In conjuction with Chainmaker Key Item(10000 Guild Points/Smithing), this allows you to make multiple chains from one crystal.
so, umm, how?

So, ummm, Anyone know how to use this or what it is for? I know the description says that it helps make chains. If so then how do you use them?

With the recent patch, they included several guild specific items that have the equivalent effect to 'bundling twine' in woodworking. It allows you to use one of the new items along with more raw ingredients than for a 'normal synth' but to still use one crystal. Basically it lets you use less crystals to synth the same amount of product.

In the case of this item, it allows you to make a greater quantity of metal chain per synth.

Keep in mind that some of these new items require a guild 'ability' to use, just like 'lumberjack' is required to use bundling twine synths.

As far as I know, items that can be sold on the AH won't actually show up until someone puts one up for sale.

I'm not sure why you'd want to buy it from the AH when you can get it from the smithing guild for 75 gil each?

This is almost like people paying 2000 gil for little worms at the Bastok AH when Bastok is in first place while they can simply buy them from the shop in Bastok mines for only a little over 40 gil a stack.
