Mission Orders

On the Star Sibyl's command, you are to head north to the ruins of Fei'Yin, somewhere on the Beaucedine Glacier. There, you are to confirm whether the final seal is doing its job.

Walkthrough

Speak to a gate guard to begin this mission. You are needed at Heavens Tower. Head upstairs to the Star Sibyl's Chambers for a cutscene. You will receive the key item: New Fei'Yin Seal. If you cannot receive the seal, make sure your rank points are full and try zoning out of the tower then go back to the chamber again. This quest cannot be completed without the seal!

When ready, head to Fei'Yin either by going through Ranguemont Pass, or by getting a Teleport-Vazhl if everyone in your party has the crystal. It is recommended you have a map or a printed map as Beaucedine Glacier can be a very confusing maze to navigate.

When you zone into Fei'Yin, you will get a cutscene. After the cutscene, head to (K-8), where you will find two dolls and a Cermet Gate on the east wall. Head to the gate to find Qu'bia Arena. Some mobs aggro to magic and many others aggro to sound, so it's recommended every party member bring their own Sneak Oil.

You have 15 minutes to defeat Archlich Taber'quoan and his minions, the Ancient Sorcerers and Ancient Warriors. Everyone must be on this mission or higher or they will not be able to enter the battlefield. Once you defeat the Archlich, the battle will end and you will receive a cutscene and a key item: Burnt Seal.

Return to the Star Sibyl to finish this mission.

Update Notes

As of February 14th, 2011, there is no longer a level cap restriction on the mission battlefield.

Battle Notes

Buffs cast outside the battle will wear off upon entering, so do it inside. The Ancient Warriors keep spawning, so focus on the Archlich. You only need to defeat him to win. The minions are easily slept.

first off, for Bastokans, you talk to either Naji, Iron Eater or the President to get this mission. Since they're all next to each other, that shouldnt be a problem to find out who.

did this today finally
had an odd pt setup
war(me), war, nin, thf, blm, and pld
our plan was to go staright after Archlich
we thought with food and drinks and everyone using their 2hours, we should beat it, we were wrong
everyone died

tried it a 2nd time but this time a mnk instead of the pld
beat it this time around but one war died and i was down to 7 hp when it was over

we did set a new Sylph record with 3:27 (one minute was spent resting in the beginning though)
undoubtedly that will get beat as well though

you only need SNEAK to run by EVERYTHING in this tower.

Not true, all of the golems in here aggro sight. So, if you encounter them, you'll need invis also.
so easy

I did this mission today with my LS, was so easy.

Party was MNK/WAR (me), THF/NIN, PLD/WAR, BLM/WHM, RDM/BLM, WHM/BLM. I ran in first, targeted the Archlich, hit Berserk and Focus, and popped Hundred Fists. I was doing over 100 dmg per first and I only had to pop Raging Fists twice for 850 dmg each time and it was dead. Finished in just over 2 minutes, no one even got down to yellow, not even with me tanking the Archlich because of all the hate I was getting.

Last night, as I was lfg with my 54 bard, I get an invite to do mission 5.1 with some friends.

I accept and about half-way there, I decide that I'll film the fight and post it here as a 'this is what it's like' informational video for those who have yet to do it.

If you want complete details, here's a link to the official mission page on this site (very handy ^^).

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/quests.html?realm=&fquest=152

Here's the readers-digest version.

Mission 5.1 is a bcnm type fight with skeletons (read: undead). One archlich and several minions in Fey'Yin. To win, you must simply defeat the Archlich. That's all.

Our party was Sam, Mnk, Mnk, Brd (me), Rdm and Whm.

First off, I know that 2 mnks on this mission makes it almost impossible to lose. That being said, I'm not here to brag about how fast we did it or how easy it was, but more along the lines of point out things I noticed. By all means, we were not expecting it to end so quickly and we approached the fight as if it would be a fight for our lives.

Here's what I noticed as a bard:

  • When the battle starts, there's two minions and the archmage immediately in the room

  • A new minion 'spawns' roughly about every 15 seconds

  • Doing the math, if you don't defeat any minions, that'll put 7 mobs on you after the first minute (3 to begin, one every 15 seconds)

  • Minion aggro is weird, they tend to go after whomever is doing the most damage to the Archlich when they spawn. Use this to your advantage

  • According to others, blm sleepaga - even with Elemental Seal - DOES NOT WORK. The only way of sleeping the minions is with a bard (as seen in the video)

  • As a taru bard eating boiled crab, the minions were only hitting me for ~20 each time. Not a huge threat, but if there were over 10 of them it would be.

  • Speed is your best interest here. The faster you kill the Archlich, the less minions you have to worry about. There approaches a point where even a bard will be sweating from the adds, so take with you as much firepower as you can get.

  • Take the video and use it as a guide for those doing the mission in the future. It seems it's a fair split on those who successful do this and those who fail.

I hope this video allows for those who have failed to accomplish this mission to get it done soon!

The video is from a bards perspective and as such, doesn't have a direct view of the fight. However I left damage filters on so you can see how much damage is taken place by looking in my chat log.

Please, Please PLEASE feel free to redistribute this video as you see fit. My static IP connection is on a DSL with a horrible upload. If it's too slow for you now, wait a bit.

    Happy viewing!

After you get Rank 5, you get the Key Item, message to Jeuno. Go back to Bastok and talk to Naji in the Metalworks. You will get a cutscene and the mission. The min lvl posted here is the recommended min for the fight not the mission. I received the mission at lvl 38.
    RE: can't activate
    # Aug 20 2004 at 11:08 AM Rating: Decent
In order to activate, you must head back to the Chateau and talk to Monarlais Halver. When he tells you to make preparations, but does not give the mission, go and talk to the normal mission NPCs at the gates in San d'Oria. If the mission "The Ruins of Fei'Yin" does not appear, turn in crystals until it does. Once you accept this mission, you will be directed to go back and talk to Halver for more information.

Although this page states the minimum level required is 45, I was able to receive this mission at 40.

    Hope this helps.

Did this one last night with some folks:

    MNK/SAM (me)
    WHM/BLM
    PAL/WAR
    WAR/(forget sub)
    MNK/WAR
    DRK/THF

All you have to do is go in and kill the main boss. That simple. Don't even deal with the other skeletons. Having two Monks is practically a must have (monks are the best at killing Undead). Took us approximately 40 seconds to get it down with only one death (the WHM).
    Not too bad
    # Aug 15 2004 at 12:45 AM Rating: Decent
With a party of level 50s or so, the fight wasn't too hard, but one of us nearly died with the AOE attacks.

    Taru Whm/Blm 50
    Elv Drg/War 46
    Elv Drk/War 49
    Hum Pld/War 50 (me)
    Elv Drk/Nin 50
    Elv Blm/??? 50

The boss starts with only two minions in the room, Ancient Skeletons or something. Those are the ones that can give you trouble. The boss itself doesn't do much damage with its normal attacks.

What can hurt you are the swarms of Skeleton Warriors that come out. If you let them bunch up on you, you can quickly be taken down. But they are quite weak. The PLD can kill them easily in one or two attacks, so any decent Damage dealer can kill them quickly. In our case, the DRG took that job.

The boss was only hitting 40-60 dmg on the Drk that had the hate, so you can believe he doesn't hit very hard on a Pld if it can tank properly, which isn't that easy with all the skeletons around either.

I suggest that you pull the Archlich away from the entrance so that the one taking care of the warriors comming out has enough time and space to take care of them without disturbing the group. He should hang near the door since he's not needed with the Archlich.

Even better if the door guardian has some Cure handy while he waits for the next warrior to appear, since the archlich's main trouble is the AOE, and not the normal attacks or even its defense, that isn't all that good. It got some good ammount of HP to compensate.

End result, it took 6 minutes, most of our MP, but everyone was in the Yellow HP or better.
    MNK is the key.

Just so you can see JUST how much a MNK decimates this mission:

A party with 5 MNK's and WHM could finish this mission in... probably under 20 seconds. All LVL 50 or above when we did it. I was the bard, and didnt even get a chance to get into a sleep cycle, it was over too fast. I was just sleeping what I could when I could, as the monsters spawn 1 at a time (so are never properly grouped for horde)

2:11 baby. Bahamut Record, thanks to Totien, Lesliecheung, Hakai, Sakijima, and...err...the other guy!

Having 2 MNKs in the party made it so easy, it was rediculous. After a few initial spells, I couldn't even get off Freeze it was dead so fast. The RDM tanked the excess skellies (started at two, was at four max). All I have to say is, the more Monks the better!

    Freeze! nooo!!
    # Aug 01 2004 at 11:16 AM Rating: Decent
Last night I set up a party to bash this guy and I was pretty happy with what I had.

    Paladin, Thief/ninja, sam/war, red/white, red/smn, and a Black/white

we went in and i expected us to romp about everything.

Well, the blackmage uses freeze. and well... he dies about 10 seconds later. it all goes downhill after that.

after that the redmages die, followed by the paladin *shortly after his 2 hour wears off*
around that time i pound my perfect dodge and I start flailing, after that I die, and the sam dies after that, what sucks is if the same had one more turn we would of won.

    RE: Freeze! nooo!!
    # Aug 09 2004 at 1:10 PM Rating: Decent
    did it with 1pld, 1thf, 1sam, 1rdm, 1bst, 1blm(me)
and no, I didn't use Freeze!!

we tried three time then we finally won the battle on the third try. and yes, we did died the first two battle.

1st we thought just put the minions to sleep and it should work fine... (elemental seal + sleepga).
Nope, didn't work.... and that's the downside of it... and @ the point where the boss's HP is down to 10% ... the pld died after his 2hr wears off. and after that everything else is just downhill....
so we asked 1 of our ls to come to raise us. (um... got here in less than 15 min from Windurst. I wonder how......)

then the 2nd time we fought him, the downside was... we ran out of MP. I was nuking the whole time and by the time I used my manafone, it was too late...

then 3rd time, we end up killing the minions first. we found that the minioins will regenerate but with lower lv ... like... lv.1? ( cuz our pld killed them with 1 hit).

so... this is what I think every pt should do while they doing this mission:
    1. get a brd to help u (to put minions to sleep and NO, blm's sleepga doesn't work!!!)

or 2. kill the minions first and have 1 person keep killing the minions as they keep regenerate while others focus on the boss.

oh.. and bring a 7 person w/raise just in case...
    easy

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to accept this mission. I have no current missions, I have full rank bar, I've tried talking to Halver, King Destin, the Archduke, the Ambassador, the gate guard, EVERYONE. No one will tell me anything and all Halver will tell me is to hone my level and equipment. This is really making me angry. What do I do?
    RE: Angry

I had the same problem myself for the longest time. I had full rank bar and good equip plus every spell I ca use and he wouldnt give me the quest in San D'Oria. Only trick to getting this is talk to the gate guard that gives you all the other missions. He wont tell you anything special, just to talk to Halver. Afterwards Halver shut hit yap about my spells and equip and BAM mission 5-1
    SERVER RECORD!!

Did this twice yesterday one time with my RDM/BLM character and once with my MNK/WAR

First time through the party setup was

    PLD/WAR
    PLD/WAR
    RDM/BLM (Me)
    BLM/WHM
    WHM/BLM

We came close to dying the first time through since our 6th member the RDM disconnected and never came back. Everyone blew their 2hrs except for 1 paladin. At the end everyone was at RED. Funny thing is I diaga'd about 10 skeletons and they were all whacking on me and when stoneskin woreoff I was still able to recast it while being hit, and without aquaveil up.

2nd time through was a breeze, the RDM still had not come back so we decided to just do it agan with 5 people and the party setup was this:

    PLD/WAR
    PLD/WAR
    MNK/WAR (Me)
    WHM/BLM
    BLM/WHM

This setup we broke the server record. I charged in first with my monk and hit attack on the archlich, soon as the first hits connected i turned on hundred fist and let it run the duration. WHM was curing me as well as the paladins & I was tanking the archlich. When Hundred Fists was done, I Had 300% tp so I berserked and had one of the paladins do Red Lotus Blade & I skill chained into a 834 dmg Raging Fists which ended in a 500 dmg fusion. The archlich died about 20 seconds after that when I ended it with another Raging Fists. The total clear time came out to 2:12 beating the previous best of 2:54. If the party setup was 4 monks 2 whm you could probably beat this mission in 1 min 30 seconds or less, and nobody would beat your time ever.

I've found the easiest way to handle this fight is to run it like BCNM 40. The minions are resistant to sleep spells, but bard lullaby -will- work, albeit a little more erratically than those wimpy BCNM onions we're all used to. The best set-up I've found is PLD, BRD, RDM, WHM (or a second RDM), and 2 misc. damage dealers - monks are the best for this, of course.

Have your bard pop a fishkabob or a boiled crab (you -will- get hit) and round up the minions for lullaby while the group goes after the main boss - aggro in this fight works in a -very- bizarre manner - even after the PLD used Cover and Invincible, the skeletons mostly went after whoever they felt like.

Have your WHM (or RDM) stay with bard to keep them alive - the RDM can handle the main boss (Make sure to silence and -keep- him silenced!) and keeping the PLD alive. Whoever is the bard's dedicated healer, expect to get smacked around, as the sleep cycle can become rather erratic. The first time I went in I used Roast Mushrooms, however, I think fishkabobs would be a better choice for the WHM as well - that Holy Breastplate will really serve you well during this battle. Be sure to Stoneskin/Blink before you go in. If you're doing well, don't be afraid to melee a little and use Earth Crusher to take out a few of those pesky minions.

The rest of the group, just focus on destroying the boss as fast as possible. Keep him silenced at all times and he's a breeze. The longer you keep him alive, the riskier this fight gets for your bard and white mage. They're just holding them off for as long as possible.

    Too easy

This thing was pathetically easy. We went in with 50 pld, whm, blm, blm, rdm (me), drk. One BLM used manafont early on to get some whittling done. I played back line curing people from sleep (which happens often). The skels did start pouring in but I think our dark started picking a couple off. In general though, we just bombed the main guy while I kept it enfeebled. When it was getting low, I was going to chainspell it to death but I got sleeped and the other five killed it anyway. We were never in any danger what so ever. I don't think anyone even went into orange.

You can "sleep" undead, but it is difficult as it is often fully resisted, and partially resisted the rest of the time. Undead are (obviously) resistant to dark magic.
A BLM/RDM's sleep is dark magic (IIRC).
A BRD's Lullaby, however, is light magic. This makes it very easy to lull undead to sleep. I have done this many times on bogys (in valkurm, jugnar, gusgen, etc), ghouls (same areas), wights (gusgen, qufim), banshees (gusgen), you get the idea...

i have casted sleep on a Bogy in dunes and it was successful but you do have a point undead are highly resistant to sleep especially the higher level undead

Our Linkshell took an alliance to Fei'Yin (yes I know only one party of six can battle at a time) to complete the mission. Once we got to the burning circle, we all broke up and formed balanced six person parties. We had four Rdms but no Whms.

    Attempt One (everyone died ;.;)
    Pld/War Drk/War Drk/War
    Blm/Whm Sam/War Rdm/Blm (me)

One of the Dark Knights gathered the Skells, while the rest of us went for the Arch Lich. This worked for awhile, but I began drawing aggro from healing, plus Skells just started coming from every direction. Pld lasted the longest. Got the Arch Lich down to 25%. Sam used 2-hr. Once dead we waited for the BCNM battle timer to kick us out. We all had a good laugh, cuz when we were kicked out dead, six dead bodies zoned standing up then fell in one big dog pile.

Attempt Two (two live, mission complete ^^;)
I don't know their party config. All but two people ended up dying, but everyone was able to complete the mission.

Attempt Three (no one died, V(^.^)V )
    Pld/War Drk/War Drk/War
    Blm/Whm Sam/War Rdm/Blm (me)

We decided to create strategy. I offered one I had read somewhere on these boards where the Rdm tanks the Skull minions.

The Pld used Sneak + Cure-pull on the Arch Lich bringing him back to the burning circle. Some of the minions still followed so there must be different aggro rules for this battle.

    I buffed with:
    Protect III Shell II Phalanx
    Stoneskin Blink Refresh
    Ice Spikes Regen

The Blm was the primary healer. As the Skell minions came, I would diaga spam them and pull them away from the burning circle area. I continually cast Stoneskin and Cure III. I had to use 2-hr because my spells kept getting interupted (Note: Should buff yourself with Aquaveil too).

We won with no deaths. I was down to 87 HP and 19 MP though. I came very close to dying outside the BCNM battle cuz I didn't realize I was Bio-ed right away.

    Attempt 4 (everyone died ;.;)
I don't know their party config. The Rdm had Sum subbed and used Arial Armor on everyone. Our party shared our strategy. Entire party ended up getting wiped out.

Attempt 6 (five died, mission failed, T.T; )
    Pld/War Drk/War Blm/Whm
    Blm/Whm Rdm/Sum Rdm/Blm (me)

Only six members of the alliance were left and we had one person who still needed to compelte the mission. We attempted it without our 2-hrs. We came very close to winning, but 5 party members died. Without 2-hr I was unable to keep myself fully Cured. I was also unable to pull the minions far enough away from the Arch Lich battle. The Rdm/Sum and myself kept ping-ponging the skell minions.

Tried this mission last night, all LV 50s pt makeup was:

    THF/NIN
    THF/NIN
    MNK/WAR
    WAR/NIN
    RDM/WHM
    BLM/WHM

Despite having 2 THF's, we took it down to a SLIVER of health.. until our least THF went down. By the end though, there were at least 10+ minions. They continually ran out at use during the battle, got worse and worse until they finally took out our tank and it went downhill from there. We didn't use any AOE attacks, which seem almost a must if you don't kill the NM FAST, as the minions are very weak. Guess I'll have to try again with more firepower and an AOE plan ><

    48 PLD/WAR
    46 THF/NIN
    47 PLD/WAR
    50 BLM/WHM
    50 WHM/BLM
    47 DRK/THF

Got annihilated. Twice. Hate control was awful, even with Invincible we couldn't keep the little guys attacking the mages. Mages went down fast, and then the melees. Both times we didn't even get 1/4th of his HP down.

Tip: Have an all level 50 party, or you might get crushed. Quick.

The description is wrong. The map of Beaucedine you can't buy in Jeuno. Same for the map of Ranguemont Pass. The map of Beaucedine is the Map of the Northern Regions (Beaucedine and Xarcabard), and you get it in a high fame San d'Oria quest. The Ranguemont Pass map you get in a Selbina quest called "The Rescue". I think you also need high fame for that one.
    Can do it with 5

Did this mission last night with a party of five. Had two drk, whm, blm, and me (48sam), finished in four minutes. So a pld is *not* necessary, but I did 2hr just for the fact that I was going to sleep after the battle.

Tachi:Kagero is the best sam ws to use against the lich, as it does 200-300 pts of dmg with the sam AF1 - if you have the odenta, bump it up.

Just letting everyone know a full pt is not necessary ^_^

    Just a side note:
Tachi:Kagero may be best for a 48 sam to use but at 50 you should have Tachi:Jinpu. Coupled with a sneak attack you should be hitting these for well over 500

I did this just this night. Party consisted of:

    PLD
    SAM
    MNK
    SAM
    RDM
    WHM (me)

We not only dessimated the Main Skeleton, we broke the record on Asura Server. 2 minutes 0 seconds!! The PLD didn't even 2 hour (she used it earlier and we didn't bother waiting). We basically ran in, the MNK did some special stacking thing with a bunch of abilities and opened up with Chi Blast. The PLD then ran up and took the hate, the other Skeletons then promptly went after her. The MNK Broke loose Hundred Fists while both SAMS used their 2 hours. It just went Weapon Skill after Weapon skill from there while me and the RDM spammed Cure 2s. Neither mage got hit once and no one got past orange HP. We only killed one Skeleton and that was the Archlich himself and thats all it took. Hope that helps for you, everyone had the 50 cap with fairly decent Equip, nothing special.
