Went searching for silica in order to make a glass sheet for the goldfish bowl.^^
Since I intended the goldfish bowl to be a surprise, I had to solo these mobs which meant either Lufaise or Misareaux Coast. According to Somepage, Lufaise only has three Crimson Crab spawns, so I figured I'd try my luck on Misareaux.
Came as a gimped 62thf/31bm (the decision to do this was spontaneous, therefore I didn't have any equipment other than my knife), with the hopes of encouraging drops with TH2. I camped at Rafeloux River in I-6. There were roughly four makara spawns in the immediate vicinity and since it took me about 1.5-2 minutes to kill each fish, that was more than enough.^^
What I experienced on 43% First Quarter Moon, Lightsday:
- At level 62, I was getting anywhere from 20-29 exp per kill.
- Makaras take about 5 minutes to respawn.

0/12 Bigclaws
6/13 Makara

As a 75 whm/blm I had about a 1/8 drop rate from the Makara. When I went back and subbed my gimpy thf (26) it jumped to about 1/5 or so. Hope that gives everyone a look at the drop rate with and w/o TH. I camped at the same place as Lissia (The I-6 river in Misareaux Coast)

Ok, went to lufaise meadows, killed 6 crabs, 63PLD/27THF, no drop.
Went to Misareaux Coast, killed 6 crabs, 5 makara, no Drop. This one sucks. 17 mobs, no drop. Not worth my time.

Ok i spent a little over an hour using field gear and got two silica in the canyon and only broke 6 pickaxes, spent two hours killing the pugil type mobs in the jungle and got no silica does it drop of of them or not?.

Wasted 3 stacks of pickaxes in Tahrongi yesterday. No silica. Unless it depends on a certain weather or day, I'm not too sure it drops often there.
I was mining around with earth elementals popping up, if that gives anyone any help.

we went through close to 6 stacks between the two of us (my wife and I) and only got one silica. We got a few ancient logs, and some rocks though, along with the usual.. so it wasn't too bad.

Post Aug 1st Update availability of Silica:
So SE increased the availability of this. It is apparently dropped off other mobs now, not just Big Jaw and Makara. Also it can be attained through Excavation in Tahrongi and Shakrami.
If you find it dropping anywhere else please post here ^^

Ok, I been sitting here reading up like a hawk for this silica. Theres no way SE would make a new item like this for a festival item. All three Aquariums require a glass sheet made from 6 pieces of silica. I bet the mob drop is to be a rare thing, hence the 150-500k price on yalls AH's. I for one was getting promy done so i could farm it myself. But,,, With the new swimwear +1 (improves clamming). My Bet is that it is to be clammed as a few others of you have mentioned. The Goldfish Set from one fishing scoop festival quest & the Silica from the Swimsuit/Clamming festival quest would seem more likely. This drops off of Big Jaw and Makara in Misareaux Coast as well... seems this was just found out today as the price went from 150k to 20k (and dropping) in 12 hours on Odin. >.<

No, it's a design flaw in the allakhazam database. Zone-specific drops of mobs that appear in several areas will cause this flaw to emerge.
Phomiuna Aquaducts Big Jaws and Makara are the ONLY pugils to drop the silica... unfortunatly.
Silica is 120k and dropping on Bismarck Jeuno AH.

Makara in the Aqueducts also drop this, not just Big Jaws. So if you're farming subligars, be sure to kill a few makara also, they will indeed drop it. And the drop rate is much better than you'd imagine with a ~400k price tag for each.

Interestly enough, Makara isn't listed on Allakhazam's Phomiuna Aqueducts Mob List, yet they are listed on Somepage's Phomiuna Aqueducts Mob List.
If you look at the level-range of the pugil listed:
Big Jaw: 37 - 39
Makara: 44 - 47
So Makara should drop the silica a lot more often than the Big Jaws.

anyone tried clamming for this...seems like a likely source of silica. some of the other stuff for making aquariums comes from clamming. and the new summer equips have some special ability: Reduce clamming 'incidents'.

I spent two hours tonight clamming, and did not get silica even once. I made it up to 150 ponzes of capacity a few times, too.
I did, however, get three petrified logs, which are also on the synth for the aquariums.
