Mission Orders

On the command of Zubaba, the head lady-in-waiting, you are to journey beneath the central magic tower of the Horutoto Ruins. There, you are to report to the facility managed by Heavens Tower, which protects the talisman that seals Castle Zvahl. Render whatever assistance is necessary.

Walkthrough

After talking to the gate guard head to the Heaven's Tower again to meet the Star Sybil's handmaiden Zubaba. She explains that she wants you to travel to the tower in East Sarubaruta and open a the 3 Mage Gate. You can do the "Making the Grade" quest from Fuepepe (Aurastery, Windurst Waters) for the ASPIR scroll at the same time (well WORTH it). Your party MUST consist of at least one of EACH of the following: Black Mage, White Mage and Red Mage.

Go to the north-eastern Horutoto tower and hug the wall to your right to find the Cracked Wall (G-8). Go inside and go through the east door in D-10. Head down to the strange looking gate at H-9. There are 3 colours on the floor: White, Red and Black. Each mage must stand in the middle of each circle and the door will open. Once the door is opened, keep going past through the fake walls at H-8.

Wendigos there drop the test answers for "Making the Grade" quest. Go into the "Gate of Light" for a cutscene with the highest ranked cardians.

You might also have to bring three Rusty Daggers dropped from Wendigos.

Head back to Heaven's Tower to finish the mission.

Getting the portal charm

Ok, as one of the people who have the portal charm, I though I would clarify how to get it for all those interested in access to the wendigo room and the toraimarai canal.

Step 1) getting the mission. To get the portal charm you must complete the "Writen in the Stars" mission. This is a windurst only mission which would seem to preclude any non windurstian from getting the charm. (I haven't tested this with a non-windurstian mission 3-2 to see whether a bastokian or a san d'orian would be able to get the sub quest as well. Could someone confirm or deny this?)

Step 2) getting the subquest. There are 2 ways to get the subquest, both work. Way 1) trade a normal rolandberry to kupipi (one of the npc's next to the world pass npc in windurst wall's star tower) after starting the mission but before completing it. Way 2) trade a normal rolandberry to kupipi AFTER finishing the mission (see step 4).

Step 3) do the mission. Unlike the mission description above there are 2 ways to get thru the sealed portal. Way 1) get 3 mages in your party, one each of RDM, BLM, WHM. Have them stand in the center of the apropriately colored circles in front of the portal. This will get the door open. Way 2) find someone that has already got the portal charm and simply have them open the door. Finding 1 person might be easier than finding 3 different mages of the correct level (high enough not to get killed on the way) so way 2 is the way to go. Also it doesn't matter if the method of doing this quest is the check the light seal or get 3 rusted daggers, so long as it gets done.

step 4) Talk to kupipi again. She should give you the portal charm at this point. Note that if you didn't give her the rolandberry in step 2, do so now, and she will imediatly give you the portal charm.

What you get for your troubles:

forever after (since a portal charm is a key item) you no longer need any help getting bye the portal and can:

1) kill wendigoes for rusty daggers, test answers and bone chips, (the wendigoes with scythes also drop scrolls of gravity)
2) kill battle bats for bat wings, bat fangs (I assume - not sure I've ever goten one) and horotoro chest keys (so far I've gotten 2 moth axes, 2 lapis lazuly, a heat rod and gil) note that you passed 3 chest spawn points along the way. the best tactic is to check the spots on your way (realy not that far out of the way) and if you spot the chest, kill bats and beetles till a key drops. before going on to get your test answers or what ever. If the chest aren't there, they are probably in the 2nd tower, so don't waste the inv slot getting the key.
3) wander on into the toraimarai canal (and probably get killed unless you are 50+ or in a party)

Few more clarifications:

- You can give the Rolanberry to Kupipi even before starting the mission. I think you're first able to give it to her after doing 2-3 (you can find out, from another NPC, that she's grumpy upon your return because you didn't bring her a Rolanberry).

- The point is to have completed 3-2, and to have given Kupipi the Rolanberry. Once you do both these things in whichever order you please, chat with her and you'll get the Portal Charm.

- If you do the "original" 3-2, you actually do have to get into the room. If you do the "repeatable" 3-2 (which will be the only version you get to do, if you wait until after completing 4-1 to do it), you can just buy the rusty knives at the AH and never have to get into the room. So you don't have to find anyone at all, be it a person with the Portal Charm or a set of three mages.

- You only have to complete the mission once to qualify. Whether it was original or repeatable doesn't matter. I personally did the repeatable one, since I was in a bit of a hurry for rank 5 at the time, and by the time I got that, I'd missed my plot window for doing the original. (Note that if the same happens to you, you *can* still see the original's cutscenes. Finish the repeatable, then check the Heavens Tower bard, and the Inner Horutoto goblin footprint.)

I got this mission by accident just like a few others did. I was lucky and got some mages from my LS to help out. Afterwards, I got that portal charm and went back just to look around. Wendigos were the only thing that aggroed me at mnk35.

If ...
1. you're on Ramuh
2. got stuck with this mission
3. and at least lvl35 (to avoid aggro getting to the room) or have sneak, invis, whatever-stops-undead-aggro,

... then you may /tell me and we can work something out.

Note: "Work something out" does not mean payment (as in gil). I'll help you for free (as in beer).

And no, I don't know what stops undead aggro - I'm a monk: Sharp as a Marble.

Woohoo! Just rejoicing that the helping mages don't have to be on the mission! I've been stuck on this mission for about a month because I thought they did and was trying to find a black and red mage who weren't on a mission yet. Thank you thank you thank you for having that comment there!

Euriko properly described this mission.

Quote:

To complete the mission... you have to go into the "Gate of Light" for a cutscene with the highest ranked cardians, then repor to Heaven's Tower.

The room is the north-western chamber behind the Mage Door behind the walk-through wall.

For some reason Allakhazam (and other sites) list to examine all the magical gizmos!? Well after 30mins or so of unpleasant searching, the guy I was helping clicked the door and we finished it. Thank yiou for posting the right way, I should have read the comments.

OK, I was one of the 3 mages helping someone else do this quest. I was too low to get the quest myself. Now that I've been through the door can I skip the mission itself? Do I have to go back in for the mission? Do I have to go back in for the Portal Charm?

There are two versions of this mission. The original (where you have to actually get in there and check a door for a cutscene) and the repeatable (where you give three rusty knives to Zubaba, which you can easily pick up at the AH ... or you can go in there and get them as drops).

If you skip the mission and do it after mission 10 (the magicite one), then you'll only get the repeatable. Although once you've completed the mission (original or repeatable), you can watch the cutscenes from the original with the bard in Heavens Tower and the goblin footprints in Inner Horutoto.

There is also one notable benefit to doing this mission - it allows you to get a key item called a "Portal Charm". Once you've a. finished this mission and b. traded a Rolanberry to Kupipi (in either order), you can talk to Kupipi and get this key item. This will let you open the door by yourself.

So for those of you doing this mission (the original version where you actually have to get in there), you do have an alternative to finding a RDM, WHM, and BLM ... you can find someone who's already done the mission. Much easier to get into the room that way.

This is also an entrance to Toraimarai Canal (where a few quests and missions require you to go), so it helps to have the ability to get in there without bringing the three mages along.

Point being, do this mission, even if only for the Portal Charm. If you want to make life easier on yourself (but miss out on actually experiencing the plot except by replaying it), do it after mission 10, and you can complete the mission without ever leaving Windurst.

i Soooo mad at my self... i finally finished this mission, it took me about 2 1/2 Months to do it.. well when i finished it.. i was so happy to start the next mission, that i acedently chose this mission again,, finding out that my rank bar had to be 99% full (which wasnt at the time).. but when i went to talk to Zubba(spelling?) she didnt give me the key item again,,, she said something alon the lines that the central tower is sacred to windurst and that it has been over run by vermin,, and that it is my job to rid the virmen of the tower.. so im wondering, do i have to find another WHM, and BLM,, to finish it the second time?? well just to do this im going to try to kill everything in sight,, for about an hour, to try to finish it ... ill up date this post when i finish the mission...

ok so this is the update on this mission... well i decided to kill everything for about 2 hours last night.. espcially in the goblin room,, gaining about 5k in gill, and another 5k in drops.. well i was about to leave when a group of high lvl's (70+) opend the seald portal.. and i went through it thinking that i might be able to get a Gravity spell to drop from a wendigo.. well after geting a stack of bonechips and 3 rusty daggers and som tes answers my inventory was full.. i went to the tranpert disk and it transported me to the three mage seald portal agian.. well i went to talk to Zubba(spelling?)and she said right of the bat " go to the central tower and rid us of the virmin there.. ect.. and bring back 3 rusty daggers as proof!" wow lucky me i just got 3 r.daggers from wendigos. (and i was going to sell them at the AH for 800 gill a peice) i traded the r.daggers and i finished the mission yet again.. i found that it was quit fun the second time around..even though you still need the 3 mages to break the seal to open the door.. try it!! maybe later on i might repeat the mission again... it was actually fun..

whatever you do, becareful when you select your new missions... i skipped this one for a good reason, and now I have to do it. (was playing one night very tired, and accepted the wrong mission by accident)

wish there was a option to solo it if you're lvl 45 +
try to skip it
# Apr 03 2004 at 5:29 PM Rating: Decent
this mission is skippable, and i highly recommend that you do skip it...

getting a whm, rdm, blm is pretty annoying, and once you are down there, everything aggros, so either you have to be high level to avoid aggro, or bring another buddy along to help fight the way through

also, its very difficult to get out ... unless the blm has escape

some people say try going through some Tormamani (sp?) Canal to getback to windy walls is the right thing to do .... listen to me, THAT PLACE IS A LIVING HELL!! everything in there is level 50+ and aggresive

i tried going through afterwards on my 29 whm, and i see an IT bat, and i put on sneak and invis .... i might have made it through this whole place, but i ran out of my mp from having to fight with my pt to get through to the door, so i eventually had none left to cast sneak and invis

i am forced to rest near a pugil, when i ran out of mp, but my sneak seems to want to disappear as i do ... and low and behold, it does .... immediately the pugil attacks me, and hits me for 286 DAMAGE, and then again for 265 .... much past enough to fry my taru hide

so i don't suggest TRYING to do this mission unless you have a blm with warp II or escape

just skip it and go to mission 3-3, but that one is just as nasty as this one is .... but its not skippable :P

I regret skipping this mission. At the time it seemed like a good idea, but now I am of the level where I'd like to xp in Toraimarai Canal and I'm trying to figure out how to get a Portal Charm. The mission is no longer offered to me as a repeatable at Rank 5.

I've been told there is another way into Toraimarai that involves killing a level 60 undead NM, so I'll figure it out eventually. But if you are trying to decide whether or not to skip this mission, consider the future. Especially if you may play BLM - the BLM AF3 fight is there.

There's another way out. The path to Toraimarai Canal is the left tunnel on the north wall. If you go in the right tunnel, you'll find a teleporter that will take you past the 3 mage gate again, so you can leave easily.

These are the EXACT (read, verbatum) mission instructions given on almost all of the English FFXI resources for Windurst mission 3-2, and I'm not necessarily saying there's anything wrong with that.

I'm not sure who copied and pasted what, but I do know that there is some wrong information that keeps getting copied over and over as a result. Here is some of the information that I noticed was wrong, and the corrections I've made to them:

1) "She explains that she wants you to travel to the tower in West Sarubaruta and open a the 3 Mage Gate."

- You are going to EAST Sarutabaruta, not
West.

2) "Go to the north-eastern Horutoto tower..."

- This is technically accurate, as the tower
that you are seeking is the furthest
"Northeast" on the map...but as there is
a tower further North, it would probably
be far easier to understand if described
as the "middle" tower.

3) "Examine all the Magical Gizmos then head to H-6 to exit out..."

- The room (the one past the fake walls, with
the wendigos) has NO magical gizmos. You
are in fact trying to find the correct
elemental DOOR to trigger the cutscene.
If this is your first time on the mission,
Zubaba will have given you a charm to open
one of the doors. I, for an example,
received a "Light charm," so I had to find
the "Door of Light" in the Wendigo room
to trigger the cutscene. Likewise, I
can only assume that if you are given
a "Thunder Charm" that one must open
the "Door of Thunder," and so on.

Simply go through all the little hallways
in the Wendigo room, examining all the doors
until you find the correct one. Once you
select the correct door, your charm will be
used up, and the cutscene will trigger.

Also, here are some other things that, while not presented inaccurately, will make this mission easier to understand:

1) This mission is indeed repeatable, but it is probably easier to just buy a stack of Earth Crystals to donate to the W.W. guard than repeat it.

If you do decide to repeat it for some reason, then your task is different. You must kill enough Wendigos in the hidden room to collect three rusty daggers, which you must then turn in to Zubaba. You may also purchase the rusty daggers from the Auction House, if any are available. At any rate, don't do what I did, and wander around wondering why I wasn't given another charm to open one of the doors.

2) You can give a rolanberry to Kupipi, outside of the door leading up to the Star Sybil's chambers, before or after the mission. If you do it right before, and talk to her after the mission is completed, she will give you a key to open the "three mage door" heretofor whenever you want. Likewise, if you simply wait until after the mission, she will give you the key on the spot. The catch is, while the key is ALWAYS possible to get, she won't give it to you until you open the door at least once without it (NOTE: this only applies to you...if someone else opens the door for you with THEIR key, this still counts, and you will still get your own key afterwards).

3) It doesn't matter how you open the door the first time. In point of fact, it might actually be easier for you to find someone who has this special "key" than to actually collect all three mages.

Speaking for myself, rather than finding a white mage and a red mage to come along with me, I simply invited another black mage in my linkshell who had done the mission already, and had gotten the key. Once he opened the door, it opened for both of us, and I went through to complete the mission.

I still got the key speaking to Kupipi afterwards, and the mission went off without a hitch. If it's easier for you to find someone who has the key than to find the mages, then by all means...do it that way.

4) Many people seem to have trouble understanding where to go after they get manage to pass the "three mage door," in what they describe as a "two-pronged fork" room. This room has false walls at the end of either "prong," and one must simply walk through the walls to get into the hidden "Wendigo room." Both prongs link to the same room, so don't worry about that. Once in there, I hope you're high enough in level so that the Wendigos no longer aggro...perhaps around level 38 or 39? I think you'll definitely be safe at 40.

If not, try to carefully pick them off one by one (no easy task, as they are very crowded) and work your way down each little hallway to examine all the doors until you find the correct one for the cutscene. Once you get the cutscene, simply escape, warp, take the shortcut in the room, or walk back through the false walls (whatever works for you) and speak to Zubaba in Heaven's Tower again to end the mission.

That's about all I can think of to make the mission easier on everyone. I hope this helps. Good luck to you all. ^_^

Technically, the 3-mage gate IS in fact in WEST saru, you just can't get there directly. Have you noticed the North exit when you get to the mage gate? It takes you outside to West saru at the tower just outside of Windurst Waters. (you drop down a ledge, which is why you can't get there from West saru). But essentially, yes, you're right about going through East saru.

Thanks for the clarity guys.

Some folks from my link had a similar problem last night. Got all the way in to "the end" and one person was able to get the cutscene; one couldn't. Both had key items, talked to all parties, etc. Unfortuntately, being from Bastok, I didn't have any useful suggestions for them. :/

At least I was able to teleport 3 of us out to the Mea crag. The fourth was low level and just along to help us make up the numbers - didn't have a crag crystal. He had to take the "quick" route back... :/

I'm going to try the tip about giving Rolanberries to Kuipipi posted on here earlier and see how that turns out...

Just thought our experience might be of interest to some planning this mission...

special key also
# Feb 12 2004 at 1:54 PM Rating: Good
Also, I don't see this mentioned here: If you want a special key that will unlock that door that normally would require a rdm/blm/whm, before you talk to Zubaba (I think it's before, it might be after), give a Rolanberry to Kuipipi in Heaven's Tower on the first floor. Then after you've gone to Horutoto ruins and opened the light door, come back and talk to Kuipipi again (Again, it might be after you talk to Zupapa, but just try to do it before talking to Zupapa).

When you do this, Kuipipi will give you a special key that you can use to open that door from now on incase you ever have to go back, or need to help someone that has to do this mission and they won't need a blm/rdm/whm.

From what I understand, you can't get this key after you've finished the mission, so be careful and do the correct steps at the right time.

I got this key after I finished the mission (and the rank 4 mission too for that matter), the tarutaru at the door upstairs still mentioned the rolanberries for Kuipipi and when I gave her one I got the special key. I don't think it showed up as a quest though, much like Kazham Pass I believe.

Wish I had known about this key before, would've saved me alot of time getting the required classes together (wasted an evening on it, then managed it the next day). Good info.

This mission is repeatable and if you for some reason want to do it again (or if you accept the wrong mission by accident... which can happen easily... hrm...) just accept it from one of the guards as usual. Talk to Zubaba again, she wants you to go back to the ruins and bring 3 rusty daggers as proof. These can however be bought at the auction house for around 1,000 gil (at least on Odin server).

I started the mission again out of curiosity, went to the ruins and killed just about every mob type there. Yet, I didn't see any rusty daggers. What are these supposed to drop off if you want to finish the repeat mission the way you're supposed to, what vermin is she referring to exactly ??? I may be forced to get em from AH otherwise.

Edit: just found out what these daggers drop off, and my hunch was correct: allakhazam comments on the WAR version of Wendigos confirm that they drop rusty daggers. I'll be back huntin' there tomorrow, didn't get any off the ones I killed today. ;)
