For those of you talking about the quest where you need the Maul, there is a weapon called a "Replica Maul" which can be used for this quest. many different jobs can use this "replica". if you go to the proper quest page it will explain everything

Quest Title: Guest of Hauteur

Related NPC's:
Powhatan - Bastok Port - Steaming Sheep Restaurant (E-6)
Steel Bones - Bastok Port - Bridge to Bastock Markets (D-8)

After completing his first mission i zoned to Bastok Markets and was able to come back and get the second mission. Powhatan wants you to meet a second guest and this time he wants you to wear a Maul (lvl 31 White Mage Hammer). The guests name is "Domien" (An Elvaan Knight) and he wants you to greet him when he arrives at the Bastok Port Air Travel Agency. After talking to everyone at the Air Travel Agency in Bastok Port and not triggering any cutscenes or meeting the guest otherwise i decided to go back and talk to Powhatan he then gave me three options.

1) Where can i find a Maul?
2) Where am i supposed to meet your guest?
3) Nothing

I chose #2 and he replied that his guest must have already arrived and is probably lost in the Bastok Port District or possibly Markets District and requests you go find him. Go talk to Steel Bones the Bastokan guard standing on the bridge that connects Port to Markets (Rye Bridge) and you will see a cutscene where Domien shows up and is annoyed at your lack of punctuality so he leaves you with a complaint letter for Powhatan This is a key item titled: Letter From Domien. Return this letter to Powhatan and he will reward you with a Targe (lvl 31 War/Rdm/Pld/Bst/Sam Def: 7)

Just as with the first mission this is a class dependant quest you must be Whm 31st lvl or higher to wear the required weapon (Maul)

Cheers, Hope this helps. Arien ~ Carbuncle

Shell Shield
# Jan 06 2004 at 10:42 PM Rating: Default
you do not need to have a 7+ shield, level 7 will do fine. Same reward.

I can't stand this quest. I got this quest as a low level Black Mage, and I'm now Level 34 and still haven't completed it. Why? I don't like Melee classes. Once I level up Red Mage to Level 7, I'll finally finish it, but this really is an annoying quest. They shouldn't have quests that are solely restricted to certain classes... and you say he gives another quest that needs an item that's only equippable by White Mage? *sigh*

hm, have you ever played any other rpg that involves classes ? I assume you did...
it is quite normal that you will, from time to time, encounter class-restricted quests.
on the bright side, in this game, you can change classes whenever you feel like it !
it's not like if it was a mission and you couldn't get another one til it was completed...

I do agree, though, that he could mention that you need to be a certain class/type to do the question before it gives it, but in my mind it's not a big deal.

I hope I can clear up the specs on how to complete this quest for you. I've helped plenty of people asking about this particular quest...I must've gone through the steps over 10 times.
<(^_^)> I just love helping people...heh.

Step 1. To get the quest, talk to Powtahan in the Steaming Sheep Restaurant, located in the north eastern part of Port Bastok. Powtahan will be on your right side when you enter the building. He will ask you to wear a Shell Shield to greet his guest at the Air Travel Agency.

Shell Shields
You can go into South Gustaberg to fight the Quadavs for a chance at aquiring one. I think the Young Quadavs drop them. I wasn't sure...so I killed every Quadav I ran into. <(^_^)> You can also bid on them at the Auction House. The prices range between 70-200 gil on my server. Bid low & work your way up. You might get lucky.

Step 2. Your character must be able to equip this shield. So you must be at least a level 7 job class that can equip it. If you're not able to equip it...then I suggest switching you job class to a suitable one, earn a level 7 & continue on with the quest.

Step 3. When you go to the Air Travel Agency, you need to enter the "ARRIVALS" door, not the Departures. You'll know which one, if you take the stairs that lead downward. You will see 2 receptionists. Talk to the one on the RIGHT side. His name starts with a "B" I think. When you speak to him, a cut scene will play...and Evrain will stroll in.

Step 4. You then need to head back to the Steaming Sheep Restaurant & talk to Powtahan again. He will then reward you with a Spatha Sword. This a good sword & it had served me well for many levels. Good luck on completing this quests Ladies & Gentlemen. I look forward to adventuring with you all one day.

Lending a helping hand,
Lady Elvaan

Step 3a. If the receptionist just tells you that "this is for arrivals" and the cut scene does not play, return to the Steaming Sheep Restaurant and talk with Powtahan again. He gave me the quest again as if I had not talked with him before. Return to the Air Travel Agency and try again. This time, I got the cut scene.

Why on earth would you do this quest if you are a white mage. The reward is a spatha, a sword, which white mages can't use anyway.

Because once you do this one, and get enough fame, Powhatan gives you a quest that you have to do the same thing but wear a Maul, which, is only equippable by a level 31 WHITE MAGE.

Every quest acts as a gateway to more quests, either by fame or by simple progression.

If your On Alexander and want a shell shield for free send a tell to Aleton. I got 5 of these and keep getting a few here and there.

Not quite so easy
# Nov 12 2003 at 11:12 PM Rating: Default
Ok then. I'm a whm/blm therefore cannot equip the shell shield. No offense but it's not as simply as switching to WAR so i can equip it...because then i have to turn around and lvl WAR to 7 to be able to equip it.
What, no mages have tried this quest yet?
Intelligent ideas and suggestions would be welcomed.

# Dec 15 2003 at 2:15 PM Rating: Default
Well, I primarly play as a 25 WHM, but I leveled up to a 7 WAR while I was doing some easy crystal farming for some fast cash. In about an hour or so, you could easily be level 5, then continue farming crystals until you get to 7.

Maybe sub/main as a RDM to lvl 7 to still have access to your spells and be able to equip the shield?

Just a thought.

I have had a bunch of those shields dropped...they aren't rare, just kill a bunch of the quadavs...
Change Jobs
# Nov 11 2003 at 9:28 PM Rating: Default
This isnt like other MMORPGs, if u cant use the shield, just switch ur job to a warrior, equip it, do the quest, and then switch back.
# Nov 03 2003 at 10:04 PM Rating: Default
Unless you can use a shield, there is no real way to trigger the arrival of the NPC you are to meet. The Shield as a drop is rare, so unless you have a lot of time and patience, buying the shield will be worth the effort. The sword you recieve as a reward is by far one of the better sword type weapons for the level.

Okay, now for some real information...

The Shell Shield drops from the Young Quadavs in North and South Gustaberg. It does not drop from the Amber and Amethyst Quadavs.

On the Bahamut server, Shell Shields are going for around 100 gil each... not a bad price for a decent shield and a really nice sword.

The shield sucks for a warrior. The agility penalty is awful. Causes you to miss most of the time.

It's great to get the sword with, but that's about it for a warrior.

How the hell does AGI make you miss? ( I know this post is years old)
I will wake up at six a.m. again.
and I will find my way to the front door
like a soldier crawling through the smoking carnage.
smoldering bodies at my feet,
I'd love to stick around, but I've got someone to meet.
and I will put my best foot forward.
and I'll thank god I made it out of there
on the day when my new friends come.

You can buy the shell shield in the auction house for like 200-300gil or find it off of quadavs in gustaberg. Easy quest to finish and you get a decent sword out of it.
