Hate shifts.

When hate shifts to another target while this guy is casting a spell, that spell will be interupted no matter what, as long as the spell doesn't go off before the hate shifts. This is very important when you first pop it (have someone there ready to voke it when it starts casting a spell on the person who popped it).
Provoke alone won't interupt the spell if it doesn't generate enough enmity to pull hate off of the mobs target.
This item works at 50% mp or under, in other words under 51%.

I'd just like to warn anyone doing this quest, don't look at the wikipedia guide, it's completely wrong, it says go west the first time while you have to go east.
This is one of the most fun NM fights I've ever done, went 1/3 on my shiny pendant when I was BLM 70 ^^ and don't regret the painful hours spended farming for knife ingredients and the many experience points I lost on the NM.
Good luck to everyone doing this quest.

We did this guy last night, its a fun fight. It is definately different than most NM's. Beastmasters pawn for this fight (Just remember to bring a detrimite down from the higher levels before the final drop). That or use the new HQ jug pets eft, detrimete and antlion all hit this guy for 40-75 a shot consistantly (compared to bst axe 20-40, thf dagger 5-10, sam katana 30-60, only DD we had smacking this thing around); oddly jug dammage seemed unaffected by this guys high def melee weapons, maybe due jugs being considered "Magic damage" by SE weapons calculations (not sure). Smns are awesome DD for this fight as well as the BPs from most advatars hit him for 400-600.

Other than that, nothing new to add, that has not been covered. other than to repeat the kite like made idea and that if you have 3-4 melee pounding this guy, deaths should be really rare as he seems to have a pretty decent rate of inturptions due to constant pounding by melee.

So would the Latent kick in if you have 0mp? Just wondering if it'd be worth it to get this to macro in for ninjutsu spells.

[Edit: Works with NIN/WHM too. Probly need a base of MP]

[Edit: I placed a Merits in MP to test with 10MP/30MP. Didn't works at all. Probly need a /sub mage]

Alright, everything is pretty accurate here, but I want to give a more detailed strategy on how to actually fight this guy and win. This is not like any notorious monster fight in the game. You do not straight up beat down this mob. Its not Hakutaku, not a god, its not Serket, its something totally different. First of all, you DO NOT NEED A TANK. Yes, you heard me. While having a pld is nice to be able to flash the mob, you dont need a tank. This guy doesnt melee at all. All he does is cast spells, Tier IV, aga III, silencega, paralyna, and death.

You should have 2 redmages to gravity this *****, 3 black mages to nuke, and a lot of melee, a lot. Whomever has hate, just have them run in the circle. Then have the redmages gravity, with the melee chasing behind it just beating it down when it stops to cast on the kiter. If the kiter goes down from death or anything else, quickly establish who has hate and have that person begin kiting. Tanks are pretty useless since death goes through shadows and paladins fall just as easy as other people when they get nuked. IF you have beastmasters, that great to use for this fight. You really cant lose if you have like 4+ melee beating on it at all times, since we have done like 12 runs and found out that while yes, you cant stun his spells, if your constantly beating his *** melee style, most of his spells will get resisted.

Whatever you do, dont stop ever. You have to be running the whole time. You can kill this guy in like 10 minutes with this strategy. I can only imagine what it would be like with like 6 bsts pummeling his ***. So remember, no tanks, just bring a lot of melee and a rdm to gravity him and your set.
Tonberry Hate

The level of tonberry hate you have does not affect the strength of the latent effect. The effect is a fixed Magic Atk. Bonus +8. I've done some tests and posted the results in the Black Mage forum if you're interested in the specifics.

Good news!
After using this for a while...I can almost surely say that YES...the latent DOES kick in when you cast a spell that takes you below 50% mp. You do NOT have to be @50% mp or less but you have to use a spell that will TAKE you to less than 50% mp.

I <3 this piece of equipment. I notice a good 50-100 point swing in damage when the latent is in effect...tonberry hate costs me 4000 gil to get rid of whatever level of hate that is. Not sure.

Does the spell have to be a nuke or can it be any kind of spell?
RE: ok...
# Apr 07 2008 at 8:57 AM Rating: Decent
It can't be just any spell. Since the latent is Mag. Attk +8, any spell that you use ON an enemy that takes away its hp counts. So anything elemental (rasp, for example), and spells like dia work as well. It doesn't work on enfeebling spells.

got the synth items for the knife ^_^ now just need a hi-lvl smith to make it for me w.

i plan on using this pretty much all the time (or at least times when i get below 50% MP of course) as soon as i get it, except of course on things like kirin, wyrms, and iceland dynamis mobs, because my current equipment along with merit points gives me (this is without elemental torque obviously) 289 total skill, so i'm not too worried about getting resisted unless we're talking about the aforementioned NMs, etc.
oh yes it works.
# May 31 2005 at 2:29 AM Rating: Default
Ok. This thing flat out rocks for nukes if your MP is less than 50%. I tested this (as RDM) and even my weak RDM III spells were doing up to 10% more dmg vs. any other neckpiece.

I usually use elemental torque since RDM spells are resisted alot on higher lvl mobs though and I probably would not use this VS. Gods or mobs >lvl 80+ but against land HNM, it should be OK on MB--just not regular nukes.

Actually did one thunder III to a Tabar Beak outside Jueno for 874 dmg vs 798 without the pendant (same mob, lightsday, no weather, non-resisted). I tested it again and it did 854 with and 778 without. I'm thinking with this, I can finally get my RDM to burst over 1000 mark. 988 was my highest on thunder III vs. Aura statue in sky on lightning day but I was using republic circlet (+5 MAB in areas of nations own control.) With this pendant, you can get up to +10 MAB depending on tonberry hate lvl. Imagine using this AND the republic circlet with the moldavite earring and Duelist boots as RDM. +24 MAB, oh hell yes.

Equipment I was using...Jupiter staff, Phantom Talthum, Morion earring +1, Moldavite earring,AF1 hat, errant body, mahatma slops, snow ring x 2, Marine gloves (RSE2 hume), Prism cape, Pentitent rope and Duelist boots and the pendant --no food.

The sucky part is that it only works with 50% mp or less, HOWEVER while testing it, I think I noticed that it works with spells that WILL TAKE YOU to less than 50% when casted. This is important to note. I will test it again to make sure this is correct since I'm not 100% sure if it works that way.

Guide to obtaining your very own ‘Uggalepih Pendant’

Step 0: Introduction

Uggalepih Pendant was added in the April 05 Content Update. It drops from a Tonberry Notorious Monster in Pso’xja. The NM is force spawned from a ‘???’; the trigger for this NM is the Odorous Knife, also added in the same update. Please note, I am a 75BLM/37RDM, Elvaan, your mileage might vary from what is written in this guide.

Step 1: The Knife

The Odorous Knife is crafted from 3 synthesis materials: White Steel, Magnolia Lumber, and a Darksteel Ingot. The synthesis requires Smithing, and woodworking. Exact caps are unknown at this time, but Smithing 80+ and Woodworking 25+ can definitely succeed. Both the White Steel and the Magnolia Lumber can only be purchased from Bazaars or traded. They can not be Auction Housed, or Mailed.

White Steel: This steel drops from Tonberry Stabbers located in the Temple of Uggalepih. There are reportedly ten spawn locations for the Stabbers. They are Ninjas, and level ranges from 61-67. The only place I could find them was at G-8 and I-7 on the map that the Thief Knife NM spawns. The G-8 location is the recommended one, if you are feeling a bit dangerous, you can try to hit up both locations. These mobs were Easy Prey to me at 75. They are not that difficult to solo, with 780 MP, I can chain cast Blizzard 4, Thunder 4 and Fire 4, and kill it on one MP pool. I suggest taking some pebbles for pulling. There are 2 Pots that circle the G-8 location and they aggro magic. Pulling to the stairs near the zone line will prevent the pots from adding. Also be wary of the bees, they aggro sight. These also can be taken out with a single MP pool. However these hit harder, so I recommend using Bind to fight them.

Magnolia Lumber: This lumber drops from Cryptonberry Stalkers (THF) in the uncapped section of Pso’xja. The ones I farmed were located in the tower at G-9 of Beaucedine Glacier, this is an Uncapped Area. These mobs are level 53-60. They are ‘Too Weak’ to me at 75. They are fairly easy to kill. Combining nuking with melee, I could kill all 5 of the tonberries in the area without resting. There are two Stalkers, one near the entrance, and on a little bit in, on the staircase. The tonberries are the only mobs that aggro in the immediate area. The lizards there do not aggro. I would like to note, if you decide to go exploring, at the top of the stairs, there is a room with a ‘???’. If you examine it, 2 doll type mobs will spawn, and the door to the room will close. Your only way out is warp, or escape. You can not win this fight solo, at any given time, one of them is immune to magic, and the other is immune to physical, and they alternate at will.

Darksteel Ingot: Buy at the Auction House.

Step 2: The Cryptonberry: Golden-Tongued Culberry

The NM: Golden-Tongued Culberry is a Tonberry type mob. He wears the red robes that the other Cryptonberries in Pso’xja wear. His level is in the low 80s, based on the XP earned at the end of the fight. He is a BLM-WHM combo mob, and can cast all of the Tier 3 –gas, and Tier 4s. He can also cast Silencega and other status –gas. In addition to this he is also the only non-dynamis mob that can cast Death. He is highly resistant to both Silence and Paralyze, and is completely immune to the spell Stun. He can, and will cast Cure IV on himself. He also has all the normal Tonberry abilities: Everyone’s Grudge/Rancor, Lateral Slash, Vertical Slash, and Throat Stab.

The Path: My directions will be based upon the maps located at http://www.ffxi-atlas.com Enter the tower marked as Tower 1 on the Beaucedine Glacier Map (F-7). From here, head down the hall until you enter the room, go East, and drop down hole ‘G’ at I-8. Now head north into the big round room, then west, then north again to drop down hole ‘H’ at I-7. From here head north and west, you will want to drop down the first hole you come to (Hole ‘S’ at I-6). Before you drop, please take note of the following: in the next room is an Archaic Chest. It is a Mimic type mob, and very difficult. Also in this room is a spawn for a Dark Elemental. When we fell through we were aggroed by the Chest, and couldn’t cast cures because of the VT elemental. According to Mystery Tour, the Chest will only aggro to sound. So before anyone takes the fall, make sure you are all sneaked. Walk out of the room with the chest, and you are in the kiting room. Climb the left staircase, and take the western tunnel to find the ‘???’. After the fight, if you are low on Escapers, if you take the East tunnel, you will find a teleporter to the top of Pso’xja. Make sure you review the maps before you go so that you know your route, the ‘???’ is clearly marked on the maps at Vana’diel Atlas. My alliance easily fought its way through Pso’xja to the NM spawn. The mobs are not very dense, and the top floor is all ‘Too Weak’. The second floor is ‘Easy Prey’ and the third floor is ‘Decent Challenge’ (all to a level 75).

The Strategy: Very close to the location of the NM is a LARGE open room. The recommended strategy is kiting it. If you kite it, the tank will be able to run out of range of the NM’s spells. Death is a very fast cast time, so unless you are already at max range when he starts casting, you’re going down. Utsusemi will not absorb Death. As I mentioned before, the NM is immune to the spell Stun. However, stunning weapon skills, such as Fast Blade, DO work.
In the room below the spawn point, there is a single Tonberry pop, I recommend someone with a sword, get 100% TP on that before you pop the NM. Use the hallway that the NM spawns in, as a staging ground, rest up MP, rest away weakness, etcetera. Set up a stun order between 2-3 people. Have them use weapon skills to stun Death. We had one Paladin with Joyeuse doing it, alone. Joyeuse built up TP fast enough for Fast Blade. The key to this fight is, keep moving. Normal melees can stay engaged, just be careful with weapon skills. Paladins, Ninjas, Rangers, and Black Mages need to keep moving at all times. Stop just long enough to attack/provoke/WS, then start running again. And ‘Don’t Panic’ it’s a fun fight, just make sure people who pull hate bring an XP buffer. I highly recommend two White Mages w/ Raise 3. We did it with one, but it was rough until we figured out we could stun with weapon skills, all she ever really did was raise. My group was an alliance of 16, this was probably overkill, but we were still together from a trip to sky. We had PLDx3, NIN, BLMx2, RNG, WHM, THF, MNK, SAM, DRG, RDM, SMN

The Drop: If the NM is spawned with an Odorous Knife +1, the drop is 100%. If spawned with a normal quality, it is not. I will not give a percentage on the normal quality spawn, because I do not have any data to back it up. I have heard 25%, 50%, and even one 75%. My alliance had a Thief with us, and we got the pendant on the first kill.

Step 3: The Pendant

http://syb.kicks-***.net/downloads/Pendant.jpg

The latent effect trigger is MP. It kicks on when you are at or below 50% of your maximum MP.
The Magic Attack Bonus given by the pendant varies from +1 to +10. The amount is directly proportional to your Tonberry Hate. The more hate you have, the more MAB you get.

This is mostly right and a pretty good guide but:

1. Much easier way to get magnolia lumber is to farm gigas in Beaucedine. They drop it as well, and are very easy to kill.

2. Soloing Stabbers is possible for sure, but can be pretty dangerous. What I did was just ask LS if anyone needed Uggalepih coffer key for any AF or map - the Stabbers and other Tonberries around them are coffer mobs (and you'll throw away many a key before seeing white steel (._.)). One mage and one melee together own the zone, so you get a lot of safety plus your friends get maps, etc.

3. I have heard a lot of ppl say the MAB is related to Tonberry hate, but everyone who reset hate says it did not change, so I would hesitate to believe this. I haven't reset mine yet personally but I doubt they are related.

I was with Benny when we killed the NM for his pendant, it was about as much fun as the Tatami Shield NM. The +1 knife is rumored to be 100% drop of the pendant. I can say it did drop for us using Benny's +1 knife.

A note on the fight. Take the NM down to the room below and kite him around the floor and up and down the stairs in a circle for an easy fight. By kiting him you can easily run out of range when he stops to cast Death. Also, Death spell goes through Utsusemi, much to my dismay.

Information on spawn item ingredients:

Go to Pso'Xja entrance near Rang Pass.

Farm Cryptonberry Stalkers for Magnolia Lumber.

2 near zone, 2 behind the doors you need key items for ( Defeat NM's at the ???, soloable by any 75 melee /nin, very low accuracy)

mobs are TW to 75
----

Go to Temple of Ugg. Go to Sozu Camp (THF Knife)
Farm White Steel off Tonberry Stabbers.

Mobs are EP to 75
---

Buy Darksteel Ingot off AH

Smithing 70~(estimate) - Darksteel Ingot + White Steel + Magnolia Lumber = Odorous Knife.

a 75 BLM can solo farm these items.

For those curious, the Uggalepih Pendant latent is active when your MP is less than 50%. The MAB on it is about +6% damage, maybe a little less. Nice to have a new endgame type item for BLMs^^.

-benny, Valefor.

<<endquoth

Considering I'm planning BLM to 75, this item is going to be a major pain in the *** to get. Odorous Knife +1 will be a must, and a good PT another. *SIGH*

I wonder if this is better than the elemental torque?

My opinion: W/ full set of elemental staff, yes. W/o, no. I don't know. Both are a large investment.
RE: thought on LA activation
# May 16 2005 at 2:16 PM Rating: Default
Elemental Magic affects the rate of resists on a cast whereas Magic Attack Bonus and INT affect actual damage output. XPing at 75 MAB and INT are the most important stats because resists don't come from the XP mobs thus making this better than the torque. I have fairly respectable equipment (see my profile) and one of the Hume BLMs in my last party was wearing this along with Jupiter staff and Genie Igqira (>.<) and was outdamaging myself and a taru by about 100-200 damage on each Thunder IV. This is a truly formidable piece and definitely something I look forward to obtaining.

nope, actually this is activated when your MP goes below 50%. and the magic attack bonus is proportionate to the amount of tonberry hate you have, capping at magic attack+10

o and about the monster that drops it, he's the only non-dynamis mob (that i know of) that casts death, not mortal ray, but straight up death. enjoy! ^_^
