Description

Mashuu-Ajuu (k-6) wants you help with his horticultural homework assignment. He asks that you use "Herb Seeds" to grow something that will impress his classmates, such as a "Sobbing Fungus." and gives you a bag of herb seeds.

You go buy a flower pot, and plant the seeds, in about 3 days real time you have a plant.

I couldn't grow sobbing fungus, I grew ice crystals with the bag that he gave me, so I went to the AH and bought some Sobbing Fungus for 500gil.

Well when I returned to him and gave him the sobbing fungus he replied with. "Humph! You only brought me what I asked for... I guess it would have been expecting too much for anything more than that, huh? Stick to adventuring next time..." and gave me 500 gil and a "Stationery Set." which is a furnishing for my apartment. (identified as "A Bastokan stationery set."

If you grow him a Deathball he will give you 700 gil.

Stationary Set is Exclusive . You cannot buy this at the Auction House. It cannot be traded to you. This quest has no level minimum. It may have a level maximum, or cap, of fame 2-4. If you do not complete this quest before Windhurst fame 2-4, you may -never- be able to obtain the Stationary set. Your results may vary.
Data: (more testing required) Bastok resident with Windhurst fame 4, level 25, unable to get quest. Windhurst resident, no fame, level 1, got the quest.
Examples of other quests with level caps are:
Bastok Markets: The Signpost Marks the Spot, Father Figure.
You can of course buy Scop's Operetta at the AH.

If you have done Teachers Pet, or started Let sleeping dogs lie quest, You probably wont be able to get this quest.

I believe Let Sleeping Dogs Lie event is triggered by Teacher's Pet. If you've done Teachers Pet quest, you cannot get the quest with Mashuu-Ajuu for stationary. If you haven't done Teachers Pet quest, you can. If you HAVE done Teachers Pet, follow through with Let Sleeping Dogs Lie quest, zone, and if you have rank 4+ Fame in Windy, you will recieve the quest from Mashuu.

Might wanna edit the infortmation concerning all three Quests, Alla.

quick note on gardening, its gotta b a randomizer. I've had 6 mules growing for about 8 months now every kinda pot and plant every combination. From cactus to seeds to arcane pots. Planted and crystalized just the same. 9 times out of 10 different results. You can minimize the bads but never eliminate them. Nor can you predict results.

IMHO

After I fed the seeds a fire crystal, and all I grew were hot peppers, I bought a deathball at the auction house and he didn't seem to notice. I didn't get a full return on the 1000 gil I spent, but I did get a tedious quest done.

I bought a deathball from the AH and gave it too the kid and he seemed pleased by getting one despite the fact that I had not actually grown it. In fact he didn't seem to notice. Good thing I removed the exp date lol.

True, I didn't get the full return for the $1000 gil I paid, but it did finish a tedious quest and I had tried to grow one with the seeds he gave me and a fire crystal, but all I got were hot peppers.

For all of you having a hard time gardening, you really should get the spring edition of the statagy guides in your book stores. It gives a full list of everything you can grow and how to grow it. For those trying to make Sobbing fungi out of Herb seeds with a dark crystal... it's not going to happen. The crystal you feed it is more important than anything else.

Herb seeds + dark = Light crystals, Black Rock, Deathball, OR Amaryllis only

If you want to make sobbing fungi you have to use a lighting crystal ..I've done it three times and it works. These are the possible things you can get from it.

Herb seeds + lightning = Water crystals, Sobbing Fungi, OR Mhaura Garlic only

Maybe the day of the week, or the type of pot how everyone is talking about factor into which one of the three or four come out but it's the crystal used that decide which group of items might come out. Hope that help, and for the full three page list, go get that Strat guide ; )

I once repeated this quest many times. That was a couple months ago at least. I bought a bunch of fungi today, and a deathball, but he no longer seems interested in anything. Do you eventually lose this quest when your fame gets higher, like the ring quest in Bastok?

I was determined to garden this baby and decided that death is dark so lets go completely dark. I planted herb seeds on darksday, fed a dark crystal on darksday and then harvested on darksday. I used 5 brasspots. I ended up with 2 black rocks 10 amarylises (sp?) and tada Smiley: yippee 1 deathball. Hope this helps. It's still luck with 1/5 success but it's something.

you dont get 700 additional gil, but 700gil total instead of 500$

Does anyone know if u get alot more fame for bringing the deathball instead of the sobbing fungus??
Deathballs are 1k at AH on Ifrit and sobbing is 500
so if i get the same fame for both items i rather raise my fame a bit with sobbing fungus cause it makes me brake even ;)

I've done this quest for a couple of characters and have not noticed a difference in the amount of fame this gives between the deathball and sobbing fungus, so if there is a difference it's very very slight.

try to do more quests in windurst. Repeatable quest would help u alot. it will help u to get this quest and others too!!
heres what I did
# Feb 25 2004 at 9:57 AM Rating: Excellent
I did herb seeds, feed a dark crystal and got a deathball, He gave me 700 gil and the stationary set, I did hear someone had bought the stuff and brough it too him, he wasnt too thrilled, I have another one growing to see what else I can get. didn't really care about the gil, but if you want to cost it, earthen pot costs about 900, seed he will give you, you can pick up the dark crystal from the mad fox that spawns in E. Saru next to the canyon, he always drops a dark crystal. Okay, now if you have a hard time getting 900gil for the pot together, the teacher's pet is repeatable, and required before you can do this quest, and it gives you 250 gil a pop, just have to do it 4 time, or that quest with a couple of others. The stationary set I also think looks kinda neat. if you just do this quest twice it will pay for the flower pot and you can do other things with it afterwards. Dark crystal slows down the growth of herb seeds so it does take 3 days to do.

I see that some of you say "sobbing fungus" is a rare grow... but seems that it's pretty easy to me... this is how it went: i've tried to grow some with the herbal seeds that i loot off saplings, and because of trying to train my char in Valkrum Dunes, i've come to neglect the plants time and time again... seems that i always missed the crystal feeding time... but funny thing is, i'm always just in time for harversting(?!) and i got 4 sobbing fungus off those two bags of herbal seeds... might be a coincidence?

The Time of Day, the Day, the moon, what you plant, what you grow it with, and when you harvest all have an impact on growing things.
nice quest :)
# Feb 04 2004 at 7:49 AM Rating: Default
this quest is repeatable as long as you zone everytime, which isnt hard because the zone point for another part of the city is right there by the mog house entrance and for rambling windy its a short distance away.
i bought a stack of sobbing fungus for 3k and he pays 6k for 12..nice 3k profit and fame as well.
i was able to buy 1 deathball in san,d for 200gil, again 500 gil profit,...deathballs seem hard to come by.
if you dont mind spending the time, this is a very nice repeatable which actually pays off

You need to do the "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" quest at this point. After completing that quest, you can go back to this one for repeats forever.
