Summary

A lump of Bomb Steel and a Sacred branch are required to make a new katana. You will have to ask Jaucribaix's pupils to find out where you can get these items.

Walkthrough

To begin this quest, you will need to speak to Jaucribaix in Norg.

To get there, rent a chocobo in Kazham and head all the way south to the outpost. Stay in Yuhtunga Jungle and beware the holes. Two are connected to each other and will bring you back out to the Outpost and another will take you nowhere. You will need to fall through the hole nearest to the waterfall. Head outside and straight towards the right side of the waterfall as you see it. This will take you to Sea Serpent Grotto.

Once at Sea Serpent Grotto, you want to either have Sneak on you or use silent oil. Once you are set, stick to your right and make every possible right turn you can. Eventually you'll reach a Stone Gate. Click on it to open it. Remember to recast sneak/silent oil if it wears off. Proceed the same way guiding it to the right, you'll get to some steps and you'll see a series of arches on that path. This leads to Norg.

Once in there, go to the right and you can either go up through the path on your right (past the chocobo). Go all the way to the end of the hall and you'll find Jaucribaix. Talk to him and he'll tell you about the ways of a samurai and inform you he needs a Bomb Steel and Sacred Branch. Next, go down the long steps and talk to Aeka, she'll give you the Oriental Steel. To the left of the steps somewhere in the back is Ranemaud, he'll give you the Sacred Sprig.

To get back to Kazham from Norg, rent a chocobo. As you head out, guide it to the left and you'll find a path that takes you up (don't try to go back the same way you came in, because you CANNOT). Once you are on the level above just keep going all the way North to Kazham.

The Sanctuary of Zi'Tah

To get to the Sanctuary, rent a chococo in Port Jeuno and head out to Sauromugue Champaign and zone into Meriphataud Mountains. From there, head East and go to Zi'Tah, you can see it on your map at (M-4). You can also reach the Meriphataud Mountains from Tahrongi Canyon.

Make sure you have at least one hatchet with you and go east to (K-10), where you will find a sort of tunnel. Go through it all the way to (L-9) (this point doesn't show on the map) and look for a ??? on a huge tree. Use your hatchet on the ??? and a Guardian Treant will spawn. Defeat it and obtain the the Sacred Sprig. Trade the sprig to the ??? and you'll receive the Sacred Branch.

Konschtat Highlands

Go to (D-8) and head into a tunnel. At the end there will be a ???. When ready, trade the Oriental Steel to the ??? and Forger will spawn. Defeat it and he will drop a Bomb Steel.

Once you have both items, head back to Norg and talk to Jaucribaix. During the cutscene, Gilgamesh will appear and say your reward will be ready in 3 days (3 real life hours). Return after this time and you'll receive the Mumeito and the ability to become a Samurai.

3 NM checklist

Went to Norg today to unlock nin, I decided to unlock sam as well since I stumbled on the quest looking for a map vendor.

The NM leeches for the nin quest were ez as pie as a 48rdm/24blm. Forger however, put up a fight.

My total hp atm is 747, and after he broke my Stoneskin, he was hitting me for about 50-70 dmg. Never underestimate the power of Paralyze. With Paralyze and Slow on him he wasn't hitting nowhere near as much, and I was able to recast my buffs.

Couple of Water II's and Burning Blades finished him off. He did get me in the red though, so I had to bust out a Cure IV. Easily would've killed me if I didn't know what I was doing.

Gonna go kill the tree now. Will edit afterwards.

As a Whm, I don't believe you can solo Forger. He attacks quite rapidly and will keep interrupting your spells. I tried to solo this guy as a Blm50 and had to warp out (before dying).

I'm not if you can solo the Guardian Treant, but if you can get help for Forger, have them help with the Trant.

Soloed Forger as a LV56 THF/NIN - opened up with an SA+Hide, which hit him for 356 damage, and from there it was a battle of attrition. He hit me from between 45-80 dmg whenever he landed an attack, which wasn't overly often; he did a total of 200 dmg to me before he died, which was after about a minute of battle. I had +ATK -EVA gear on at the time, I probably wouldn't have been hit even that often if I'd take off the -EVA gear first.
bare minimum

Solo'd the tree today as elvaan 48drg/24war with +acc/dex gear and a chiefkabob since I couldn't find any help. He got me down to 139 hp by the end.

The bomb I found help for but it seemed I could have easily solo'd him.

So yes these are soloable even pre-50 in case you had doubt.

As a level 45 monk, I just soloed this to get the rare/ex items out of my mog house. Forger was a bit tougher than I expected, but the Guardian Treant was a piece of cake.

Just soloed the whole thing as a 54pld/27war. The tree had me down to 820 or so hps at the end. Only cure IIIed once, cast on flash just for laughs and used banish II (which did 121 dmg). And yes, the tree swings often but it missed me alot. I also buffed with Protect III and Shell II. I went in prepared as a lvl 53 pld said he would not be able to solo the tree. Well, that was a lie.

The bomb took me 20 seconds or so. Swing away, Red Lotus Blade, swing away. Didnt have to cure myself once. Light magic didnt seem to do dmg though, banish II did 51 dmg. Oh I had 807hps left with out curing once.

The worst part about this whole quest (for me) was all the running around. If you can have a lvl 40+ blm and 36+whm with you things will go much faster.

Edit:
Yes, the time on the bomb is an exageration.

A party of 2, both lvl 45: BST/RDM and PLD/WAR was able to do this without any problems, using the lvl 43 rabbit jug pet. The bomb was very easy and the treant was pretty easy. In Zi'Tah, we had sneak on us both and just dodged the Gobs (had chocobo's for most of it, but could have had them for all of it). Don't forget the hatchet.

I just soloed this thing as a MNK56/THF25. I finished the fight with with about 913/1303 life left. It was relatively easy for me..but let me tell you. Thing hits hard and swings VERY often. I think to open the fight he swung like 4 or 5 times in a row. So this thing could cause some problems for any lower than 50 trying to solo it.

Just finished this quest with a few other people (lvl 36 whm who didn't have items) and a lvl 30 war. Started with Forger. First time through had to use Manafont since the war didn't draw his sword until the bomb was at half health. 2nd fight an earth elemental spawned in the middle of the fight. That was a good thing, gave me something to aspir so i could nuke the heck out of both.

The Treant was easy since the warrior had a high level drk join the party (thank you Cocyuts). The Drk just owned the Treant. Anyways this quest might be soloable by a few classes, but black mages out there you probably need a tank.

Just my thoughts on the quest.

Well i just soloed this badass quest today as a THF50/NIN25

First part, the bomb i did with the help of a rdm58 as we were running through and we both happened to have our oriental steel with us and beat it twice within the recast of sneak attack each time. Real easy fight at this level.
Second part i did solo later on as i had nothing better to do while waiting for static so i went for the treant solo. This guy took a lot longer to come down a good 4 minutes i'd say. I hate Utsusemi and sneak up when i spawned him, which gave me time to go sneak attack him w/o aggro. Then Hojo and Kurayami, mostly missed recast utsu like 3 times and took about 75 dmg total just hit for crap 10 dmg per hit. gust slash did help at about 105 per hit.

Hope this helps to you guys getting all jobs hehe.

Ok...i really want samurai and i have my ls of 5 lvl 50's to help me. Problem is they want samurai too, will we have to kill the 2 NM 6x or will it drop enough for all of us. If we do have to kill it six times, how long will we have to wait until we can spawn them again. One last thing, do we need to stay in the game for all three hours or can we leave and then come back. Thank you all.

P.S. This Websight rocks my world, it is a great place to learn about quests items and such! Thank You Allakhazam!

As far as the Bomb and Trent go, that is true. You must fight bomb over and over until all members trade each item, and the Trent is just a once kill... all trade.

As far as the wait goes, i logged off and went to class for a couple hours on campus here. So no, you DO NOT have to be logged in-game the whole time.

Just did this quest with my ls :P Lvl 52, 50. 43, 41, 36, and two 30's. We were all doing the quest. :P With Bomb Steel you will each need to trade your oriental steel to trigger the spawn, but it's no biggie cause there is only a 3 min respawn between trades.

With Guardian treant it's VERY important to take along a hatchet! lol we didn't know we needed one so it took a bit to backtrack and get one. You only have to kill the Guardian Treant once. After it's dead simply trade you sprig to the ??? and recieve your item. With a party of 50's it should be a sinch for you . As for waiting i'm not certain i just parked myself infront of NPC and watched tv for 3 hours. Good Luck!

I just managed to solo both these at 45THF/22RNG. The treant was the hardest and it used up my 2hr (Perfect Dodge) and a couple of X potions just to be on the safe side but I managed to finish both fights with 300hp left. I prepared for Forger by getting 300TP and slugging a Pamana au Lait and then just kept firing Ice Arrows into him. The treant took some killing but I used a silent oil before using the hatchet to allow me to get a Sneak Attack in first. I then filled him full of Fire arrows.

Just got to get myself back to Norg now.

I had first attempted this flag quest about a week ago. I had read in forums and heard word through other friends on Bismark that this quest takes a couple hours, including the 3 hour wait at the end. So i had asked the LS who would want to take part in this long quest, and to my suprise we ended up with an allience at the end of it all.

My advise to everyone attempting this quest... IF YOU ARE LVL 30 AND ON YOUR WAY TO NORG, GET SNEAK (and invis for safe measure) AND RUN YOU *** OFF TO NORG... with this being said, i was an unfortunate Warrior who's Sneak wore off with in the chamber before Norg and got aggroed by 3 skeletons. This was quite a disapointment because i de-lvled to 29, but not by much. Fortunately a RDM was passing by and Tractored us to safety in a hallway. Got a raise and got a heal, but forgetting the Sneak i was told by the RDM to run like hell... not a smart thing, more skeletons aggroed and of course died with my sickness. After getting another raise and foolishly accepting it, died yet again. All in all, i had lost a solid 800+ exp by those bloody skeletons!

So even before starting this quest, the 2 WHM and other WAR all decided to plvl me back to 30. How you may ask, by fighting extremely difficult Ironshells! i HIGHLY suggest to anyone just set HP in norg and then tele out to someplace a little easier. with them plvling, it took and extra 3 hours to get 800 exp. Each fight took us at least 15 min with a 30 WAR (at low armor value and attack value) and a 32 WAR (whom was missing some armor pieces) and the 2 WHM healing on and off (both around lvl 40). Keep in mind that this also includes multiple and multiple zones from other people, so we were also leaving to zone into norg to aviod trains of Ironshells and skeletons!

But onto the flag quest, it did not take long at all. Just get the items from the students and <teleport - dem> to fight the bomb, then <teleport - Holla> and run to Zi'Tah to kill the tree. Go back to Norg and wait for 3 hours to get your title and great katana!

One last bit of the story is a shout out to one of the funniest guys on Bismark. Phrangelico who was in the allience part of the group was late to kill the tree, but was in the zone when he was killed, so he should still get the quest item. Come time to trade the student item for the quest item this is how it goes down...

Phrang - "how do i get it? it wont work!"

An extra 15-10 min go by...

Phrang - "what do i do with the Sacred Branch?"
Me (Bloodmoon) - "you HAVE the SACRED BRANCH in your inventory already?"
Phrang - "lol, yeah..."
Me - "THAT IS THE ITEM"

After a sheer moment of anger and frustration from those helping, the entire LS bursts into laughter. This was truely one of my most memorable moments in Vana'diel.

The morals of the story: The <Samurai> flag quest is not long at all, just a long wait. And, if you are a 30 WAR, just run like hell through <Sea Serpent Ghrotto> b/c you WILL die if sneak wears off! /sigh

lol aaaah i'll always fondly remember that night (^_^) was so chaotic and yet so much fun. I swear, that helmet i had to buy for my 32 ninja looked so gay on me. (i was ninja remember? My warrior is only level 12 *sweatdrop*)
I wish that night's experience at getting the quest done was as easy for you as when i was helping my bf get Samurai. We were able to duo the bomb and the tree, me being a level 36 thief and he was a level 37 whitemage. I always felt like i should have posted what we did to let people know how we duoed it, but i'm too lazy (^_^)"" If anyone's curious they can just send me a tell or somethin.

lol ^^ i think getting to norg is easy, its a puny amount distance. all u gotta do is stay to the right side (seriously u could do it blindfolded) and ur in norg. well u gotta open the doors but 90% of the time there open. o ya sneak is important only for skeletons. i could dodge everything else. pretty wide area i think.
I actually think if a pld or theif tapped that 2 hour during it he could almost make it the WHOLE way lol. just thought id throw that in for free.
Kylare's Samurai Adventure! Part I
# Oct 23 2004 at 3:19 AM Rating: Excellent
Well… we decided to tackle this bad boy this evening, hell, we had a couple hours to kill, and what better thing to do than to get Sam, right? Right. I’m a story teller, so sit back, light a smoke, drink a drink… or whatever it is that people do when they read forum posts :) I am typing this as I am set to auto-follow during our 30 minute hike between part 1 and part 2 of the quest…

Let’s start off with the party:
40 Pld/War (Whom is from my LS and has earned the nickname “Stallion” by me)
30 Rdm/Drk (Me, and don’t ask me why I had Drk subbed, I still don’t know)
30 Rdm/Blm
30 War/Mnk

First, I feel as though I should give you, the reader a little background on my char, the rdm was the first job I played, and, well, it’s a pretty expensive job I have discovered, between the spells and trying to keep up the gear… so I’m pretty far behind on gear, but not so far behind on spells… now, on with the story!

After spending a whopping 3k for a map which does practically <i>NO</i> good whatsoever, and riding around in circles for 5 minutes, we finally made it to the waterfall. Let me tell you, sneak makes a WORLD of difference when you’re going through the Sea Serpent Grotto. Make sure you refresh it before you run through the closed off wall, since we had a nice train of 7-8 skeletons and a couple crabs chasing us, and dropped the War in a heartbeat.

We grabbed a Tele-Dem, we pretty much had our way with the Forager, who just kind of appeared, then disappeared a couple minutes later. As a side note, the Pld has sort of outdated equipment (level =/- 30) and with protect II (202 def), the Forager still hit him for minimum 50+ damage a pop… up to 130 with berserk.

If you ever have to go without a whm, I would suggest two rdms at least, or something which can cast cure I repeatedly, I’d just non stop cast (after your Dia and other enfeebling spells, of course) it if you could, it ends up restoring more when it comes down to the same MPs being spent.

After a lovely “mandatory” 5 minute break because the computer decided it would disconnect me (anyone else have this problem with the game just not receiving anything and then kicks you off?) the other rdm fell asleep at the keyboard… go figure… so we left his butt in the party, in case he came back to his senses, and started hoofing it to Selbina to take the boat to Mhaura… which we missed as it pulled away when we paid to get on (don’t you hate it when that happens?)

Now… here’s the problem… we have completed one half of the quest… how are you going to find a whm or someone else who can at least cast some cure spells who has the quest items? Aahh… you can’t without waiting 45 minutes for them to get to Jeuno, and then back! And who has that kind of time? I sure as hell don’t! Well, I do, but my eyes are beginning to hurt, so I don’t want to suffer the same fate as the other redmage (who, BTW, is still online, asleep at his keyboard) So, now we’re down to our lovely, studly Paladin (who still has his smashing 2 hour) myself (the rdm) and a 30 war, who is nothing more than cannon fodder, right? (side note: the second rdm is still in the party, and asleep at the keyboard, since we are now staring off into the sea on the docks at Selbina, my fishing rod is <i>broken</i>, and I can only read so many posts of the Warrior scratching his… well… you know!)

Well, after a nice long uneventful boat ride (nothing spawned, except the Sea Horror, which popped up about a minute before we docked) we hoofed it up to the Sanctuary of Zi’Tah to meet with everyone’s favorite Guardian Treant. While hiking through the Meriphataud Mountains, almost at Sanctuary, I asked if anyone had brought any hatchets… of course, everyone stopped in their tracks and said no. after letting them sweat for a minute I informed them I was carrying three (I know it was kinda mean, but hey, it was pretty funny)

Strolling through the Sanctuary, without a map, but no worries, we don’t have far to go, right? WRONG! We’re nearly at the tunnel, when a smithy is in our way, it sees us and aggros, no problem… we’ve got out mighty 40th level Pld at the ready, I cast my enfeebling magic, and from just outside of our vision range, along came a rock golem IT++ to me, and guess who it aggros? Well… needless to say, I was dead in two hits, and the other two members fled the fight right before I died… so while fleeing apperantly they ran into a couple more monsters and to make a long story short, everyone is dead, and the four level 75 people in the area (who I noted were there, but didn’t ask for help because I would rather do it myself without super high level help, you can understand that, right?)

Well, four and a half hours (yes, it took us that long, and we even used a tele) and I’m 29th level… well, it’s 1:15 in the morning, I’m a little aggravated, but I hope you enjoyed the story, the ups, the downs, and our misfortunes :) the game gets on all our nerves sometimes, but hey, it’s a game, can’t do much else about it now, just take a little break, come back and try it again.

I hope all you people who actually TRY to play the game have a better chance than we did, and for those of you who recruit high level help… *shrugs*

Until next time… May fortune rain upon those who deserve it…

I have been wanting to do this quest for some time now i have all the items needed but i have been wondering if i could do it by myself.
Currently i am an elvaan blm lvl 56. I guess i could always use Burst on the mob to help kill it and im sure me being elvaan with all the hp i have would help.
