Well I have to say this is also a pretty funny item for RDM/NINs who have some levels in Great Katana previously. It's pretty neat using some GK weaponskills as an RDM :D

I can confirm that this does add +1 Refresh and Regen while sleeping. Very useful in Yhoator and Yuhtunga. :) I noticed one poster said you can't be cursed with this equipped. I haven't tested this yet, but I may be taking a trip to Beadeaux soon to test it. ^^

*Edit: OK, so it took me a while to get around to it, but I did finally test it and it is not true that you cannot be cursed with this equipped. ; ;

Zanbato-(AKA "Horse Cutter") Long, really REALLY heavy, and about as tall as two humans standing on top of each other. Long thick blade, and a smaller wooden handle for wielding it.

Invented before the Sengoku period, and designed to take a rider and horse down in one swing. It's the heaviest katana ever made, and is said that's it's so heavy, no one has been able to wield it to its full capacity.

Sakabato-A katana with the blade upside down. Also known as a "Reverse Blade Sword" in English. It cannot kill someone, as the blade is reversed, but I imagine it could do some heavy NON-lethal damage. ^^ If the user wishes, the blade CAN be reversed and become a regular katana, depending on the make of it.

u stole that from samurai x a.k.a. kenshin
sanosuke was called zanza because his weapon of choice was the zanbato and kenshins was the reverse blade sword although i dont belive they ever called it by its true name in the series.... well maybey u didnt actualy steal it but seeing both in the same post struck me as odd especialy because of their signifigance in such a hit anime... oh btw if u cant be cursed if ur carrying the HW katana.... hope it helps ^.^
I love this item

This item owns for mages and non-meleers in kazham, the refresh+regen effect while slept combined with a smn's autorefresh is cutting avatar perpetual costs down by 2 when sleeping if you above lv 25, not to mention any job that doesnt need to maintain xp can switch to this everytime they get slept (I.E. bards). Takes the biggest negative of kazham xp training and makes it an advantage!
Hardwood Katana Purpose
# May 07 2005 at 7:04 PM Rating: Decent
a lot of people are saying that the hardwood katana is useless, but if you look closely, this isnt the whole festival, i hve a feeling that there is going to be more to this festival, for example :

"After the slight hiccup with the Doll Festival, the M.H.M.U. decided to hold a festival that appealed to the male half of the adventuring population. We sought the advice of a distinguished samurai, and began preparing for the Feast of Swords, kupo.
Our samurai adviser kindly brought in some sets of legendary armor from the Far East to lend an authentic feel to the event. That's when our problems began, kupo...
Someone--or something--broke into our vaults and stole the suits of armor, kupo"

notice that he was preparing for something when the suits were stolen? there is a posibility, like in summerfeast, that there is a second part to this festival and that the hardwood katana isnt as useless as people think.

useless? that yakuta apparently was for the worse half of the event with the paper scooping .. u get magic drops and Spirit Masques .... how is that useful !?!?!?!?
How to Obtain this Weapon
# May 07 2005 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
Sorry, for bringing this up again, I don't know how many times this has been asked, but how do you get the hardwood katana? I nearly killed an Armor after chasing it about an hour but it used an attack called "Death Edge" and killed me instead >.< After turning in my aura I recieved some mocchi but no sword.... How many armors do I need to kill, or how badly should I damage one?

P.S. I am just now starting this game any and all help is GREATLY appreciated!

No, it does not do enthunder, it only uses the visual effect of enthunder. It does no extra damage when it strikes.

This has a hidden effect when slept. It gives you regen and refresh when equipped and you are asleep
Use of this sword
# May 05 2005 at 2:29 PM Rating: Decent
The practical use of this sword....u can level great katana skill for nin (but who wants to?), but however, your first samurai sword (mumeito) hits harder then this....again, my mules have one just for the look of it, and since they wear the level 8 monk gear, looks kinda nice...otherwise, this just gonna take up more space in my alreaday full mog safe

Well, it may not be useful for melee, even at lower levels, but, however, it CAN be useful for mages. Keep using your normal weapon (if it really matters, however, most mages have INT/MND/MP+ weapons) unless you get asleep. When/If that's the casem equip your Hardwood Katana. Slowly but surely, you gain HP and MP.
hmmm

Could you use this to skill up Great Katana skill with a job that doesn't normally use a Great Katana?

Sorry, you wouldn't be able to, You can only skill up if your job has skill in it. (Ex: RDM has no skill in staves or H2H weapons (yet they can equip staves and some H2H weapons) if you try to fight with them you won't get any skill-up.

It would of been nice if they made it a furniture so you could hang it on your wall of your mog house.

Is this really the only other thing you get from this "mog quest" is there like a 3rd bokuto or maybe some samurai armor that is crappy lv.1 but looks neat? Don't tell me its just this and Mochi.... Its sorta neat having a training katana to run around with...but I was hoping for more...oh well.

It's a great katana anyone can use at any level in any job. It's fun. And, like Crosshairz said, sentimental value.

And bragging rights. :P october 2005 rolls around.. run around Sandy with the HW katana.. all the newbs are like, "Dude, where'd you get that?" And you're like, oh yeah.. lemme tell you a story. A long time ago (okay, May), some armor was being brought by the Moogles from the Far East...

I wish I knew what it was that I said in this post that made it worth 4.55. I'd bottle it and sell it. :D

I'd wear my katana when I'm out PLing a LS mate or a friend. I'd only switch it out if I had to engage something.

# May 11 2005 at 4:11 PM Rating: Decent
Nah, it's a Bokken, since I have one. :P labeled: "Bokken" in Japan. so... don't think they've got it wrong :P heh.. A bamboo sword is a Shinai. Used in Kendo.
RE: what use?
# May 05 2005 at 1:20 PM Rating: Decent
Are you sure that what you have isn't a shinai (used in kendo)?

Ok here it is...all the words that mean "sword" or relate to swords in Japanese

Ken: sword (refered to ancient 2 edged swords that the settlers brought from Korea, China, and Taiwan areas to Japan)

Tsurugi: Also Sword (As far as I know this can be referred to any type of sword but is usually added to the end as a sword suffix ex. "Fuuin no Tsurugi= sealing sword, sword of Sealing etc.")

Katana: single edged long sword

Wakizashi: single edged short sword

Tanto: dagger

To: Suffix added to the end of the word telling its a sword ex. Nihon-to = Japanese Sword (sometimes spelled -tou)

Daito: Long sword

Shoto: Short sword

Bokuto: Wooden sword (usually a katana for training purposes and ex-samurai in the Meiji era carred them since they weren't allowed to have swords anymore)

Ninjato- also called Shinobigatana (why it is "gatana" I'm really not sure, I'm not that educated in Japanese yet...sorry)

Bokken: Wodden Sword

Shinai: Bamboo Sword used in Kendo

Um...I think thats all of them...if anyone knows of others, please list them if you feel the desire to. I hope this is useful to you all and clears some of the confusion about Japanese swords.

Oh yeah...I forgot about these

Tachi: Long single edged sword with curved handle usually a cavalry sword.

Nodachi: Extra long katana I guess about 4 ft. maybe. Not sure what they were for...but I can only imagine them being infantry anti-cavalry weapons.

Dotanuki: Katana that is extra thick and heavier, developed by Dotanuki Kunikatsu (Masakuni). Designed for better one stroke cuts

/smile

Good post, but I know of two you forgot. :)

Invented before the Sengoku period, and designed to take a rider and horse down in one swing. It's the heaviest katana ever made, and is said that's it's so heavy, no one has been able to wield it to its full capacity.

Oh yeah, and back in the Sengoku era, Samurais could wield two swords also. ^^ Although, it signified that they were highly honored and had participated in many a battle.

Hope that helps. ^^

Excellent post, it's great when you learn something from reading these forums, this is like that post the one guy (can't remember, sorry) made about caviar, and compared real life stuff to the curries in the game. You intellectual people rock.

And now a song I have has a lot more meaning because I realize what a certain word means, hahah.

Milbereth, you were right on about the nodachi. They were used by some footsoldiers to unhorse cavalrymen.
