oooooh! I need to VENT!
I did this quest finally.. Started out with one pot, ended up with 5. Went through 2 growing cycles with a few. After 2 weeks I finally got my Sobbing Fungus today!
BUT (this burns me up) I hand it in to Mashuu and he feeds me this line:
Hmph! you only brought me what i asked for ..etc..etc....(see top of page) HOW INSULTING!
I feel ripped off! I worked hard to grow this and I think I have just been accused of cheating -(when Mashuu himself is the one who is cheating, I would like to add!) He thinks I strolled over to the AH for it I guess!
hehe ok.. maybe this is just the normal response but jeesh it was pretty insulting! I worked hard to make that for him and was sooooo excited when I finally grew it! :p

He asks that you use "Herb Seeds" to grow something that will impress his classmates, such as a "Sobbing Fungus." and gives you a bag of herb seeds. You go buy a flower pot, and plant the seeds, in about 3 days real time you have a plant. I couldn't grow sobbing fungus, I grew ice crystals with the bag that he gave me, so I went to the AH and bought some Sobbing Fungus for 500gil. Well when I returned to him and gave him the sobbing fungus he replied with. "Humph! You only brought me what I asked for... I guess it would have been expecting too much for anything more than that, huh? Stick to adventuring next time..." and gave me 500 gil and a "Stationery Set." which is a furnishing for my apartment. (identified as "A Bastokan stationery set." If you grow him a Deathball he will give you 700 gil. I grew a crystal with the seeds he gave me, but when I planted some herb seeds I got off a sapling, I actually wound up growing a "Deathball," so I figured I'd take it to the little fella and see what he said. I got a very favorable response:
"Wow! Well done! What kind of crystal did you feed it to grow something like this? I might even be able to beat Kirarara with this. You deserve every gil of your reward!"
Then he gave me 700 gil and the stationary set. So I guess the response the other folks got was implying that he wanted you to bring something impressive, and gave Sobbing Fungus as an example. Maybe anything that you take him from an herb seed planting works? (with perhaps even more gil for other items?)
Any thoughts?

After completing this quest, you can place the Stationary Set that you get as a reward in your mog house (it is furniture).
After the Stationary Set has been in your mog house for approximately one week (earth time), your moogle will tell you that he wrote a song for you using the Stationary Set, and you will receive a scroll of Scop's Operetta (Bard song).

Deathball and Sobbing Fungus fall under Food > Ingredients. Took me a while to find them.
I got totally lucky for this quest.
Someone on my server listed 2 deathballs for 500gil each at the AH. Usually they go for double that, minimum. I bought one for my main and one for my mule.
So, I got from my 2 deathballs=400 gil AND 2 neat looking pieces of mog house furniture. Not shabby...I actually got 2 items and a measly profit! My mithra is now one happy kitty.
Someone on my server listed 2 deathballs for 500gil each at the AH. Usually they go for double that, minimum. I bought one for my main and one for my mule.

What section do Deathshrooms fall under? I can't seem to find them.
Same, food > ingredients, i would suspect. ^^
But what the posts recommend is a DEATHBALL, also under food> ingredients.

I call my cave "My Cave". Then I get my nourishment by suckling the fresh milk from a newborn lahmas teets. I stroll into the forest looking for riches, but I usually just find pecans. I like pecans. I use the cracked pecan shells for weapons, I throw them under my enemies bare feet. Then I enjoy the meat of the pecan which gives me power.

I don't know...but I managed to grow two Light crystals...Doesn't make sense, considering I used a Dark crystal on the plant....oh well

My mog wrote me a song too, but it took a long time. I think he will not write you a song until you get enough fame.

My mog gave me 4 pieces of zinc ore when I had the simple bed in my house. It is fame and tally set off also. I sent the bed to my vender and he didn't get anything yet.

This quest is repeatable it seems - if you go back to him later, he says he's requesting your help again (though he doesn't give you any more herb seeds). I only gave him a sobbing fungus the first time so I don't know if giving him anything else would affect being able to repeat it.
I have not yet had time to grow another fungus (or anything else) so I'm not sure what his next reward will be.

I've been getting the message, "Beautiful flowers are blooming, kupo! Your plant is growing well, kupo!" for the past three real earth days. When do I harvest the blasted thing to take to the kid?

It took about a couple of days after the plant bloomed before the option to Harvest showed up.

yes i think the day you add the crystal has an effect to. Once i added fire crystal on fire day, and got double the yeild i usualy get. 22 Peppers.
But to get sobbing fungus i had a clay pot, herb seeds and added a lighting crystal.

Payed 700 on auction house for it (sobbing fungus cost 900, so I went with the deathball).
Tryed to hand in Scream fungus, he wouldnt take it.

Deathball was 900 gil at auction house. I was mislead by the quest description to think he would give an additional 700 gil for the deathball. Additional being over the 500 gil for the sobbing fungus. For a total of 1200 gil. No, I just recieved 700 gil, so I lost 200 gil. But I got a stationary set. Never checked sobbing fungus price.
Has anyone gotten anything but a stationary set, I was told there are other, depending on what you give him, but all I've seen in 3 attempts is a stationary set...

I've been experimenting with planting quite a bit. (have a garden of 7 pots right now) I am not ready to post all the results but I will say this, the type of pot also determines what you get. I have brass, ceramic, and earthen and get different results from each.
And to the person who asked how to use crystals...it's an option that comes up after a couple days.
To the person whose plants wilted...you much examine your plants often. The more you examine them, the healthier and faster they grow. If you go on a long trip, and cannot examine them, they will die. Hope that helps.

I bought one of the Deathshrooms from the auction house and gave it to the kid. He was thrilled saying he might just be able to beat the class pet with it.
His payment for me was 700gil and the stationary set. The shroom purchased was only about 500 so I got a 200gil profit.

When do you use the Crystal on the Plants? BEFORE you plant them? or is there an option when it's "ready"?
I tried growing the plant from the herb seeds, by the 2nd game day it was growing nicely. I was away for 1 Real Day (about 36 hours), and when I came back, the plant was wilted! :(
I never found an option to use a Crystal on it in the "Gardening" Tab via Moogle.
Help?

The option probably was available while you were gone, so by the time you got back it was too late.

I used a fire crystal and grew a whole bunch of Kazaam Peppers, but the kid wouldn't take them. Next batch with a water crystal grew fire crystals. Growing it now with a Dark Crystal. I'm hoping that there's something he's looking for that's better than a Sobbing Fungus...

Well, i've got 4 pots of herbs going to use lightning on all 4, see if they pop out the same thing. If they do, means it's probably the moon. If they don't, probably random chance.

I placed the stationary set this guy gives you in my mog house. A few days later, out of the blue, when I go to talk to my mog, he's all happy to see me. Seems he wrote me a song to remember him by, 'cause he missed me. Lvl 19 bard song. Thought it was cute ;)
