Summary

Raifa wants you to exterminate an ecological threat, and bring her evidence of the feat.

In-Game Text

Description

Before attempting this quest ensure you have one designated leader that everyone will follow so that the alliance works as one big team. This is essential for the success of this mission. Make sure you have a full alliance!!!

Reifa is located in the Steaming Sheep Restaurant. Talking with Reifa he will tell you of an infestation in the Gusgen mines. His group (V.E.R.M.I.N.) is in charge of clearing out the mines, and he requests your help to clear the mines. Reifa informs you that you should meet up with Degga either at or in (he doesn't say which) the Gusgen mines for more information on the quest.

Go to Gusgen mines and talk to Degga. Degga will apply an oil that level limits you to 20 and makes it so that anyone without the oil cannot cast spells on you (no heals, buffs, etc. unless they have to oil also).

After speaking to Degga and everyone in the alliance has the level cap, proceed north to the first intersection. Take the west corridor (VERY IMPORTANT)!

The west corridor will have mostly ghouls and bandersnatches. Fight these allong the way to ensure you do not train them all the way to the ??? or you will die.

This corridor has only one path to follow, it will veer to the right (to the North). Continure following and clearing the mobs until you reach the most northern part of the passage. You will now be in the large room at the northmost part of the map high up on a platform. If you are not on the platform, you have not taken the correct corridor!! On this platform, go a few steps EAST to locate the ??? (LOCATION G-6 FIRST FLOOR). There will be about 5-6 ghouls and 2-3 bogies. Clear these bogys and search for the ???. The ??? are easy to find because they are located on a CHEST in the middle of the deck. When all the mobs are clear, and everyone is buffed and medded, have the main alliance TANK touch the ??? - DO NOT allow any other player to touch it first as they will instantly get the hate. Once the two NM's are dead, make sure that EVERYONE then touches the ??? to complete the quest. Now you get to fight your way back out!

We started out with 18 ppl.. after many leaving and joining we got 17 we get there quite easily and clear the area and someone touched the ??? without saying anything.. they pop out.. I (and another BLM) cast sleep on one but that doesn't work b/c since guy touched the ??? everyone wasn't attacking the same one... about a second before the first one dies AOE takes me from full life to dead along with 11 of my party members. The remaining killed it off and got their ore. AND LEAVE with only 2 people alive. They kill a ghoul so they can raise the rest of us and a bogy aggros.. everyone dead... Thank goodness the2 that had been alive stayed. with about 10 min left before we were sent to the home point we were all raised and we got our stuff and got out of there... wow what a time... Thanks Crayola and Compmike..

(This is Crayola: Shiva 36WHM/18RDM)

Alliance of 17-18 back and forth, people dropping, coming back etc. I casted Reraise on myself, and headed in for oinment (Reraise stayed despite my being capped at 20). Compmike did alot of the work, he kept his 29WAR on and didn't get capped so he could whack and smack all the goodies on the way to the ???. Got there and I guess someone didn't hear us the first 19 times explaining what exactly we were gonna do, because before we knew it there was a blood bath and lots of disappointments.

Needless to say I died too. I ran out of MP and had no level 20 weapon on me. I stared that Bogy long good and hard before he took me done. I don't even remember the order of what happened next, but I reraised while some other people were trying to knock it down. I sat in the corner and tried to unweaken as fast as I could. I ended up going back to get the ointment reapplied, and went to go touch the ??? (WE HAD WON THE BATTLE!) Speaking of which, if you zone and touch the ??? you're asking for the date of your funeral. Anyways, I got the key item and was looking around at all the black names and figured I need to help. So I ended up dying (no reraise this time) and blood warped to my HP which was in Windhurst. I tele-dem'd and was ready to save the day. Meanwhile Compmike had some friends come and help. High levels of fighters and a raiser. I went back, skipped the ointment since I got my item, and raised a bunch of people. The rest is history for 2 reasons. We had won, and my system had crashed afterwards.

TIP#1) It mentions this alot, but I'll say it again. Get a BLM to cast sleep on one of the jellie and make sure NO ONE is attacking the one that gets sleep casted on it. Kinda destroys the purpose.

Our BLM casted sleep but the majority of people were on both the Jellies and it was just chaos from there on.

TIP#2) Technically speaking you shouldn't need a high level to come in and smack down all the stuff. The quest WAS designed for 18 Level 20 and unders to get together and do it together. But for sure it's always a bonus and great help to get help :P

We got help. Compmike you rule!

TIP#3) Explain the plan very very carefully. I remember thinking to myself, am I chatting in the same /party as some of these people. Make sure everyone knows the plan. People aggro the wrong things, die from stupid deaths, and kill 17 people too by not following the plan. Decide whose gonna be the one that presses the ??? first. Who sleeps the jelly, when to do this, that etc. You guys know the drill :P

TIP#4) Have fun. If a lot of you get all upset about dying, delevel even, don't take it out on your party or leave the party and swearing never to do the quest again.

It took me 2 parties (one guided, one not) to get through this quest. It's a very hard quest to even start up and can range from 10 minutes to gathering everyone to 3 hours of pure organization. By then, everyones just aggrovated. I can't stress it enough to have fun. This quest expects you to die. It's a test to find new people to talk to, you can easily even make 17 new friends. It's a test of seeing what works and what doesn't. Think about it, why ELSE would your reward be an item that can give you experience points??! :P I lost over 1000+ e/p doing this quest. And I ended up with 636 exactly from my Dragon Chronicles. Go figure :P

I know this is a long post, but I guarantee you, you're own person stories will either match up to this, or be a hundred more lines.

Good luck!

Safe journeys and happy travels!

Wow this was fun....we started in bastok we had 18 ppl strong (some a little impatient) we go to mines and we get a sweeper to help us but it was a blm so it took awhile. we finally get there and our thf uses 2 hr then gets the puddings. I was staying back and healing (lvl 18rdm/7thf). we casted sleep on one (makes the fight much less stressful) we gang up on one and kill it quickly but it got its AoE spell of and no one died yet....

so we are all healing while the others ones asleep. Then all hell breaks loose..a war attacked it then we started fighting it did its AoE. OUCH!!!....we finally kill it one died but our sweeper raises him

As we are going to get the ore 2 bogys aggro to us. People wouldnt stay and help fight they just ran our sweeper ends up dying then the others come back aggroed to 2 ghouls so now we are 18 weak against 2 ghouls and 2 bogys. Eventually we all die but I still got my 5k and my exp was 613! It was the funniest quest I have done.

Well I was chilling in Bastok when I was invited to a PT for the eco-warrior and it was horrible. The main alliance leader kept asking why he had to be leader. Everyone kept talking about stupid crap and asking the same questions over and over again.

The group decided to meet at the mines instead of everyone meeting at Steaming Sheep to verify we all had quest... so that knocked three players out when we got to gusgen cause they couldn't get the oil. Then we managed to get some to tele from bastok along with two other slackers we'd been waiting on for half an hour.

As soon as we walked into the mines my party leader and another guy ran off to go fight the NM. Then after about 20 minutes they came back and shouted for everyone to get oiled up. There were still people in N Gustaberg running so they obviously weren't thinking. Those of us that were there didn't want to get left behind though... so we started our travel with no escort and about 15 players. After some guy started running the wrong way everyone followed him. I just stood ran the way we were supposed since no one listened to me when I told them they went the wrong way. I ran around all the bandersnatchs and ghouls. Got to the big bridge thing and just chilled. 20 minutes later the party catches up with me and 2 others that hadn't made it to the mines got there too. 1 of them didn't get the oil.

He ended up leaving because he was pissed.

So there we all are... a group of 16 people, 3 whm, no thfs and a TON of wars. 1 more member was in konstadt still on his way. We get cursed by a bogy and people start whining about wanting to wait til curse wears off. Some other guy says ***** it and lets just finish it. So we huddle up and BAM!

Two MASSIVE puddings jump out. about 4 team up on one, 9 on the other. We killed the one before it could hit us with its AoE spell and then turned on the second one. Things were looking good... then...
AoE

3 people drop. I've got 9 HP left and I'm actually in better shape than a couple others. No one had more than 100 HP left due to the 260-295 damage spell that pudding nailed us with. But we killed it.

Then I click the ??? run back in the tunnel and heal. Everyone is standing around playing with themselves. I gave up on the idiots. Guess what spawned... yea... a bogy and a ghoul. Guess what... 3 more people died. Finally the guy from konstadt shows up and clicks the ??? and then leaves. WTF!

A whm ressed everyone and we all healed up and made the trek back. When we got to the entrance everyone just disbanded and left those 6 who died to get greased up and make their way back themselves. I tried to help them, but they all ran off in different directions in the mines... forget it...

Worst organization I have ever seen. And to think there were people talking about wanting to do this more than once.

What would be the in-game "netiquette" for getting such a group together? I find that people are only interested in leveling and the Konchtat Highlands are much less populated than the Valkrum Dunes... and everytime I go to Gusgen, there's like 15 people, all anonymous, and not looking to pt. Do I hang out in Bastok and /shout until I annoy everyone? I JUST WANNA BE LOVED! Thanks.

I just did this quest with 18 people.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ESCOURT.

We got agroed by a Bogy, it took out 13 people (5 of them de-leveled) and then we got agroed by a ghoul which killed us.

The bogy itself wasn't what was hard, it was the fact he kept getting a full-cure for no apparent reason.

Make sure you have an escourt because Bogys here are just a big pain like in the Dunes (at least when they constantly heal themselves)

I attempted to do this quest today. I was able to get an alliance started. The only thing that sucked was that we did have that many WHM's. We were able to get two escorts. A 60 PLD and a high leveled DRG. We were making are way through the mines when two members got lost. The DRG had to go back and get them. The PLD took the rest of us to the ???. We were all getting ready and waiting for the ones who got lost. When some touched the ???. We were all caught offguard. One of them instantly killed a few. We all strted to fight it. We were able to kill one, but not with half the alliance getting killed. We started to work on the second one, but we had no chance. All but one were killed. He ran off while it chased him. The PLD and DRG went off to save him, but it was too late. At the end we were all dead and really pissed. If it wasn't for the one who touched it we could have made it. We all decided to back to Home Point and try again. We all ended up splitting. We were all disappointed and never got to finish the quest.

i saw my little brother do this quest last night with a full alliance!!!!

lol

.....of inexperienced players. everyone died except like 4 people... they tried to fight both puddings at once or something. almost noone did their two hour....it was funny. both NM's AoEs went off and massacred almost everyone. they barely won even with a 68whm escorting and healing. he had to raise like 16 people by himself and they all had to go back and get oiled up and touch the ??? again to get their quest item. i had a fractured rib from laughing at them so hard....i won't say what server they were on. spare them the shame....it was hilarious. noone was tanking..it was a random brawl. and they got their azzes handed to them.

I did it with my friends and also some other strangers to fill the ranks, i was a THF/MNK for this, there was 20 altogether, 18 allience and 2 others level 40+. We had 10 mages, 4 WHMs, 6 BLMS, the rest melee. The BLMs slept one and then Nuked the hell out of the other while the warriors kept the hate, only thing i did was sneak >_<, when one was dead we killed the other. We were pretty lucky, there were no other monsters there when we got there and none spawned during the fighting.

Take a paladin and a ranger with you. Have ever single melee fight everthing you encounter along the way. You need the TP. If the bogys and ghouls arent in the room when you get there, wait for them to spawn or ask a high-level or two to stand by for a few minutes. Let the mages decide on which one to sleep beforehand, then have ever single one of them cast the spell on him (he will resist the first few times). Have your paladin touch the ???, then hit invincible. The second slime won't stay asleep for very long, and he will be angry at the mages when he wakes up, so you must dispatch the first when as quickly as possible. The easy way is to have the ranger unload Eagle Eye Shot and a weapon skill. This should do 200+ damage to the first slime. Let the mages finish this one. On the second, use your skill chains. He shouldnt take but a few seconds longer to kill than the first. You shouldnt need any more two hours, or even a high-level to clear the way. BTW, I know rangers are rare and dont usually do things like eco-warrior owing to the fact that the reward is more like 2000 gil rather than 5000 gil for them (arrows, food, and transportation), but they are worth it if you can find one.

This quest is rather easy if u have experienced players and a designated leader. When I did this I pretty much set the tone and had 1 whm, 1 blm, 1 tank is every group. No1 else voked and we moved as a group. Only the ppl doing skill chains, and I were pretty much talking bcus its easy to get ur chat flooded and create lag. Against the main guy 2 sam's did their 2 hr, I mighty strikes for hate and tanked, we killed him in like 25 secs..owned.

Very good quest to repeat if u can actually get people organized.

what i learned
# Jun 04 2004 at 6:27 AM Rating: Decent
tried doing this last night, i died and so did everyone else...here's what i learned...

1-have a whm in every group
2-have a blm in every group
3-have someone be a main tank this was our biggest problem, no one wanted to die so no war's stood up to be a tank :-/
4-have a set leader that tells everyone what to do-the leader we had was very silent with everything we did
5-explain before you go in-have a battle plan and make sure everyone knows
6-spread the mages out!!!!the whole time i had a whm following me as i tried to heal-if agro has to go to a whm atleast it doesn't put another one into a risk factor

i don't know if this is true but the atk that hits everyone i think it can be avoided if ur away from it...i don't really remember but i'm doing this quest again tonight! i'll make sure i post on how i did.

I did this quest with 7 or 8 people. It was incredibly easy. Make a party full of of BLMs, 2 WHMs, and a tank. Have the tank provoke but DO NOT engage. Sleep the other slime. Have the BLMs blast away with spells. This will be the easiest 5K you'll ever make most likely.

We had two mid 50s clear the path for us, a SAM and a MNK.

Just finished this quest, well sort of, I'm currently eating dirt right now waitinbg for a raise so I can get the ore. The best way to do this quest is to form your alliance but have one high level person (35+) go in and clear the way for everyone else. The puddings aren't hard themselves, it is the ghouls and bogies that spawn right on top of you that finish most parties. After the slimes are dead make sure you check the ??? again to get the ore, if you don't you will need to re-oil and go through and get it again. The only hard part of this quest is getting a balanced alliance, and then clearing that battle area of bogies and ghouls. As I typed before get a higher level person to wipe out the bogies and ghould and all of you will be 5000gil richer and 500-1000exp wiser.
strategy employed for this quest

Just completed this quest yesterday. We had discussed doing this quest in my LS, and one of our members invited others in her old LS, so we had a full alliance going into this. Also, we had ANOTHER party set up of people who will be doing escort. Here is the strategy we employed once everyone gathered in Bastok:

1) The parties in the alliance were broken up as follows: Party #1 had the tanks and 2 WHMs (I was a WHM in this party), Party #2 had the BLMs and 1 WHM, and Party #3 had everyone else (along with 1 WHM). Our escort party was made of high levels (lvl 40-50) from our LS and other volunteers (there was one WHM in that group).

2) After getting the level cap, the escort party broke up to 3 people in front and 2 in the back (the 2 in the back were to handle any pops that occurred after the leading three did their sweep). We all made it to the ??? room, and the tanks gathered around the ???, followed by the miscellaneous melees, and the mages towards the entrance to the clearing. The escort party stayed to handle the bogies and ghouls in the room as well as any that may pop during and after the battle.

3) When the signal was given, the main tank (for us it was a PLD) touched the ???. The BLM's then took turns casting Sleep on one of the puddings, and while that pudding was asleep, they used Fire on the Pudding being engaged (Puddings, being slime-type creatures, are weak to fire). The tanks did what they normally do, and the other melees jumped in when hate was established. After defeating one pudding, we shifted to the other Pudding and wiped it out as well.

We finished this quest with only one death (one of the mages got too close when the pudding executed its AoE). The key to completing this quest with very few if any deaths is organization. Going into this haphazardly will lead to mass slaughter of your alliance. It's easy to get a feeling of invincibility when you're traveling with 17 other people in an alliance. I highly recommend having a high lvl group escort your alliance through the area...it'll save you using up alliance resources prior to the NM fight. I'm looking forward to doing the other eco-quests. 5k gil and 822 xp (use the Dragon Chronicle page when you receive it at the end of the quest) for a reward is not bad at all :).

Addition: The title gained from doing this quest is Cerulean Soldier. Also, on your way out after killing the Puddings, make sure you speak with Degga TWICE. The first is to confirm that you did get the key item, and then he will tell you to go report back to Reifa in Port Bastok. The second time you speak with him he will take off the level restriction.

You say you have the quest activiated in "all 3 places" (windy, sandy, bastok). However, I have it activated in bastok, and it won't let me get it in sandy. Makes me very mad, but I guess I'm stuck with bastok. How in the world did you activate all three?

I don't believe you can get all three at the same time. If you activate one, the other two guys that activate the other two will say something like, "DO you have a minute? oh you're busy, nevermind then". I know that these are the correct people and they say this when you already have one activated in another city. Just FYI

The Three Rules
# Mar 16 2004 at 4:23 PM Rating: Excellent
29 posts
Okay, so here are the THREE RULES for doing the Bastok Eco-Warrior quest. There are some rules that go without saying like make SURE that EVERYONE has (and can) accepted the quest before even leaving town, have everyone get "slimed" at the same time so it's not wearing off the early arrivers right before you start the fight, have a high-level friend or two come along to be a "plow" and clear the surrounding areas of mobs before you bring your alliance through. But above and beyond all else, the THREE RULES must be obeyed or EVERYONE DIES :)

Rule #1: EVERYONE STAY TOGETHER

Gusgen is roughly shaped like a square, and where you need to get to is almost directly opposite the Gusgen entrance on the "square," so you can either go right or left to get there. Decide BEFORE YOU EVEN GO IN THE MINES who EVERYONE is going to follow, and then FOLLOW THEM. No wandering ahead, no falling behind, NO EXPLORING. If you want to get yourself killed wandering aimlessly through the tunnels, do it on your own time. Stay together or EVERYONE WILL DIE.

Rule #2: Mages - STAY THE HECK BACK

This means you, Casty McGee! Once you're at the room where you need to fight, have the melees gather near the ??? and the mages and casters stay back around the exit from the room, just within casting range. The slimes have a NASTY AOE attack that WILL take down a level 20 Tarutaru mage in one hit, and the other casters that manage to survive will be so busy healing themselves that the melees will die in the meantime, and then the mages will quickly follow. And make sure the BLMs don't get so spammy with their nukes that they draw aggro. Have the casters STAY BACK or EVERYONE WILL DIE.

And finally, the most important rule...

RULE #3: DO NOT TOUCH THE ???

Do not activate the ??? Do not highlight the ??? Do not even look directly at the ??? All it takes is one misplaced click to spell CERTAIN DOOM. So you're all gathering, plotting strategy, waiting for one of your WHMs to get Raised by someone who had to go all the way back to the entrance to get de-slimed because someone didn't obey the previous Three Rules and got ganked by a train of Banshees, and you think to yourself "hey, what's this? What if I just target it for a second..." and then BAM, all of the sudden half the alliance is dead before the other half even realize that the fight started. Have everyone gather, get into position, work out who is going to stand where and which slime is going to be attacked first and which one the mages are going to try to Sleep and have EVERYONE confirm at LEAST twice that they're absolutely SURE that they're ready, and then and ONLY then should you have ONE PRE-DESIGNATED PERSON trigger the ??? - prefferably a Theif with Perfect Dodge on. If someone accidentally even breathes hard NEAR the ??? before it's time, EVERYONE WILL DIE.

The real killer with the slimes are their AOE attack. If you're lucky, they won't even get a chance to do it once. If you're not lucky, each one will do it twice within the first minute of battle and then I don't know if anything will save you. The first time I tried the Bastok Eco-Warrior nobody obeyed the three rules and we were all slaughtered not once but three times consecutively before giving up. The second time I was in a group that followed the Three Rules and it was a total cakewalk. Good luck :)

I did this quest with 18 people. 10 were dead in the end, but we got the Puddings.

I was a RDM, so I started by throwing a couple de-buffs, a nuke, then went full healing cause everyone was so low. By this time 1/3 of the people were dead and the first party finished its Pudding (lol).

We all turned on the second and, as I sent a Cure II to one of our tanks, I saw 4 more people take a dirt nap. We finished the second pudding, but almost everyone was in the red.

I went back and looked at my log and noticed that the Puddings have an AE spell that did 120-140 across the board. Luckily, the first one died too quickly to use it twice.

My advice: load up on BLM and everyone hit it as hard as possible in the beggining to avoid those AE spells.
