Mission Orders

Determine the state of affairs in San d'Oria and Bastok, and render assistance on behalf of Heavens Tower. Inquire at our consulate in each country for more information.
Traveling by ship from Mhaura to Selbina is recommended.

Walkthrough

This is a VERY long quest and is divided into TWO parts that will VARY depending on WHICH one city you visted first. I suggest completing either sub-job quest (The Old Lady from Vera in Mhaura or Elder Memories from Isacio in Selbina) before attempting this. Getting a Chocobo License and the maps to Palborough Mines/Ghelsba Outpost/Giddeus is advised. In addition, the maps to all the main cities are a good idea.

After talking to the Gate Guard talk to Kupipi in Heavens Tower. She will explain the mission. You might want to start the Rock Racketeer quest from Windurst before leaving town.

Bastok First

The Windurstian embassy is located at the top of Metalworks. Talk to the Ambassador Patt-Pott to receive this part of the mission.

Head to the President's office at (K-8) to talk to Pius and learn the importance of Mythril Sand to the beastmen. Lastly, meet up with Grohm in the Metalworks Craftsmen's Eatery where he will tell you the procedures and happenings in Palborough Mines and then give you 3 pickaxes. Before heading out, you might want to buy some more pickaxes from Boytz's Knickknacks at (H-7) in Bastok Mines. In additon, buy a Map of Palborough Mines from Karine in Bastok Markets or Rex in Port Bastok.

Head off to Palborough Mines via North Gustaburg at (K-3). After entering, go to (I-8) and use the elevator to get to the 3rd floor. Now head to (I-9) on the map. You'll find several spots called Mythril Seams where you can do some mining for the gravel. Trade the "pickaxe" to that spot. You may fail a few times, so keep trying until you get some Mine Gravel. This is the same spot for the Rock Racketeer quest. Note: this is very difficult if you do this solo at level 20, therefore it is recommended that you party with at least one other person.

After getting the item, go to the 2nd level. Head to the middle of the map at (I-6) by going around the right side of the map. You'll see a machine with a lid and a lever. Trade the mine gravel you got to the lid, then pull the lever.

Continue the path to the left side of the map, around and back to the area under the machine. You'll see a lever there too. Pull it and receive an item Mythril Sand. Go back to the embassy and trade that item to the Ambassador.

San d'Oria - The Dragon

In Northern San d'Oria head to the Consulate of Windurst. First of all talk to be the Ambassador. You will be told to talk to Halver in Chateau d'Oraguille. You will need a Ghelsba Outpost map. As well you might want to start The General's Secret quest from Curilla (Temple Knights' Quarters, Chateau d'Oraguille) since the water is right by the end of this mission. To prepare make sure you have a FULL party and you are ready to fight the dragon. If you have anyone over level 25 make sure they have under level 25 equipment since they will de-level for the boss.

Head to Fort Ghelsba and go all the way to the top. There are some huts, behind which is a tunnel leading into the mountains. (You can also get here from Yughott Grotto by hugging the wall to the left as soon as you enter Ghelsba). At Fort Ghelsba you need to head into one of the huts at (J-8) to get to the last area, Yughott Grotto. Once you enter the top of the mountains there are two exits -- one to the burning circle and the other to the springs, for The General's Secret quest.

Prepare yourself and enter the burning circle. There are two monsters: a floating eye called a Spotter and then the Dread Dragon. Don't bother with buffs since the dragon will remove them all in the first few seconds. Kill the floating eye first, then the dragon.

Once done you are sitting in the springs. Heal up and head back to the Consulate of Windurst and pick up your Adventurers Letter from Kasaroro.

Finally, battered but defiant, make your way back to Heavens Tower in Windurst and receive your well earned rewards.

Congratulations on RANK 3 and 3000 gil!

Update Notes

As of February 14th, 2011, there is no longer a level cap restriction on the mission battlefield.

I just soloed this one as 25 Rdm/Nin . I died 3 times before i finally found good tactic for this though .

Inside i casted all buffs ofcourse ( prot , shell , aquavile , enfire , utsu )
Rested to full and then rushed into arena . First i slept dragon ( sleeping Eye without Elemntal seal seems almost impossible ) after that i engaged Eye . Meeling , debuffing ( paralyze , blind ) , cure II ,WS ,Yagudo drinks , Hi-ether , recasting utsusemi ( and sleeping few times Dragon ) - thats how that fight looked . After Eye finally ( wasnt hard/long fight really ) died i healed myslef to full , used few hi-ehter to maks mp . Same tactic with dragon . when i was low on hp or mp i casted sleep on him . after i regained some hp and mp it started again . FIN
Fight took me 12mins . Its really fun to solo this , gl with it .

um, this is a horrible guide because it never states that if you do Sandy 1st you don't need to do anything except talk to Bastok NPC's before enering Waughroon Shrine and fighting the Dragon.

I guarantee you dozens of people are not only going out there to kill Vatgit, but also mining Mythril Sand and trying to find out what to do with it when in fact they don't even need to do any of it if they've killed Vatgit 1st...

awesome job allakaz...

I just finished this quest and got my rank 3: and I have to say the dragon is easier than the bastok part... The dragon really went down like nothing (just like the eye) and we were 1 WHM (me) and 2 WAR... Anyway, when you shout for party to kill the dragon : you've GOT TO make sure everyone you invite will be at least rank 3, and if it is rank 2 ask them if they did the first part of the mission: i had to boot about 3 people from my party that weren't even rank 2...
Dead?
# Feb 22 2006 at 7:31 AM Rating: Decent
Okay after much anticipation I did this quest with 5 people total. My lvl 22 blm/lvl 12 whm acted as the healer with my only dark magic being sleep on the dragon. Let me tell you that the eye went down like nothing and the dragon wasn't too hard either. However, I died after he hit me for 195 pts (I was hurt already). If you die- STAY- DON'T BLOOD WARP OUT! I stayed to see if my group would win, they did and I still completed the mission. You still get the key item if you die!!!
So easy
# Feb 06 2006 at 7:46 PM Rating: Decent
This is an easy mission for me it was. Went to Bastok first, got the necessary item from AH then traded it to the refiner. Of course had help from a passer-by, but still relatively easy. When I got to windy the only hard part was 1st finding a few people to help me with this quest. I was a pld at the time I did this around lvl 26, so not much of a lvl decrease when I fought the dragon. Now best advice have a person with sleep BLM or RDM sleep the dragon, preferably both cast it on the dragon, but only if one of the other's fails. Next have your tank and DD go after the other mob, forget what it was. Hecteyes I think. Anywho, he will be easy pickings while dragon is asleep. Then smack the dragon for the win. If you were stupid like this n00b was in my pt he attacked the dragon when it was asleep...stupid stupid mistake...we still won though thanks to mages nuking the hell out of the hecteyes (gonna say it was that due to the face I don't remember.) Then I ran over to hold Dragon's attention while mages and DD whailed on it.

RE: HELP!!
# Jan 26 2006 at 5:00 AM Rating: Decent
Put the gravel in the rifing machine on the third floor.

1 - target it to open it
2 - Trade the Mithral gravel
3 - when something comes out of bottom, drop to bottom and open it up for your sands.

....Now kick yourself ><

(PS it says it above)

This mission can really get messed up if youre not careful.
Me and my son were thinking of doing it together when it was time and we even had an idea about trying it just the two of us once we got our levels up. BLM and maybe MNK. Somehow he started it in Sandy so I went after and did that part too. Then I was in Bastok and it seemed like no one else was ever going to do it. I was BLM level 16 by the time I found a group and my son was not online and it was a whole 6-ppl-party so I thought: Oh, wth and went along. I asked if it wasn't better for me to change into WAR (lvl 20) but the others didn't think it was necessary.
When I got to the third floor in Palborough Mines the WHM we had cast sneak on everyone but herself and of course aggroed the turtlethingies. Gentleman as I was I tried to help during the fight even if we had fighters that could take them more easy and lost my sneak. After she cast sneak again on herself but forgot me and soon enough I had a train of turtles after me. I got killed and no one around to raise so it was back to Bastok emptyhanded.
A few days later another party was setting up and this time my son was online so I send him a tell to get over (he was in Sandy). Then he tells me that he may not have finished the Sandy-part of the mission so I try to give him instructions. He had already killed Vathghit so it was just to talk to different people and start the Bastok-part. We ended up being a WAR, a THF, a DRG and a BLM so it seemed quite good. We went in and came up to the third floor when all of a sudden our BLM left us (her children were tearing her place apart or something while mom was playing).
We decided to go in anyway just to see what it was like and we got a guy that showed us the way and taking on all the quadavs (he died just inside Waughroon Shrine)(and the first time I didn't really check the map so I was unsure about the way).
Well, we stepped into the circle and what happens? It's only me that enters! Hey, just watch the video guys, I told the others. But they couldn't enter. Oh, great, I thought, now I'm surely dead, but thank godness there was a choice to go back or stay once you were inside.
So somehow my son had missed something and had to redo everything. I think he may have talked to Halver again. He ended up doing the Sandy dragon (dread one) instead a week later with some of his LS-friends. So it seems like you can change if you didn't finish all the steps properly. The DRG that was with us didn't even have this mission started.
I ended up doing it with a whole party. I want that Windy-ring that I should have gotten if I had read the manual before playing (being a hume from Windy). And then I want the other rings too, eventually, (just for fun) so I will be doing more of these dragons again one day. But I guess I have to be patient. Windy who has been first in conquest on my server (Fairy) for months have now been third for at least three weeks...

If you did the Sandy-part and finished that you can't do the mithril-sand-part. Then you're doing the dark dragon part now.
This is 2 parts and you can only do the mithril-sand OR warchief watgrit; depending on what city you do first. And second you can only do the dread dragon OR the dark dragon.
You can mess them up if you haven't finished one part properly and start again in the second city. (See my earlier post on this page).
If you have talked to the guy (Grohm?) in the eatery in Metalworks go and see what they say in the windhurstian embassy. If they are all excited about you going to fight then youre in the middle of the dragon-part.
Terrible Guide
# Nov 02 2005 at 2:35 PM Rating: Decent
This strat is ONLY if you go to Bastok first.

If you are FROM Bastok, you get no help.
If you are FROM Sandy, you get no help.
If you go to Sandy before Bastok (WAY easier) you get no help.

This is the worst guide I have ever read.. soo.

If you go to Sandy first, you get SUCH an easy task, go to Ghelsba Outpost, and kill Vatgit. I did this solo, level 23.. fight lasted <15 seconds.. then you head to bastok for the BCNM..

Talk to your consulate, then to Pius, who sends you to another guy, it's all pretty simple cut and dry explanations..

Go into Palborough Mines, (I wish I had a map for you) the guide above has the correct FIRST level.. follow that to reach level 2. Once at level 2 head north/east and follow the paths so you can reach the Waterway from the EAST (you head west to it..) then you head south for level 3. Level 3 is a PITA due to closed gates and rubble.. hug the westernmost side of the cavern, and you should be okay.. then you head south.. then east.. it's pretty cut and dry., as the next area is a long tunnel with no forks. Head up what seem to be built in stairs, and voila.. zone, Burning Circle.

I went in there, lev 24, RdM solo.. ...and died in under 20 seconds due to 60dmg per hit from dragon.. Now 25, going to sleep dragon and holy hell nuke the eye then focus on dragon again.. ...this should be fun!

Yeah my "guide' is not perf.. but it's better than nothing.
RE: Terrible Guide
# Dec 20 2005 at 8:02 AM Rating: Default
You're right this guide dosen't help people from Bastok or San D'Oria.
This guide is listed under Windurst missions, so it's only for Windurst people who'd be going to Bastok and Sandy. If you need to Bastok info, go to the Bastok mission page.
Oh, and this guide is actually pretty good. :)
be very careful

hi just started this the otherday as a RDM lvl 20. For all of you (like me) who think you can do the first part (mithril mining) solo, think again!! the place to dig is on the "right" side of the square I-9, and you have to go through a lot of linking mob to get there. Even if they are classed as "easy pray" they hit hard (10 to 35 hp a hit). Have tried to solo it 4 times and was KO each time!!! Special thanks to those who raised me :)
Hope this helps.
Very fun little battle

This was my 1st BCNM battle, was very enjoyable. Set new record on Carbuncle server with 4 people doing it. 3min 28 seconds, 18 seconds off previous time.

25MNK/12WAR Mareg
25DRG/12WHM Kaggie
25SAM/11WAR Shippoumaki
22BLM/11WHM Pandor

So was rather chuffed with the whole fight ^^

PS. wanna do it again ^^

Don't remember what it was exactly (4'23", I think?), but my team and I pulled it off. That dragon knocked a good chunk of my health (and the WAR with me; the BLM knew to stay out of the way), but I finished him with the last blow of my 2-hour. The eye was a cinch.
Why can't I go in?

I talked to the consulate in sandoria. I talked to the guy in the back and the cutscene with lion. I went in and talked with the guy directly in front telling me to go kill the dragon. Why couldn't I enter the battle?

Well, this mission sucks, period. It's long, it's boring, and in the end you have to fight an NM dragon. You see setups here of 3 to 6 people and some solo attempts with alot of money spent. Here was my setup, just tonight:

25WAR/THF waring Lizard gear
24BLK/WHM

WAR (me) used Mithkabob. BLK used Melon Pie. 9 minutes later, BLK is dead (he's Rank5 anyway) and I come out, 21 HP left, and kill the dragon. Both our 2Hrs used. All I have to say is one word, Dread Dragon:

"Duo'd!"

I beat this mission solo the other night with my Elvaan BLM/RDM using mostly sub-par equipment that I bought in Bastok before heading to the BCNM. Not for the faint of heart.

Some tips for others going this route:

MP *WILL* be your foe. Get plenty of MP regen drinks, I used up four Yaguado drinks when I beat this mission. I also used a Melon pie. Tarutaru will have an advantage in this area, though, so use your best judgement.

HP may be your foe. I used a no-nonsense strategy that put me in the thick of things at the start, though I know I could have accomplished it easier if I fought a bit more tactically. That being said, I used up 6 hi-potions, most all near the start.

Prebuff. This BCNM is odd in that any high level buffs will stay on you when you enter the BCNM. My BLM is level 60, so my subjob gave me access to Protect2, Shell, Shock Spikes, Regen, etc, which I all cast before I entered. Also, since you will be fighting this solo, you don't want to waste your time to try to buff up after you've entered the BCNM.

Stoneaga, Waterga, Aeroga. Don't bother with these spells, in my opinion. They hit the Seeker pretty decent (75+), but did very minimal damage against the dragon (5-7) even with Elemental Seal. Taking into account that my Thunder spell did more damage (85-90) for less MP, it is a waste to use -ga.

Drain and Sleep work great on the Dragon, despite what you might assume because of his name (I figured the 'Dark Dragon' would have pretty good resistance to dark spells). He was only able to resist my sleep once.

My fight:

At the start, I ran in and cast what I thought was going to be my most damaging spell (Aeroga) only to watch it hit the Dragon for 7. After, I cast Elemental Seal Sleep on the Dragon right away (I used the timer on this ability throughout the fight to give myself an idea of how much time I had left for the BCNM as well).

I started nuking the Seeker with Thunder, Blizzard, and Fire. I didn't try out the other three elemental spells at all. At this point, though, my original strategy sort of fell apart because I intended to cast Bind on the Seeker and just keep nuking him from afar, but that dang Dragon cheats. He drew me in while he was asleep (something that kept happening throughout).

This put me in melee range of the Seeker, and rather than try to let my Yaguado drinks keep up with my mp while I got pounded, I hit manafont so I could keep nuking the Seeker while I hit my hi-potion macro as needed. This did the trick and the Seeker died reasonably fast. This will be the turning point for your battle, you really just need to kill the Seeker as fast as possible because the Dragon just becomes an endurance MP struggle.

The Dragon moves around as if he has a perma-gravity spell on him, so he is real easy to run away from. His draw-in is pretty pathetic because it really only gives him one chance to hit you before you can run out of range again and he doesn't use it often enough for his own benefit. And while he has a lot more HP than the Seeker, he is easily slept. Generally, what I did was just run away, nuke as I could, sleep him when my MP got low, and then rest. He always drew me in while I was resting and he was sleeping, but it will not interrupt your HP/MP regen. Also, when you get the message that he wakes up, you usually have enough time to run away from him again before he even hits you.

My win time was at about 11 minutes doing this fight solo.

Good luck. :)

before trading Mithril sand to Patt-pott you've got to talk to Grohm the galka in the Craftmen's Eatery, who gives you 3 pickaxes (so you don't need to buy them)
