Summary

Ensetsu wishes to reclaim an item he has sold to the Tenshodo, but they will not exchange it for anything other than a Strangely Shaped Coral (key item) from the Korroloka Tunnel. You must go and retrieve it for him.

Walkthrough

Talk to Kaede at (J-5) in Port Bastok to begin this quest. After the cutscene, go talk to Kagetora in Warehouse 2, then talk to Ensetsu, who will ask you for a favor.

Make your way to the Korroloka Tunnel. If you're level 30+ (maybe less, but my group and I were at least 30) you shouldn't have to worry about too many aggro mobs. Mobs of interest that should be noted are jellies, bogies, and jammer leeches.

  • Follow the path until you can go left and straight. Turn left at (K-8).
  • Follow the path until you come out the other side, proceed left.
  • When you reach the bridge at (G-9), turn right and cross to the other side.
  • Proceed left. When you reach the junction point between going right and left (D-8), go right.
  • Follow the path, it will go outside, and back in to another tunnel. Continue to follow it until you can go left or right (H-8). Go left.
  • There is usually a lone jelly at this point a party of 3 or more with 1 healer shouldn't worry about it hurting you too much.
  • Continue straight and enter the cave on your left (F-9).
  • Continue to follow the path. DO NOT cross the bridge, simply continue along the right wall.
  • Continue to follow the path until you can go straight or right (H-11). Go right.
  • After this point, you may need to be very careful of Bogies, keep a look out and be ready for them. Invis/Sneak/Deodorize and you can get by.
  • Keep going straight and you'll cross another bridge.
  • When you can go left or right (H-8), go right.
  • Follow that path and at the end of (I-7) turn right again. Bogy warning, one can be waiting for you, maybe 2. They have a large aggro/link range. Proceed with caution.
  • Follow that path, you may or may not see several Bogy. Whether you spell up and run by or fight them, it is your choice.
  • At the end of the path, turn left and go straight to the ??? point.
DO NOT CLICK THE ??? until your group is prepared to fight 3 Korroloka Leeches.

After the leeches are killed, quickly click on the ??? point to get a key item: Strangely Shaped Coral. Head back to Bastok and talk to Ensetsu again. He will send you to Norg. It is recommended that you set your home point to Bastok to make things easy.

If you have never been to Norg before, take the airship to Kazham. Rent a chocobo and head down to the south end of the zone. Fall down one of the holes and head behind a waterfall at (E-11). This is the entrance to Sea Serpent Grotto. Make sure you have Sneak up and hug the right wall until you reach a Stone Door. This will eventually lead you to Norg.

Talk to Ryoma, who is standing near the docks. He will give you a key item: Sealed Dagger. Return to Ensetsu one more time for a cutscene. You will then be able to change jobs to a Ninja.

Battle Details

  • Kill any Thread Leeches near the ??? point, as when the 3 leeches spawn they will link.
  • Should the person that touched the ??? point die, and group members happen to escape unharmed and without aggro. DO NOT RAISE the fallen member unless the Korroloka Leeches are killed. After the timed-event has passed and they vanish, the instant the person who originally touched the ??? point is raised, they will re-appear and more death will result.

This quest is weird in a lot of ways.

She has the samurai armor. She has a great katana in most of the mission's you see her in past like rank 3.

But yet shes supposed to be a ninja?

In other missions neji refers to her as a warrior who makes fun of him.

It just dosn't add up.

Bleh, thinking to deep in a game with catgirls/midjets I suppose

Actually, in ancient Japan, most if not every ninja was a samurai. Ninjas were essential samurai on stealth/assassination missions.

Warrior is just a general term for fighter. I'd gander to call a paladin a warrior.

It should also be noted that any male willing to die by the sword could declare himself a samurai, during that time. There was no quest or goal to reach to become one, you just declared yourself to be one. But that runs along with most every other job/profession in this world.

Bite your evil toungue out! Calling a Paladin a simple warrior, sheesh. Anyone could claim to be a warrior, true. But a Paladin was a fighter sanctified by the Holy church. (hence their ability to use holy/light magic)
As far as fighters claiming to be a samauri, you could claim to be the pope but that dosnt make it so ;)

I'm level 30 redmage and i have my sub job. I went to Bastok Port and talked to Ensetsu. He said to talk to his daughter at the presidents office. But i can't get in there. Do i need to get high ranking in Bastok to do this quest or what?
RE: Starting the Quest
# Jan 12 2004 at 7:38 PM Rating: Default
His eldest daughter is actually not in the President's office, but it's Northwest of it, in a cannon room (armory?). But she isn't part of the quest, so don't fret. After you talk to the youngest daughter, Kaede, you're supposed to talk to Kagetora in Warehouse 1 (the East one) and then you'll go through a conversation with him. After this, you then go to speak to Ensetsu and you are given the quest.

To clarify, the 'Start NPC' does give the quest, but you must speak to the other NPCs (Kaede and Kagetora) before the quest is given by Ensetsu. Good luck with the quest.

All the FAQs and guides I have seen say that Ryoma flags the Ninja job, but in my run through after talking with Ryoma I had to head back to Bastok and talk with Ensetsu before I was flagged for Ninja (very glad I had the foresight to bring a scroll of instant warp with me).
Maybe people thought it was too obvious to mention, but when Ryoma didn't give me the flag at first I was panicing ^_^;;

Coral
# Jan 06 2004 at 10:42 AM Rating: Default
ok i tried the thf using perfect dodge to get the coral and it doesn't work. The leeches have to be killed in order to get the coral. I sat at the ??? spot for 2.5 hours asking any high lvl that pass by the tunnel for help. Finally one friendly JP BST (dunno what lvl but her HP was only around 600-700?) she killed all the leeches without any troubles (she got a clipper pet to help) and I got my coral thanks to her. ^_^

Coral question
# Jan 03 2004 at 1:01 AM Rating: Decent
From the posts I can't tell if you get the coral from the ??? or the NMs. Which is it? Also, if it is from the ???, do you get it before or after you kill the NMs? I'm asking because I don't necessarily mind dying, so long as I get the needed item.
RE: Coral question
# Jan 03 2004 at 3:14 AM Rating: Default
You click on the ???, the three leaches spawn and go straight for the clicker, if I hadnt had a lvl 52 war and a lvl 30 war with me to provoke off me i would have died real fast. After they are dead click the ??? again to recieve the coral. Everyone in party can click on it after the fight to get the coral.

More than one can click on the ??? after the three leeches are killed.

My wife and I were assisted by a very nice high level.

Killed the three leeches. I got the coral.
We medded up just in case. She clicked again and got the coral as well.

Less than 3 mins had passed from when I got the coral and she did. Don't know how long until it resets so don't wait long.

From Kazham:

South to G-7, go down, only one way. First intesection, go straight. Back down through tunnels again. At G-8 go right (west). You will come to a pit, go across it and left, swing right. Go down to next intersection go left (east). Next intersection to straight (east), next intersection go straight (south). Next intersection, should be G-10, go right you'll come out to the outpost. There are two holes to fall down. You want the northern most hole on the western side (G-11). When you fall down, go west and you'll be in the valley. Head to the northern waterfall, behind it to E-11 gets you into the Sea Serpent Grotto.

Once in the Grotto, Sneak/Silent Oil, and keep right, you'll come to a stone door. Click it, continue on up to Norg.

I, also, got the help of a high level adventurer. It's the only way to go, I say. I was with a lvl 61 THF, and she did sneak on me the entire way there, then when I clicked the ???, they aggro'd me, but somehow when I ran away a bit, she took the aggro of all three, then started off'ing 'em in a matter of seconds.

Then, she left me in Rabao, but I got a warp back to Bastok, so I'm not complaining.
Still have to make the way to Norg though. Shouldn't be too hard with enough silent oils, and reraise scrolls.

Here's a bit more info on the coral for those that are determined to try to sneak and grab it instead of killing. I was curious about it myself, so I tested the sneak and grab method.

Here is how the ??? marker works.

1. You must have the NIN quest active for the coral phase for anything to happen.
2. If you have it active and you click the ???, it tries to spawn 3 NM Leeches.
3. If the leeches have not been killed recently and aren't already spawned, it spawns 3 NM Leeches. All 3 leeches are spawned with agro on the clicker. They don't attack anyone else until you provoke, attack, etc.. I jumped far back behind my PLD friends after click, before spawn, and all 3 beelined for me through them. One leech is spawned red even if you don't attack it; ie. invis, sneak, deoderize, etc. will not keep you safe from the spawn.
4. If the leeches have been killed recently, it says something to the effect of "Nothing happens."
5. If you click on ??? again after you get the "Nothing happens" message, you get the Coral key item.
--
6. [guessing] Once you get the coral, it likely resets and will probably spawn 3 more NM leeches. This possibility might be of some concern to any trying to do this for more than one person; eg. pack of over-eager clickers might kill you.

Now that I know this much about how the ??? Coral works, there is one more potential open for testing that might work. It's worth testing if you're solo and have silent oil with you to avod the Bogies, but I would not count on it working. You could click ??? to spawn, click ??? again and (hopefully) get the nothing-happens message, then click a third time and perhaps get the coral. You would need to be a THF main job to do that and use perfect dodge to give yourself time for the 3 clicks and flee to run away (the W.Altepa zone is quite close).

Other than that rather slim hope there, you should count on having to kill all 3. If you bring a RDM or BRD to sleep the two you aren't actively killing and pre-kill the roaming leeches to avoid adds, my bet is that these would be an easy kill for any level 30 group.

--

Here's how to find the coral. First, you want the Korrolakan Tunnel map. You can certainly get by without it, but I'm going to assume you have it. The map is only sold in Rabao and it costs 3k. Your path is Korroloka Tunnel, West Altepa Desert, Rabao. Agro critters on path: jellies and scorpion in tunnel, antonican and scorpion in desert. Spiders, bugs, crabs, and bats are not agro, but some will pounce if you sit to heal.

Korroloka Tunnel Map
West Altepa Desert Map

Follow the path to W.Altepa. If you stay on the ledges, the only thing you might have to dodge is a jelly and it's so slow, you can easily run away without flee, though it will chase you all the way to the zone and might prove annoying to others. So, buy your maps; 3k for Korroloka, 3k for Altepa, 3k for Kuftal, 3k for hmm, forgot last one. Bring gil. Now go back to tunnel.

From the W.Altepa zone line in Korrolaka, if you hug the left (N/E) wall, you will eventually reach K8 and th corral. You don't really want to hug that wall when you walk it, but if you look at the map, you can see which spots you can skip to reach your goal by thinking "hug left". You'll see the Bogy farm before you reach it. Or, looking at the map, you can run along the right side (S/W) to the bridge. From the bridge, nonchalantly jump into the swarming horde of Bogies and saunter east and a tad north to K8 and the coral.

BTW, I'm assuming you're capable of dealing with the things along the path one way or another; eg. silent oil = bogy will never attack you or you can just kill them.
Yet more information
# Jan 12 2004 at 7:51 PM Rating: Default
All right, I have to say I did attempt the silent oil and was very suprised when I wasn't attacked while trying to grab the coral. The leeches literally did not move an inch after I clicked (I had already applied silent oil prior), and I was hoping that a few more clicks would yield some results. That is far from the truth, after my silent oil had run out and my status effect was gone, I was pumbled by the leeches and was getting hit for around 40-60DMG (MNK30/WAR10) minus the other leeches that I hadn't killed off (so a group of 30s literally could take these on one/two at a time, but would have trouble getting there together safely due to someone surely not being careful). I asked three linkshell friends to help me (and brought a lucky person who happened to be wandering around), one being a RDM52 and another a WHM40. This was quite simple, and the Norg parade went well except two deaths going through the Grotto. Good luck with the quest.

Here's how to reach Norg, assuming you already know how to reach Kazham.

Yuhtunga Jungle Map
Seaserpent Grotto Map

Quick description: Jungle -> G5 -> H5 -> drop in hole -> H11 -> tunnel -> D11 -> Serpent's Grotto -> M3 -> sneak/invis -> H6 -> drop invis & open door -> F3 -> Norg

If you can't cast invis and sneak, bring someone with you who can or bring prism powder and silent oil (6k/12 in AH or about 900 each on Bismarck). Rent a chocobo in Kazham. Go due south to the outpost. This will no doubt involve many false turns and tunnels as you blunder about trying to find the way, but you're on a choco, so it won't matter. There are two holes in the ground in the clearing with the outpost. Drop in the wrong one and it loops you back to the clearing to try again. Drop in the right one and you end up in the Hidden Valley area with the waterfalls. Flap on over to the tunnel behind the waterfall and bid your choco adieu at the zoneline.

Zone in (it should be safe unless recently trained). Put sneak and invis on. Dash to the secret door (hug right wall). Remove invis, open the door, dash north to Norg. Sneak alone will probably be enough, since most things are undead, but the cost is cheap, so you might as well invis, too.

Why is this so impossible? After searching for people to help for 2.5 hours, we went in for **** and giggles as a 31 war and 30 thf. I (thf) died with only 4 hits from the leeches. Arrr.

Do any other servers have the weird phenomenon that players in Bastok and Sandoria don't help each other out at all, yet people in Windurst jump to team up?

You don't get flagged to be a ninja in Norg like this (and every other) guide says. Once you get the sword key item from the Tenshodo member in Norg, you have to return it to the father in Bastok. Once that happens, there is a touching cut scene between the father and daughter. The father rewards you for bringing back the sword with the ability to use the ninja job.

No one seems to describe exactly how to get to the leech area, either. Unfortunately, I didn't have a map, so I can't really explain either, but I'll try to give a vague guide. In Korroloka near the entrance, there is a narrow tunnel that splits off of the large main tunnel before it goes down to a bunch of spiders. You want to go that way and cross over some bridges. You're going the right way if one of the bridges goes over a bunch of bogys. We jumped down from there and sneaked past the bogys, and I believe the ??? was not far past that.

That's a bit of a hyperbole there. As a 30/15 THF/MNK with rather poor DEF (level 10 armor), they hit me for 50-70. That implies they'd hit a warrior or other armored tanking class for maybe 40-50. I was with two high level paladins (62 and 70). They killed all three leeches with one large AE attack and a couple hits each. I only had time to land one sneak attack.

I never saw the PLD's hp bar move. Likely this means they healed and I didn't notice it because it was over so fast.
