Summary

While transcribing an ancient manuscript, Hariga-Origa finds a smudge that makes the writing unreadable. He wants you to help find an item that will clear the nasty blot away.

Walkthrough

If you have just completed Chasing Tales, you must zone before you can get this quest. If you talk to

Talk to Hariga-Origa to start the quest. If he doesn't give it to you, your fame is too low. Check with Zabirego-Hajigo. You need level 4 fame.

Hariga-Origa asks for a Slime Oil (drops from various slime creatures), and a Frost Turnip (bought from the Auction House or Zoreen in Port Windurst (M-7)).

Trade him the two items to complete the quest and receive your rewards: A Map of Fei'Yin and 3,000 gil.

Need fame level 4 to start quest
# Jun 27 2007 at 7:38 AM Rating: Decent
I couldn't start this quest, even after doing Glyph Hanger, Early Bird, Chasing Tales quests.
The problem was that I didn't have enough windy fame, not that I was from Bastok. I only had level 2 fame, I just traded in ~50 cornets to get my fame to level 4. I could start the quest and I now have my map of Fei'Yin :)
how to get quest
# Jun 05 2007 at 10:06 PM Rating: Decent
Anyone can get this quest.
First you have to do the quests Glyph Hanger, Early Bird, Chasing Tales, then ZONE.
Come back to Hariga-Origa and he SHOULD give you the quest.

You don't have to be windurstian to get this quest >.< Or else only windurst would have a map to fei'yin >.>;;
am I right?
# Feb 11 2007 at 7:29 PM Rating: Decent
Have I got this right. Only citizens of Windhurst can get this Map since you have to do a mission as a prereq.

There is no mission prequest for this quest. Nor do i think there is a quest that had a Mission prequest as part of its pre-requisets.

Though Mission 2-3 for sandy Chateau d'Oraguille enterance is needed for non sandy ppl, i think its mission 2-1 for sandy ppl

Please help!

I'm Rank 6, Hero fame, have done Glyph Hanger, Early Bird, Chasing Tales, a total of 40 quests. I'm at a loss for what to do....he will not give me the quest.

I have also read ALL the postings, and have talked to everyone in the optistery, zoned back and forth a million times.

Does anyone think this has something to do with me already going to Fei'Yin and doing the Shadow Lord battle for Rank 6 or the fact that I accepted the Optistery's "Heaven Cent" quest? I'm also trading in more crystals in order to increase my rank points.

I'M SO CONFUSED!!!
total frustration
# Apr 17 2006 at 7:45 AM Rating: Decent
did all the pre-req's for this and had the "every-
one in windhurst has heard of your deeds" lvl of fame and still couldn't get it, so out of pure frustration I ran around and talked to every NPC in the Opistery and VOILA! When I went back he gave me the quest, I gave him the turnip and slime oil and he gave me the map! What a pain in the posterior!!!

RE: Fame

Just keep doing the quests around the npc he will eventually give you the quest. And don't forget you have to be able to do the pre-req quests first. ;)

I got my fame the cheapo way...I went to Bastok (while they were second in the conquest) and bought an inventory full of cornettes at the instrument shop in Markets, and traded them to the guy in walls who asks for strange things mandragora drop (I believe the quest is Mandragora Mad) and I got this quest. Mind you, I had about level 1-2 fame at the time, but now I have at least 4 (I haven't checked it yet, lol).

As for doing it, I suggest paying the whole 1k for slime oil on the AH and then going to the cultarian's guild for the turnip. The map is used in various quests and missions, so it's a pretty easy quest to do for the reward you get.

This Quest was a pain in the ***... BUT well worth it... i now have the map... here is what i did

17 Windurst Quests, and i turned in 3 stacks of Sardines 1 at a time at Port Windurst NPC - Tokaka located at C-8. That gave me rank 4 Windy fame and did all the Prerequisates for this quest and got it.

Right now i have 3 more stacks of sardines left and gonna turn them all in 1 at a time and see how far my rank will go up... ill re-post in an hour or so when im done :-D

Update:

Took me awhile to get to rank 5... turned in 24 Bastore Sardines... still rank 4, then ive decided to turn in Cornette's and BAM! Rank 5, i only turned in 13 Cornette's after turning in 2 stacks of sardines. but if you have the money, just buy Cornette's they will build your fame faster than doing that annoying Sardine Quest.!

# Nov 03 2005 at 1:18 PM Rating: Decent
I did the Cornette Quest atleast 155 times. Is that enough to activate this quest?

# Feb 09 2006 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
LOL at 155.. you are between fame 7-9 (9 hero) me on the other hand hard to get fame since bastok hasnt been in first place for uhhhhhhh..... well ummm..... like uhhh... ok lets just say its been over a couple months :"( so back to the fish and beehive chips :"(

After building up enough Fame (Lvl 4...I'm from San D'Oria), I was able to activate this quest and got the map! Lucky for the taru mages of Windy! I was on the verge of declaring war on them all! lol
So you have to do the previous quests (Glyph Hanger..Early Bird...Chasing Tales (Lvl 3 Fame req'd) and have Lvl 4 Fame to open Smudge On One's Record quest.

Frost Turnips

To buy Frost Turnips, visit your friendly, neighborhood Valdeaunia vendor.

Tibelda- Bastok Mines (E-6)
Palguevion- North San d'Oria (F-6)
Zoreen- Port Windurst(M-7)

The country that controls the region has the vendor, so at most only one of them will sell it over the week. Check out /rmap to see who controls the region. If beastmen control Valdeaunia you cannot get them from regional vendors.

Or if San d'Oria is in first place, Aveline at Raimbroy's Grocery store in Southern San d'Oria (F-7). (You may have to be a San d'Orian resident to be able to buy them, I cannot remember for sure.)

Also, the hares in Ulegrande Range also occasionally drop Frost Turnips, but the drop rate is kind of low, and they are pretty high level mobs.

It depends on the conquest placements. If Windy is in first place, they will have it, but if it is in last, they will most likely not. This goes for all other NPC shops in cities.
RE: Frost Turnip
# Sep 11 2006 at 7:29 AM Rating: Decent
If you are looking to buy a frost turnip from an NPC you can only do so when the city that the NPC is in has control of Valdeaunia.

Example:
If Windurst currently has control of Valdeaunia you can buy the frost turnip from the Glaka NPC in Port Windurst.

If the Valdeaunia is currently under beastmen control then the only place you can get a frost turnip is from AH (you will be lucky, I am on Garuda server and I have only ever seen one for sale at AH) or by farming it.

Hope that helps someone.

Thanks everyone for their info on this quest. It took me a long time to get this because I wasn't sure why I didn't get the quest.

I started off with rank4 fame in windy and still didn't get this. I did the following 3 Quests
Glyp Hanger, Early Bird gets the Worm, and Chasing Tales.

After doin my last quest Chasing Tales, I zoned out and zoned back in and I was able to get the quest.

When I got this quest, I had already done the two Overdue Book quests, and the Glyph Hanger quest, with Hero Windhurst fame.
how its done...
# Apr 14 2005 at 9:34 PM Rating: Good
i must have had the most boring time trying to master this quest, if you are having trouble this should clear it up..

first off, i bought 4 stacks of bastore sardines and traded them to Tokaka at C-8 in port windurst. you have to talk to her, trade a sardine, zone and do it again, 1 at a time. it takes forever i know, i spent a whole day doing this.. first i traded 2 stacks.. 1 sardine at a time, then i went off and did Glyph Hanger, Early Bird Catches the Bookworm, and Chasing Tales (3 windy quests that you can look up).. after that, i still didnt have enough fame, so i went back and painfully traded another 2 stacks of sardines.. 1 at a time, zoning etc.., so in total i traded 4 stacks of bastore sardines, did those three quests, (I'm not sure if my being rank 6 made it easier as far as getting less fame was concerned), and i was finally able to accept this quest from that fricking lil tarutaru.. hopefully this will shine the light on some questions

6. Trade him. Get your reward. Finished
The Map Quest
# Feb 22 2005 at 5:11 PM Rating: Decent
So, I just did the quest before and I wanna write down my experience here.

What I did?

1. I talk to Hariga-Origa and he gave me a quest A Smudge on One's Record. After I did that, I warp to HP and come back and talk to him again. I couldn't get the quest.

2. I did the first book quest in Giddeus. Complete that, warp to HP

3. I did the second book quest which I need to goto Sandy. Warp back, completed the quest, talked to Hariga-Origa and didn't get the quest.

4. So I tried to zone again (warp to hp) and came back, and supprise! I got the quest. Trade the 2 items to him and got 3k and the map.

Infos: I only have Fame 3 in Windy and only completed 8 windy quests.

I hope my experience can help those to get the map easier.

p.s: I'm from Bastok, so you don't need to be from Windy to get this quest.

Are there really quests that you can only do if you're from that country or do people just confuse missions and quests. Missions can only be done if you're from that nation. I've never heard of a quest I couldn't do because I'm from another country. Oh well.
RE: The Map Quest
# Mar 09 2005 at 1:33 AM Rating: Decent
i think the only 'quest' you cant get unless ur from that nation at the missions and those arent quest never heard of quest thats spefici to a certain nation not u might need certain rank or fame to get quest but thats diffrent

Some quests require that you reach a certain Rank in your hometown (Rank 3 to be precise). This will let you into areas that you normally are not allowed into. E.g. Heavens Tower, The Chatteau, and The Basok capital thingy.
Outside of that, the only other thing I have heard of was something involving the gate to Toraimoria canal... But, I am nowhere near a high enough lvl to even attempt that quest, and I am from windy:). And worst case scenerio... just go through the three mage gate if you don't have the key for the gate in Windy...

The walkthrough says that you must complete a Windurst mission. What about non-citizens of Windurst? Does it just check rank? I have at least decently high fame in Windy, don't know exact, and I can't get the Early Bird quest even.

The walkthrough is wrong about the prerequisites. I'm rank 9 Bastokan with hero Windy fame. I was able to go to treasure room and trade silver beastcoin without any problem. What confused me for a little bit was the named yagudo (Uu Zhoumo) that is in front of the door to the treasure room. He kept repeating:

"Me be keeper of treasure chamber. Hoot! Me be differing from brethren in not liking to fight. Smoothskin have no business here! Should leave now!"

I originally thought I had to talk to him to gain access to the room. After a minute or two of cursing my wife told me to try to target the door instead and that worked. Everything else went smoothly.

Hope this helps...if it did.. rate me up^^

There are two quests you must complete before you can get the Fei'yin map quest. They are below:

1. Early Bird Catches The Bookworm
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Windurst&fquest=177

2. Chasing Tales
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=Windurst&fquest=201

Be sure to zone after completing each quest to get the next.

After you have completed these two quests, you can then get access to A Smudge on One's Record.
