity will get hate from the mob, but CHR affects the loss of hate - a higher CHR means less loss of hate, allowing you to keep in longer when you're getting hit.

From my experience, this is not true, CHR does not affect hate directly. It does have an effect on certain weapon skills which would have an effect, as more damage = more hate.

So many people have confused CHR with having an effect on hate/enmity that this subject is getting out of hand.

MidouSan wrote:

So if a fully CHR decked out BRD managed to get hate in a party, they would have trouble losing it? If this did happen, it would be -very- rare, then the tank sucks, period.

CHR affects BRD songs, BST charm, killer effects? and certain weapon skills, not hate/enmity/decay of enmity.

Tymon brings up a good point. see most people think you can keep hate with just Voke and Flash. well if you are a pld you will know thats not enough Koenig armor looks good but not very useful. the people with Koenig is the lack of dex and str. in order to keep hate you need to do dmg. Thats why the easpadon is so popular among pld instead of the Durdanel or whatever its called. all the Vit and def in the world wont help when you lose hate cause you cant hit the mob and your voke and flash timers are to high. when that happens whm die ;;

A pld meleeing dosn't get much hate at all, Provoke & Flashing whenever thier ready and I don't see how you can lose hate in a regular xp party.

PLDs are there to take damage, not make it. There is no reason for you to use high damage weapons or + Str/Dex equipment since the only decent hate from your sword is the WS, witch is either based on Chr or HP.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. A paladin needs to dish out as much hate as s/he possibly can. Every little bit helps, because it might lead to one extra nuke from your black mage, leading to a quicker fight and better exp/hour.

You need to be using BIG CURES to keep the hate, man, along with EVERY OTHER Paladin job skill. If you are ONLY using voke and flash you are gimping your party big time. Not to mention if you aren't using your job skills such as Defender/Sentinal/Rampart you are taking a LOT of extra damage you don't have to.

You might as well say a Paladin doesn't need food as he doesn't need to cure and use job skills. Sheesh.

In retrospect, Curtana is a pretty crappy sword. Joyeuse and Durandal are obviously intended for regular use. Curtana is merely a trade item for a quest to get some semi-mundane dagger (in my opinion). It gives +7CHR and has 1DMG. Weak and insulting considering the stats they gave to Joyeuse and Durandal. I was extremely dissapointed (in case anyone can't tell).

Actually, he is +17 enmity, which is quite high for exp pts, which is what I simulated him to be for, if I simulated a HNM tanker, his vit would be much higher and his enmity would be as well.

I think the major downside is a lack of provoke. Using a mnk as sub to get more vit you loose the best way of controlling hate. That huge charisma isn't worth anything without it.

HP+ equipment would be maxed, followed by VIT+ and finally enmity+. That's how HNM PLDs equip themselves.

I was doing the math once, with all the perfect equipment, a PLD can get somewhere between 120 and 130 added VIT if I remember correctly.

Yeah, got bored and simulated it. http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/profile.xml?78289

The other 11-21 VIT comes from the correct food, potions, the Memento Muffler enchantment, and BRD Etudes.

#countzerointerrupt, Posted: Jan 01 2005 at 8:30 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The thing youre gonna have to understand, shadowbuni, is that he has doubled his chr and in so doing has effectively doubled the potency of his provokes and any other hate grabbing gestures. I believe this makes up for the lack of + enmity gear.

CHR doesn't affect provoke potency at all!
Stop spreading false theories!

Gotta disagree with you there, if Chr dosn't effect it then what does? a High lvl pld is gonna have a much stronger voke due to Chr than a lower lvl one, Enmity tho I do in fact notice a huge difference in my hate grabbing and holding ability with the + to enmity then with a chr boost, however to those who think pld doing damage effects our ability to hold hate, total BS in xp parties, I'd rate this sword a good 10 out of 10 for xp, I believe that just the +1 enmity off the sword will more than make up for any loss of damage

In an interview SE stated that CHR does not affect provoke. End of discussion.

re: Emperor's egg = Tsar's egg

It's the Tsar's egg you're describing.

It does not give the Provoke abilty.

Provoke only goes off when you Throw the egg.

get's pretty expensive

Any job can voke with a emperor's egg. I might and probably do have the item name wrong but you can see it under throwing in the AH. It can be equipped by all jobs and gives the Provoke job ability. I have no idea what kind of crafting level you need for it but it has gotta be **** near godly. The stats on it are awesome. Pld/Nin with it seems like a great idea but imagine a Pld/Mnk with this egg that gives voke. Can you imagine the Vit and Def that a pld could have with a mnk sub? An IT mob would have a hard time doing any real damage at all.

Even though PLDs don't get voke off of WAR sub, picture this:

PLD/NIN 75(with some way of voking)

Dual Wielding 2 of these(no, they aren't rare)

Full Koenig/Kaiser(Adaman to be more realistic)

Utsusemi: Ichi/Ni

=

Never get hit, and when he does get hit he takes 10% of the original damage output. :X

**EDIT/UPDATE**: Made a charecter with realistic stats(nothing outlandish) just to get a glimpse of how awesome this would be.
PS: The Robust Earring was added because the Mercenary Earring only effects WAR sub.
